  • A series of Brazilian tests under diameter compression for disc specimens was carried out to investigate the strength and failure behavior by using acoustic emission (AE) and photography monitoring technique. On the basis of experimental results, load-displacement curves, AE counts, real-time crack evolution process, failure modes and strength property of granite specimens containing two pre-existing holes were analyzed in detail. Two typical types of load-displacement curves are identified, i.e., sudden instability (type I) and progressive failure (type II). In accordance with the two types of load-displacement curves, the AE events also have different responses. The present experiments on disc specimens containing two pre-existing holes under Brazilian test reveal four distinct failure modes, including diametrical splitting failure mode (mode I), one crack coalescence failure mode (mode II), two crack coalescences failure mode (mode III) and no crack coalescence failure mode (mode IV). Compared with intact granite specimen, the disc specimen containing two holes fails with lower strength, which is closely related to the bridge angle. The failure strength of pre-holed specimen first decreases and then increases with the bridge angle. Finally, a preliminary interpretation was proposed to explain the strength evolution law of granite specimen containing two holes based on the microscopic observation of fracture plane.

  • The most costly and time-consuming process in the fabrication of today's multi-layer circuit board is drilling interconnection holes between adjacent layers and via holes within a layer. Decreasing size of via holes being demanded and growing number of via holes per panel increase drilling costs. Component density and electronic functionality of today's multi-layer circuit boards can be improved with the introduction of cost-effective, variable depth laser drilled blind micro via holes, and interconnection holes. Laser technology is being quickly adopted into the circuit board industry but can be accelerated with the introduction of a true production laser drilling system. In order to get optimized condition for drilling to FPCB (Flexible Printed Circuit Board), we use various drill pattern as drill step. For productivity, we investigate drill path optimization method. And for the precise drilling the thermal drift of scanner and temperature change of scan system are tested.

  • Due to the rapid spread of mobile handheld devices, industrial demands for micro-scale holes with a diameter of even smaller than $10{\mu}m$ in sapphire/silicon wafers have been increasing. Holes in sapphire wafers are for heat dissipation from LEDs; and those in silicon wafers for interlayer communication in three-dimensional integrated circuit (IC). We have developed a sapphire wafer driller equipped with a 532nm laser in which a cooling chuck is employed to minimize local heat accumulation in wafer. Through the optimization of process parameters (pulse energy, repetition rate, number of pulses), quality holes with a diameter of $30{\mu}m$ and a depth of $100{\mu}m$ can be drilled at a rate of 30holes/sec. We also have developed a silicon wafer driller equipped with a 355nm laser. It is able to drill quality through-holes of $15{\mu}m$ in diameter and $150{\mu}m$ in depth at a rate of 100holes/sec.

  • For further improvement of osseo-integration of bone crystal with a dental implant, a design optimization study is carried out for various holes inside its body to deliver bioactive materials and the effect of bioactive material injection on the bone crystal growing. When bioactive material is absorbed, the bone crystal can grow into holes, which would increase the strength of implant bonding as well as a surface integration. The stress concentrations near the uppermost outlet holes were reduced with increasing the number of outlet holes. A design improvement in the uppermost outlet was shown to be effective in reducing the stress concentration. For design parameters under consideration in this study, total area of outlet of 6.38 $mm^2$ and maximum stress of 1.114 MPa, which corresponds to type 6-C. It is due to the minimization of maximum stress and total area of outlet. The design of the outlet facing down was more effective in reducing the maximum stress value compared with a horizontal symmetry.

  • The flow in the LOX manifold of liquid rocket has been investigated using a CAE technique with an objective of economical modeling of injection holes in order to reduce the overall computational cost of flow analysis during the optimal rocket design procedure. The computational geometry is very close to that of the actual rocket design and the flow condition through the injection holes resembles that in the actual manifold of the liquid rocket. The result shows that the flow in the plane just above the injection holes is not uniformly distributed in terms of pressure and mass flow rate and this is attributed to the large-scale flow patterns present the LOX manifold. Thus, the flow physics should be understood correctly before making any attempt to model the injection holes. In the present study, several boundary conditions which were designed to effectively replace the presence of injection holes have been tested and it was found that a simple modeling can be possible by mimicking the actual geometry of the injection holes. By using this simple injection hole modeling, it was able to obtain about 30% reduction in computational cost but it was still able to reproduce the flow patterns correctly. Also the flow has been analyzed after incorporating a couple of different types of pre-distributors in LOX manifold and the effect of those will be discussed.

  • Purpose: Manufacturers rely on interfirm governance mechanisms to reduce the risks inherent in uncertain environments; however, it is unclear which governance mechanisms are developed to manage relationships with suppliers. This study sought to enhance knowledge of how environmental uncertainty affects interfirm governance mechanisms under conditions reflecting varying levels of structural holes. To this end, the study investigated the relationships between manufacturers and major first-tier and sub-suppliers. In particular, the moderating effect of structural holes is examined. Research design, data and methodology: A questionnaire survey was conducted with a major first-tier supplier of a Korean engineering firm. Proposed hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Results: The results show that while the relationship between environmental uncertainty and unilateral governance is positive but statistically insignificant, with bilateral governance is negative and statistically significant. The study also demonstrates that when structural holes are considered, the effects between environmental uncertainty and governance mechanisms are attenuated. Conclusions: This study suggests some theoretical and managerial contributions between exchange partners, especially, the results suggest that structural holes have a critical competitive advantage in uncertain environments. Therefore, manufacturers should carefully consider how they deal with environmental uncertainty when they make a business decision under structural holes situations.

  • The importance of wearing respiratory protective equipment has been highlighted even more during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even if the suitability of respiratory protection has been confirmed through testing in a laboratory environment, there remains the potential for leakage points in the respirators due to improper application by the wearer, damage to the equipment, or sudden movements in real working conditions. In this paper, we propose a method to detect the occurrence of leak holes by measuring the pressure changes inside the mask according to the wearer's breathing activity by attaching an IoT sensor to a full-face respirator. We designed 9 experimental scenarios by adjusting the degree of leak holes of the respirator and the breathing cycle time, and acquired respiratory data for the wearer of the respirator accordingly. Additionally, we analyzed the respiratory data to identify the duration and pressure change range for each breath, utilizing this data to train a neural network model for detecting leak holes in the respirator. The experimental results applying the developed neural network model showed a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 94.29%, and accuracy of 97.53%. We conclude that the effective detection of leak holes can be achieved by incorporating affordable, small-sized IoT sensors into respiratory protective equipment.
