Growing market of electric vehicles such as hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and bare electric vehicles in the world is accelerating the significance of Li-ion batteries as a renewable green energy. According to such market flow, the developing components such as cathode, anode, electrolyte, and separator, composing the Li-ion batteries, is significantly important tasks for the commercialization. In particular, development of the cathode material having high capacity and stable thermal stability is essential for long-distance electric vehicle in the near future. Herein we introduce various applications of Li-ion batteries such as portable electronics, electric vehicles, and energy storage system, and also its research trend, in particular on the cathode materials.

In this paper a power controller is proposed to accurately control the commanded power for charge and discharge operation of a bidirectional DC-DC converter so that durability is improved in hybrid systems such as fuel cell vehicles. Also, a control algorithm for charge and discharge operation is proposed to improve fuel utilization and keep battery SOC constant so that energy is effectively utilized.

In this paper, an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for curvilinear motions in an interacting multiple model (IMM) algorithm to track a maneuvering vehicle on a road is investigated. Driving patterns of vehicles on a road are modeled as stochastic hybrid systems. In order to track the maneuvering vehicles, two kinematic models are derived: A constant velocity model for linear motions and a constant-speed turn model for curvilinear motions. For the constant-speed turn model, an UKF is used because of the drawbacks of the extended Kalman filter in nonlinear systems. The suggested algorithm reduces the root mean squares error for linear motions and rapidly detects possible turning motions.

Electric vehicles contribute greatly to energy conservation, $CO_2$ reduction and energy security through high fuel economy and various electric sources. Electric cars have a huge economic impact. More than 14 million hybrid electric cars have been sold worldwide. More than 3 million plug-in electric vehicles have been sold worldwide. The environmental impact depends greatly on the amount of national power generation, and as the electric grid becomes more and more carbon-intensive, countries are increasingly adopting hybrid and electric vehicles. Electricity is expanding beyond cars. Electric buses, trucks, and ships have similar benefits.

This study compares the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control methods of a thermoelectric generator on vehicles. The researchers conduct comparisons on five different MPPT methods, including a fractional open circuit voltage method, a perturbation and observation (P&O) method, an incremental conductance method, a linear extrapolation-based MPPT (LEMPPT) method, and a LEMPPT/P&O hybrid method. These five MPPT methods are theoretically analyzed in detail, and the comparisons are conducted through MATLAB/Simulink simulation results. The comparison outcomes reveal that linear MPPT methods, including LEMPPT and LEMPPT/P&O hybrid methods, are more suitable for a thermoelectric generator on vehicles than the other MPPT methods examined in this work.
This paper proposes a novel compound-type hybrid energy storage system (HESS) that inherits the unique advantages of both battery/supercapacitor (SC) and the SC/battery HESSs for electric vehicles (EVs). Eight operation modes are designed to match this system. A mode control strategy is developed for this HESS on the basis of these modes, and five classes of operation modes are established to simplify this strategy. The mode control strategy focuses on high operating efficiency and high power output. Furthermore, the compound-type HESS is designed such that the SC is the main priority in braking energy absorption. Thus, this HESS can operate efficiently and extend battery life. Simulation results also show that the compound-type HESS can not only supply adequate power to the motor inverter but can also determine suitable operation modes in corresponding conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that this HESS can extend battery life as well. The overall efficiency of the compound-type HESS is higher than those of the battery/SC and the SC/battery HESSs.
This paper presents a novel analysis, design, and implementation of a battery charging three-phase high frequency semi-controlled power converter feasible for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The main advantages of the proposed topology include high efficiency; due to lower power losses and reduced number of switching elements, high output power density realization, and reduced passive component ratings proportionally to the frequency. Additional advantages also include grid economic utilization by insuring unity power factor operation under different possible conditions and robustness since short-circuit through a leg is not possible. A high but acceptable total harmonic distortion of the generator currents is introduced in the proposed topology which can be viewed as a minor disadvantage when compared to traditional boost rectifiers. A hysteresis control algorithm is proposed to achieve lower current harmonic distortion for the rectifier operation. The rectifier topology concept, the principle of operation, and control scheme are presented. Additionally, a dc-dc converter is also employed in the rectifier-battery connection. Test results on 50-kHz power converter system are presented and discussed to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed topology for PHEV applications.
Power electronics is a key technology for electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. Typical power electronics converters used in electric drive vehicles include dc/dc converters, inverters, and battery chargers. New semiconductor materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) and novel topologies such as the Z-source inverter (ZSI) have a great deal of potential to improve the overall performance of these vehicles. In this paper, a Z-source inverter for fuel cell vehicle application is examined under three different scenarios. 1. a ZSI with Si IGBT modules, 2. a ZSI with hybrid modules, Si IGBTs/SiC Schottky diodes, and 3. a ZSI with SiC MOSFETs/SiC Schottky diodes. Then, a comparison of the three scenarios is conducted. Conduction loss, switching loss, reverse recovery loss, and efficiency are considered for comparison. A conclusion is drawn that the SiC devices can improve the inverter and inverter-motor efficiency, and reduce the system size and cost due to the low loss properties of SiC devices. A comparison between a ZSI and traditional PWM inverters with SiC devices is also presented in this paper. Based on this comparison, the Z-source inverter produces the highest efficiency.
The development of fuel cell hybrid power system, as a next generation power system to promote clean energy which will mitigate the continued global warming, has demonstratd a significant progress in passenger vehicle applications. Also, in case of railway vehicles in non-electrified railway lines, the adoption of fuel cell hybrid power system is being studied among well-known manufacturers. This paper introduces both the configuration and the control strategy of fuel cell hybrid power system to apply to a light electronic railway vehicle having a repeated driving pattern of acceleration, coasting and deceleration. The simulation results demonstrate the viability of the proposed power system design and its control strategy.

This paper is concerned about the hybrid tandem configuration as the design of the automated guided vehicle system(AGVs). The hybrid tandem configuration is that the manufacturing system is divided into several non-overlapping zones, workstations of each zone are linked by network configuration including loop. That is, the manufacturing system is divided into several non-overlapping small size networks, and at most two automated guided vehicles can be available in each network. The transit point is located at proper point between adjacent networks. The parts are transported to workstations in other network through the transit points. One of the objective functions in dividing into the hybrid tandem configuration is to minimize the maximum travel time of the divided networks, and other is to minimize the total travel distance of parts moved to workstations in other networks for the next processing. The model formulation is presented, and a numerical example is shown. Also, the performances of system for the hybrid tandem, tandem and network configuration are compared through the simulation. The results of this research will contribute to the development of material handling systems in the manufacturing system. Also, it will be applied in determining the transportation area of transportation vehicles and the number and size of the transportation fleet in the transportation problem of logistics management.
