  • Atmospheric pressure plasma is used in the biological and medical fields. Miniaturization and safety are important in the application of apply atmospheric plasma to bio devices. In this study, we made a small, pocket-sized inverter for the discharge of atmospheric plasma. We used pulse power to control the neutral gas temperature at which the, when plasma was discharged. We used direct current of 5 V of bias(voltage). The output voltage is about 1 to 2 kilo volts the frequency is about 80 kilo hertz. We analyzsed the characteristics of the atmospheric plasma using OES(Optical emission spectroscopy) and the Current-Voltage characteristic of pulse power. By calculating of the current voltage characteristics, we were able to determine that, when the duty ratio increased, the power that actually effects the plasma discharge also increased. To apply atmospheric plasma to human organisms, the temperature is the most important factor, we were able to control the temperature by modulating the pulse power duty ratio. This means we can use atmospheric plasma on the human body or in other areas of the medical field.

  • A physiological pharmacokinetic hybrid model was developed in order to predict the disposition kinetics of diphenylhydantoin (DPH) in the brain from the plasma conentration data of DPH. The model was constructed under the assumptions of well-stirred, plasma flow-limited and lienar tissue diposition kinetics of DPH. DPH was administered intravenously to the rats at a dose of 10 mg/kg together with/without sodium salicylate (SA;10 mg/kg) and the DPH concentrations in the plasma and brain were determined. Plasma protein binding of DPH concentrations in the plasma and brain were determined. Plasma protein binding of DPH was also determined using equilibrium dialysis technique. Then the model was tested for its predictability of DPH concentrations in the brian from the plasma data of DPH. It was found that the predicted values of DPH concentrations in the brian were in fair agreement with the experimental values in the rats of both treatments. The 2-fold increase in the brain concentration of DPH by SA-coadinistration was predicted well from the plasma concentration and plasma free fraction ($f_p$) data of DPH using the model. Therefore, the hybrid model was concluded to be very useful for the prediction of the concentrations of DPH in the brain from the plasma concentration data. Finally, DPH concentrations in the human brian was calculated using this model from plasma DPH data in the literature, yet the scale-up of this model to the human is not convinced.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of cellulose and pectin on glucose and plasma lipid concentrations in healthy women. Eight female collage students were participated voluntarily. All subjects received a fiber-free control diet (CD), cellulose diet (CED), pectin diet (PTD) with each diet for a period of three days with a 4 day interval. The food intake of subjects were monitored every day and plasma level of glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol were determined at last day. Blood glucose, plasma triglyceride, total cholesterol were measured at fasting state and 30, 60, 90, 120, and 180 minute after consuming each diet. Plasma glucose concentrations (AUC: Area Under the Curve) of pectin diet was $122.7{\pm}4.0mg/dl$ and that of cellulose diet was $147.6{\pm}8.4mg/d$, but they were significantly lower than in comparison with those of control diet ($197.1{\pm}11.6mg/dl$) (p<0.05) Plasma triglyceride concentrations of the CED ($-83.9{\pm}22.2mg/dl$) PTD ($-9.7{\pm}26.1mg/dl$) showed gradual decrease after each test diet feeding but not significantly different in each dietary fiber added diet (p<0.05). Plasma cholesterol concentrations of the CD was not significantly different in PTD, but PTD was significantly lower than the CED until 3 hours after consuming each test meal (p<0.05). In conclusion, in spite of total cholesterol was reduced only by pectin, glucose and triglyceride were lower than control diet in dietary fiber intake. But there were no significant differences each dietary fiber.

  • The biocompatibility of materials used for biomedical applications depends on chemical composition, mechanical stiffness, surface energy, and roughness. The plasma treatment and etching process is a very important technology in the biomedical fields due to possibility of controlling the surface chemistry and properties of materials. In this work, $N_2/H_2$ plasma were treated on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) paper and characterization of treated SWCNTs paper was carried out. Also we investigated neurite outgrowth from SH-SY5Y on treated SWCNTs paper. The results indicated that $N_2/H_2$ plasma-modified SWCNTs paper enhanced neuronal cell adhesion, viability, neurite outgrowth and branching in vitro and exerted a positive role on the health of neural cells.

  • A column-switching semi-micro HPLC method with fluorescence detection was developed for the direct analysis of rebamipide in human plasma. Plasma was filtered through a 0.45 $\mu\textrm{m}$ membrane filter and 5 ${\mu}\ell$ of the filtrate was directly injected onto the pre-column. After elution of the plasma proteins to waste, the retained rebamipide and internal standard(ofloxacin) were transferred to a C18 semi-microcolumn (5$\mu\textrm{m}$, 150 ${\times}$2.0mm) where they were separated using acetonitrile-1.4% acetic acid (40:60, v/v) as mobile phase. • In order to assay the human plasma concentration of nifedipine in patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and pulmonary hypertension, a modified high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was applied. The retention times for nifedipine and an internal standard (11-ketoprogesterone) were $10.5\;{\pm}\;0.41$ and $13.1\;{\pm}\;0.63$ min, respectively. Absolute recovery from the plasma was $102.9\;{\pm}\;7.07%$. Reproducibility was excellent and variability between the runs was small. There was a negligible degradation during the assay procedure. The calibration curve shows a good linearity in the range of the desired plasma concentrations of nifedipine. A stability test of nifedipine in the human plasma shows 8 and 13% degradation during the storage of 5 and 9 months, respectively. There were no interferences on the HPLC assay with any possible medications for the BPD. The method has been used to monitor the drug concentrations in a patient. The concentration-time curve of a patient after a single oral dose of 0.3 mg/kg shows a double-peak phenomenon that was quite different from the previous report, suggesting non-bolus administration. However the hemodynamic responses were corresponding to the plasma concentration levels of nifedipine.

  • The present study was conducted to find out whether there are some differences in plasma carnitine levels among young-, middle-, and old-aged normal Korean women. Daily food intake, body fat content, plasma lipids and carnitine levels were measured in 153 samples from 44 young (20-24 years old), 49 middle-aged (30-49 years old), and 63 old (65-85 years old) normal volunteers. The differences in concentrations of nonesterified acylcarnitine and acid-soluble acylcarnitine were not statistically significant among them. However, acid insoluble acylcarnitine (AIAC) level in plasma decreased with age. Moreover, total carnitine (TCNE) level in the young group was significantally higher than in old and middle-aged groups. Body fat content in the young group was significantly lower than in old and middle-aged groups. Plasma total cholesterol increased with age and triglycerides in the old group were significantly higher than in young and middle-aged groups. These results suggest that the higher levels of AIAC and TCNE in the young group may be a reflection of their lipid metabolic state, which is different from middle-aged and old groups.
