  • A modeling method for cantilever beams undergoing axially oscillating motion is presented in this paper. Hybrid deformation variables are employed for the modeling method. Frequency response characteristics are investigated with the modeling method. It is shown that the geometric nonlinear effects of stretching and curvature play important roles to accurately predict the dynamic response. (omitted)

  • A strut-and-tie model was proposed to predict the shear strength of RS beam which is a hybrid steel beam with reinforced concrete ends. The proposed model is capable of considering the concrete softening effects due to diagonal shear cracks at the embedded area of steel in concrete. It can predict tile failure strength of RS beam from the mathematical formulations which are based on equilibrium, compatibility, and the constitutive laws of cracked reinforced concrete. The previous experimental results of 15 RS beams were analyzed with the proposed model and the analytical results were also compared with formulas currently available. The comparison revealed that the proposed model can predict the strength of RS beam better than the others. The average ratio of experimental strengths to analytical results was 1.02 and the standard deviation was 0.126.

  • In this study, new moment-resisting precast concrete beam-column joint made up of hybrid steel concrete was developed and tested. This beam-column joint is proposed for use in moderate seismic regions. It has square hollow tubular section in concrete column and connecting plate in precast U-beam. The steel elements in column and beam members were connected using bolt. Furthermore, in order to prevent the premature failure of concrete in hybrid steel-concrete connection, ECC(engineered cementitious composite) was used. An experimental study was carried out investigating the joint behavior subjected to reversed cyclic loading and constant axial compressive load. Two precast beam-column joint specimens and monolithic reinforced concrete joint specimen were tested. The variables for interior joints were cast-in-situ concrete area and transverse reinforcement within the joint. Tests were carried out under displacement controlled reverse cyclic load with a constant axial load. Joint performance is evaluated on the basis of connection strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, and displacement capacity. The test results showed that significant differences in structural behavior between the two types of connection because of different bonding characteristics between steel and concrete; steel and ECC. The proposed joint detail can induce to move the plastic hinge out of the ECC and steel plate. And proposed precast connection showed better performance than the monolithic connection by providing sufficient moment-resisting behavior suitable for applications in moderate seismic regions.

  • The three-dimensional nonlinear analysis on the partial tension experiment of Beam-Column connections in hybrid connections with RC columns and S beams is simulated. In this paper, mechanical characteristics between steel plates and concrete is investigated. Also the stress transfer mechanism prior to beam-column connection analysis was considered by using joint element.

  • The vibration analysis of rotating inward beams considering the pre-twisted is presented based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The frequency equations, are calculated using hybrid deformation variable modeling along with the Rayleigh-Ritz assumed mode methods. In this study, resulting system of ordinary differential equations shows the effects of angular speed, and Young's modulus ratio. It is believed that the results will be a reference with which other researchers and commercial FE analysis program, ANSYS can compare their result.

  • The principal obstacle to selection of a laser processing method in production is its relatively high equipment cost and the natural unwillingness of production supervision to try something new until it is thoroughly proven. The major objective of this work is focused on the combined features of gas tungsten arc and a low-power cold laser beam. In this work, the laser beam from a 7 watts carbon monoxide laser was combined with electrical discharges from a short-pulsed capacitive discharge GTA welding power supply. When the low power CO laser beam passes through a special composition shielding gas, the CO molecules in the gas absorbs the radiation, and ionizes through a process blown as non-equilibrium, vibration-vibration pumping. The resulting laser-induced plasma(LIP) was positioned between various configurations of electrodes. The high-voltage impulse applied to the electrodes forced rapid electrical breakdown between the electrodes. Electrical discharges between tungsten electrodes and aluminum sheet specimens followed the ionized path provided by LIP. The result was well-focused melted spots.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) beam column joints (BCJ) have mostly exhibited poor seismic performance during several past earthquakes, typically due to the poor-quality concrete or lack of reinforcement detailing typical of pre-code design practice. The present study is motivated towards numerical simulation and seismic fragility assessment of one such RC-BCJ. The BCJ is loaded to failure and strengthened using Ultra High Performance-Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-HFRC) jacketing. The strengthening is performed for four different BCJ specimens, each representing an intermediate damage state before collapse. viz., slight, moderate, severe, and collapse. From the numerical simulation of all the BCJ specimens, an attempt is made to correlate different modelling and design parameters of the BC joint with respect to the damage states. In addition, seismic fragility analysis of the original as well as the retrofitted damaged BCJ specimens show the relative enhancement achieved in each case.

  • This paper presents a careful theoretical investigation into interfacial stresses in RC beams strengthened with externally bonded imperfect FGM plate. In this study, an original model is presented to predict and to determine the stresses concentration at the imperfect FGM end, with the new theory analysis approach. Stress distributions, depending on an inhomogeneity constant, were calculated and presented in forms. It is shown that both the shear and normal stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam, and it is shown that the inhomogeneities play an important role in the distribution of interfacial stresses. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. The numerical resolution was finalized by taking into account the physical and geometric properties of materials that may play an important role in reducing the stress values. This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behaviour of the interface and design of the PFGM-RC hybrid structures.
