  • Centrifugal casting is suitable for producing hollow-products using centrifugal force. Bush type metal bearings are the key parts that facilitate the rotational movement of various machinery. Metal bearings produced by conventional centrifugal casting machines show rotational imbalance. Therefore, after injecting a large amount of material, the product's precision is secured in the secondary processing. Rotational imbalance is caused by the force acting on the rotary disc plate. In order to minimize rotational imbalance, NASTRAN was used for the optimal design and structural analysis. It was concluded that the rotating plate of the conventional centrifugal casting machine should be prevented from tilting. For this purpose, the location & thickness of the stiffeners were obtained through the optimum design. In the conventional centrifugal casting machine, both ends of the product are lower in temperature than the center part, so internal stress occurs. This solves this problem by inserting a heating coil into the rotating plate.

  • Semi-rigid connections with blind bolts could solve the difficulty that traditional high strength bolts were unavailable to splice a steel/composite beam to a closed section column. However, insufficient investigations have focused on the performance of semi-rigid connection to square concrete filled double-skin steel tubular (CFDST) columns. In this paper, a component model was developed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of semi-rigid composite connections to CFDST columns considering the stiffness and strength of column face in compression and column web in shear which were determined by the load transfer mechanism and superstition method. Then, experimental investigations on blind bolted composite joints to square CFDST columns were conducted to validate the accuracy of the component model. Dominant failure modes of the connections were analyzed and this type of joint behaved semi-rigid manner. More importantly, strain responses of CFDST column web and tubes verified that stiffness and strength of column face in compression and column web in shear significantly affected the connection mechanical behavior owing to the hollow part of the cross-section for CFDST column. The experimental and analytical results showed that the CFDST column to steel-concrete composite beam semi-rigid joints could be employed for the assembled structures in high intensity seismic regions.

  • The suction method is the substructure installation using the water pressure difference generated by discharging water inside the pile by the pumping operation, after the intrusion by the self-weights of a large hollow steel pipe or a concrete structure. It is known as the low-noise and low-vibration method against the general pile driven method and eco-friendly, also. Most current design and safety assessment of the support structure and considering only the static load, however, the importance of dynamic behavior becomes magnified as the size of wind power generator increases. This study measures the natural frequency of the suction pile prototype about the penetration depth as a part of basic research and analyzed the interaction between the soil and the structure.

  • Concrete-filled-steel-tubular (CFST) columns have been well proven to improve effectively the strength, stiffness and ductility of concrete members. However, the central part of concrete in CFST columns is not fully utilised under uni-axial compression, bending and torsion. It has small contribution to both flexural and torsion strength, while it can be replaced effectively by steel with smaller area to give similar load-carrying capacity. Also, the confining pressure in CFST columns builds up slowly because the initial elastic dilation of concrete is small before micro-crackings of concrete are developed. From these observations, it is convinced that the central concrete can be effectively replaced by another hollow steel tube with smaller area to form double-skinned concrete-filled-steel-tubular (CFDST) columns. In this study, a series of uni-axial compression tests were carried out on CFDST and CFST columns with and without external steel rings. From the test results, it was observed that on average that the stiffness and elastic strength of CFDST columns are about 25.8% and 33.4% respectively larger than CFST columns with similar equivalent area. The averaged axial load-carrying capacity of CFDST columns is 7.8% higher than CFST columns. Lastly, a theoretical model that takes into account the confining effects of steel tube and external rings for predicting the uni-axial load-carrying capacity of CFDST columns is developed.

  • The study is part of an experimental program on full-scale Un-Reinforced Masonry (URM) wall panels strengthened with Textile reinforced mortars (TRM). Eight brick walls (two with and five without central opening), were tested under the diagonal tension (shear) test method in order to investigate the strengthening system effectiveness on the in-plane behaviour of the walls. All the URM panels consist of the innovative components, named "Orthoblock K300 bricks" with vertical holes and a thin layer mortar. Both of them have great capacity and easy application and can be constructed much more rapidly than the traditional bricks and mortars, increasing productivity, as well as the compressive strength of the masonry walls. Several parameters pertaining to the in-plane shear behaviour of the retrofitted panels were investigated, including shear capacity, failure modes, the number of layers of the external TRM jacket, and the existence of the central opening of the wall. For both the control and retrofitted panels, the experimental shear capacity and failure mode were compared with the predictions of existing prediction models (ACI 2013, TA 2000, Triantafillou 1998, Triantafillou 2016, CNR 2018, CNR 2013, Eurocode 6, Eurocode 8, Thomoglou et al. 2020). The experimental work allowed an evaluation of the shear performance in the case of the bidirectional textile (TRM) system applied on the URM walls. The results have shown that some analytical models present a better accuracy in predicting the shear resistance of all the strengthened masonry walls with TRM systems which can be used in design guidelines for reliable predictions.

  • A pipe is a hollow, long-form part that is primarily used to transport fluids, such as liquids or gases. Pipes are used in a range of applications in different fields from mechanical purposes to architecture and electrical uses. Despite the significance owing to various usability of pipes, few studies have been conducted using the physical property test method. The tensile test is widely used as a method to check the physical properties of the pipe. The existing pipe tension test contains the possibility to cause errors, which are fractures outside the gauge distance and cross-sectional deformation of the pipe. In this study, a novel pipe tension test method using a jig is presented and pipes with various materials are tested. It is expected that the proposed method can reduce errors that occur in conventional pipes and also obtain more accurate values to enable more efficient testing.

  • The aim of this study is to manufacture an aluminum pipe yoke of automotive steering system for lightweight. In a multistage cold forging process for aluminum pipe yoke, the surface defects frequently occur due to excessive deformation or friction during extrusion process for forming hollow pipe part. It is import to reduce the friction between the material and the forging die. This study investigated a multistage forging process with sliding die to reduce friction for aluminum pipe yoke. After evaluating by FE analysis, the forging experiment with the sliding die was carried out. As a result, it was possible to manufacture a sound aluminum pipe yoke.

  • The purpose of this study was to contribute to the field application cost effectively and reasonably by developing the functional piles that reinforces shear force. CFP pile (Concrete Filled Pretensioned Spun High Strength Concrete Pile with Ring type Composite shear connectors) developed in this study increases the shear stress by placing composite shear connector and filling the concrete into hollow part of the pile. By placing the reinforcement (H13-8ea) and the reinforcement (H19-8ea) into hollow section inside of PHC piles, it also improves the shear strength due to increasing steel ratio. It reinforces shear strength effectively by dowel force that is generated by putting reinforcement (H13-8) into the holes of composite shear connectors for the composite behavior of filled concrete and PHC pile. The study was reviewed and compared the calculated result of the shear strength by limit state design method highway bridge design standards (2012) and experiment result of the shear strength by KS F 4306. We can design the shear strength reasonably as the safety ratio of 2.20, 2.15, 2.05 is shown comparing to design shear strength, according to design shear strength on each cross sections and the experiment results of the CFP pile.

  • Fatigue damage detection and vibration sensing for a laminated composites and impact location detection for a steel beam have been carried out using optical fiber sensor. Intensity based optical fiber sensor is constructed by placing two cleaved fiber end in a hollow glass tube, and multiple reflection within the cavity is considered. Fatigue signals are measured by embedded optical fiber, surface mounted optical fiber sensor and strain gage simultaneously. For vibration sensing, optical fiber sensor is mounted on the carbon fiber composite beam and its response to free vibration and forced vibration is investigated. In impact location detection, two optical fiber sensors are used and the information obtained from two sensors is arrival time delay of vibration caused by impact. Impact location can be calculated from this time delay. The obtained results show that the intensity based optical fiber sensor provide reliable data during long-term fatigue loading, unlike strain gage which deteriorate during the early part of the fatigue test. Optical fiber sensor signals coincide with gap sensor in vibration sensing. The precise locations of impact can be detected within 4.1% error limit.

  • The numerical simulations on 500-N class rocket engine using 96% hydrogen peroxide and kerosene have been conducted, considering atomization, evaporation, mixing and combustion of its propellants. The grid containing 1/6 part of combustion chamber has been generated and it is assumed that 3 kinds of liquid-phase propellants (kerosene, hydrogen peroxide and water) were injected as hollow cone spray pattern, using Rosin-Rammler function for distribution of droplet diameter. For the calculation of combustion the eddy-dissipation model was applied. Owing to small size of combustion chamber and large specific heat / latent heat of hydrogen peroxide and water the propulsion characteristics were highly influenced by the size of droplet particles, and in this analysis the engine with droplet particles of 30 micron in average has shown the best propulsion performance.
