  • A digital hologram, which is one of the next generation visual systems, can be generated and displayed in various formats, and a digital hologram is created in accordance with the characteristics of the system for display. Diffraction efficiency can be used as a measure of the characteristics of digital holograms generaged under various conditions in various display environments. In this paper, diffraction efficiency for computer-generated hologram (CGH) under various conditions was measured. This paper discusses the generation conditions that should be considered in hologram display. We compared each condition by measuring the intensity of the first order diffraction pattern of the fringe generated under the Fresnel condition for the phase hologram. Through this paper, we showed the tend about characteristics of the diffraction efficiency according to object point, reconstruction distance, laser and SLM.

  • Parallel femtosecond laser processing using a computer-generated hologram (CGH) displayed on a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM) is demonstrated. The use of the LCSLM enables to perform an arbitrary and variable patterning. This holographic femtosecond laser processing has advantages of high throughput and high light-use efficiency. A critical issue is to precisely control the intensities of the diffraction peaks of the CGH. We demonstrate some methods for the control of the diffraction peaks. We also demonstrate the laser processing with two-dimensional and three-dimensional parallelism.

  • A method is described to produce off-axis hologram lenses without astigmatism for semiconductor lasers. We fabricated a holographic collimating lens by using dichromated gelatin film with high diffraction efficiency and without astigmatism which makes a collimated off-axis beam of semiconductor laser. We have designed the holographic collimating lens by applying the classical ray-tracing method to holographic diffraction. The elimination of astigmatism is obtained by choosing appropriate angles of recording and reconstruction beams. The hologram is recorded by use of Ar^{+}$ laser (488nm wavelength) and reconstructed by semiconductor laser(670nm wavelength). The physical parameters of recording and reconstruction angles, wavelength, and astigmatism are analytically calculated and experimentally confirmed.

  • Parabolic almninium mlITOr of m.5('||'&'||'cent; 50 nun) was fabncated by a diamond tummg machine. Computer generated hologram (CGH) for the test of parabolic mirror was encoded by binary phase hologram Approximation of curved fringe to line was made by staircase encoding. After fringe data 1ransformed mto a Post Scnpt file. magnified master CGH was printed by a laser printer, and then it reduced to the photographIc film. Parabolic mirror was tested by Twyman-Green interferometer with CGH at VIewing arm. Its experimental result was compared with those of surface profile and auto-collimatIon test, and then the errors were analyzed.

  • Laser scanning system using a hologram is simpler in optical system, lower in cost than using a polygon. In this paper, a thick hologram is fabricated for the underfilled transmission disk type with a merit of wabble insensitivity to vibration. High diffraction efficiency over 50% is obtained using silver halide recording material. The two-dimensional scan pattern with 13 scan-line is made by 7-facet hologon and mirror system. This system can be practically applied to POS(Point of Sale) bar-code symbol reader.

  • In this thesis, Lohmann's algorithm and FFT (fast Fourier transform) are used to synthesize binary-phase holograms. FFT computing is carried out for the calculation of complex wavefronts of $128{\times}128$ sampling points of an object that is numerically specified. Then using the Lohmann's algorithm, the amplitude and the phase of complex wavefronts are encoded in binary holograms on each sampling points. PC (personal computer) and laser printer are used to plot binary-phase holograms and CGH (computer generated holograms) films are obtained from this plot by photographic reduction. Holographic images of numerically specified objects are reconstructed from the He-Ne laser and the inverse Fourier optics system. We estimate the quality of holographic images according to the sampling number, application of random phase, amplitude clipping and bleaching the CGH film. We derive optimized conditions to reconstruct better holographic images and to reduce the speckle noise. FFT and Lohmann's algorithm are implemented with MS Visual BASIC 6.0 for the programming of binary-phase hologram.

  • The noncontact optical sensor using the hologram laser and automatic power controller is developed to measure a thickness of transparent objects and achieve excellent performance. Due to the contact between the tip of the sensor and the surface of objects, the tip is abraded. In addition the casting glass under high temperature results in extending the size of sensor body. The accuracy of the sensor is degraded due to these reasons. In this paper, to overcome these problems, we proposed a low cost non-contact optical sensor that is composed of a hologram laser unit used for optical pickup of CD player and a plastic lens. Therefore the problems caused by the contact sensor are solved by using the noncontact sensor. The noncontact sensor has to move toward the objects and obtain the focus error signal to measure a position of transparent objects. While the internal temperature of the sensor is controlled under ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}$, many trials shows ${\pm}2{\mu}m$ measurement error as excellent performance.

  • A computer-generated hologram(CGH) is made for three-dimensional image reconstruction of a virtual object which is a difficult to irradiate the laser light directly. One of the adverse effect factors is quantization of wave front computed by program when a computer-generated hologram is made. Amplitude element is not considered in Kinoform, it needs processing to reduce noise or false image. So several investigation was reported that the improvement of reconstructed image of Kinoform. Means to calculate the most suitable complex amplitude distribution are iterative algorithm, simulated annealing algorithm and genetic Algorithm. Error diffusion method reconstructed to separate the object as for the noise that originated in the quantization error. So it is efficient method to obtain high quality image with not many processing.

  • The 3rd generation optical pick-up used popularly in resent years is composed of many optical and electronic components such as laser diode, photo diode, beam splitter, objective lens, grating lens, concave lens, collimator lens etc. Therefore, the design of its optical system and its main base which the said optical and electronic components are set on, is complicated and needs high precision. Its assembly and adjustment in the production line is also difficult. This complication and the demand of high precision get its production cost to be high and its reliability to be low. In this paper, the 4th generation optical pick-up is designed and developed, with the hologram device which laser diode. photo diode, beam splitter. and grating lens are integrated in. This optical pick-up reduces the number of points of adjustment by 3, compared with the 3rd generation optical pick-up of which the number of points of adjustment is 6. This optical pickup also decreases by 4 the number of points of W bonding to have bad influence on environmental reliability, decreases by about 10 the number of parts, and establishes about 20% cost-down of material cost, compared with the 3rd generation optical pick-up.

  • A direct laser lithography system is widely used to fabricate various types of DOEs (Diffractive Optical Elements) including lenses made as CGH (Computer Generated Hologram). However, a parametric study that uniformly and precisely fabricates the diffractive patterns on a large area (up to $200mm{\times}200mm$) has not yet been reported. In this paper, four parameters (Focal Position Error, Intensity Variation of the Lithographic Beam, Patterning Speed, and Etching Time) were considered for stabilization of the direct laser lithography system, and the experimental results were presented.
