In this paper, a battery charging system for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Electric Vehicle (EV), and operation algorithm of charging system are introduced. Also, the proposed charging system uses commercial electricity in order to charge the battery of parked PHEV and 48V battery charging system with power factor controllable single phase converter for PHEV is investigated in this paper. This research verifies the power factor control of input and the converter output controlled by the charge control algorithm through simulation and experiment.
According to revolutionary developments in automobile technologies, eco-friendly advanced vehicles (hybrid vehicle, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, electric vehicle, etc.) are rapidly increasing. The electromagnetic compatibility is getting more important for development of a vehicle because those advanced vehicles are driven by electric energy and equipped with more electric systems. In general, electromagnetic compatibility tests consist of an electromagnetic interference(EMI) test and an electromagnetic susceptibility(EMS) test. EMI test of the electric vehicles are needed not only in driving mode but also in charging mode because they must be recharged by much electric energy for driving. Depending on vehicle manufacturers, the charging device type and the location of charging device inlet in electric vehicles are various. In this paper, in order to investigate EMI of electric vehicles in charging mode in consideration of the direction of measuring antenna and the location of charging device inlet, a series of electromagnetic emission tests are conducted using three electric vehicles (neighborhood electric vehicle, electric vehicle and electric vehicle-bus). The test results show that electromagnetic emission measurements in charging mode are dependent on the direction of measuring antenna and the location of charging device inlet.
In this paper, a new hybrid DC-DC converter is proposed for electric vehicle 3.3 kW on-board battery charger applications, which can be modulated in a phase-shift manner under a fixed frequency or frequency variation. By integrating a half-bridge (HB) LLC series resonant converter (SRC) into the conventional phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) converter with a full-bridge rectifier, the proposed converter has many advantages such as a full soft-switching range without duty-cycle loss, zero-current-switching operation of the rectifier diodes, minimized circulating current, reduced filter inductor size, and better utilization of transformers than other hybrid dc-dc converters. The feasibility of the proposed converter has been verified by experimental results under an output voltage range of 250-420V dc at 3.3 kW.
In this paper, operation algorithms are evaluated for a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle (FCHEV). Power assist, load leveling and equivalent fuel algorithm are proposed and implemented in the FCHEV performance simulator. It is found from the simulation results that the load leveling algorithm shows poor fuel economy due to the system charge and discharge efficiency. In the power assist and equivalent fuel algorithm, the fuel cell stack is operated in a relatively better efficiency region owing to the battery power assist, which provides the improved fuel economy.
In this paper, three types of power control strategies for controlling a Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicle(FCHEV) are studied in view of fuel economy. The FCHEV has become one of alternatives for future vehicles since it does emit water only without any exhaust gas while it has a high well-to-wheel efficiency together with an energy saving due to regenerative braking. However, it has also several disadvantages such as the complexity of vehicle system, the increased weight and the extra battery cost. Among various power control strategies, a static power control strategy, a power assist control strategy and a fuzzy logic-based power control strategy are simulated and compared to show the effectiveness of each method.
In this study, the performances of five input split type hybrid electric vehicle sub-drivetrains were analyzed. The five sub-drivetrains consist of chain, helical gears and planetary gears. For the analyzing above five sub-drivetrains, the mathematical equations were derived. From the analysis, we found that the sub-drivetrain with chain shows slower acceleration performance and larger energy consumption on the city driving. And, the sub-drivetrain with only helical gear shows smallest energy consumption on the city driving. If the sub-drivetrain can change its gear speed, it shows fastest acceleration performance, but it has largest energy consumption on the city driving due to its additional auxiliary components.
This paper presents the design of an active roll control system for a ground vehicle and an experimental study using an devised electric-actuating roll control system. Based on a three degree of freedom linear vehicle model, the controller is designed using lateral acceleration and rollrate feedback. In order to investigate the feasibility of an active control system, experimental work is carried out using a hardware-in-the-loop (Hil) setup which has been constructed by the devised electric-actuating system and the full vehicle model including tire characteristics. The performance is evaluated by an experiment using the Hil setup with limited bandwidth. Finally, in order to enhance the control performance in the transient region, a hybrid control strategy is proposed and evaluated.
This paper presents a novel design of a fuzzy control strategy (FCS) based on torque distribution for parallel hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). An empirical load-regulating vehicle operation strategy is developed on the basis of analysis of the components efficiency map data and the overall energy conversion efficiency. The aim of the strategy is to optimize the fuel economy and balance the battery state-of-charge (SOC), while satisfying the vehicle performance and drivability requirements. In order to accomplish this strategy, a fuzzy inference engine with a rule-base extracted from the empirical strategy is designed, which works as the kernel of a fuzzy torque distribution controller to determine the optimal distribution of the driver torque request between the engine and the motor. Simulation results reveal that compared with the conventional strategy which uses precise threshold parameters the proposed FCS improves fuel economy as well as maintains better battery SOC within its operation range.
In this paper, a motor control algorithm for performing a mode change without an integrated starter generator (ISG) is suggested for the automatic transmission-based hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Dynamic models of the HEV powertrains such as engine, motor, and mode clutch are derived for the transient state during the mode change, and the HEV performance simulator is developed. Using the HEV performance bench tester, the characteristics of the mode clutch torque are measured and the motor torque required for the mode clutch synchronization is determined. Based on the dynamic models and the mode clutch torque, a motor torque control algorithm is presented for mode changes, and motor control without the ISG is investigated and compared with the existing ISG control.
In this paper, in order to improve safety of hybrid electric vehicle a fault detection algorithm is introduced. The proposed algorithm uses SVDD techniques. Two methods for learning a lot of data are used in this technique. One method is to learn the data incrementally. Another method is to remove the data that does not affect the next learning. Using lines connecting support vectors selection of removing data is made. Using this method, lot of computation time and storage can be saved while learning many data. A battery data of commercial hybrid electrical vehicle is used in this study. In the study fault boundary via SVDD is described and relevant algorithm for virtual fault data is verified. It takes some time to generate fault boundary, nevertheless once the boundary is given, fault diagnosis can be conducted in real time basis.
