  • Since 1971 when the nation wide 'New Community' movement was launched to improve rural standards of living, dol and thatched-roof houses have been reshaped or removed, thereby making it hard to find time-honored people's living structures in the countryside. Since 1977, the improvement work of rural houses has started throughout the country, so many new rural residences have been constructing along the highway, main roads, railways and around the sightseeing area, New rural houses do not show, for the most part, the traditional architectural style and the nation's unique conventional ways of living. The writer tried to find solutions to the problems derived from improvement work of rural residence, in a comparative method of traditional rural houses and newly constructed rural ones. The greater part of new rural houses' types, painting colors, and fence types had been recommended by provincial administrative trative officials. Officials recommended them to the farmer with their standards, which did not consider farmer's convenience of traditional way of life, but a fine sight from the highways or railways. Korea's three basic roof types are the HAPKAK roof (gabled and hipped), the UCHINKAK roof(hipped), and the BAKKOONG roof(gabled). However, the gabled roof houses, having their entrance on the gabled side, are found more ofter in new rural village. As mentioned above, architectural style is not harmonious with the topography and climate i Korea, because it is not Korean traditional type, but one of the western styles. And new rural house plans are inconvenient in the conservation rural family system, because of the same category with urban houses plans. Other problems derived from ton-traditional architecture style are roof painting in 4-5 colors in a new village, types of wall and fence, and attached building in the site.

  • Among the energy consumption in building, the heating energy takes the largest part. Therefore, it is important to minimize the heat energy loss in building for the reduction of overall energy use in construction. The most important points for the minimization of energy loss in building are insulation and airtightness. Especially, in wood houses, airtightness is very important for energy saving as well as increase of durability. However, the researches on airtightness of wood buildings have been started recently and are very deficient especially in Korea. In this study, air leakage properties and airtightness performance were evaluated for light-frame wood houses built in Daejeon and Chungnam area. Total 7 houses were evaluated, among which four houses (Case 1 to Case 4) were in the construction stage before interior finish and the other three houses (Case 5 to Case 7) were after completion of construction work. The tests for airtightness were conducted by pressurization-depressurization method, and the factors included in the measurements includes air leakage rate at 50 Pa (CMH50), air change rate at 50 Pa (ACH50), equivalent leakage area (EqLA) and EqLA per floor area. As a result of this study, key air leakage points in wood houses were found to be the gaps between floor and wall, the holes for wiring and plumbing, the double glasses windows and the entrance doors. The average value of ACH50 for the houses after completion of construction work was $3.5h^{-1}$ that was similar to Europe standard ($3.0h^{-1}$). ACH50 was proportional to EqLA per floor area but inversely proportional to the internal volume, the net floor area and the area of window.

  • Particulate matter (PM) produced in pig houses may contain microbes which can spread by airborne transmission, and PM and microbes in PM adversely affect human and animal health. To investigate the microbiome in PM from pig houses, nine PM samples were collected in summer 2020 inside and outside of pig houses located in Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do Province, Korea, comprising three PM samples from within a nursery pig house (I-NPH), three samples from within a finishing pig house (I-FPH), and three samples from outside of the pig houses (O-PH). Microbiomes were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Firmicutes was the most dominant phylum and accounted for 64.8%-97.5% of total sequences in all the samples, followed by Proteobacteria (1.4%-21.8%) and Bacteroidetes (0.3%-13.7%). In total, 31 genera were represented by > 0.3% of all sequences, and only Lactobacillus, Turicibacter, and Aerococcus differed significantly among the three PM sample types. All three genera were more abundant in the I-FPH samples than in the O-PH samples. Alpha diversity indices did not differ significantly among the three PM types, and a principal coordinate analysis suggested that overall microbial communities were similar across PM types. The concentration of PM did not significantly differ among the three PM types, and no significant correlation of PM concentration with the abundance of any potential pathogen was observed. The present study demonstrates that microbial composition in PM inside and outside of pig houses is similar, indicating that most microbe-containing PM inside pig houses leaks to the outside from where it, along with microbe-containing PM on the outside, may re-enter the pig houses. Our results may provide useful insights regarding strategies to mitigate potential risk associated with pig farming PM and pathogens in PM.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the form and components, decoration and locality of pyongnangans(平欄干) in Yangban's Houses(32 Houses) in Gyeongbuk region, The results of this study, which were carried out through both survey and on-site study, are as below. First, Pyongnangans of Gyeongbuk region Yangban's Houses can be classified into 4 different types, which are (1)Mureum type, (2)Gyoran(交欄) type, (3)Mureum-Saldae combination type, (4)Simplified Saldae type. And these 4 types are again subdivided into eight types, depending on differences of both detailed form and framework. Gyoran type are the most common cases in Yangban's Houses of Gyeongbuk region, whose number is followed by the order of Mureum type, Mureum-Saldae combination type and Simplified Saldae type Pyongnangans. Decorative 亞 shaped Gyoran type are more set up in Sarangchaes than in Anchaes, and this was because Decorative Gyorans are more appropriate to show the Social status and class of a patriarch than humble Mureum type. Pyongnangans of Yangban's Houses in Gyeongbuk region have their peculiarities in the exclusion of decorativeity, by consistent use of plain single-layer Pyongnangans. A certain locality is reflected on the types and detailed forms of Pyonnangans. Mureum type are widely found in Gyeoungju region Yangban's Houses, while Gyoran type were more often used in Andong region. In Bonghwa region, Mureum-Saldae combination type are found in large quantities. This was due to the locational chateristics of Sarangchaes in Bonghwa region, which were usually built on steep slopes.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics and types of contemporary houses. This study deals with single-unit Korean houses designed by architects, which are included in architectural periodicals and books published since 1990. This study uses three analysis criteria: general characteristics of the house, hierarchical order of the plan and planning elements of houses. These criteria are derived from preceding studies and typological and topographical theories on houses. As the results of this study, the types of contemporary houses's plan are obtained from the perspective of plan's shape, hierarchical space relationship and spatial organization. Ten types corresponding to the plan shape are proposed. And eleven types of hierarchical space relationship are made and six spatial organization plan types are shown in this paper.
