  • Anaerobic degradation characteristics of dewatered liquid of household food waste including methane conversion efficiency and degradation kinetics were studied in an anaerobic batch reactor of 5 L volume. The ultimate methane production for dewatered liquid of household food waste tested was over 0.31L $CH_4/L{\cdot}dewatered$ liquid of household food waste. The kinetic constant of dewatered liquid of household food waste tested was $0.223d^{-1}/L$. The kinetic behavior of anaerobic degradation was described as a first order series reaction. The determinant of rate-limiting step(DR) that is balanced out from the rates of reaction steps was defined by the logarithmic difference of the maximum acidification rate and the maximum methanation rate. Anaerobic degradation characteristics of organic materials were evaluated by the value of DR. The DR of dewatered liquid of household food waste tested was 1.17.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of household characteristics to family savings. Family savings were defined in four ways such as monthly savings, average propensity to save, financial assets, and net financial assets. The household characteristics dealt with were family income, household size, number of earners, age, occupation, education, housing tenure, and urbanization. The data used in the study was Survey of Family Finance 1990. The main statistical method was multiple regression. Family income was found to the most important variable to determine four family saving variables holding other characteristics constant. Also, household size had significant negative effects on family savings. Two-earner households were found to have higher average propensity to save and less financial assets compared to single-earner households. Fro monthly savings and average propensity to save, the households with forties andfifties household head tended to be less than others, while financial assets tended to increase with the age of household head. Compared to salary earner households, blue-colored households had significantly lower average propensity to save, and the households with professionals had significantly higher financial assets. The college-graduated households tended to have less monthly savings than the elementary-graduated households. Also, the housing renters were found to have more monthly savings and higher average propensity to save, compared to the housing owners.

  • Objectives: This study used secondary data from the 2021 Community Health Survey to identify the impact of dysphagia on mental health-related characteristics among older adults, selecting 73,970 individuals aged 65 years and older. Methods: Frequency analysis, χ2-test, and multiple logistic regression were conducted to identify risk factors affecting mental health-related characteristics among older adults. Results: Dysphagia was most common among individuals with the following demographic characteristics: female, aged 85 years and older, three-generation household and household income in the 1st quintile. Chewing discomfort according to mental health-related characteristics was higher in older adults with cognitive impairment and depression. Sex, age, education level, household income, and chewing discomfort were significant for cognitive impairment, whereas sex, age, household type, education level, household income, and chewing discomfort were significant for depression. Conclusions: The above results confirmed that chewing discomfort contributes to mental health issues such as cognitive impairment and depression. It is therefore necessary to recognize chewing discomfort as an important health problem affecting the mental health of older adults, and to develop a multifaceted dental hygiene approach to target community-dwelling older adults who suffer from chewing discomfort.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify the household financial strategies and find out variables affecting the type of the household financial strategies. The data of 3994 households from Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(1999-2000) were used. The major findings were as follows: (1) the household financial strategies were Residual Saver Type(44.6%), Unformal Institute Saver Type(13.3%), Financial asset Saver Type(16.7%), Real estate Saver Type(13.4%) and Diversities(12.0%). (2) The household financial strategy types were changed rapidly during short term. (3) In 3994 households, the variables which influence on the change of the household financial strategies were education, job, numbers of children, place of residence, home ownership. Similarly, in each type, the change of household financial strategies was significantly different according to the household characteristics variables.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study was to investigate several household characteristics related to panel attrition, examining how they may have conditioned the panel data in the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS). Design/methodology/approach - We studied the cause of the differences in household income between the original panel and the new panel in KOWEPS. Findings - To summarize our findings, whereas it is highly likely that a low-income household or a household without health insurance will remain in the panel, it is highly likely that a high-income household or a household of more than three members will be taken off the panel. Research implications or Originality - The proportion of low-income household tends to decrease over the years, which appears to result from an overall increase in household income. Such changes are reflected in the pattern in which older panels have higher estimates of household income than newer panels.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution persist globally, leading to an increase in extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts. Previous studies have investigated various factors for energy consumption, such as household, residential, economic, and social characteristics. However, the body of research examining energy-saving behavior and perceptions remains limited and underexplored. In particular, significant differences in energy conservation perceptions can be observed among individual household members, even within the same household. To this end, this study explores how household energy consumption is associated with various factors, including household characteristics, housing characteristics, energy-saving behaviors, and seasonal factors. We utilize survey data from the Household Energy Panel, spanning a 24-month period from January 2018 to December 2019, comprising a sample of 5,897 households across 17 cities and provinces nationwide. The findings of this study are expected to offer an empirical evidence for household energy-saving policies.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of household characteristics on household expenditures on wedding, funeral, ancestor worship, and 60th birthday anniversary. Data for this study were from the 1996 Annual Report on the Family Income and Expenditure Survey. OLS regression analysis was used to identify the effect of household characteristics on money spent on family ceremony expenditures. The household income, age of head, education of head, and family size were all significant factors for understanding family ceremony expenditures. The results also indicated that additional income from wife's labor force participation was associated with lesser expenditures on family ceremony, while business income, asset income, and transfer income had no effects on this category. The effect of the third quarter of 1996 was significant on family ceremony expenditures, indication that households spent significantly less for this category in the summer than did in the winter, holding other factors constant.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the perception of financial risks and expenditures for insurance by household characteristics. Data were collected from 598 housewives by online survey on Dec., 2001. Results indicated that respondents had perceived the risk of unemployment most among three types of risks. Household characteristics reflecting financial needs in emergency case had positive effects on the perception of risks, and hence the expenditures for insurance, in general. On the other hand, the level of emergency preparation had negative effects on the perception of risks and the expenditures for insurance. However, only credit-related risk had a positive relationship with the expenditures for insurance.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the characteristics of university education expenditure and how university education expenditure affected household finance such as total household expenditure after excluding education expenditure, savings, and debts respectively. The data were drawn from the 8th Korean Labor & Income Panel Study conducted by the Korean Labor Institute, and 563 households with children attending university were selected. The t-test, F-test (Duncan's multiple range test as post hoc test), OLS, and Heckman's two-step estimation were utilized by SAS 9.1 and SPSS 12.0 for Windows. The results were as follows: First, average annual tuition was found to be 6,170,000won(21.5% of total annual household expenditures) and average annual private education expenses were 4,920,000won(15.9% of total annual household expenditures). Second, the higher the household income levels, the more spent on university education, whereas the higher the household income level, the lower the household expenditure-to-university education ratio. Third, tuition and private education expenses had a negative impact on household expenditures after excluding education expenditure.

  • In this study it was assumed that planning was composed of three activities -resource assessment standard setting information seeking and implementing was composed of money investment and time investment, Two variable groups which were assumed to be related with planning and implementing were household characteristics and housewife's value characteristics. Money investment to children's education was significantly affected by income, net wealth of household instrumental value of eduation and information seeking about private education. The variables assumed to affect time investment to children's education were instrumental value of education information seeking about private education and expected education level.
