A method for the detection of on-road succeeding vehicles using visual characteristic features like horizontal edges, shadow, symmetry and intensity is proposed. The proposed method uses the prominent horizontal edges along with the shadow under the vehicle to generate an initial estimate of the vehicle-road surface contact. Fast symmetry detection, utilizing the edge pixels, is then performed to detect the presence of vertically symmetric object, possibly vehicle, in the region above the initially estimated vehicle-road surface contact. A window defined by the horizontal and the vertical line obtained from above along with local perspective information provides a narrow region for the final search of the vehicle. A bounding box around the vehicle is extracted from the horizontal edges, symmetry histogram and a proposed squared difference of intensity measure. Experiments have been performed on natural traffic scenes obtained from a camera mounted on the side view mirror of a host vehicle demonstrate good and reliable performance of the proposed method.
For the full color organic electro-luminescent device, essentially, red, green, and blue emissions are required. But red emission is not to reach minimum level of practical use 31[lm/W]. In order to optimize color purity and power consumption requirements, it is important for the materials development efforts to search for improvements in red emission effisiency. In this study, the bis(8-oxyquinolino)zinc II ($Znq_2$) were synthesized successfully from zinc chloride($ZnCl_2$) as a initial material. Then, we fabricated red organic electroluminescent device with a dye(DCJTB)-doped and inserted $Znq_2$ between emission layer and cathode layer for increasing EL efficiency. The hole transfer layer is a N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis-(3-methyl phenyl) -1,1'-diphenyl-4.4'-diamine(TPD), and the host material of emission layer is $Znq_2$. For the inserting of $Znq_2$, efficiency increased.
Background: Small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have had major impacts on anticancer therapy by targeting the catalytic activities of dysregulated tyrosine kinases. TKIs have not presented traditional toxicities; however, some serious adverse effects, including hepatotoxicity, have been documented in clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance. Although TKI-induced hepatotoxicity can cause severe clinical complications in patients, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Methods: Studies on TKI-induced hepatotoxicity were identified by Pubmed search, and relevant articles were reviewed. Results: Immunoallergic reaction, cytochrome P (CYP) 450 polymorphisms, and formation of reactive metabolites are under consideration as mechanisms of TKI-induced hepatotoxicity. Host protein-drug metabolite conjugates are recognized as antigens by class II major histocompatibility complexes and are believed to cause liver injuries. Polymorphisms in CYP, which influences TKI metabolism, can slow TKI metabolism and may induce development of hepatotoxicity. The formation of reactive metabolites during drug metabolism can induce hepatotoxicity by directly causing cytotoxicity, leading to cell dysfunction, and indirect toxicity by mediating secondary immune reactions. Concurrent use of various medications with TKI can also cause hepatotoxicity by affecting drug transporter or enzyme activities. Conclusion: Periodic monitoring of patients taking TKIs and risk/benefit reassessments though post marketing surveillance are necessary to prevent hepatotoxicity.
In order to search new phosphors for plasma display panel(PDP), phosphate hosts which has a host excitation band at around 150nm were prepared and their luminescent properties were investigated. In the preparation of $YPO_4: Eu\; and\; (Y,Gd)PO_4: Eu$ phosphors, the effect of oxide and oxalate starting materials on prepared phosphors were compared in terms of relative emission intensities and particle characteristics. The results showed that oxalate starting materials gave better performance in emission intensities and smaller size and more round shape phosphors which would be more applicable for high resolution display. Additionally, Gd, V, Nb and Ta ions were doped to $YPO_4:Eu$ and the luminescent properties of the resulant solid solutions were investigated to find efficient sensitizer. Among these ions, Gd, V and Nb ions increased the emission intensities of parent phosphor to around 10%. While Nb ion gave the best result in emission intensities, CIE color coordinate were improved by doping V ion into $YPO_4:Eu$ phosphor to give x=0.6523, y=0.3406 compared to commercial sample.
The frustrated magnet has been regarded as a system that could be a promising host material for the quantum spin liquid (QSL). However, it is difficult to determine the spin configuration and the corresponding mechanism in this system, because of its geometrical frustration (i.e., crystal structure and symmetry). Herein, we systematically investigate one of the geometrically frustrated magnets, the $TbB_4$ compound. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), we explored its spin configuration, as well as Tb's quadrupole. Comprehensive evaluations of the temperature and photon energy/polarization dependences of the RSXS signals reveal the mechanism of spin reorientation upon cooling down, which is the sophisticated interplay between the Tb spin and the crystal symmetry rather than its orbit (quadrupole). Our results and their implications would further shed a light on the search for possible realization of QSL.

Loranthus tanakae Fr. et Sav. (Loranthaceae) is a species of mistletoe, a semiparasitic plant growing on the branches of Quercus and Betula species as host trees. In our ongoing search for bioactive compounds from endemic species in Korea, we have investigated to isolate the chemical constituents responsible for the antitumor effect of the MeOH extract of L. tanakae. The ethyl acetate soluble part of the MeOH extract demonstrated a marginal inhibition on the proliferation of the tumor cell lines such as A549 (non small cell lung), SK-OV-3 (ovary), SK-MEL-2 (melanoma), XF498 (central nerve system), and HCT-15 (colon) in vitro. Thus, the activity-guided isolation procedure upon the ethyl acetate soluble part of the extract has been carried out and finally four flavonoid rhamnopyranosides (1-4) were isolated as active principle. The structures of 1-4 were elucidated by the physicochemical and spectral data as rhamnetin 3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnoside (1), quercetin 3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnoside (2), rhamnocitrin 3-O-$\alpha$rhamnoside (3), and kaempferol 3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnoside (4).

The current social demand for organic, sustainable, and eco-friendly approaches for farming, while ensuring the health and productivity of crops is increasing rapidly. Biocontrol agents are applied to crops to ensure biological control of plant pathogens. Research on the biological control of white root rot disease caused by a soil-borne pathogen, Rosellinia necatrix, is limited in pears compared to that in apple and avocado. This pathogenic fungus has an extensive host range, and symptoms of this disease include rotting of roots, yellowing and falling of leaves, wilting, and finally tree death. The severity of the disease caused by R. necatrix, makes it the most harmful fungal pathogen infecting the economical fruit tree species, such as pears, and is one of the main limiting factors in pear farming, with devastating effects on plant health and yield. In addition to agronomic and cultural practices, growers use chemical treatments to control the disease. However, rising public concern about environmental pollution and harmful effects of chemicals in humans and animals has facilitated the search for novel and environmentally friendly disease control methods. This review will briefly summarize the current status of biocontrol agents, ecofriendly methods, and possible approaches to control disease in pear orchards.
Blue straggler stars (BSs) are "rejuvenated" main sequence stars first recognized by Allan Sandage from his observation of the prominent northern globular cluster M3 in the year of 1953. BSs are now known to be present in diverse stellar environments including open clusters, globular clusters, dwarf galaxies, and even the field populations of the Milky Way. This makes them a very useful tool in a wide range of astrophysical applications: Particularly BSs are considered to have a crucial role in the evolution of stellar clusters because they affect on the dynamics, the binary population, and the history of the stellar evolution of the cluster they belong to. Here we report a part of the preliminary results from our ongoing research on the BSs in the two metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), Hodge 11 and NGC1466. Using the high precision multi-band images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Survey (ACS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we extract time-series photometry to search for the signal of periodic variations in the luminosity of the BSs. Our preliminary results confirm that several BSs are intrinsic "short period (0.05 < P < 0.25 days)" variable stars with either pulsating or eclipsing types. We will discuss our investigation on the properties of those variable BS candidates in the context of the formation channels of these exotic main sequence stars, and their roles in the dynamical evolution of the host star clusters.
