  • Stainless steel used widely in various fields of industry have the characteristics of difficulty-to-cut. This difficulty comes from its peculiarity, for example work hardening, vibration, etc. And these peculiarity on the cutting process have an effect on tool wear or life shortness of tools. To solve these problems several method have been developed. Hot-machining is one way of these method. when a material is heated, organization of material is soften. So cutting process becomes easy. When such a hot-machining method applies on drilling process and then heated material is processed, cutting force is less than usual drilling process cutting force. In this paper, cutting force is compared heated SUS 304 with usual SUS 304. And shape of chips is also compared.

  • The microstructure of a high-carbon and high-chromium cast steel (HK700) for cold-work die inserts was analyzed by advanced scanning electron microscopy. A continuous network of primary $M_7C_3$ carbide was developed among austenitic matrix after casting. A small amount of $M_2C$ was added to the carbide network owing to the enrichment of Mo and W during the solidification. After quenching in which the austenitization was performed at $1030^{\circ}C$ and double tempering at $520^{\circ}C$, the network structure of $M_7C_3$ was preserved while most of the matrix was transformed to martensite because of additional carbide precipitation. The $M_2C$ in the as-cast microstructure was also transformed to $M_6C$ due to its instability. The continuous network of coarse carbides owing to the absence of hot-working had little influence on the hardness after quenching and tempering, whereas it resulted in severe brittleness upon flexural loading.

  • Dilatometry is a useful technique to obtain experimental data concerning transformation. In this paper, a dilation conversional model was established to calculate carbides fraction in AISI H13 hot-work tool steel based on the measured length changes. After carbides precipitation, the alloy contents in the matrix changed. In the usual models, the content of carbon atoms after precipitation is considered as the only element that affects the lattice constant and the content of the alloy elements such as Cr, Mo, Mn, V are often ignored. In the model introduced in this paper, the alloying elements (Cr, Mo, Mn, V) changes caused by carbides precipitation are incorporated. The carbides were identified using scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The relationship between lattice constant of carbides and temperature are measured by high-temperature X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the carbides observed in all specimens cooled at different rates are V-rich MC and Cr-rich $M_{23}C_6$, and most of them are V-rich MC, only very few are Cr-rich $M_{23}C_6$. The model including the effects of substitutional alloying elements shows a good improvement on carbides fraction predictions. In addition, lower cooling rate advances the carbides precipitation for AISI H13 specimens. The results between experiments and mathematical model agree well.

  • A cold-work tool steel powder is used to fabricate 3-dimensional objects by selective laser melting using a high-pressure gas atomization process. The spherical powder particles form continuous carbide networks among the austenite matrix and its decomposition products. The carbides comprise Nb-rich MC and Mo-rich $M_2C$. In the SLM process, the process parameters such as the laser power (90 W), layer thickness ($25{\mu}m$), and hatch spacing ($80{\mu}m$) are kept fixed, while the scan speed is changed from 50 mm/s to 4000 mm/s. At a low scan speed of 50 mm/s, spherical cavities develop due to over melting, while they are substantially reduced on increasing the speed to 2000 mm/s. The carbide network spacing decreases with increasing speed. At an excessively high speed of 4000 mm/s, long and irregularly shaped cavities are developed due to incomplete melting. The influence of the scan pattern is examined, for which $1{\times}1 mm^2$ blocks constituting a processing layer are irradiated in a random sequence. This island-type pattern exhibits the same effect as that of a low scan speed. Post processing of an object using hot isostatic pressing leads to a great reduction in the porosity but causes coarsening of the microstructure.

  • Two types of advanced cold-work tool steels were characterized and compared. A higher-alloyed ledeburitic steel with primary carbides (denoted as 9Cr) and a lower-alloyed steel without primary carbides (5Cr) were fabricated by vacuum induction melting and subsequent hot forging. They were spheroidizing-annealed at $870^{\circ}C$, quenched at $1030^{\circ}C$ and tempered at 180 or $520^{\circ}C$. Their machinability after annealing and hardness, impact toughness, wear resistance after tempering were compared and interpreted in association with their characteristic microstructures. After annealing, 5Cr showed higher resistance to machining due to higher ductility and toughness in spite of lower strength and smaller carbide volume. Owing to smaller carbide volume fraction and the absence of coarse primary carbides, 5Cr showed even better impact toughness although the hardness was lower. The improved toughness of 5Cr resulted in excellent wear resistance, while smaller volume fraction of retained austenite also contributed to it.

  • Various amount of NbC carbide was intentionally formed in a matrix-type cold-work tool steel by controlled amount of Nb and C addition. And the effect of NbC addition on the mechanical properties was investigated. Four alloys with different Nb and C contents were cast by vacuum induction melting, then hot forging and spheroidizing annealing were conducted. The machinability of the annealed specimens was examined with 3 different cutting tools. And tensile tests at room temperature were conducted. After quenching and tempering, hardness and impact toughness were measured, while wear resistance was evaluated by disk-on-plate type wear test. The increasing amount of NbC addition resulted in degraded machinability with increased strength, whereas the absence of NbC also led to poor machinability due to high toughness. After quenching and tempering, the additional NbC improved wear resistance with increasing hardness, whereas it deteriorated impact toughness. Therefore, it could be found that a moderate addition of NbC was desirable for the balanced combination of mechanical properties.

  • New carbon equivalent equation for the better prediction for the better prediction of roll force in a continuous hot strip mill has been formulated by applying a neural network method. In predicting roll force of steel strip, carbon equivalent equation which normalize the effects of various alloying elements by a carbon equivalent content is very critical for the accurate prediction of roll force. To overcome the complex relationships between alloying elements and operational variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate and so forth, a neural network method which is effective for multi-variable analysis was adopted in the present work as a tool to determine a proper carbon equivalent equation. The application of newly formulated carbon equivalent equation has increased prediction accuracy of roll force significantly and the effectiveness of neural network method is well confirmed in this study.

  • It has been investigated that the ion nitriding effects of a STD61 steel in various time conditions of 3 to 9 hours, and the microstructure of compound and diffusion layers of the ion nitrided specimen for 6 hours and subsequently reheated for 1 hour at various temperatures of $400{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ As the nitriding time increased, the thickness of compound and diffusion layers was increased, but the hardness of surface was not considerably increased (Max Hv=1045 at 9hrs). Some of the nitrogen was denitrided out of the surfac and diffused into the core, and also the oxides ($Fe_3O_4$, $Fe_2O_3$) were formed on the surface of the specimen during reheating. The compound layer was partially decomposed at about $600^{\circ}C$ but the diffusion layer was increased up to $800^{\circ}C$. With increasing reheated temperture, the hardness of the surface was decreased, whereas the hardness depth of diffusion layer (0.25mm) was increased up to $600^{\circ}C$ more than that of ion nitrided (0.18mm). The blend-heat treated STD61 steel by ion nitriding is therefore expected to hold on the characteristics of ion nitriding up to $600^{\circ}C$.

  • This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of various amounts of $CO_2$ and CO gas added to the $50%NH_3-N_2$ based gas atmosphere on microstructure, hardness, chemical analysis and residual stress in the compound and diffusion layer of AISI H13 treated by gaseous nitrocarburising process. The compound layer formed in the surface is composed of mainly ${\varepsilon}-Fe_3$(N,C) and small amount of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ and cementite. The maximum hardness value obtainable from H13 steel is shown to be 1200 Hv and the effecvtive hardening depth increases with increasing CO content from 1% to 4%. In the case of CO content over 4%, however, it decreases with increasing CO content. The composition profiles of nitrogen and carbon are found to be within the ${\varepsilon}$-phase field located above the ${\varepsilon}+{\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase field in the Fe-N-C diagram. It is shown that the maximum value of compressive residual stress of H13 steel treated in atmospheres of $50%NH_3-(2,4)%CO_2-N_2-CO$ gas mixture is $48kg/mm^2$ and the depth to which residual stress is in Compressive state is $90{\mu}m$ for the atmosphere $50%NH_3-45%N_2-4%CO_2-1%CO$ gas mixture. It is consequently important to control the maximum value and size of compressive residual stress region in order to obtain desirable mechanical properties.

  • In this paper, the characteristics analysis of LMD track, such as including track structure, track wear resistance and track thickness, were analyzed to enhance the deposition efficiency using a diode-pumped disk laser. SKD61 hot work steel plate and Fe based AISI M2 alloy were used as a the substrate and powder for the LMD process, respectively. The laser power, track pitch and powder feed rate among LMD parameters were adopted to estimate the deposition efficiency. As the laser power is increased, heat input and melting pool on the substrate is grown also increases, so resulting in the increased LMD track thickness was increased. Through EPMA mapping analysis of the cross-section in the LMD track, it was observed that all the elements are evenly distributed inside. Therefore, the entire hardness in the LMD track is expected to be almost uniform regardless of location. The characteristics of the LMD specimen were excellent compared to the STD11 specimen in terms of the wear track width and the wear rate as well as the coefficient of friction. Especially the wear rate of LMD specimen has been significantly reduced by 60 % or more. From Based on the experimental results, the prediction formula of LMD thickness was calculated by using laser power, track pitch and powder feed rate.
