  • New sol-gel precursors having the ability to protect iron against corrosion were synthesized and used to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid coatings based on epoxy. Bisphenol A epoxy was modified with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane to improve the compatibility, and water and HCl were used as catalysts for sol-gel process. Various coating formulations were prepared depending on the type of sol-gel precursors and the amount of each ingredient, and cast on iron substrates by dip-coating and thermally cured. Corrosion protection properties of coated iron were studied by a salt spray test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte. Hybrid coatings containing anticorrosive functional group exhibited excellent corrosion protection on iron, compared to that of typical hybrid coatings. From electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the hybrid coatings containing anticorrosive functional group could maintaine the initial impedance after 500 h, while the impedance of hybrid coatings without them started to decrease after 24 h.

  • The analysis in this paper is focused on the pattern of mixing of filaments over a cross-section of hybrid yarns according to different combinations of reinforcement and matrix filament yarns through microscopic view. The volume content of filament in hybrid yarn cross-section was maintained at 50% for both reinforcement and matrix, and the hybrid yarns count at 600 tex throughout the experiments. It was observed from the experiments that diameters of reinforcement and matrix filaments have strong effects particularly on the pattern of mixing of filaments over a cross-section of hybrid yarns such that the hybrid yarns with more or less equal diameters of reinforcement and matrix filaments showed considerably even distributions over the hybrid yarn cross-section. This paper also investigates the possibility of hybridizing carbon/aramid, carbon/glass and aramid/glass matrices through the commingling process. In the experiment, several process parameters were selected and they include pressure, yarn oversupply-rate and different nozzle types. As a result of these experiments, it was concluded that the hybridized materials show better performance than individual reinforced filament yarns in terms of mechanical properties. For small tensile forces, the carbon/glass/matrix combination turned out to be good enough for general purpose applications.

  • Transparent film heaters (TFHs) based on Joule heating are currently an active research area. However, TFHs based on an indium tin oxide (ITO) monolayer have a number of problems. For example, heating is concentrated in only part of the device. Also, heating efficiency is low because it has high sheet resistance ($R_s$). To address these problems, this study introduced hybrid layers of ITO/Ag/ITO deposited by magnetron sputtering, and the electrical, optical, and thermal properties were estimated for various thicknesses of the metal interlayer. The $R_s$ of ITO(40)/Ag/ITO(40 nm) hybrid TFHs were 5.33, 3.29 and $2.15{\Omega}/{\Box}$ for Ag thicknesses of 10, 15, and 20 nm, respectively, while the $R_s$ of an ITO monolayer (95 nm) was $59.58{\Omega}/{\Box}$. The maximum temperatures of these hybrid TFHs were 92, 131, and $145^{\circ}C$, respectively, under a voltage of 3 V. And that of the ITO monolayer was only $32^{\circ}C$. For the same total thickness of 95 nm, the heat generation rate (HGR) of the hybrid produced a temperature approximately $100^{\circ}C$ higher than the ITO monolayer. It was confirmed that the film with the lowest $R_s$ of the samples had the highest HGR for the same applied voltage. Overall, hybrid layers of ITO/Ag/ITO showed excellent performance for HGR, uniformity of heat distribution, and thermal response time.

  • To satisfy the demand of higher cutting performance, mechanical properties with tungsten carbide (WC-Co) tool materials were investigated. Hardness and transverse rupture strength with WC grain size, Co content and density were measured. Compared to H, K, and S manufacture maker as tungsten carbide (WC-Co) tool materials were used for high-speed machining of end-milling operation. The three tungsten carbide (WC-Co) tool materials were evaluated by cutting of STD 11 cold-worked die steel (HRC25) under high-speed cutting condition. Also, tool life was obtained from measuring flank wear by CCD wear measuring system. Tool dynamometer was used to measure cutting force. The cutting force and tool wear are discussed along with tool material characteristics. Consequently, the end-mill of K, H manufacture maker showed higher wear-resistance due to its higher hardness, while the S maker endmill tool showed better performance for high metal removal.

  • In order to enhance the thermal stability of binder materials of bonded type solid lubricants, several metal-alkoxide based sol-gel materials such as methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMOS), titaniumisopropoxide (Ti(Opr$\^$i/)$_4$), zirconiumisopropoxide (Zr(Opr$\^$i/)$_4$) and aluminumbutoxide (Al(Obu$\^$t/)$_4$) were modified chemically by both epoxy and acrylic silane compounds. Friction and wear characteristics of the bonded solid lubricants, whose binders were of several hybrid ceramic materials, were tested with a reciprocating tribo-tester. Wear life was evaluated with respect to the heat-curing temperature, friction temperature, type of supplement lubricants, and ratio of binder materials. Test results showed that the Si-Zr hybrid ceramic materials modified by epoxy-silane compounds had a higher wear life compared to others. Sb$_2$O$_3$ was the most effective supplement lubricants in the high temperature, and BUS analyses revealed that it was caused mainly by a strong anti-oxidation effect to MoS$_2$ particles. The higher heat-curing temperature resulted in the higher wear life, and the higher friction temperature resulted in the lower wear life.

  • Mechanical properties of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites fabricated by the reaction squeeze casting were compared with those of (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composites. Intermetallic compound formed by reaction between molten aluminum and reinforcing powder was uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. These intermetallic compounds were identified as $Al_3$NI using EDS and X-ray diffraction analysis. Microhardness and flexural strength of hybrid composites were higher than that of (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al Composite. In-Situ fracture tests were Conducted on (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al Composites and (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites to identify the microfracture process. It was identified from the in-situ fracture test of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al composites, microcracks were initiated mainly at the short fiber / matrix interfaces. As the loading was continued, the crack propagated mainly along the separated interfacial regions and the well developed shear bands. It was identified from the in-situ fracture test of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites, microcracks were initiated mainly by the short fiber/matrix interfacial debonding. • A solvent free, highly concentrated silica-acryl monomer hybrid sol was synthesized using aqueous colloidal silica as a precursor. The effects of the silica particle size, type of surface treatment agent employed, and silica content on the formation of the hybrid sol were systematically studied. The optical and physical properties of the coating solution prepared using the hybrid sol were also characterized. The viscosity of the hybrid sol tended to decrease as the particle size of the silica and the molecular weight of the surface treatment agent increased. The PET substrate coated with MPTMS-Mix (mixture, 70 wt%) solution showed the highest surface hardness (6 H) and low surface roughness ($Ra=0.044{\mu}m$), which could be attributed to an increase in packing density caused by the infiltration of small particles into the pores formed between larger particles.

  • Chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) -bamboo charcoal/silica (CS-PVA-BC/SI) hybrid fillers with compatibilized styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were fabricated by the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) method. The structure and composition of the composite samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The viscoelastic behaviors of the rubber composites and their vulcanizates were explored using a rubber processing analyzer (RPA) in the rheometer, strain sweep and temperature sweep modes. The storage and loss moduli of SBR increased significantly with the incorporation of different hybrid fillers, which was attributed to the formation of an interphase between the hybrid fillers and rubber matrix, and the effective dispersion of the hybrid fillers. The mechanical properties (hardness, tensile strength, oxygen transmission rate, and swelling rate) of the composite samples were characterized in detail. From the results of the mechanical test, it was found that BC-CS-PVA0SBR had the best mechanical properties. Therefore, the BC-CS-PVA hybrid filler provided the best reinforcement effects for the SBR latex in this research.
