Comparison of Vertical and Horizontal Eye Movement Times in the Selection of Visual Targets by an Eye Input Device

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate how well eye movement times in visual target selection tasks by an eye input device follows the typical Fitts' Law and to compare vertical and horizontal eye movement times. Background: Typically manual pointing provides excellent fit to the Fitts' Law model. However, when an eye input device is used for the visual target selection tasks, there were some debates on whether the eye movement times in can be described by the Fitts' Law. More empirical studies should be added to resolve these debates. This study is an empirical study for resolving this debate. On the other hand, many researchers reported the direction of movement in typical manual pointing has some effects on the movement times. The other question in this study is whether the direction of eye movement also affects the eye movement times. Method: A cursor movement times in visual target selection tasks by both input devices were collected. The layout of visual targets was set up by two types. Cursor starting position for vertical movement times were in the top of the monitor and visual targets were located in the bottom, while cursor starting positions for horizontal movement times were in the right of the monitor and visual targets were located in the left. Results: Although eye movement time was described by the Fitts' Law, the error rate was high and correlation was relatively low ($R^2=0.80$ for horizontal movements and $R^2=0.66$ for vertical movements), compared to those of manual movement. According to the movement direction, manual movement times were not significantly different, but eye movement times were significantly different. Conclusion: Eye movement times in the selection of visual targets by an eye-gaze input device could be described and predicted by the Fitts' Law. Eye movement times were significantly different according to the direction of eye movement. Application: The results of this study might help to understand eye movement times in visual target selection tasks by the eye input devices.

  • In this paper, peak velocity characteristics of saccadic eye movements were measured and analyzed as a velocity characteristics of horizontal saccadic eye movement system. Measurements were made with an infrared reflection method, and horizontal saccadic eye movements of 5 normal subject were recorded for the periodic and random pulse targets of 5$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$ , and 30$^{\circ}$ amplitudes.

안구의 운동방향이 다른 컴퓨터 게임 후 폭주근점과 융합여력의 변화 (The Change of Near Point of Convergence and Fusional Reserves after Computer Gaming with Different Direction of Eye Movement)

  • 목적: 본 연구에서는 안구의 운동방향이 다른 컴퓨터 게임을 일정시간 동안 수행하였을 때 폭주근점 및 융합여력의 변화에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 안질환, 안과적 수술 및 조절기능의 이상이 없고 교정시력이 1.0 이상인 20대 40명을 대상으로 40분, 90분 동안 안구를 수평방향 및 수직방향으로 움직여야 하는 게임을 각각 실시하게 한 후 수평 및 수직 융합여력 및 폭주근점 값을 측정하였다. 결과: 수평 및 수직방향의 컴퓨터 게임 후 폭주 근점은 게임 전의 검사 값과 비교하여 멀어지는 경향을 보였으며, 수평 및 수직 융합여력은 모두 유의성 있게 감소하였다. 그러나 90분 동안 연속적으로 컴퓨터 게임을 하였을 때에는 융합여력 및 폭주근점의 감소폭이 40분 동안 작업을 수행하였을 경우보다 작았다. 안구의 주 운동방향에 따른 양안시 기능의 변화는 수직방향으로 고정된 운동보다 수평방향에서의 운동에 의해 더 크게 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 결론: 본 연구에서는 video display terminal(VDT) 작업시 안구의 주 운동방향에 따라 융합여력 및 폭주근점의 변화가 다르게 나타남을 밝혔다. 따라서 지속된 VDT 작업에 따른 양안시 기능의 저하를 방지하기 위하여서는 주로 사용하게 되는 외안근에 따라 작업시간의 조정이 다르게 요구됨을 알 수 있었다.

컴퓨터 게임 시 안구운동의 방향에 따른 조절기능의 변화 (The Change of Accommodative Function by the Direction of Eye Movements During Computer Game)

  • 목적: 본 연구에서는 개인용 컴퓨터로 일정 시간동안 연속적으로 게임을 할 때 안구의 주 운동방향이 조절과 관련된 시기능에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 안질환 및 조절기능의 이상이 없고 교정시력이 1.0이상이 되는 20대 60명을 대상으로 40분 및 90분 동안 연속적으로 수평방향의 게임과 수직방향의 게임을 각각 시행하도록 한 후 조절력, 조절용이성, 상대조절 및 조절래그 값을 측정하였다. 동일 시간동안 게임을 시행하지 않았을 때를 대조군으로 하여 시기능 값을 비교, 분석하였다. 결과: 게임을 하지 않은 대조군의 조절관련 시기능 검사 값에 비하여 40분 동안의 컴퓨터 게임 후 최대조절력, 조절용이성, 조절래그 및 상대조절은 모두 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, 상대조절을 제외하고는 90분으로 컴퓨터 작업시간을 연장하였을 경우 더욱 감소된 값을 나타내었다. 양성상대조절은 90분 동안의 컴퓨터 게임 후 약간 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 한편, 컴퓨터 게임 시 안구의 주 운동 방향에 따른 시기능의 변화는 수직방향으로의 안구운동보다는 주로 수평방향으로의 운동에 의한 조절기능의 감소가 큼을 알 수 있었다. 결론: 컴퓨터 게임을 통한 VDT 작업의 시간이 길어짐에 따라 전반적인 조절기능의 능력이 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, 수직방향보다는 수평방향으로의 안구이동이 VDT 작업 시 조절기능의 변화에 크게 영향을 주므로 VDT 작업 시 수평방향으로의 잦은 안구이동은 안정피로의 주 원인이 될 것으로 생각할 수 있었다.

  • ■ Objectives The purpose of this case report is to show the effect of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) on a patient with horizontal eye movement disorder due to Foville syndrome. ■ Methods A patient with horizontal eye movement disorder as Foville syndrome was treated with herbal medication, acupuncture, electro-acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Then we evaluated the improvement with mobility impairment, length of movement and House-Brackmann scale before and after treatment ■ Results Improvements of mobility impairment, distance at left gaze and House-Brackmann scale were observed after the TKM treatment. ■ Conclusion This case report shows the effect of TKM treatment on horizontal eye movement disorder due to Foville syndrome.

공포 영화 장면 노출 후 수평적 안구 운동이 심박수 변이도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Horizontal Eye Movements on the Heart Rate Variability after Exposure to a Fear-Inducing Film Clip)

  • Objectives : There has been a continued debate regarding the role of eye movements in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing(EMDR). This study examined the possible autonomic effect of horizontal eye movements after being exposed to fearful stimuli. Methods : Fifty two healthy adult women were randomly allocated to eye movement or eye fixed groups after watching a five minute fear-inducing film clip. ECG was recorded during the resting state, after watching the clip, and the treatment. A spectral power analysis of the heart rate variability was performed. As the variables violated the rule of normal distribution and the number in each group is small the non-parametric test was used. Results : Overall, we did not find the differences between the groups in both time and frequency domains. Some minor differences found were not consistent with results from previous studies. Conclusions : Effect of eye movement on autonomic nervous system during fear desensitization was not supported in this experiment. Further study with other psychophysiological measures is needed to understand the role of eye movements in treatment of traumatic memory.

EOG를 이용한 포인팅 디바이스의 개발 (Development of the Pointing Device using EOG)

  • In this paper, a new method for controlling the pointing device using EOG(electrooculogram) signal generated from eye movement was suggested. The basic idea of the method is to control the direction of pointer, as using the results of measuring each component of the horizontal EOG and the vertical EOG by angle of eye-gaze. As a practical example, pointing device controlling the personal computer's pointer is manufactured. The designed pointing device consists of pre-amplifier, A/D converter, serial transmission device and PC program. That is, first, the EOG is amplified by pre-amplifier. Secondly, the amplified EOG is digitized and transmitted to personal computer by PIC16C74A. Finally, the software for controlling the pointer on personal computer is programed. As the result, the measured horizontal EOG and vertical EOG by eye-gaze angle had high linearity; the correlation coefficients of the regression line were 0.998 and 0.996 respectively. And the developed pointing device is able to control the personal computer's pointer, and the average of the errors between the objective value and the observed value had 3.77% for horizontal axis and 5.85% for vertical axis. The pointing device developed in this study is able to control personal computer's pointer by subject's eye movement, that is, the user's intention. Furthermore, the algorithm of this study is applicable for many field, such as a new method remote control, a new wheelchair control and so forth.

The Effects of Horizontal Eye Movement on Mental Health Indices and Psychophysiological Activities in Healthy Subjects

  • Objectives The eye movement (EM) has been reported to play a role in enhancing the retrieval of episodic memories and reducing effects of fearful episodes in the past and worries for the futures. However, it is still unclear in the mechanism of EM in normal subjects. We examined the horizontal eye movement (HEM) effect using an aiding apparatus on mental health indices including negative and positive psychological factors, and psychophysiological measures such as heart rate variability and quantitative electroencepaholography (qEEG) in healthy subjects. Methods Twenty eight healthy subjects were recruited and randomly allocated into two groups : active HEM group and control group. The active HEM group conducted the HEM training with usual stress management audio-intervention using the apparatus inducing eye movement once a day for 14 days. The control group also conducted the same training once a day for 14 days, however, the saccadic eye movement was not included in this training. Psychological measurements, neurocognitive function tests, heart rate variability measurement and qEEG were conducted before and after the training in both groups. Results In the active HEM group, sleep status using Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) positive factors significantly increased after the training. By contrast, scores on the negative items of Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS), and negative items of the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) were significantly decreased after the training. The percentage of delta amplitude (1-3 Hz) in qEEG significantly decreased after the HEM training. The percentage of alpha amplitude (8-12 Hz) significantly increased after HEM training. The change of delta amplitude in the active HEM group was positively correlated with the change of sleep satisfaction of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the change of alpha amplitude was negatively correlated with depression of VAS, anxiety of VAS and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Conclusions The HEM training improved sleep quality and well-being, and sense of optimism. The HEM training also increased alpha amplitude and decreased delta amplitude in qEEG. The qEEG changes were well correlated with subjective improvement of mental health indices in healthy subjects. These results suggest some evidences that HEM training using the apparatus that induces EM would be helpful in improving subjective mental health in healthy subjects. Further study with larger samples size would be needed.

  • 영상 안진기(VOG, Videooculograph)는 전정 안반사의 객관적 평가 방법으로 이용되고 있는 안구 운동 측정 방법 중의 하나이다. 영상 안진기의 핵심 기술은 눈꺼풀이나 속눈셉, 각막 반사, 그리고 눈 깜박임과 같은 영향에 덜 민감하면서 동공의 중점과 회전 운동을 정확하게 찾는 것이다. 회전 운동의 측정에 있어 부정확한 동공의 중점은 부정확한 회전 운동 측정으로 이어지므로 3차원 영상 안진기에서는 중점의 정확한 추정이 매우 중요하다. 이를 위해 잡음에 영향을 적게 받는 동공 중점을 찾는 새로운 알고리즘을 제안하고 알고리즘의 성능에 영향을 주는 인자에 대해 분석하여 최적의 조건을 찾았다. 그리고 제안한 방법을 이용하여 안구의 수평, 수직, 회전 운동, 그리고 동공의 크기 변화를 측정할 수 있는 실시간 3차원 VOG 시스템을 구현하였다.

  • Variation of viewing position of the observer is one of factors of image distortion in the stereoscopic display. A rotation movement of the observer makes the stereoscopic image distortion and that is caused by different horizontal position of each eye of the observer. It is different from horizontal and depth directional movement of the observer. In this paper, we showed the numerical simulation result about the distortion analysis and the correction of the stereoscopic image in rotation movement of the observer.
