A newborn girl with harlequin ichthyosis genetically confirmed by ABCA12 analysis

  • Harlequin ichthyosis (HI, OMIM #242500) is one of the most severe skin diseases among the autosomal recessive congenital ichthyoses, with high morbidity and mortality, particularly in newborns. Clinically, it is characterized by a typical appearance of generalized, thick, yellowish, hyperkeratotic plates with deep erythematous fissures on the skin. Herein, we present the case of a newborn girl with HI that was genetically confirmed by targeted gene panel analysis. The premature baby was encased in an opaque white membrane with erosion covering the skin of the entire body except the lips, with her hands and feet restricted by the membrane. Humidification, emollient, and retinoic acid treatment were started; the thick ichthyosis gradually peeled off and the underlying skin was only covered with thin scales. Targeted gene panel analysis using next-generation sequencing and validation with Sanger sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses confirmed compound heterozygous mutations of the ABCA12 gene (p.N1380S and a partial gene deletion encompassing exon 9). The parents were carriers for each of the identified mutations. Early recognition of the genetic etiology of congenital ichthyosis can, thus, facilitate genetic counseling for patients and their families.

  • 고빈도환기법시에 생길 수 있는 기관 및 기관지의 손상의 정도를 알아 보고자 저자들은 13마리의 고양이를 대상으로 CMV와 HFOV을 각각 6시간동안 사용후 폐의 조직 병리소견을 비교하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) CMV와 HFOV 사용군에서 기관 및 기관지 손상의 정도의 차이에는 통계적으로는 유의한 차이가 없었다. 2) 상피 세포내 점액의 소실은 CMV군에서 다소 더 심하였다. 3) 폐실질병변으로 폐기종은 CMV군에서 더 심하였다. 이상의 결과로 건강한 고양이에서 비교적 짧은 기간동안에 사용한 CMV와 HFOV군에서 기관 및 손상의 차이는 저명하지 않았으나, CMV군에서 다소 더 세포기능의 장애가 초래되었을 것으로 생각되며 또한 폐압손상도 더 받았을 것으로 추측된다.

A Seasonal Indoor Thermal Conditions of a Newly-launched Training Ship

  • The living performances of crews and passengers in cabins have been less received attention, while Korea is a top leading country in ship building industry. To develop a high value added ships like 5-star cruisers, researches on the comfort and productivity in cabins should be carried out with urgent. The purpose of this study is to measure and analyze of the ship's indoor thermal conditions in spring, summer and winter, and also to compare the seasonal differences, of which conditions are supplied from and controlled by marine HVAC The temperature, humidity and air supply volume of 5 different needs of cabins on a training ship were measured through a year, which was launched at Dec. 2005 and totally 246 crews can go on board for education. The following results were obtained: (1)In the spring, the temperature in cabins was measured as $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ and humidity was below 30%. (2)In the summer, the temperatures was controlled at $21{\sim}27^{\circ}C$ in almost cabins and humidity was between $40{\sim}60%$ which is known as comfort conditions. (3)In the winter, temperature and humidity was maintained between $19{\sim}26^{\circ}C$, and humidity was between $10{\sim}50%$. (4)It is clear that the humidity conditions in cabins are not properly controlled at all through a year to satisfy the Comfort Standards provided by ASHRAE and/or ISO, In conclusion, humidification and dehumidification of cabins must be treated with importance for more comfort living and working environments for crews and passengers.

목질판상재로 제조된 탄화보드의 흡방습 성능 비교 (Comparison of Moisture Absorption/Desorption Properties of Carbonized Boards Made from Wood-Based Panels)

  • 본 연구에서는 중밀도섬유판, 파티클보드, 배향성스트랜드보드, 합판을 이용하여 탄화보드를 제조하고 각각의 흡방습 특성을 살펴보았다. 탄화보드는 $600^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 동안 열분해하는 조건으로 제조되었다. 그 결과, 탄화합판, 탄화OSB, 탄화MDF, 탄화파티클보드 순으로 높은 흡방습 성능을 나타내었다. 흡습률 및 방습률은 탄화파티클보드를 제외한 나머지 탄화보드들 간에 큰 차이는 발견하지 못했다. 이것은 목질재료가 탄화됨으로서 탄소로 변환되어 수분을 흡착하는데 높은 능력을 가졌지만 수분이 내부구조로까지의 이동에 있어서는 목재 본래의 구조에 영향을 받는다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 목재의 구조의 특성을 살려 탄소화 했을 때 높은 흡방습 특성을 가진 탄화보드를 제조할 수 있다.

Preparation and Characterization of Nafion Composite Membranes Containing 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Tetracyanoborate

  • The composite membranes using Nafion as matrix and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetracyanoborate (EMITCB) as ion-conducting medium in replacement of water were prepared and characterized. The amount of EMITCB in Nafion varied from 30 to 50wt%. The composite membranes are characterized by ion conductivity, thermogravitational analyses (TGA) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The composite membranes containing EMITCB of 40wt% showed the maximum ionic conductivity which was ~0.0146 S $cm^{-1}$ at 423.15 K. It is inferred that the decrease in ionic conductivity of all the composite membranes might be due to the decomposition of a tetracyanoboric acid formed in the composite membranes. The results of SAXS indicated that the ionic clusters to conduct proton in the composite membranes were successfully formed. In accordance with the results of ionic conductivity as a function of a reciprocal temperature, SAXS showed a proportional decrease in scattering maximum $q_{max}$ as the amount of EMITCB increases in the composite membranes, which results in the increase in ionomer cluster size. The TGA showed no significant decomposition of the ionic liquid as well as the composite membranes in the range of operating temperature ($120-150^{\circ}C$) of high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HTPEMFC). As a result, EMITCB is able to play an important role in transferring proton in the composite membranes at elevated temperatures with no external humidification for proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

  • 화학에너지를 전기에너지로 전환하는 친환경 에너지 자원으로 각광받는 연료전지에서 고분자 전해질 연료전지(proton exchange membrane fuel cell, PEMFC)의 비싼 백금촉매 사용, 고온가습조건에서의 전도도 감소 등의 문제로 음이온교환연료전지(anion exchange membrane fuel cell, AEMFC)가 주목을 받고 있다. 음이온교환연료전지는 비백금계 촉매를 사용하고 산소환원반응의 활성화 에너지가 낮아 효율이 더 우수한 장점이 있다. 하지만, 이산화탄소에 노출되어 전극손상, 이온전도도 감소 등의 문제점을 포함하여 여러 가지 해결해야 할 문제점이 있다. 따라서, 본 미니총설은 음이온 교환연료전지의 다양한 문제점을 여러 연구논문을 통해서 해결방안을 제시하고자 한다.

The Use of Matriderm and Autologous Skin Graft in the Treatment of Full Thickness Skin Defects

  • Background For patients with full thickness skin defects, autologous Split-thickness skin grafts (STSG) are generally regarded as the mainstay of treatment. However, skin grafts have some limitations, including undesirable outcomes resulting from scars, poor elasticity, and limitations in joint movement due to contractures. In this study, we present outcomes of Matriderm grafts used for various skin tissue defects whether it improves on these drawbacks. Methods From January 2010 to March 2012, a retrospective review of patients who had undergone autologous STSG with Matriderm was performed. We assessed graft survival to evaluate the effectiveness of Matriderm. We also evaluated skin quality using a Cutometer, Corneometer, Tewameter, or Mexameter, approximately 12 months after surgery. Results A total of 31 patients underwent STSG with Matriderm during the study period. The success rate of skin grafting was 96.7%. The elasticity value of the portion on which Matriderm was applied was 0.765 (range, 0.635-0.800), the value of the trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) was 10.0 (range, 8.15-11.00)$g/hr/m^2$, and the humidification value was 24.0 (range, 15.5-30.0). The levels of erythema and melanin were 352.0 arbitrary unit (AU) (range, 299.25-402.75 AU) and 211.0 AU (range, 158.25-297.00 AU), respectively. When comparing the values of elasticity and TEWL of the skin treated with Matriderm to the values of the surrounding skin, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. Conclusions The results of this study demonstrate that a dermal substitute (Matriderm) with STSG was adopted stably and with minimal complications. Furthermore, comparing Matriderm grafted skin to normal skin using Cutometer, Matriderm proved valuable in restoring skin elasticity and the skin barrier.

고분자 전해질막 연료전지의 활성화를 위한 CV 활성화법 (Application of CV Cycling to the Activation of the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell)

  • 고분자 전해질막 연료전지의 대량 생산을 위하여 막-전극 접합체(MEA) 활성화 방법의 개발이 중요한 현안이다. 현재 개발된 MEA활성화 방법은 시간이 많이 소요됨으로 인해 수소의 사용량 또한 증가하여 연료전지의 상용화에 큰 걸림돌이 되고 있다. 통상적인 활성화 방법은 활성화 원리를 주로 전해질 수화 관점에서 이해하였다. 반면, 본 논문에서 제안된 순환전압전류(cyclic voltammetry, CV) 활성화 방법은 전해질 및 촉매적 관점에서 별도로 분리하여 이해하였다. 따라서 전해질 관점에서는 상대 습도 100%인 가습된 질소를 공급하여 전극 및 막의 전해질을 수화시키는 과정으로 구성되고, 촉매적 관점에서는 CV 사이클을 수행하여 백금 촉매에 흡착되어 있는 불필요한 오염물질, 또는 산화피막을 제거하는 과정으로 수행된다. CV 활성화법은 2.5 h 내에 활성화가 종료되어 활성화 시간을 크게 단축시킬 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 수소 사용량도 기존 활성화 방법에 비하여 1/4 이하로 감소시킬 수 있어서 효과적인 연료전지 활성화 방법으로 제안하고자 한다.

Development of a Ventilation Model for Mushroom House Using Adiabatic Panel

  • In this study, a ventilation model was developed to determine a ventilation rate for the balance of heat, moisture and $CO_{2}$ in a mushroom house. Internal and external temperature, relative humidity and $CO_{2}$ concentration were measured and used to validate the ventilation model. The effects of various environmental factors on physiological responses of mushroom were also investigated. The verified model was simulated under the observed ventilation rates with a difference of$ 0.001{\~}0.065\;m^{3}{\cdot}S^{-1}$ (relative error of $0.3{\~}18.9\%$) when external temperature varied 22.5 to $24.8^{circ}C$ and average ventilation rates was $0.35m^{3}{\cdot}S^{-1}$. The optimal conditions for mushroom growth (internal temperature $22 ^{circ}C$, relative humidity $80\%$, $CO_{2}$ concentration 1,000 ppm) were used for the model application with external temperature, relative humidity and $CO_{2}$ concentration of $27.5{\~}33.5^{circ}C$, $60\%$, and 355 ppm, respectively. Thermal balance was a important factor for an optimum ventilation up to the external temperature of $32^{circ}C$, while $CO_{2}$ concentration balance was more important over $32^{circ}C$. This suggests that humidification for moisture balance is required to maintain temperature and $CO_{2}$ concentration at an optimal level by ventilation in a mushroom house.

셀룰로오스와 PET 복합체로 만들어진 가정용 가습소자 (Residential Humidifying Element Made of Cellulose and PET Composite)

  • 실내의 습도제어를 위하여 가습기가 필요하다. 이 중 기화식 가습기는 구조가 간단하고 에너지 소모가 적은 장점이 있다. 하지만 가습기의 핵심 부품인 소자는 일본 제품이 사용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 일본 제품을 대체할 셀룰로오스와 PET 복합체로 만들어진 가습소자를 개발하고 일본 제품의 성능과 비교하였다. 시험은 소자를 항온항습실 내에 설치된 흡입식 풍동 입구에 설치하고 가습량과 압력손실을 측정하였다. 개발품의 가습 효율이 일본 제품에 비하여 2%~4% 우수하고 압력 손실도 일본 제품에 비하여 23%~32% 적게 나타났다. 또한 동일 압력손실에서 가습 성능을 의미하는 $j_m/f$의 값도 개발품에서 5%에서 28% 크게 나타났다. 한편 개발품의 물 흡수도는 일본 제품에 비하여 작게 나타났는데 향후 이 부분에 대한 보완이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.
