Characteristics of Coal Slurry Gasification under Partial Slagging Operating Condition (부분 용융 운전 조건에서 석탄슬러리 가스화 운전 특성)

  • Coal gasification technology is considered as next generation clean coal technology even though it uses coal as fuel which releases huge amount of greenhouse gas because it has many advantages for carbon capture. Coal or pet-coke slurry gasification is very attractive technology at present and in the future because of its low construction cost and flexibility of slurry feeding system in spite of lower efficiency compared to dry feeding technology. In this study, we carried out gasification experiment using bituminous coal slurry sample by integrating coal slurry feeding facility and slurry burner into existing dry feeding compact gasifier. Especially, our experiment was conducted under fairly lower operation temperature than that of existing entrained-bed gasifier, resulting in partial slagging operation mode in which only part of ash was converted to slag and the rest of ash was released as fly ash. Carbon conversion rate was calculated from data analysis of collected slag and ash, and then cold gas efficiency, which is the most important indicator of gasifier performance, was estimated by carbon mass balance method. Fairly high performance considering pilot-scale experiment, 98.5% of carbon conversion and 60.4% of cold gas efficiency, was achieved. In addition, soundness of experimental result was verified from the comparison with chemical equilibrium composition and energy balance calculations.

Ecological Traits of Weed Flora with Different Soil Moisture in Remodeled Paddy Field of Nakdong River (낙동강 리모델링 농경지 수분함량별 잡초발생 특성 분석)

  • Collection of weeds were done in 3 remodeled paddy fields located in different districts with different soil moisture conditions such as Samolpo district (14.6%), Gimhae (9.8%) and Chilhyun (5.6%). Remodeled paddy fields composed of 62 plant species belonging to 23 families. Among 23 families, Compositae was the largest family with 11 species belonged to (17.7%) followed by Poaceae with 9 species (14.5%), Leguminosae with 8 species (12.9%), Cyperaceae with 7 species (11.3%), and Polygonaceae with 5 species (8.1%). Summed dominance ratio of each species based on number, coverage, frequency, and plant height in Samolpo district was Echinochloa oryzoides (100%) > Cyperus difformis (9.0%) > Bidens frondosa (5.3%) > Panicum dichotomiflorum (4.8%) > Eclipta prostrata (4.4%). In Gimhae; Digitaria ciliaris (100%) > Panicum dichotomiflorum (49.4%) > Echinochloa oryzoides (48.8%) > Persicaria hydropiper (27.1%) > Chenopodium ficifolium (10.2%), and in Chilhyun were Panicum dichotomiflorum (90.8%) > Digitaria ciliaris (66.7%) > Cyperus iria (8.6%) > Bidens frondosa (7.6%). Total dry weight of weeds recorded was 535.4 g $m^{-2}$, 316.1 g $m^{-2}$ and 346.2 g $m^{-2}$ in Samolpo, Gimhae and Chilhyun districts, respectively. Simpson's index was calculated to 0.09~0.28, which showed that weed occurrence in remodeled paddy fields with different soil moistures varied.

  • New nonspecific immunostimulators (Koko enterprise Co., Ltd., Korea) were evaluated for its effectiveness as a nonspecific immunostimulator in pigs. The effects of new nonspecific immunostimulators were determined by analysis of cytokines using ELISA and blood-chemistry. IFN-r which is one of the cell mediated immune cytokines significantly increased in DIR-vitamineral 0.2% group posttreatment 4 weeks and was significantly higher IMF 0.2%, DIR-vita 0.1% and DIR-vitamineral 0.2% groups than control group in 3 months. DIR-vitamineral 0.2% had a most strong effectiveness as a nonspecific immunostimulator in our treatment materials in pigs. IMF 0.2% and DIR-vita 0.1% were seen that there had effectiveness of a nonspecific immunostimulator in posttreatment 3 months. IgG IgM and Total Ig which were humoral immune globulins, were not significantly changed in posttreatment 4 weeks and 3 months. In conclusion, this study has demonstrated that new nonspecific immunostimulators had an immunostimulatory effect on pigs through cell mediated immune response.

Ecotoxic Evaluations of BDE-47 and BDE-209 using Rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) (해산로티퍼 (Brachionus plicatilis)를 이용한 브롬화난연제 (BDE-47, BDE-209)의 생태독성평가)

  • The toxic assessment of the PBDEs (BDE-47, BDE-209) has been comprehensively investigated by using the rates of survival and population growth in the marine rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis. Chiefly, the survival rate was determined after a measurement of 24 hours of exposure to the BDE-47 (2,2'4,4'-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether) and the BDE-209 (2,2',4,4'-Decabromodiphenyl ether) was performed. The BDE-47 reduced survival rate in dose-dependent manner and a significant reduction were noted to have occurred at a concentration of greater than $3.9mg\;L^{-1}$, but the BDE-209 had no effect which was subsequently observed in this study. The population growth rate (r) was determined after 72 hours of exposure to toxicants in the study. It was observed that the r value in the controls (absence PBDEs) was greater than 0.5, and that it decreased as the dose-dependent manner as recorded. The survival rate when exposed to BDE-47 and BDE-209, $EC_{50}$ value was $13mg\;L^{-1}$ and $>1,000mg\;L^{-1}$, and population growth rate was $3.67mg\;L^{-1}$ and $862.75mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. Therefore, the BDE-47 is considered to be 76-235 times more harmful than the BDE-209 as noted. In this study, the ecotoxicological bioassay using a noted survival rate and population growth rate of B. plicatilis can be used as a baseline data for the continued establishment of the environmental quality standard of the incidences of the BDE-47 and BDE-209 in a marine environment.

Telomerase Activity in Primary Lung Cancers (원발성 폐암에 있어서 Telomerase 활성도에 대한 연구)

  • Background: Telomerase enzyme activity is not detected in most normal cells, a phonomenon believed to be associated with limitations on cellular proliferation. Since this activity is detected in nearly all human tumor, including lung cancers, it has been suggested that telomerase activation may be coupled to acquisition of malignant phenotype. In this study, we determined whether telomerase activity was associated with tumor pathologic stage. Methods: Primary tumor specimens obtained by bronchoscopic biopsies from 33 patients were analyzed. Telomerase activity was measured by means of a modified Telomeric Repeat Amplication Protocol(TRAP) assay. Results: Telomerase activity was detected in 23 of the 27 non-small-cell lung cancer and 5 of 6 small-cell lung cancer. A few primary tumors did not appear to have detectable telomerase activity. Positive associations were found between the telomerase-positive rate and tumor stage(p<0.05). Conclusion: High telomerase activity is detected frequently in primary lung cancers that exhibit high tumor cell proliferation rates and advanced pathologic stage.

Bioequivalence Evaluation of Two Cefquinome 2.5% Injectable Products in Piglets (돼지에서 두 가지 Cefquinome 2.5% 제제의 생물학적 동등성 평가)

  • Cefquinome, a fourth generation cephalosporin, has been solely used for veterinary medicine and has a broad antibacterial spectrum against gram-negatives and gram-positives being very stable to ${\beta}$-lactamases. This study was conducted to evaluate the bioequivalence of two cefquinome 2.5% products in piglets. Plasma cefquinome concentrations were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Mean maximum concentration ($C_{max}$) of test product ($Cequus^{(R)}$) and reference product ($Cobactan^{(R)}$) were $4.34{\pm}0.58$ and $4.22{\pm}0.47{\mu}g/mL$, and mean area under the concentration time curve ($AUC_{0{\rightarrow}{\infty}}$) values were $10.43{\pm}1.96$ and $10.25{\pm}2.98{\mu}g{\cdot}h/mL$, respectively. The 90% confidence intervals for the ratio of $C_{max}$ (0.941-1.115), and $AUC_{0{\rightarrow}{\infty}}$ (0.927-1.172) values for the test and reference products were within the acceptable bioequivalence limit of 0.80-1.25. It is concluded that two commercial cefquinome injectable solutions are bioequivalent in their extent of drug absorption in piglets.

Pharmacokinetics of Florfenicol and its Metabolite, Florfenicol Amine, in Broiler Chickens (육계에서의 플로르페니콜 및 그의 대사체인 플로르페니콜 아민의 약물동태학적 연구)

  • A study on bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of florfenicol was conducted in broilers following a single intravenous (i.v.) and oral (p.o.) doses of 20 mg/kg body weight (b.w.). Florfenicol concentrations in plasma were determined by a high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Plasma concentration-time data after i.v. administration were analyzed by a non-compartmental analysis. Following i.v. injection, the total body clearance was $0.74{\pm}0.25L/kg/h$ and the volume of distribution at steady-state was $1.16{\pm}0.19L/kg$. Florfenicol was rapidly distributed and eliminated following i.v. injection with $1.15{\pm}1.06h$ of elimination half-life. After oral administration, the calculated $C_{max}$ values ($8.18{\pm}0.97{\mu}g/mL$) were reached at $1.33{\pm}0.29h$ in broilers. The elimination half-life of florfenicol was $1.31{\pm}0.27h$ and the absolute bioavailability (F) was 75.46% after oral administration of florfenicol. Florfenicol amine, a major metabolite of florfenicol, was detected in all broilers after i.v. and p.o. administration of florfenicol. The observed $C_{max}$ values of florfenicol amine ($3.96{\pm}2.60\;and\;2.22{\pm}1.71{\mu}g/mL$) were reached at $0.16{\pm}0.19\;and\;1.61{\pm}1.02h$ after i.v. and p.o. administration of florfenicol, respectively. Florfenicol amine was eliminated with $1.88{\pm}0.39\;and\;2.64{\pm}1.39h$ of the elimination half-life after i.v. and p.o. administration of florfenicol, respectively.

Effects of Hairy Vetch and Rye Cover on Weed Occurrences and Minor Cereal Growth (피복작물처리에 따른 잡곡의 생육과 잡초발생)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the weed suppressing effects of two winter cover crops, hairy vetch and rye in foxtail millet and sorghum fields in 2010. Crop growth and development and weed occurrences in the fields were examined to know the efficiency of proposed cropping system. In hairy vetch treated plots, heading of minor cereals occurred early. The heading date was earlier by 1 day and 2 days in sorghum and foxtail millet, respectively. However, rye treatment delayed heading by 12 days and 8 days in sorghum and foxtail millet, respectively. Besides he effect of cover crop on ear emergence of crops, the Besides changed growth-related characteristics. Plant height, chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence of sorghum ere increased in hairy vetch treatment by 46.4% 88.7% and 7.9%, respectively. In foxtail millet, the characteristics ere also increased by 45.6%, 50.9% and 37.8%, respectively, s compared to control. Yields of sorghum and foxtail millet were increased by 105.1% and 135% as compared o control by hairy vetch treatment, respectively. However, he yields of cereal crops were decreased by rye cover crop treatment, the yields of sorghum and foxtail millet were decreased by 25.8% and 119.1%, respectively. Rye cover crop treatment inhibited crop growth suggesting nitrogen starvation in rye treated plots. In rye treatment, plant height, chlorophyll contents and chlorophyll fluorescence of sorghum ere slightly decreased by 7.1%, 10.8% and 10.8%, respectively, as compared to control whereas the inhibitory effects were greater in foxtail millet. Weed occurrences based n weed number in hairy vetch and rye plots were reduced n weed number in hairy vetch and rye plots were reduced y 27% and 20%, respectively. The smothering effect was weakened or disappeared after heading of crops. Weed number and dry weight in hairy vetch plot were increased by 159% and 55.2%, respectively, as compared to control. The results implied that weed suppressing of cover crops could be reduced drastically after heading of crops.

Toxic effects of phenanthrene on fertilization and normal embryogenesis rates of Mesocentrotus nudus and Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus (둥근성게(Mesocentrotus nudus)와 말똥성게(Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus)의 수정 및 정상 배아발생률을 이용한 Phenanthrene의 독성영향)

  • The aim of this study was to define the toxic effects of phenanthrene (PAHs) on the fertilization and normal embryogenesis rates in the two species of sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus and Mesocentrotus nudus). The sperm and fertilized eggs of both sea urchin species were exposed to serial dilutions of phenanthrene for 10 min and 48 hours, respectively. The fertilization rate and normal embryogenesis rate of H. pulcherrimus and M. nudus were decreased in a concentration-dependent manner. The EC50 for the fertilization rate of H. pulcherrimus and M. nudus was 17.48 mg L-1 and 16.21 mg L-1, and the EC50 for the normal embryogenesis rate was 2.99 mg L-1 and 0.36 mg L-1, respectively. Between the two species, H. pulcherrimus was more sensitive to phenanthrene exposure, and 48 h normal embryogenesis was the more sensitive endpoint. Therefore, the results of this study demonstrated that the exposure of both sea urchin species to phenanthrene caused alterations in egg fertilization and the early developmental stages.

Changes in Starch Synthesis and the Characteristics of Photosynthate Translocation at High Temperature during the Ripening Stage in Barley (보리 등숙기 고온에 따른 전분합성 및 동화산물 전류 특성 변화)

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of high temperature on the stem, leaf and grain of barley during the ripening period and to provide information for the development of high-temperature cultivation techniques and adaptive varieties. We used an artificial climate control facility, to provide a temperature $3^{\circ}C$ higher than the normal average temperature during the ripening stage. Although the maximum rate of starch synthesis was increased at high temperature by approximately 11%, the starch content was decreased, because the period of starch synthesis ended 4 days earlier. As in the case of starch synthesis, the expression of genes related to starch synthesis was increased at the early ripening stage in the high temperature treatment, however, the duration of expression tended to decrease rapidly. Furthermore, the partitioning rate of assimilation products in the panicle increased to a greater extent in the high temperature treatment than in the control. In contrast, for the stem and leaf, the partitioning rate of assimilation products decreased more rapidly in the high temperature treatment than in the control. On the basis of these results, it can be considered that the translocation rate of assimilation products increased to a greater extent in the high temperature treatment than in the control at the early ripening stage. These results indicate that the decrease in grain weight at high temperature during the ripening stage is attributable to an increase in the speed of starch synthesis at high temperature, but the increase in ripening speed does not compensate for the shortening of the ripening period. Finally to develop varieties and cultivation techniques suited to high temperature, we need to focus on physiological characteristics related to the duration of starch synthesis.
