Fifteen min-microtremor data sets were collected at 136 sites from a coastal area of Kunsan and 117 sites from an inland area of Jeonju located in SW Korea, and were analyzed for the HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) of the sites. The microtremor spectra of the coastal area have stronger energy in the lower frequency range from 1-6 Hz than those of the coastal area. This result can be attributed to the effect of the waves and tides in the Keum river and the Yellow sea. Twenty four hours of measurement of the microtremor indicated that the microtremor spectrum correlates with the human activities, but the microtremor HVSR peak was observed consistently at the characteristic frequency for the site. The HVSR peaks were grouped into 4 types -"single peak", "double peak", "broad peak" or "no peak"- based on their shapes. More than 90% of the data sets exhibit peak frequencies ($F_0$) which can be easily identified. The distribution of $F_0$ reveals a close relationship with the topography and local geology of the areas, exhibiting high F0s in the hillside areas and low $F_0s$ in the reclaimed land area. While the amplitudes of microtremor HVSR peak frequencies are less than 4 in the downstream of the inland area, those of the recently reclaimed land in the coastal area are extremely high (more than 10). The results of this study indicate that detailed HVSR studies are essential for the earthquake hazard reduction of reclaimed lands.
This study was carried out to investigate the quarrying and restoration characteristics on quarry in Korea. We researched quarrying and restoration status, analyzed the relationship between restoration area and permitted period, permitted area, quarrying volume, pit slope width, height, and berm width from 55 quarry sites. Most of the quarries were located in the following conditions : mixed forest, average altitude of less than 300 m, average mountain slope of $61^{\circ}$<, hillside, granite and landslide hazard class. Major quarrying characteristics were permitted period of 6~10 years, permitted area of less than 10 ha, quarrying volume of less than $1,000,000m^3$, a stone type of aggregate, a quarrying type of terrace, pit slope of $61^{\circ}$< Most quarries were restored by themselves, and the main restoration type was slope greening. Also, area ratio of flatland, pit slope, and berm was 54.9:39.6:5.5. Ccorrelation analysis showed that quarrying area was positively correlate with quarrying volume (${\alpha}=0.01$), permitted area, pit width, and pit height (a=0.05).
This study analyzed the characteristics of the disaster occurrence and disaster-prone zones on the 85 forest roads in the Jeollabuk-do area by referring to their forest environment factors. The on-site survey reveal the types of forest road disasters as follows: erosions of cutting slopes 54.1%, erosions of the filling slope 35.3%, collapses of cutting slopes with filling slope 9.4%, and erosions of road surface 1.1%. Disasters most frequently occurred in the vertical location (the hillside) and the horizontal location (the slope), and the forest factors affecting the road disasters were degree of cutting slopes in $31^{\circ}{\sim}40^{\circ}$, degree of filling slopes in $21^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$, and the soil texture of SiL. The most significant factors on the most frequent occurrence of forest road disasters were forest type of coniferous, slope aspect northeast, forest age of plantation and felling area, and rainfall in 1601~1700. An analysis of the occurrence of the forest road disasters in the Jeollabuk-do area showed a positive correlative relationship with the following factors of the forest environment within a 1% error: degree of cutting slope in $31^{\circ}{\sim}40^{\circ}$, annual accumulation rainfall in 1601~1700. and showed a positive correlative relationship with the following factors of the forest environment within a 5% error: horizontal location of valley, forest type of coniferous, length of slope more than 20 m, forest age of plantation and felling area, soil texture of SiL.

During the last few decades in Korea, the development of hillside or mountain areas has rapidly increased for infrastructure construction such as railroads, highways and housing. Many landslides have occurred during these constructions. Also, the amount and scale of damage caused by landslides have increased every year. In the case of Far East Asia including Korea, the damage of landslides is consequently reported during the wet season. In this paper, the effect of stabilizing piles on slope stability is checked and the behavior of slope soil and piles are observed throughout the year by field measurements in the large-scale cut slopes. In particular a large-scale cut slope situated on the construction site for the express highway in Donghae, Korea. First of all, The behavior of the slope soil was measured by inclinometers during slope modification. Landslides occurred in this area due to the soil cutting for slope modification. The horizontal deformations of slope soil gradually increased and rapidly decreased at depth of sliding surface indicating that the depth of sliding surface below the ground surface can be predicted. On the basis of being able to predict the depth of the sliding surface, stabilizing piles were designed and constructed in this slope. To ensure the stability of the reinforced slope using stabilizing piles, an instrumentation system was installed. The maximum deflection of piles is measured at the pile head and it is noted that the piles deform like deflection on a cantilever beam. The maximum bending stress of piles is measured at the soil layer. The pile above the soil layer is subjected to lateral earth pressure due to driving force of the slope, while pile below soil layer is subjected to subgrade reaction against pile deflection. As a result of research, the effect and applicability of stabilizing piles in large-scale cut slopes could be confirmed sufficiently.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of soil amendment with different characteristics on plant growth, fruit yield and quality of oriental melon for continuous cropping under protected cultivation. Humus layers in arable soil was disturbed because soil amendment from hillside to oriental melon field was continued to resolve problems for continuous cropping. Water potential and hardness of soil was decreased in sandy loam with lower clay contents compared with loam and silty clay. Leaf length and area, fresh and dry weight of plant at earlier growing stage were higher, but chlorophyll contents of leaves were dropped in sandy loam compared with silty clay soil. Fruit size and weight was higher in sandy loam, but soluble solid and color of fruit were increased in silty clay. Marketable and unmarketable yield and quantity of fermented fruit were the highest in sandy loam. Hardness and weight of fruit were decreased by longer storage period and soluble solids of fruit was peaked at 5 day after storage, but decreased by prolonged continued storage. Because of these results, soil characteristics of amendment to oriental melon field should be considered as an important factor for quality and yield of oriental melon.
The results of this research on the diversity, zonation of vegetation and micro-topography by TWINSPAN classification and DECORANA ordination, executed with Sinduri coastal dunes of Korea, are as follows: The vegetation and micro-topography of coastal dunes formed a noticeably clear zonation structure. The beach in the direction of the coastline saw a lot of appearance of Salsola komarovi and the primary dune was dominated by Elymus mollis. Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii and Carex pumila formed a colony at flat area of the sand hills and Calamagrostis epigeios was widely distributed at the wet slack. The secondary dune was dominated mostly by Ischaemum anthephoroides and Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, and it showed an aspect of the distribution of Vitex rotundifolia and Rosa rugosa. while the hinterland hillside in the direction of inland was dominated by Robinia pseudo-acacia and Pinus thunbergii. However, Carex kobomugi, known as the pioneer species of the coastline-bound areas at the coastal dune, dominantly occupied the secondary dune of the rear side and continentally-inclined Miscanthus sinensi and Oenothera biennis of naturalized plant were irregularly spread over the whole of the coastal dune, so the stabilization of micro-topography seemed to be uncertain. Particularly, Miscanthus sinensis was predicted to be changed into dominant species of the primary dune, and secondary dune and slack having a commonly high species gathering inclination with the more progress of stabilization of the coastal dune. The expansion of sand hill wetlands and roads located between the primary dune and secondary dune was judged to have an effect on the zonation structure of plant distribution.
This study was carried out to develop assessment model for the optimal site prediction of Dendropanax morbifera, Evergreen broad-leaved trees in warm temperate zone according to climate change. It was created criterion for assessment model of the optimal site prediction by quantification method to possible analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, through study relationship between growth of tree and site environmental factors. A program of the optimal site prediction was developed using program version 3.2, an Avenue and Dialog Designer tool of ESRI as GIS(geographic information system) engine. Developed program applied to test accuracy of the optimal site prediction in study area of Wando, Jeollanam-do, having a various evergreen broad-leaved trees of warm temperate zone. The area and carbon stocks of optimal site prediction by class for Q. acuta in classI showed 147.1 ha (2.5%), total 316.5 tC/ha, total $1,161tCO_2/ha/yr$ of class I, 2,703.5 ha (46.3%), total 5,817.4 tC/ha, total $21,331tCO_2/ha/yr$ of class II, 2,845.5 ha (48.6%), total 6,123.0 tC/ha, total $2,845.5tCO_2/ha/yr$ of class III and 153.7 ha (2.6%), total 330.7 tC/ha, total $1,213.7tCO_2/ha/yr$ of class IV.
Soil harness represents such physical properties as porosity, amount of water, bulk density and soil texture. It is very important to know the mechanical properties of soil as well as the chemical in order to research the fundamental phenomena in the growth and the distribution of tree roots. The writer intended to grip soil hardness by soil layer and also to grasp the root distribution and the correlation between soil hardness and the root distribution of Pinus riguda Mill. planted on the denuded hillside with sooding works by soil layer on soil profile. The site investigated is situated at Peongchang-ri 13, Kocksung county, Chon-nam Province. The area is consisted of 3.63 ha having on elevation of 167.5-207.5 m. Soil texture is sandy loam and parant rock in granite. Average slope of the area is $17^{\circ}-30^{\circ}$. Soil moisture condition is dry. Main exposure of the area is NW or SW. The total number of plots investigated was 24 plots. It divided into two groups by direction each 12 plots in NW and SW and divided into three groups by the position of mountain plots in foot of mountain, in hillside, and in summit of mountain, respectively. Each sampling tree was selected as specimen by purposive sampling and soil profile was made at the downward distance of 50cm form the sampling tree at each plot. Soil hardness, soil layer surveying, root distribution of the tree and vegetation were measured and investigated at the each plot. The soil hardness measured by the Yamanaka Soil Hardness Tester in mm unit. the results are as follows: 1) Soil hardness increases gradually in conformity with the increment of soil depth. The average soil indicator hardness by soil layer are as follows: 14.6mm in I - soil layer (0-10cm in depth from soil surface), 16.2mm in II - soil layer (10-20cm), 17.2 in III - soil layer (20-30cm), 18.3mm in IV - soil layer(30-40cm), 19.8mm in V - soil layer (4.50mm). 2) The tree roots (less than 20mm in diameter) distribute more in the surface layer than in the subsoil layer and decrease gradually according to the increment of soil depth. The ratio of the root distribution can be illustrated by comparing with each of five soil layers from surface to subsoil layer as follows: I - soil layer; 31%, II - soil layer; 26%, III - soil layer; 18%, IV - soil layer; 12%, V - soil layer; 13%, 3) Soil hardness and tree root distribution (less than 20mm in diameter) of Pinus rigida Mill. correlate negatively each other; the more soil hardness increases, the most root distribution decreases. The correlation coefficients between soil hardness and distribution of tree roots by soil layer are as follows: I - soil layer; -0.3675 (at the 10% significance level), II - soil layer; -0.5299 (at the 1% significance level), III - soil layer; -0.5573 (at the 2% significance level), IV - soil layer; -0.6922 (at the 5% significance level), V - soil layer; -0.7325 (at the 2% significance level). 4) the most suitable range of soil hardness for the growth of Pinus rigida Mill is the range of 12-14.9mm in soil indicator hardness. In this range of soil indicator hardness, the root distribution of this tree amounts to 41.8% in spite of 33% in soil harness and under the 20.9mm of soil indicator hardness, the distribution amounts to 93.2% in spite of 82% in soil hardness. Judging from above facts, the roots of Pinus rigida can easily grow within the soil condition of 20.9mm in soil indicator hardness. 5) The soil layers are classified by their depths from the surface soil.
Analysing the reports of disaster-related, average annual death of lives due to the meteorological disasters amounted to be 250, of which about 90 were due to landslide. According to the last 10-year reports, the average area of landslide occurred reaches 275 hectares per year in Korea. The total cost for rehabilitation could annually require more than about 2 billion Won (about US$ 2.5 million). The basic countermeasure policy against such heavy disasters should be definitely taken on prevention rather than rehabilitation after being damaged. However, prevention countermeasures against landslide-related disasters have not been strengthened in Korea although being important. Areas of high landslide hazard must be designated with increase in number from current 10 (35 cities and counties) to 17 (68 cities and counties included : Table 3). Number of regional Erosion Control Stations taking full charge of rehabilitating works on the damaged land resulted from landslide disaster has to increase from currently 15 stations to 25. The stone buttressed terrace structures on the hillside slopes, being typical erosion control measures in Korea have been recently recognized as one of the most effective rehabilitation measures for the land damaged by landslides.
