Objectives : This study was conducted to examine the relationships between Korean adult's daily hours of sleep, depression, and suicidal thoughts using data from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey. Methods : This study utilized a depression screening tool, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), for the 6,355 participants of the health and mental health survey. T-tests, cross analysis, correlation analysis, and logistic regression analysis were used. Results : The results showed that sufficient hours of sleep decreased depression. The depression score for females (3.19) was significantly higher than for males (2.10; p<.001). The participants in the depression group slept less than 7 hours per day (p<.01). Conclusions : The study results showed a significant correlation between sleep duration and depression when health-related factors and social factors influencing sleep were controlled. The results also indicated that this correlation may vary based on gender. This study implies that further studies are necessary to identify the causal relationship between sleep duration and depression.
Objectives : Insufficient sleep could have harmful effects on mental health. We examined the mental health status of Korean adolescents according to daily sleep time and subjective sleep satisfaction using a nationwide representative sample of Korean adolescents. Methods : Data from the 2016 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey was used. Sleep duration on weekdays and subjective sleep satisfaction during the past week were asked. Participants' perceived health, happiness, stress, depressive mood, and suicidality during past 12 months were also investigated. Participants were classified by mean duration of daily sleep time and the level of sleep satisfaction, and the odds of having mental health problems were compared. Results : Compared to adolescents who slept more than 6 hours per day and satisfied with their sleep, adolescents who slept less than 6 hours per day and/or dissatisfied with their sleep were less likely to perceive themselves healthy and happy. They were also more likely to have severe stress, depressive mood, and suicidality, with highest odds ratios among adolescents with both short and dissatisfying sleep. Conclusions : Given the significant associations between sleep insufficiency and mental health problems, attention to the sleep shortage among Korean adolescents is needed. Prospective studies are warranted to elucidate the causal relationships between subjective and objective sleep insufficiency and psychiatric conditions.

Pilots' fatigue is one of the most serious threat to flying safety. Fatigue is influenced by many factors like sleep deprivation, daily activities, aging, stress, etc. This study was designed to investigate military pilots' daily activities. 20 pilots' daily activity was monitored by activity monitor, Fitbit(R), and the survey about sleep time and flight time was conducted. They placed Fitbit(R) on their waist for 5 days. During flight, they removed Fitbit(R) that had been used for checking their steps and walking distances. It was found that the average sleep time is 6.7 hours for fighter pilots. It was a little shorter than average sleep time for adults, 8 hours. Average steps per day was 6,838 which is more than sedentary worker's but less than active worker's. Their daily activities were not as high as we had expected. But their sleep time was very short. Flight surgeons should recommend them to take a rest and get sleep during rest period.
Objective: To investigate the situation of health-related main factors of Korean middle school adolescents. Methods: Data were collected via a self-reporting questionnaire from 2,254 students (650 boys and 1,604 girls), and their sleeping, exercise, dietary pattern, stress, physical problems, and taking of food supplements were analyzed. Results: Korean middle school students sleep about 7 hours per day, and they exercise less than 4 hours per week. Around 13% of the students skip breakfast nearly every day. 35% of the students were under severe stress, and 38% have reported at least one symptom of physical distresses including gastrointestinal disorders or headaches. 31% of the students took a functional supplement, especially one with vitamins as the most favored one, and ginseng and herbal drugs coming second and third. Conclusion: This result first reports a general feature of health-associated factors in middle school students. This study in the future will be basic information to develop medical supports for adolescents using traditional Korean medicine.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined influence of screen based sedentary behavior and sleep duration on obesity, depression, and suicidal ideation in Korean Adolescents. Methods: This cross sectional study used secondary data from the 2013 Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey. A total of 27,929 high school students were included in the study. Logistic regression was used for analysis of the combined influence of screen based sedentary behavior and sleep duration on obesity, depression, and suicidal ideation. Results: Obesity was more prevalent among adolescents who had ${\geq}$ 4h of screen based sedentary behavior and <7h of sleep duration compared to the reference group, defined as < 2h of screen time and > 7h of sleep duration. Depression and suicidal ideation were more prevalent among adolescents who had 2-4h of screen based sedentary behavior and <7h of sleep duration compared to the reference group. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, maintaining a low (< 2h) level of screen based sedentary behavior and appropriate sleep duration over 7 hours per day is essential for prevention of adolescent obesity, depression, and suicidal ideation.
This descriptive-correlational study was conducted to identify the major factors affecting health promoting behaviors. 344 workers who employed in four different manutacturing plants in Taegu and Kyungbuk area were selected by convenience sampling method. Data were collected from April let to April 18th, 1998 by ready structured questionaires. The purpose of this study was to offer the basic data for health promotion theory development and health promotion strategy planning. This study was based on Pender's Health Promotion Model and examined three variables health promoting behavior, self-concept and perceived importance of health. The Life Style and Health Habit Assessment scale(LHHA) developed by Pender(1982).The Self-concept scale developed by Choi(1972) and the Health Value scale developed by Wallston, Maides and Wallston(1980) were used for this study. Data was analyzed by percentage, mean. t-test. ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The major findings of this study are as follows ; 1. The average level of health promoting behavior practice was 63.2% and possible range was from 62 to 248 point. The mean score of respondent's positive self-concept was 75.8. 81.4% of respondents put a high priority on the importance of health. 2. There was a significant difference between the practice level in the category of general self care and less amount of working hours per day(P=0.000), less amount of working hours per week(P=0.000). There was a significant difference between the practice level in the category of nutrition and age(0.002), marital status(0.000), working hour per day(0.008), working hours per week(0.001), There was a significant difference between the practice level in the category of nutriton and sex(0.000), age(0.000), marital status(0.025), education level(0.000), working hours per day(0.002), working hours per week(0.006). There was a significant difference between the practice level in the category of sleep and rest and age(0.003), marital status(0.002), working hours per day(0.001), working hours per week(0.001). There was a significant difference between the practice level in the category of stress management and working hours per day(0.001), working hours per week(0.002). There was a significant difference between the practice level in the category of self-actualization and working hours per day(0.050). 3. General characteristics influencing the respodent's self-concept were level(P=0.009) and worksite(P=0.001). 4. The results of the hypothesis tests are as follows The first hypothesis, that "The respondent who have more positive self-concept will have higher scores in the practice of health promoting behavior." was supported(r=0.2973, P=0.0001). The second hypothesis that "The respondent who have higher perception level on importance of health will have higher scores in the practice health promoting behavior." was rejected(r=- 0665, P=0.2225). 5. The most important factor that affects health promoting behavior practice was working hours per week(6.0%). The combination of working hours per week, age, education level accounted for 10.0% of the variance in health promoting behavior. In conclusion, the results of this study on industrial workers supported Pender's health promotion model in partial and showed the relatedness between self concept and the practice of health promoting behavior. Further research is required to find factors influencing health promoting behaviors of industrial workers.
Objective: To obtain an overview of the status of health-associated factors of Korean high school adolescents. Methods: 2,455 high school students (1,808 boys and 647 girls) filled out questionnairesfor their health-related factors such as physical problems, sleep and exercise. Results: Students sleep about 5.5 hours per day while they exercise only 2.6 hours each week. 14.2% of students skip breakfast every day. 31.0% of students were under severe stress, and 46.4 % has at least one symptom of distresses such as indigestion, headache, frequently catching cold, or muscle pain. 40.7% of the students took a functional supplement, especially vitamins as the most common, and ginseng and herbal drugs as the second and third. Conclusion: These results present general health-associated status of high school students, thus they could be helpful to design medicinal strategies for high school students using traditional Korean medicine.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of skin pressure by wearing all-in-one on the rhythm of body temperature such as skin and rectal temperature which play a crucial role in the nocturnal rhythm. Five healthy female were participated in the study as subjects. The experimental clothing was an all-in-one, one of the foundation, which is worn for shaping the body. The total experimental periods were 5 days. On the 1st day, subjects did not wear the all-in-one (None), and they wore it for about 12 hours per day from 2nd to 5th day (Wearing1~4). Skin and rectal temperature were measured during the entire experimental days to figure out the rhythm of body temperature during sleep. When subjects wore the all-in-one, the gradients of the forearm and calf skin temperature at the sleep onset were significantly smaller than "None". It indicated that the rise of extremities' skin temperature was low on the "Wearing1~4". The decline of rectal temperature in "Wearing 1~4" was smaller than "None". Therefore, the skin pressure by all-in-one may cause the temperature of extremities' skin and rectum to change, resulting the fluctuation of the circadian rhythm, finally it could have effects on the rhythm of sleep.

PURPOSE: In this study, we tried to find out what kind of exercise was more effective in sleep disorder by comparing melatonin in blood after applying low intensity with high intensity exercise to sleep disordered rats induced by experiment. METHODS: We used male Sprague-Dawley rats which were 8weeks old and weighted 300g. They were supplied with water and food without any restriction. We kept the room temperature at $25^{\circ}C$ and controld the length of day and night in 12 hours blocks, respectively. We divided the rats 60 into 2 groups. To one group we applied low intensity exercise, and to the other we applied high intensity exercise for 15minutes per day over a period of 4 weeks. We extracted the blood from abdominal aorta before, after exercise, moved into EDTA tube, performed centrifugation. We decanted the serum $200{\mu}l$ from the blood into microcentrifuge tube by samples and moved into polypropylene culture tubes with micro pipette. We split enzyme solution $50{\mu}l$ into the tubes with melatonin direct kits and make them react at $37^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. We split assay buffer $50{\mu}l$ into each tube and mixed melatonin tracer $50{\mu}l$ and melatonin antiserum $50{\mu}l$, respectively. After we made them react in room temperature, we decanted the superficial layer with a centrifuge and measured the activity for 1 minute by competitive method with ${\gamma}$-counter equipment. We draw a standard curve through logit-log graph with CPM(counts per minute) and counted the melatonin by B/B0. We conducted independent t-test to examine the homogeneous of melatonin value of before low-intensity and high-intensity exercise. We performed paired t-test to compare before and after low-intensity and high-intensity exercise, respectively. We carried out independent t-test to compare melatonin value after low-intensity and high-intensity exercise. Significance level was .05. RESULTS: The results were as follows; firstly melatonin was more increased in the group who was exposed to high intensity exercise when we compared before to after high and low intensity exercise, respectively. Secondly, high intensity exercise was more effective than low intensity exercise when we compared the two. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, secretion of melatonin which is the material of sleep improvement could be promoted by high intensity exercise. Low intensity exercise acted as a stress rather than improving sleep and had a negative effect on the secretion of melatonin because the melatonin was affected by stress.

The purpose of this study was to recognized the sleep activity patterns of the normal infants in Korea. The subject were 41 normal infants who were below 8 weeks old and were born in Taegu city and Kyungbuk province. The measuring instrument the sleep activity was NCASA translated by the Korean-parent-child Health Academic Association. The data that were collected from April, 18 1999 to January 1, 2000 were analysed by the SPSS 7.5 program. The results of the study was summarized as follow; 1) The mean amount of total sleeping hours per day was decreased from $16.27{\pm}1.96$ hr at the 1st week, to $15.19{\pm}2.39$ hr at the 2nd week, to $13.66{\pm}2.40$ hr at the 3 week but increased to $16.55{\pm}5.77$ hr at the 4-8 week after birth. 2) The mean frequency of feeding was increased to $9.43{\pm}2.79$ times at the 3rd week but decreased to $7.55{\pm}1.23$ times at the 4-8th week after birth. 3) The regularity of day time sleep was decreased from 50.00% to 19.79% and that of night time sleep was increased from 51.79% to 72.92%. 4) The regularity of feeding was increased from 30.42% at the 1st week to 50.07% at the 2nd week but decreased 26.34% at the 4-8th week after birth. 5) The longest period of day time sleep was decreased to $2.39{\pm}0.42$ hr at the 3rd week but increased $2.47{\pm}0.69$ hr at the 4-8th week after birth. The longest period of night time sleep was decreased to $2.58{\pm}0.67$ hr at the 2nd week but increased to $3.00{\pm}1.32$ at the 3rd week and $4.30{\pm}1.16$ hr at the 4-8th week after birth. 6) At the 1st week, the 2nd week, the 3rd week after birth, the frequency of day time feeding was positively correlated with the frequency of night time feeding($R_{1week}=0.948^{**}$, $R_{2week}=0.927^{**}$, $R_{3week}=0.779^{**})$. At the 4-8th week after birth, the frequency of night time feeding was negatively correlated with the amount of night time sleep ($R_{4week-8week}=0.875^{*}$). On the basis of above findings, the following is suggested; It is need a longitudinal and transcultural study which are designed for children's sleep and feeding.
