  • The rotor design is fundamental to the performance and dynamic response of the Counter-rotating marine tidal current turbine. The wind industry has seen significant advancement single rotor blade technology, offering considerable knowledge and making it easy to transfer to tidal stream energy converters. In this paper, 3D flow and performance an alysis on a 100 kW counter-rotating marine current turbine blade was carried out by using the 3-D Navier-Stokes commercial solver(ANSYS CFX-11.0) to provide more efficient design techniques to design engineers. The front and rear rotor diameter is 8m and the rotating speed is 24.72rpm. Hexahedral meshing was generated by ICEM-CFD to achieve better quality of results. The rated power and its approaching stream velocity for design are 100 kW and 2 m/s respectively. The pressure distribution on the blade's suction side tells us that the pressure becomes low at the leading edge of the airfoil as it moves from the hub to the tip.

  • The goal of auricular cartilage harvest is to obtain a sufficient amount for reconstruction and to minimize the change in ear shape. The cartilage can be harvested by a posterior or anterior approach, and each method has advantages and disadvantages. The posterior approach presents the advantage of scar concealment, but there are limits to the amount of cymba cartilage that may be harvested. In contrast, the anterior approach may cause a noticeable scar. However, as cartilage is collected, the anterior approach provides a view that facilitates the preservation ear structure. In addition, it is possible to obtain a greater amount of cartilage. From January 2014 to December 2015, we harvested auricular cartilage graft material in 17 patients. To prevent the development of trapdoor scars or linear scar contracture, short incisions were made on the superior border of the cymba and cavum. Two small and narrow incisions were made, resulting in suboptimal exposure of the surgical site, which heightens the potential for damaging the cartilage when using existing tools. To minimize this, the authors used a newly invented ball-type elevator. All patients recovered without complications after surgery and reported satisfaction with the shape of the ear.

  • Ninety samples showing mosaic symptoms on soybean (Glycine max) cv. Sukryangputkong were collected from the Cheongsongkun area, Kyungbuk province in Korea. Initially, DAS-ELISA was conducted far detection of Soybean mosaic virus (SMV). Negative samples were chosen at random and mechanically inoculated on soybean cv. Buffalo, which reported not to produce mosaic symptoms when mechanically inoculated with SMV. An isolate of SMV, designated as B-1, from Buffalo showing mosaic and mottle symptoms was used for identification and biological characterization of the causal vim. The purified B-1 isolate had spherical particles of approximately 24nm. It positively reacted with the antiserum against Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) but not with Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and SMV antisera. CPMV was newly isolated from soybean and had been characterized by host range and by serological and electron microscopic methods. Results of this study suggest that CPMV is the possible cause of mosaic disease in vegetable soybean and that based on sympto-matology, a difference between the typical mosaic and rugose symptoms caused by SMV and CPMV was observed. This is first report of CPMV from soybean in Korea.

  • The response of environmental pollutants can be detected bioanalytically focusing on the source and matrices of concern. Cell culture bioassays are rapid and inexpensive, and thus have great potential for determination of environmental pollution. We have examined the estrogenic and dioxin-like activites of industrial wastewater using E-screen assay and EROD microbioassay. Influent and effluent wastewater were collected from four different industrial wastewater treatment plants, such as cosmetics, paints, textile producing and metal coating plant, and extracted using solid-phase extraction with Oasis@HLB plus cartridge. Pollutants adsorbed to the cartridge were eluted with MTBE. MCF-7 cells were treated with extracts showed various estrogenic potential. The textile wastewater showed strong estrogenic activity and the others showed weak estrogenic activity, No effect was observed in the wastewater from paints producing plant. All extracts showed CYPIA inducing effects, indicating these samples contain dioxin-like chemicals. Bioanalytical results of effluents compared with influents could give us information about the incomplete wastewater treatment and biological potency caused by pollutants. • This study analyzes the effect of anodizing conditions on nanopore formation on a cylindrical aluminum roll. In general, a nanopore is formed at the center of a concave base-pattern. Occasionally, multiple nanopores are formed on a single base-pattern. However, to control the diameter and interpore distance precisely, single nanopores are required. In this study, the ratio of the number of single nanopores to the total number of nanopores was investigated by varying anodizing conditions such as electrode area, electrolyte concentration, and rotation speed of the roll mold. The areal ratio of the counter-electrode to the working electrode (aluminum), electrolyte concentration, and the roll-mold rotation speed were varied from 0.4% to 42%, 0.07 M to 0.3 M, and 5 rpm to 75 rpm, respectively. The experimental results showed that the single-nanopore ratio increased with increasing counter-electrode area and electrolyte concentration. However, the rotation speed had no significant effect on nanopore shape.

  • In applying LCD to TV application, one of the most significant factors to be improved is image sticking on the moving picture. LCD is different from CRT in the sense that it's continuous passive device, which holds images in entire frame period, while impulse type device generate image in very short time. To reduce image sticking problem related to hold type display mode, we made an experiment to drive TN-LCD like CRT. We made articulate images by turn on-off backlight, and we realized the ratio of Back Light on-off time by counting between on time and off time for video signal input during 1 frame (16.7 ms). Conventional CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) cannot follow fast on-off speed, so we evaluated new fluorescent substances of light source to improve residual light characteristic of CCFL. We realized articulate image generation similar to CRT by CCFL blinking drive and TN-LCD overdriving. As a result, reduced image sticking phenomenon was validated by naked eye and response time measurement.
