  • For the elderly with declining sensory due to aging, various sense stimulation factors provided in indoor environment is desirable healing environment. This study aims to propose the direction of sensory healing environment by adapting the richness of natural environment in indoor place based on the biophilic design theory with implementation method of sensory richness environment. The healing environment was limited to the ward in the beginning, but it has widened its range to the whole place, and the lobby is considered quiet important to healing. Therefore, this study selected lobby space of geriatric hospital as study subject. As for the study method, we deducted the analytic matrix focusing on the property and elements of the direct and indirect experience of nature appearing in the biophilic design theory, and analyzed the field investigation of subject space. Also, this study paid attention to point where the hotel lobby leads the change of emotional environment, and conducted analysis and comparison by deciding this is what the hotel and geriatric hospital should direct to. As the result, the biophilic design factor of hotel is actively expressed by complex direction of various factors, but as for the geriatric hospital, it was rather passive and simple in expression. The adaptation ratio between hotel and geriatric hospital was almost more than twice times difference in average.

  • This study aims at analyzing the therapeutic design characteristics implemented in the indoor atriums of the outpatient areas in four children's hospitals in London and San Francisco. A mixed-method approach was used to examine the spatial configurations and design elements in the atriums, while a literature review was conducted to understand the therapeutic design characteristics relevant to atrium spaces and children's healthcare facilities. The spatial design and the pattern of use of the atrium in each hospital were studied during field visits and interviews with the hospital management staff. Based on the literature review and the observations from the field study, a Visibility Graphic Analysis was chosen to examine the visibility, accessibility, and intelligibility of the spatial configurations in the atriums of each hospital. In addition, the openness, restfulness, and vibrant ambience of the design elements in the atriums of each hospital were investigated by surveying fifty-two design professionals on the quality of the design elements in the atriums. A spatial configuration analysis, confirmed that all the atrium spaces had high visibility, accessibility, and intelligibility due to their high connectivity, integration, intelligibility, and because the atriums were laid out in the open lobby space, along the major circulation axis, or in the circulation intersection. In the survey of the design element evaluation, all atriums proved to be appropriate in terms of openness, while the adequacy of restfulness and vibrant ambience differed depending on the hospitals. Notably, location and orientation, access, natural light, outdoor view, and play facilities were found significant environmental design elements determining the successful implementation of the therapeutic design in the atriums. The observations from the aforementioned are further discussed to enhance the therapeutic design quality of atrium spaces in children's hospitals.

  • Purpose: This study compares and analyzes the design drawing changes that occur during the design process between hospital design competition and the final detailed design. Based on this, factors that can reduce the rate of changes in drawings are derived. The purpose is to provide basic data to lessen the rate of the changes in the process of architecture design and can be reflected in the design competition guidelines. Methods: In this study, cases of hospitals are selected which are built in 5 recent years. Then compare and analyze the drawings which was drawn in the process from submission of competition to final design. After investigating the design changes that occur after the design competition, analyze the fixed-elements which are the main causes of design changes. Fixed-elements can be narrow down into few architecture-factors such as vertical-core, shafts, public-corridor, HAVC, and mechanical/electrical spaces. Results: Result of the rate of changes in each selected hospital floors can be sorted into variable-elements and fixed-elements which tells that the higher the rate of changes of the fixed-elements, the higher the rate of changes of the variable-elements. Implications: In other words, it can be said as the lower the change rates of the fixed-element, lower changes in whole design changes which represents that the greater the efficiency can be shown in the design process.

  • Purpose: The life span of a hospital building is short. This is because the building will have to be built up due to the fact that it can not cope with the new medical environment, it can not be replaced due to low floor height, lack of land. The purpose of the hospital building master plan is to find a way to fulfill its role in the long term. Methods: Comparison the proposals submitted by the master plan and the proposals submitted by the hospitals, the case of three hospitals that have established a master plan for the past three years. In addition, interviews with the designers who participated in the design competition and the administrator of hospital about the variables that occurred during the business process. Results: The result of this study can be summarized into four points. The first one is that master plan is changed by administrator of hospital so that Thy need to understand about the role of master plan. And next is to protect reduction of the project cost. Third, continuous participation of master plan researchers in following projects is good to communicate with administrator and designer. The last one is empathy of master plan by designer and users. Implications: It is necessary to reduce changing of master plan in design process for sustainable managing of hospital.

  • Purpose: Evidence-based design is the process of making design decisions based on reliable research to achieve the best results, so it is important to accumulate reliable evidence through research. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to present new evidence by applying the evidence-based design process to improve the digital signage for each room spaces in hospitals and verifying its effectiveness. Method: Through the 8-step process of evidence-based design, improved digital signage for each room spaces are installed. It conducted surveys and statistical analysis to prove hypotheses by linking design and research. Results: The hypotheses established in the study are: 1) improvement in the readability of digital signage is correlated with patient satisfaction; 2) Improving the intuitiveness of digital signage correlates with patient satisfaction; 3) Improving the sufficiency of digital signage correlates with patient satisfaction. As a result of satisfaction analysis and correlation analysis, all of the above hypotheses were proven. Implications: Although the hospital sign system is the element that patients rely on most intuitively in the long journey of reception, waiting, examination, and treatment, there is insufficient evidence to refer to or apply it when designing. It is necessary to expand future research to expand the evidence that can be applied to hospital sign design.
