Changes of Seed Viability and Physico-Chemical Properties of Milled Rice with Different Ecotypes and Storage Duration (벼 생태형별 저장기간에 따른 종자 발아율 및 이화학적 특성변화)

  • This study was carried out to examine the effects of storage duration on physico-chemical properties of milled rice. Rough rice of three rice ecotypes(Japonica, Tongil and F1 hybrids with Tongil back-ground) was stored for 4, 16, 28 and 40 months without artificial environmental control in seed warehouse. And this materials were investigated for seed germination rate, brown rice hardness, alkali digestion value(ADV), contents of protein, amylose, total sugar, and reducing sugar. Seed germination rate was significantly reduced with storage duration increased regardless of rice ecotypes : 66.7% from 16 months storage, 2.5% from 28, and nil from 40 months storage in Japonica rices. And 54.0%, 67.9% in Tongil, and F1 hybrid after 40 months storage, respectively. Brown rice hardness was not significantly affected by storage duration but showed significant genotypic differences. As the storage duration prolonged, sugar content and alkali digestion value increased, protein content declined while amylose content did not show clear tendency. Total and reducing sugar contents showed sharp increase upto 16 months storage and thereafter steady in crease, and the percentage of reducing sugar content out of total sugar content increased with extended storage duration.

In vivo quantification of mandibular bone remodeling and vascular changes in a Wistar rat model: A novel HR-MRI and micro-CT fusion technique

  • Purpose: This study was performed to introduce an in vivo hybrid multimodality technique involving the coregistration of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) to concomitantly visualize and quantify mineralization and vascularization at follow-up in a rat model. Materials and Methods: Three adult female rats were randomly assigned as test subjects, with 1 rat serving as a control subject. For 20 weeks, the test rats received a weekly intravenous injection of 30 ㎍/kg zoledronic acid, and the control rat was administered a similar dose of normal saline. Bilateral extraction of the lower first and second molars was performed after 10 weeks. All rats were scanned once every 4 weeks with both micro-CT and HR-MRI. Micro-CT and HR-MRI images were registered and fused in the same 3-dimensional region to quantify blood flow velocity and trabecular bone thickness at T0 (baseline), T4 (4 weeks), T8 (8 weeks), T12 (12 weeks), T16 (16 weeks), and T20 (20 weeks). Histological assessment was the gold standard with which the findings were compared. Results: The histomorphometric images at T20 aligned with the HR-MRI findings, with both test and control rats demonstrating reduced trabecular bone vasculature and blood vessel density. The micro-CT findings were also consistent with the histomorphometric changes, which revealed that the test rats had thicker trabecular bone and smaller marrow spaces than the control rat. Conclusion: The combination of micro-CT and HR-MRI may be considered a powerful non-invasive novel technique for the longitudinal quantification of localized mineralization and vascularization.

Surface roughness and color stability of various composite resins (수종의 복합 레진의 표면 거칠기와 색 안정성)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference in the surface roughness after polishing and to evaluate the difference in color stability after immersion in a dye solution among four types of composite resin materials. Four light-polymerized composite resins(Shade A2) with different sized filler content(a nanofilled, a hybrid, a microfilled, a flowble) were used. Average surface roughness (Ra) was measured with a surface roughness tester (Surftest Formtracer) before and after polishing with aluminum oxide abrasive discs(Super-Snap). Color of specimens before and after staining with 2% methylene blue solution were measured using spectrophotometer(CM-3700d) with SCI geometries. The results of Ra and ${\Delta}E$ were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA), a Scheffe multiple comparison test and Student t-test(p=0.05). After polishing, Ra values were decreased regardless of type of composite resins. In surface roughness after polishing and color stability after staining, nanofilled composite resin was not different with other composite resins except flowable resins.

Synthesis of Low Concentration of NaOH Solution using $Na^+$ ion in the Concentrated Water from Membrane Separation Process (분리막 농축수에 포함된 Na를 이용한 저농도 NaOH 용액의 합성)

  • Concentrated water discharged from seawater desalination process contains a high concentration of $Na^+$ ion. Electrolysis was applied to synthesize NaOH solution from the highly concentrated NaCl solution. The effect of various operating parameters of composited laboratory-scale chlor-alkali (CA) membrane cell was investigated. The operating parameters such as membrane types (CIMS and Nafion membranes), pretreatment of the membrane, flow rate (73 mL/min~200 mL/min), initial $Na^+$ ion concentration (1.5 M, 3M and 5 M) and current (1.5A and 2A) were evaluated. It was observed that synthesis efficiency of NaOH solution with CIMS membrane was higher than that with Nafion membrane, but the durability of CIMS membrane on $Cl_2$ gas was poor. The synthesis efficiency of NaOH solution increased with increasing initial $Na^+$ ion concentration and current, while the efficiency decreased with increasing flow rate using Nafion membrane.

  • In this study, we studied the characteristics of ion exchange for treatment of HSS (heat stable salts) which cause performance reduction in CO2 gas capture amine solution using anion exchange resins. The optimum HSS removal efficiency, 96.1% was obtained when using strong base anion exchange resin SAR10 at dosage 0.05 g/mL, 316 K, pH 12 and the best resin regeneration efficiency, 78.8% was obtained using NaOH solution of 3 M at 316 K. The adsorption data were described well by the Freundlich model and the sorption intensity(n) was 2.0951 lying within the range of favorable adsorption. The adsorption selectivity coefficients were increased by increasing valences and size of ion and desorption selectivity coefficients showed a contradictory tendency to adsorption selectivity coefficients. By continuous HSS removal experiments, 13.3 BV of HSS contaminated solution was effectively treated and the optimum NaOH solution consumption was 5.2 BV to regenerate resins.

  • There is an increasing interest in the development of rechargeable batteries suitable for use in both hybrid electric vehicles and energy storage systems that require higher charge & discharge rates, bigger battery sizes and increased safety of the batteries. Spinel-type lithium titanium oxide ($Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$) as a potential anode for lithium ion batteries has many advantages. It is a zero-strain materials and it experiences no structural change during the charge/discharge precess. Thus, it has long cycle life due to its structural integrity. It also offers a stable operation voltage of approximately 1.55 V versus $Li^+/Li$, above the reduction potential of most organic electrolyte. In this study, Ru added $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ composites were synthesized by solid state process. The characteristics of active material were investigated with TGA-DTA, XRD, SEM and charge/discharge test. The capacity was reduced when Ru was added, however, the polarization decreased. The capacity rate of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ with Ru (3%, 4%) addition was reduced during the charge/discharge precess with 10 C-rate as a high current density.

A Study on Thermal Properties of Epoxy Composites with Hybrid Fillers (하이브리드 필러를 함유한 에폭시 복합체의 열적 특성 연구)

  • In this study, the graded thermal properties of composites are obtained by difference in specific gravity of fillers including Cu, h-BN and GO powders in epoxy. Relatively heavy powders such as Cu and h-BN compared to GO mostly at the bottom layer, while light GO powders were dispersed in the top layer in the composites. The thermal conductivity of composites was gradually increased from 0.55 (0.52) W/mK to 2.82 (1.37) W/mK for GO/h-BN (GO/Cu) epoxy composites from surface to bottom. On the contrary, the coefficient of thermal expansion was decreased from 51 ppm/℃ to 23 ppm/℃ and from 57 ppm/℃ to 32 ppm/℃ for GO/Cu and GO/h-BN, respectively. The variation of thermal properties in composites is attributed due to intrinsic material properties of filler including thermal conductivity, morphology and the distribution by the specific weight of fillers. This simple strategy for realizing graded thermal composites by introducing different filler materials would be effective heat transfer at interface of heterostructure with large thermal properties such as inorganic semiconductor/plastic, metal/plastic, and semiconductor/metal.

Preparation of Nanostructures Using Layer-by-Layer Assembly and Applications (층상자기조립법을 이용한 나노구조체의 제조와 응용)

  • We introduce a novel and versatile approach for preparing self-assembled nanoporous multilayered films with antireflective properties. Protonated polystyrene-block-poly (4-vinylpyrine) (PS-b-P4VP) and anionic polystyrene-block-poly (acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) block copolymer micelles (BCM) were used as building blocks for the layer-by-layer assembly of BCM multilayer films. BCM film growth is governed by electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions between the oppositely BCMs. Both film porosity and film thickness are dependent upon the charge density of the micelles, with the porosity of the film controlled by the solution pH and the molecular weight (Mw) of the constituents. PS7K-b-P4VP28K/PS2K-b-PAA8K films prepared at pH 4 (for PS7K-b-P4VP28K) and pH 6 (for PS2K-b-PAA8K) are highly nanoporous and antireflective. In contrast, PS7K-b-P4VP28K/PS2K-b-PAA8K films assembled at pH 4/4 show a relatively dense surface morphology due to the decreased charge density of PS2K-b-PAA8K. Films formed from BCMs with increased PS block and decreased hydrophilic block (P4VP or PAA) size (e.g., PS36K-b-P4VP12K/PS16K-b-PAA4K at pH 4/4) were also nanoporous. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the nanostructured electrochemical sensors based on patterning methods show the electrochemical activities. Anionic poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) layers were selectively and uniformly deposited onto the catalase (CAT)-coated surface using the micro-contact printing method. The pH-induced charge reversal of catalase can provide the selective deposition of consecutive PE multilayers onto patterned PSS layers by causing the electrostatic repulsion between next PE layer and catalase. Based on this patterning method, the hybrid patterned multilayers composed of platinum nanoparticles (PtNP) and catalase were prepared and then their electrochemical properties were investigated from sensing $H_2O_2$ and NO gas. The Need for Weight Optimization by Design of Rolling Stock Vehicles

  • Energy savings can be achieved with optimum energy consumptions, brake energy regeneration, efficient energy storage (onboard, line side), and primarily with light weight vehicles. Over the last few years, the rolling stock industry has experienced a marked increase in eco-awareness and needs for lower life cycle energy consumption costs. For rolling stock vehicle designers and engineers, weight has always been a critical design parameter. It is often specified directly or indirectly as contractual requirements. These requirements are usually expressed in terms of specified axle load limits, braking deceleration levels and/or demands for optimum energy consumptions. The contractual requirements for lower weights are becoming increasingly more stringent. Light weight vehicles with optimized strength to weight ratios are achievable through proven design processes. The primary driving processes consist of: $\bullet$ material selection to best contribute to the intended functionality and performance $\bullet$ design and design optimization to secure the intended functionality and performance $\bullet$ weight control processes to deliver the intended functionality and performance Aluminium has become the material of choice for modern light weight bodyshells. Steel sub-structures and in particular high strength steels are also used where high strength - high elongation characteristics out way the use of aluminium. With the improved characteristics and responses of composites against tire and smoke, small and large composite materials made components are also found in greater quantities in today's railway vehicles. Full scale hybrid composite rolling stock vehicles are being developed and tested. While an "overdesigned" bodyshell may be deemed as acceptable from a structural point of view, it can, in reality, be a weight saving missed opportunity. The conventional pass/fail structural criteria and existing passenger payload definitions promote conservative designs but they do not necessarily imply optimum lightweight designs. The weight to strength design optimization should be a fundamental design driving factor rather than a feeble post design activity. It should be more than a belated attempt to mitigate against contractual weight penalties. The weight control process must be rigorous, responsible, with achievable goals and above all must be integral to the design process. It should not be a mere tabulation of weights for the sole-purpose of predicting the axle loads and wheel balances compliance. The present paper explores and discusses the topics quoted above with a view to strengthen the recommendations and needs for the weight optimization by design approach as a pro-active design activity for the rolling stock industry at large.

Spatial Characters of Workplace and Everyday Life of Immigrant Workers in S. Korea (한국 이주노동자의 일터와 일상생활의 공간적 특성)

  • This paper considers some kinds of socio-spatial constraints and strategies for overcoming them which immigrant workers in Korea have experienced in their work-place and life-space, with an analysis of questionnaire data and of direct interview materials on them. Though they appear somewhat satisfactory or positive with their work-place, this can be seen as a hypocritical or false attitude rather than a real one: they are forced to work with long hours (more than 70 hours per week) and rigid controls in the other' territory. Their daily life-spaces also are severe: they can be hardly embedded in an existing community with a sense of place due to serious institutional and interaction constraints, even though they seem to have a basic mobility to survive in life-spaces. In order to escape or alleviate such local constraints, they try to constitute multi-scalar (local, trans-regional, and transnational) networks, and to find informations and means to resolve or cope with them. However, this kind of endeavors of immigrant workers to make a trans-national network and social space has a limitation for them to be free entirely from constraints, which might be strengthened with a lack of geographical knowledge of them. Then immigrant workers in Korea live ineluctably with not only hybrid national identity but also with disturbed local identity in an aliened workplace and life-spaces.
