  • This paper presents a new velocity estimation strategy of a non-salient permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) drive without high frequency signal injection or special PWM pattern. This approach is based on the d-axis current regulator output voltage of the drive system which has the information of rotor position error. The rotor velocity can be estimated through a rotor position tracking PI controller that controls the position error to zero. For zero and low speed operation, the PI gains of rotor position tracking controller have a variable structure. The PI tuning formulas are derived by analyzing this control system using the frequency domain specifications such as phase margin and bandwidth assignment.

  • The uneven reaction surface profile facing the lift magnets in attractive Maglev vehicles naturally brings about pitch motion of the bogie. In particular, in the placement configuration of the long stator of the linear synchronous motor (LSM) on the track for high-speed propulsion, surface irregularities and the offsets between the stator packs create measurable airgaps, i.e., the clearance between the magnet and the stator, with discontinuously extreme values, resulting in bogie pitch motion. This occurs because the airgap velocities and accelerations derived by the differentiations of the measured air-gaps are used to determine the voltages applied to the magnets. This paper incorporates bogie pitch motion into a control law for each magnet controller to reduce the variations in both the airgap and the pitch angle. The effectiveness of the proposed method is analyzed using a full-scale Maglev vehicle running over a test track.

  • The wound induction motor can provide high starting torque and reduced starting current simultaneously by inserting large resistor externally when starting. And this technique is one of the well known methods among the induction motor starting methods and generally used for heavy load starting such as crane and cement factories. The conventional PI controller has been widely used in industrial application due to the simple control algorithm and is generally used for control of current torque, position, and speed for the wound induction motor drive system. However, the conventional control system for wound induction motor may result in poor performance because sensors have to be used but are often limited by the environmental condition. Recently, to overcome these problems, many sensorless vector control methods for the wound induction motor have been studied. This paper presents a MRAS method for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor drive. In the conventional MRAS method, in low frequency, the stator resistance variation may result in poor performance. Therefore, this paper presents a MRAS method with stator and rotor resistance tuning for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor to overcome several shortages of the conventional MRAS caused by parameter variation and to enhance the robustness of the sensorless vector control. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through digital simulation.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate driving performance of Healthy and disabled groups (with or without driver's license) to control steering wheel by using steering assistive devices in the driving simulator. The persons with partial loss of use of all four limbs have problems in operation of the motor vehicle because of functional loss to operate steering wheel. Therefore, if steering assistive devices for grasping the steering wheel are used to control the vehicle on the road in persons with disabilities, the disabled persons can improve mobility in their community life by driving a motor vehicle safely. Ten healthy subjects (with or w/o driver's license) and ten subjects with physical disabilities (with or w/o driver's license) were involved in this study to evaluate driving performance to operate steering wheel by using four types of steering assistive devices (Single-pin, V-grip, Palm-grip, Tri-pin) in driving simulator. STISim Drive 3 software was used to test the steering performance in four scenarios: straight road at low and high speed of vehicle (40 km/h and 80 km/h), curved road at low and high speed of vehicle (40 km/h and 80 km/h). This study used two-way ANOVA in order to compare the effects of two factors (type of steering assistive device and subject group) in the three dependent variables of driving performance (the lateral position of vehicle, standard deviation of lateral position representing the variation of the left and right movement of the vehicle and the number of line crossing). The mean values of the three dependent variables (lateral position, standard deviation of lateral position, the number of line crossing) of steering performance were statistically significantly smaller for the healthy or disabled groups with driver's license than the other groups without driver's license on the curved road at high speed of vehicle compared to low speed of vehicle.

  • As the continuous casting process is to product slab with high temperature liquid steel, the main role of strand driven roll is to withdraw slab from mold as operator set up casting speed pattern. The strand driven roll in old cast machine is controlled casting speed only. Due to inaccuracies in drive setting up, varying roll diameters, bulging in the product, withdrawal force was distributed irregularly. As a result, because of horizontal crack in slab comer, high casting speed can't be achieved. In this paper, the correlation between the distribution of withdrawal force and slab quality is investigated and the new control algorithm which can be distributed regularly the withdrawal force of strand driven roll is proposed. The principle of proposed algorithm is not to control motor torque directly but to control motor speed reference according to sharing ratio of withdrawal force which is set up in high level controller. The proposed algorithm implemented in POSCO Kwangyang 1-4 continuous casting plant.

  • A large number of motors and sensors are used to drive a humanoid robot. In order to solve the wiring problem that occurs when connecting multiple actuators, a controller based on a communication network has been used, and CAN, which is advantageous in terms of cost and a highly reliable communication protocol, was mainly used. In terms of the structure of the controller, a torque control type structure that is easy to implement an advanced algorithm into the upper controller is preferred. In this case, the low communication bandwidth of CAN becomes a problem, and in order to obtain sufficient communication bandwidth, a communication network is configured by separating into a plurality of CAN networks. In this study, a stability analysis on transmission time delay is performed for a multi-motor control system in which high-speed FlexRay and low-speed CAN communication networks are hierarchically connected in order to obtain a high communication bandwidth, and sensor information and driving signals are delivered within the allowed transmission time. The proposed hierarchical network-based control system is expected to improve control performance because it can implement multiple motor control systems with a single network.

  • Compression pressure of individual cylinder and valve timing have big influence on combustion pressure, indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), emission, vibration, combustion noise and many other combustion parameters. Therefore, uniformity of compression pressure and valve timing became one of most important engine design and production standard. Conventional method to evaluate compression pressure uniformity is to measure each cylinder pressure by mechanical pressure gage during cranking. This conventional method causes inaccuracy of cylinder pressure measurement because of different cranking speed results from battery status and also causes high manhour and cost. To check valve timing, related FEAD parts should be disassembled and timing mark should be checked manually. This study describes and suggests new methodology to measure compression pressure by analysis of start motor current and to check valve timing by cylinder pressure with high accuracy. With this new methodology, possibility to detect leaky cylinder and wrong valve timing was observed.

  • Transverse flux machine (TFM) has been proved to be very suitable for high-torque, low-speed, and direct-drive situation in industry. But the complex structures and costly permanent magnets (PMs) are two key limitations of its wide range of applications. This paper proposes a new claw pole TFM (ACPTFM) which features an assembled claw pole stator and using the lamination steels material to overcome the complex structures. By combining response surface methodology (RSM) with design of experiment, an optimum design method is put forward to improve the PM's contribution to the torque in order to save the PM's amount. The optimum design results demonstrate the validity of the proposed optimum design method and the optimized model. Eventually, the finite-element analysis (FEA) calculation method, which is used in the optimization process, is verified by the experiments in a prototype.

  • This paper is suggested an optimal switching angle of a switched reluctance motor drive system for maximum energy ratio. A new magnetizing method with a low-frequency increasing the energy conversion ratio that is related to the efficiency of motor is proposed As results, it improves the efficiency about 2[$\%$]. And a torque ripple is also reduced compared with that of the conventional switching angle magnetizing approach. In order to start softly regardless of a large ripple torque, the profile of phase current is predicted and current control mode was adapted when it is operated under the starting speed.
