  • In the current study, we present a new model for predicting width spread of a slab with a dog-bone shaped cross section during rolling in the roughing train of a hot strip mill. The approach is based on the extremum principle for a rigid plastic material and a three dimensional admissible velocity field. The upper bound theorem is used for calculating the width spread of the slab. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with the predictions from 3-D finite element (FE) process simulations.

  • Precision control of the slab is crucial for product quality and production economy in hot strip mills. The current study presents a new model for predicting width spread of a slab with a rectangular cross section during roughing. The model is developed on the basis of the extremum principle for a rigid plastic material and a three dimensional admissible velocity field. This model incorporates the effect of process variables such as the shape factor and the ratio of width to thickness. We compare the results of this model to 3-D finite element (FE) process simulations and also to results from a previous study.

A Study on the Dynamic Setup of a Side Guide to Reduce Bar Camber at the Roughing Train in a Hot Strip Rolling Mill (열간 조압연공정에서 판 캠버 저감을 위한 사이드 가이드 동적설정에 관한 연구)

  • Bar camber is a phenomenon in which a material with a deformation gradient across its width is bent in the right or left direction in the roll gap. This paper proposes a dynamic setup approach for a side guide for reducing bar camber. A bar tracking scheme using a rotary encoder was adopted to fix an operation point for the side guide. The guiding pressure was utilized for measuring the actual width of the bar with camber. Based on the accurate position and width of the bar, the side guide was dynamically set and operated at the actual roughing train in a hot strip rolling mill. The amount of camber was reduced notably when the dynamic setup scheme was installed in the side guide. 78% of the bars tested had a camber in the range of ${\pm}20mm$, which was an improvement of 27% in terms of production yield.

Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis of a Hot Strip Roughing Mill Using an Autoencoder (오토인코더를 이용한 열간 조압연설비 상태모니터링과 진단)

  • Purpose: It is essential for the steel industry to produce steel products without unexpected downtime to reduce costs and produce high quality products. A hot strip rolling mill consists of many mechanical and electrical units. In condition monitoring and diagnosis, various units could fail for unknown reasons. Methods: In this study, we propose an effective method to detect units with abnormal status early to minimize system downtime. The early warning problem with various units was first defined. An autoencoder was modeled to detect abnormal states. An application of the proposed method was also implemented in a simulated field-data analysis. Results: We can compare images of original data and reconstructed images, as well as visually identify differences between original and reconstruction images. We confirmed that normal and abnormal states can be distinguished by reconstruction error of autoencoder. Experimental results show the possibility of prediction due to the increase of reconstruction error from just before equipment failure. Conclusion: In this paper, hot strip roughing mill monitoring method using autoencoder is proposed and experiments are performed to study the benefit of the autoencoder.

Effect of Non-Metallic Inclusions and Hot Rolling Process Parameters on Hydrogen Induced Cracking of Linepipe Steels (라인파이프 강재의 수소유기균열에 미치는 열간압연 공정변수의 영향)

  • AHydrogen induced cracking (HIC) was phenomenologically studied in terms of the effect of nonmetallic inclusions and hot rolling process parameters. By comparing the level of non-metallic inclusions in two different kinds of commercial grade steels having different HIC resistance, the role of non-metallic inclusions in HIC occurrence was investigated. Change in inclusion morphology and distribution during hot rolling was also studied throughout slab, rolling at austenite recrystallization region (roughing mill; RM) and rolling at austenite non-recrystallization region (finish mill; FM). In addition, the contribution of RM and FM parameters to HIC was investigated from the standpoint of change in inclusion morphology during hot rolling processes. As a result, HIC was closely related to the separation of large complex inclusion during hot rolling process. Large complex inclusions originated from the improper Ca treatment, after which equilibrium composition of slag should have resulted in eutectoid composition. By controlling the equilibrium slag composition equivalent to eutectoid one, HIC resistance could be improved due to the reduced size of inclusions. In addition, change in reduction/pass in RM had an effect on HIC resistance of steels while that in FM did not. Increase in the reduction/pass in the latter stage of RM improved HIC resistance of steels by enhancing the void enclosure around inclusions.

CFWC Scheme for Width Control using CCD Measurement System and Fuzzy PID Controller in Hot Strip Mills (CCD 폭 측정 시스템 및 퍼지 PID를 이용한 CFWC 제어기 설계)

  • In this paper, we propose a CFWC (CCD and fuzzy PID based width control) scheme to obtain the desired delivery width margin of a vertical rolling mill in hot strip process. A WMS(width measurement system) is composed of two line scan cameras, an edge detection algorithm, a glitch filter, and so on. A dynamic model of the mill is derived from a gauge meter equation in order to design the fuzzy PID controller. The controller is a self-learning structure to select the PID gains from the error and error rate of the width margin. The effectiveness of the proposed CFWC is verified from simulation results under a width disturbance of the entry in the mill. Using a field test, we show that the performance of the width control is improved by the proposed control scheme.

Constitutive Relation of Alloy Steels at High Temperatures

  • This paper presents a feasibility study whether Shida's constitutive equation being widely used for plain carbon steel in steel manufacturing industry can be extended to alloy steels with a due carbon equivalent model. T,he constitutive relation of the alloy steels (SAE9254, AISI52100 and AISI4140) is measured using hot deformation simulator (GLEEBLE 3500C) at high temperatures ($800^{\circ}C{\~}1000^{\circ}C$) within strain rates of $0.05{\~}40\;s^{-1}$. It has been found the predicted flow stress behavior (constitutive relation) of AISI52100 steel is in agreement with the measured one. On the other hand, the measured flow stress behavior of SAE9254 and AISI4140 steel partly concords with the predicted one when material experiences relatively high strain rate ($10{\~}40\;s^{-1}$) deformation at low temperature ($800^{\circ}C$). It can be deduced that, for AISI52100 steel, Shida's equation with the carbon equivalent model can be applicable directly to the roughing and intermediate finishing stand in hot rolling process for calculating the roll force and torque.

Clustering-based Monitoring and Fault detection in Hot Strip Roughing Mill (군집기반 열간조압연설비 상태모니터링과 진단)

K-means and PAM algorithm with Euclidean and Manhattan distances were performed to detect the abnormal status. In addition, an performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by field data analysis. Results: PAM with Manhattan distance(PAM_ManD) showed better results than K-means algorithm with Euclidean distance(K-means_ED). In addition, we could know from multivariate field data analysis that the system reliability of hot strip rolling mill can be increased by detecting early abnormal status. Conclusion: In this paper, clustering-based monitoring and fault detection algorithm using Manhattan distance is proposed. Experiments are performed to study the benefit of the PAM with Manhattan distance against the K-means with Euclidean distance.

Study of Side Guide to Reduce Top and Tail Camber in Hot Roughing Rolling (열간 조압연에서 선·후단부 캠버를 저감하기 위한 사이드 가이드에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the effects of a side guide on the top and tail camber. The temperature distribution on the surface of an actual hot-rolled bar was measured using a thermal imager. The measured temperatures were incorporated with finite element analysis, and the thermomechanical behavior of the hot bar was examined. The installation location of the side guide, length of the side guide, and gap between the bar and the insides of the side guide were selected as the parameters to be investigated. The results show that it is more effective to install the side guide at the position where the magnitude of the camber is larger. It is noted that a longer side guide is more effective than a shorter one in reducing the camber. It is also found that the camber decreases in proportion with the guiding gap.
