With the recent increase in the number of foreign settlers in our country, a societal system is needed which they can adapt to more easily. The results of the study were as follows. First, from the result of analyzing the 171 programs of the multi-cultural family support system, it could be seen that in order for the marriage immigrants to more successfully adapt, various programs are needed. Second, when the study had an interview with 13 marriage immigrants from China, Vietnam and Philippine about their adaptation to residential environment, they had a high satisfaction with their residential environment when their spouses' educational level was high. In, they appraised that South Korea was superior to their native land in scale and facilities of buildings and the buildings of their native land were superior to those in South Korea in terms of soundproof applications, natural lighting and ventilation, which were indoor environmental elements. Third, they were generally satisfied with their residential environment. However, they stated that it took 6 months~ two years to adapt to the Korean residential environment because of the differences in the residential environment compared to their homeland. A based on the research result, the housing adviser is necessary in the marriage immigrants.
The purpose of this study was to review the conceptual framework of social constructionism and critical social constructionism in the research area of multi-cultural family homes, using a literature review. Fopp argued that social constructionism had an objectivation problem that only considered the actor side as a policy object; therefore he suggested a weaker social constructionist perspective with moderate relativism and the application of feminist epistemology to marginal life for maximizing objectivity. This article explores a conceptual framework for studying the reality of housing of multi-cultural families in Korea in the light of constructionist ideas and presents a review of empirical positivist data to support the framework. Based on results, using the social constructionist framework, five contexts (structural, institutional, organizational, operational, and intersubjective) were reviewed and ideas were suggested to develop an appropriate future situation for multi-cultural family homes. For a weaker social constructionist framework, three National Survey of Multi-Cultural Family Homes data sets were reviewed to determine the real condition of multi-cultural family homes. Further, from a feminist perspective, the empirical data of marginalized multi-cultural family homes were reviewed from the perspectives of gender inequality of decision making, cultural adaptation, and differentiation in housing related areas. In conclusion, two perspectives were useful for understanding multi-cultural family housing in Korea but must be compensated with substantial empirical data for a holistic approach.
This study examined the nature of multi-cultural families' housing problems living in South Korea. A qualitative research was conducted through in-depth interviews with immigrant women from three Southeast Asian countries. The subjects of this study were 15 married immigrants from the Philippine, Cambodia, and Vietnam living in Seoul. The major findings were as follows: firstly, reciprocity for the in-between person and environment: the preferred to blend into Korean society instead of making a community based on national origin. Secondly, intention to housing: all participants were passive about moving and the Vietnamese and Cambodians placed more importance on the family community than the Filipinas. Thirdly, meaning of housing and interaction: for the most important area in the house, the Vietnamese and Cambodians stated that rooms were for a couple and treated family space more importantly than Filipinas who pursuit personal comfort. Fourthly, housing adaptation process: adapting to climate difference between home countries and Korea was the biggest difficulty. Fifthly, residential satisfaction/dissatisfaction: mostly satisfied with housing facilities; however, they were dissatisfied with the number of rooms and house size due to a necessity for personal space. In conclusion, ideas implied from native country of married immigrants in multicultural families did not change significantly in preference of the current environment. The needs for an ethnic community was not great, because they seemed able to assimilate positively by living with a Korean husband and relatives. Gradual assimilation through a cultural acculturation process can be considered desirable.
This research is aimed at the development of Long Life Housing, which can realize sustainable construction and environment. It also promotes practical use of Long Life Housing with evaluation of the field application through Mockup House. This research is one of the important tools to realize Long Life Housing and deducts various traditional design's element technology to cope with demands of change of life cycle and style of residents. this study set three elements of plans for modernization in the traditional design factors that opening, wall and bottom as space composition elements of interior facts. first, Jang-ji wall and storage wall system separated from elements of wall that applied modernize elements of the wall. second, element of opening was restructure swing-lift-up opening system into modernize. third, maru and toet-maru system separated from elements of bottom that was applied modernize elements of the bottom. each elements segregation with four types as basic type, separate type, movable type and mixed type. This research make a proposal of plans for modernization in the traditional design factors, aimed at Long Life Housing through these four types blend. In addition, it points to promote realization of the sustainable 'Korea-style Long Life Housing' through modernization.
Characteristics of color application indicated from Kirchsteigfeld is presented the various points of view to be preserved urban housing color. The era of globalization has ushered in dramatic changes in the past decade covering a wide range of distinct political, economic and cultural trends whereby people adapt their houses to suit their needs and desires. This paper discusses the process of change analytically, emphasizing the importance of understanding the transformation of Lao traditional houses and its impact factors to the transformation and adaptation to suit with globalization trend, and conservation of the characteristics of traditional houses. This study takes place in Luangprabang, an ancient city of Lao PDR, which was designated as a world heritage city in 1995 as it is rich with diverse, tangible and intangible values. Five cases of traditional house in Luangprabang are examined to understand their transformation through time, by analyzing the basic spatial formation, components and elements, especially to find out the impact factors to such transformation. The study revealed that the transformation of the traditional house is subject to not just one single factor, but to a number of factors, where globalization, regulation, economy, and social aspect factors play a prime role and are the root for all these changes. The case study also indicates that these changes are connected to the benefits of income generation as a survival strategy for the low and middle-income people in Luangprabang as well as the housing demands. In the transition period a new residential type appeared accordingly, in which living spaces were categorized according to their general functions. There was a harmony between people's needs and the physical characteristics of the house.
Rapid social change affects residential environments and this in turn creates new stimuli to which people have to adapt. These stimuli have been seen to increase stress levels. Therefore, dwellers in these environments try to reduce stress through various methods. The purpose of this paper is to: 1) identify the general trends of coping styles about residential environmental stress, 2) analyze the differences in socio-demographic characteristics and how the physical characteristics of buildings affect stress, find out how personal backgrounds affect stress levels and the ability to get rid of environmental-related stress. The subjects in this study consisted of people living in multi-family housing in Gwangju. The city is divided into 5 districts and used quota sampling. 324 housewives were surveyed from the households by self-administered questionnaires. The survey was conducted in December, 2006, after the questionnaire was revised based on the results of preliminary survey. After all the questionnaires were collected, the data was coded and analyzed using the SPSS 12.0 program. This study confirmed that the manner in which those in multi-family housing coped with stress. Especially, we need a policy which seriously considers residents who are of low social-economic standing. As well as being exposed to residential environmental stress, they also have no means to deal with it. The age of a building had a strong impact on coping styles about residential environmental stress. We have to make special studies about the adaptive reuse of buildings for the reduction of residential environmental stress and to greatly improve coping styles. In conclusion, it emphasized the importance of education, information, and economic aid. Reasonable housing management would surely lead to a rise in residential satisfaction and the promotion of residential welfare.

The Purpose of this study is to find the land use condition and housing development of hillside areas in Busan metropolitan city. For this purpose, data of land use in more than meters above the sea level 80m are collected and analysed. The results of this study provide that 44.22% of the area of Busan hold more than meters above the sea level 80m and many aged buildings occupy the hillside areas. Moreover 30.13% of the redevelopment zone in housing redevelopment hold more than meters above the sea level 80m. In consequence, buildings of hillside areas should be maintained and it is necessary to make topographical adaptation plan. Based on these findings this study suggests that introduce the Conjoint Renewal Program.
Purpose: Urban heat island and Heat wave raise urban temperature and create damage of human life. Growing up as quantitative supply to solve shortage of housing, Urban residential area in Korea have a low rate of nature surface and heavily population makes temperature rise. Most houses in the declined residential area are multi-family rental housing and have many factors congesting housing environment such as narrow in-between space, outdoor staircases, walls and semi-basement floor, which make thermal environment getting worse. Most of the residents in this area are small tenants vulnerable to climate change adaptation, This damage is expected to be even greater. This study focus on multiple dwelling in urban residential area prone to temperature rise and draw temperature adaption method that can apply to multiple dwelling.
This study has been performed to explore process of forming low cost small site housing communities and residential lives of the young elderly around small cities along rural counties of America and Canada, and suggest future implications for Korea. In this study, five low cost small housing zones such as cottage and mobile home parks in non-metropolitan counties of California and Ontario State such as Weed, Paradise, Sun City,, Wellington on the Lake, and Trenton were visited and the elderly residents and service experts were interviewed. The senior concentrating housing clusters were formed primarily from influx of both metropolitan and rural residents for the purpose of seeking warmful localities, traffic connections, and business purposes in theme focused production areas. On the other hand, residential lives in the zones are occasionally negatively influenced by unbalanced concentrations of elderly facilities such as nursing stations and funeral homes. For the future of Korean rural elderly policies, suggestions are made as follows: first, integrated forms of urban and rural township need to be settled as attracting places for early retiring people who seek low cost pastoral oriented but culturally activated environment. Second, a model town of mobile housing structures needs to be initiated as a measure of evaluating adaptation process of those movers. Third, a cooperation system among governmental ministries needs to be formed in order to integrate a long term master plan of establishing traditional rural town of independent housing districts. fourth, productive and active lifestyles need to be maintained for government lead retirement rural villages by limiting expansion of nursing related facilities around the independent areas. Fifth, visiting welfare service programs and volunteer groups need to be further developed for the housing area especially in winter time, when social integration and emotional comforts are extremely limited.
