  • This thesis is to research the change in attitude regarding the architectura ornament. One of the key dogmas within Modern Movement of art and design was anti-ornamentalism. The modernist had revolted against ornament and believed that the greatness of the modern age might lay in its inability to produce a new form of ornament. Architectural ornament has been passed through an process of evolution in a decadent stage. In this context, the purpose of this study is to identify historical meaning of architectural ornament in the age of transition toward Modernism.

  • The goal of this research is to find a theoretical base of the ecological paradigm, and explore the architectural ramification of the paradigm. To understand the paradigm in a historical and philosophical context, the paradigm is comparatively analyzed with the contrasting, Descartes-Newtonian paradigm to reveal the influence of each respective paradigm in various fields of science, such as logic, physics, bio-medical sciences, psychology, social sciences, and architecture. The affect in architectural ream is studied to find out the patterns of how the two contrasting paradigms have been materialized since the era of modern architecture and later. At the end, this paper proposes the possible architectural application methods of ecological design process.

A series of profiles of fashion companies, which have pursued policies of internationalisation, is presented. The challenges faced by fashion producers and retailers, as they enter the twenty-first century, are identified and the changing context of fashion consumption is recognised.

  • Misunderstanding of multimedia in the computer industry , the confusion of consumers, and the lack of understanding of technology in the human context provide an impetus for examining and speculating on the future of multimedia. "What can a multimedia technology do?" is not a sufficient question for consumers until we add " for whom" . Both how the relevant technology is likely to develop and how human choices would be made are examined with a focus on historical trend in media technology adoption.

  • Though known for its connections with maritime trade at varying degrees before the rise of the Manchus and their Qing Empire, Newchwang as a fortress did not become a populous urban settlement in the nineteenth century when the Euro-American observers arrived. Through examining the history of this trade-related locale in the Qing Empire, this article explores the broader historical context, especially the Eight Banners System of the Manchus, which prevented Newchwang from developing into a port-city, and the implications behind.

  • This article offers a new perspective on the maroon state of Palmares in Brazil. The present essay gives a viewpoint of decolonization in colonial period, describing decolonial aspect and Afro-Brazilian aspect of the history of Palmares. In aspects of Afro-Brazilian, the quilombo of Palmares is resistance and decoloniality of african colonialization in America and Brazil. The Quilombism was born out of quilombo model of economics and politics, in which they exercised rational productions and political system. The purpose is to review and expand upon the historical and cultural context of Palmares and on the aspect for decolonial strategies.

  • This paper reflects on the relationship between postcolonial criticism (PC) and Southeast Asian Studies. The emphasis is on the apparent premature retreat from PC as well as its unfulfilled promises and persistent pitfalls. I argue that it is premature to abandon PC because it remains relevant, even essential, in the context of the much ballyhooed age of "knowledge economy" or "information society." There is a need to take another look at its promises and to work towards fulfilling them, but at the same time be conscious of its persistent problems.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of urinary incontinence (UI) for elderly Korean women using a narrative approach. Methods: The data were collected using individual in-depth interviews with 15 communitydwelling elderly women who had UI for at least 1 yr. The narratives of the life stories of these women were analyzed from the actor’s perspective, motivation and purpose of actions, and action toward goal achievement. Also the narratives on UI were analyzed according to cognition, behavior, and evaluation of UI. Results: Three major types of the life stories emerged from the analysis. First, the conquest narrative type reflects active characteristics of narrators within the circumstances of the sociocultural context. Second, the patience narrative is characterized as having flexibility between self determination for goal achievement and the boundary of the sociocultural context. Lastly, the compliance narrative reflected characteristics of narrators who easily adapt their way of life to circumstances. In terms of UI, the narrators in all three types lacked awareness of UI as an illness condition. Three different reasons are specifically identified according to the narrative types. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the concept and the illness behaviors related to UI in elderly Korean women with UI were closely related to the way of women's lives within the sociocultural and historical context.

The conditions and principles of the 'Bionik' space design on the basis of the consilient horizon of biology and architecture (생물학과 건축의 통섭적 지평에 기초한 비오닉 공간디자인의 조건 및 원리)

  • In this research it is concentrated first of all on the attempts to reconstruct the historical context of the idea for the space design based on the natural construction and to re-appropriate il critically to the present context. Sequentially in the areas of philosophy, biology, neuroscience, and architecture it has been variously discussed on the problems about the synthesis of biology and techniques. In the context of the consilience of biology and technique Werner Nachtigall, who has intended to shed light on the morphological principles in the natural construction, founded the 'Bionik', which is different from the bionics or the biomechanics that are oriented to the imitation of natural forms. The space design that is on the basis of the Bionik treats organisms as a functional whole. Therefore the Bionik space design follows two kinds of principle such as the principle of analogy and the principle of optimization. After all the understanding of the consilience of nature and technique for Nachtigall and Bionik designers tends toward the explication of the complex process in which the human perceptions, the environment, and the phenomenal techniques are united together, and this complex process is associated with the space design based on the Bionik.
