Using SPOT satellite imagery, 3 dimensional geographic information can be obtained from SPOT's oblique viewing image. Especially, SPOT provides high spatial resolution, adequate base/height ratio and stable orbit characteristics. In this paper, 3D terrain features were extracted using SPOT stereo image and also the techniques for generation of 3D graphic data were developed for the extracted terrain features. We developed computer programs to generate automatically 3D graphic files and to display geographic information on the computer screen. The results of this study may be effectively utilized for the development of 3D geographic information using satellite images.

The purpose of this study is to present a standardized scheme for providing agriculture-related information at various spatial resolutions of satellite images including Landsat+ETM, KOMPSAT-1 EOC, ASTER VNIR, and IKONOS panchromatic and multi-spectral images. The satellite images were interpreted especially for identifying agricultural areas, crop types, agricultural facilities and structures. The results were compared with the land cover/land use classification system suggested by Ministry of Construction & Transportation based on NGIS (National Geographic Information System) and Ministry of Environment based on satellite remote sensing data. As a result, high-resolution agricultural land cover map from IKONOS imageries was made out. The results by IKONOS image will be provided to KOMPSAT-2 project for agricultural application.
Epipolar images have to be generated to stereo display aerial images or satellite images. Pushbroom sensor is used to acquire high resolution satellite images. These satellite images have curvilinear epipolar lines unlike the epipolar lines of frame images, which are straight lines. The aforementioned fact makes it difficult to generate epipolar images for pushbroom satellite images. If we assume a linear transition of the sensor having constant speed and attitude during image acquisition, we can generate epipolar images based on parallel projection model (2D Affine model). Recent high resolution images are provided with RPC values so that we can exploit these values to generate epipolar images without using ground control points and tie point. This paper provides a procedure based on the parallel projection model for generating epipolar images directly from a stereo IKONOS images, and experimental results.
The Saemangeum embankment construction have changed the flowing on the topography of the coastal marine environment. However, the variety of ecological factors are changing from outside of Saemangeum embankment area. The ecosystem of various marine organisms have led to changes by sea surface temperature. The aim of this study is to monitoring of sea surface temperature(SST) changes were measured by using thermal infrared satellite imagery, MODIS and Landsat. The MODIS data have the high temporal resolution and Landsat satellite data with high spatial resolution was used for time series monitoring. The extracted informations from sea surface temperature changes were compared with the dyke to allow them inside and outside of Saemangeum embankment. The spatial extent of the spread of sea water were analyzed by SST using MODIS and Landsat thermal channel data. The difference of sea surface temperature between inland and offshore waters of Saemangeum embankment have changed by seasonal flow and residence time of sea water in dyke.

Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generation from remotely sensed imagery is crucial for a variety of mapping applications such as ortho-photo generation, city modeling. High resolution imaging satellites such as SPOT-5, IKONOS, QUICK-BIRD, ORBVIEW constitute an excellent source for efficient and economic generation of DEM data. However, prerequisite knowledge in the areas of sensor modeling, epipolar resampling, and image matching is required to generate DEM from these high resolution satellite imagery. From the above requirements, epipolar resampling emerges as the most important factors. Research attempts in this area are still in high demand and short supply. Another cause that adds to the complication of the problem is that most studies of DEM generation from IKONOS scenes have been based on rational function model. In this paper, we proposed a new methodology for DEM generation from satellite scenes using parallel projection model which is sensor independent, makes it possible for sensor modeling and epipolar resampling by only few control points. The performance and feasibility of the developed methodology is evaluated through real dataset captured by IKONOS.
Multispectral image data of high spatial resolution is required to obtain correct information on the ground surface. The multispectral image data has lower resolution compared to panchromatic data. PAN-sharpening fusion technique produces the multispectral data with higher resolution of panchromatic image. Recently the object-based approach is more applied to the high spatial resolution data than the conventional pixel-based one. For the object-based image analysis, it is necessary to perform image segmentation that produces the objects of pixel group. Image segmentation can be effectively achieved by the process merging step-by-step two neighboring regions in RAG (Regional Adjacency Graph). In the satellite remote sensing, the operational environment of the satellite sensor causes image degradation during the image acquisition. This degradation increases variation of pixel values in same area, and results in deteriorating the accuracy of image segmentation. An iterative approach that reduces the difference of pixel values in two neighboring pixels of same area is employed to alleviate variation of pixel values in same area. The size of segmented regions is associated with the quality of image segmentation and is decided by a stopping rue in the merging process. In this study, the image restoration and segmentation was quantitatively evaluated using simulation data and was also applied to the three PAN-sharpened multispectral images of high resolution: Dubaisat-2 data of 1m panchromatic resolution from LA, USA and KOMPSAT3 data of 0.7m panchromatic resolution from Daejeon and Chungcheongnam-do in the Korean peninsula. The experimental results imply that the proposed method can improve analytical accuracy in the application of remote sensing high resolution PAN-sharpened multispectral imagery.
Since 1988, pine wilt disease has spread over rapidly in Korea. It is not easy to detect the damaged pine trees by pine wilt disease from conventional remote sensing skills. Thus, many possibilities were investigated to detect the damaged pines using various kinds of remote sensing data including high spatial resolution satellite image of 2000/2003 IKONOS and 2005 QuickBird, aerial photos, and digital airborne data, too. Time series of B&W aerial photos at the scale of 1:6,000 were used to validate the results. A local maximum filtering was adapted to determine whether the damaged pines could be detected or not at the tree level from high resolution satellite images, and to locate the damaged trees. Several enhancement methods such as NDVI and image transformations were examined to find out the optimal detection method. Considering the mean crown radius of pine trees, local maximum filter with 3 pixels in radius was adapted to detect the damaged trees on IKONOS image. CIR images of 50 cm resolution were taken by PKNU-3(REDLAKE MS4000) sensor. The simulated CIR images with resolutions of 1 m, 2 m, and 4 m were generated to test the possibility of tree detection both in a stereo and a single mode. In conclusion, in order to detect the pine tree damaged by pine wilt disease at a tree level from satellite image, a spatial resolution might be less than 1 m in a single mode and/or 1 m in a stereo mode.

For agricultural water management, it is essential to establish the digital infrastructure data such as agricultural watershed, irrigated area and canal network in rural areas. Approximately 70,000 irrigation facilities in agricultural watershed, including reservoirs, pumping and draining stations, weirs, and tube wells have been installed in South Korea to enable the efficient management of agricultural water. The total length of irrigation and drainage canal network, important components of agricultural water supply, is 184,000 km. Major problem faced by irrigation facilities management is that these facilities are spread over an irrigated area at a low density and are difficult to access. In addition, the management of irrigation facilities suffers from missing or errors of spatial information and acquisition of limited range of data through direct survey. Therefore, it is necessary to establish and redefine accurate identification of irrigated areas and canal network using up-to-date high resolution images. In this study, previous existing data such as RIMS (Rural Infrastructure Management System), smart farm map, and land cover map were used to redefine irrigated area and canal network based on appropriate image data using satellite imagery, aerial imagery, and drone imagery. The results of the building the digital infrastructure in rural areas are expected to be utilized for efficient water allocation and planning, such as identifying areas of water shortage and monitoring spatiotemporal distribution of water supply by irrigated areas and irrigation canal network.

With the launch of Compact Advanced Satellite 500 series of various characteristics and the operation of KOMPSAT-3/3A, uses of high-resolution satellite images have been continuously increased. Especially, in order to provide satellite images in the form of ARD (Analysis Ready Data), various pre-processing such as geometric correction and radiometric correction have been developed. For pre-processing of high spatial satellite imagery, auxiliary information, such as solar zenith, solar azimuth and offnadir angle, should be required. However, most of the high-resolution satellite images provide the solar zenith and nadir angle for the entire image as a single variable. In this paper, the solar zenith and offnadir angle corresponding to each pixel of the image were calculated using RFM (Rational Function Model) and auxiliary information of the image, and the quality of extracted information were evaluated. In particular, for the utilization of pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle, pixel-based auxiliary data were applied in calculating the top of atmospheric reflectance, and comparative evaluation with a single constant-based top of atmospheric reflectance was performed. In the experiments using various satellite imagery, the pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle information showed a similar tendency to the auxiliary information of satellite sensor, and it was confirmed that the distortion was reduced in the calculated reflectance in the top of atmospheric reflectance.

A research on extracting croplands located nearby coastal areas using the spatial information data sets is the important task for managing the agricultural products in coastal areas. This research aims to extract the various croplands(croplands on mountains and croplands on plain areas) located nearby coastal areas using the KOMPSAT-2 imagery, the high-resolution satellite imagery, and the airborne topographic LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) data acquired in coastal areas of Uljin, Korea. Firstly, the NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) imagery is generated from the KOMPSAT-2 imagery, and the vegetation areas are extracted from the NDVI imagery by using the appropriate threshold. Then, the DSM(Digital Surface Model) and DEM(Digital Elevation Model) are generated from the LiDAR data by using interpolation method, and the CHM(Canopy Height Model) is generated using the differences of the pixel values of the DSM and DEM. Then the plain areas are extracted from the CHM by using the appropriate threshold. The low slope areas are also extracted from the slope map generated using the pixel values of the DEM. Finally, the areas of intersection of the vegetation areas, the plain areas and the low slope areas are extracted with the areas higher than the threshold and they are defined as the croplands located nearby coastal areas. The statistical results show that 85% of the croplands on plain areas and 15% of the croplands on mountains located nearby coastal areas are extracted by using the proposed methodology.
