  • Performance of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) can be enhanced by converting thermal energy of its high temperature exhaust gas to mechanical power using a micro gas turbine (MGT). A MGT plays also an important role to pressurize and warm up inlet gas streams of the SOFC. In this study, the influence of performance characteristics of the tubular SOFC on the hybrid power system is discussed. For this purpose, detailed heat and mass transfer with reforming and electrochemical reactions in the SOFC are mathematically modeled, and their results are reflected to the performance analysis. The analysis target is 220kWe SOFC/MGT hybrid system based on the tubular SOFC developed by Siemens-Westinghouse. Special attention is paid to the ohmic losses in the tubular SOFC counting not only current flow in radial direction, but also current flow in circumferential direction through the anode and cathode.

  • A performance analysis of a SOFC/MGT hybrid system has been carried out for concept design. Thermo-dynamic models for each component being able to describe electrochemical characteristics and heat and mate-rial balance are proposed. Estimated is the power capacity of a SOFC suitable for the hybrid operation with a 5kW class MGT. Effects of current density and operating pressure are also investigated. Electric efficiency showed weak dependence on operating pressure and current density. It is desirable that the SOFC operates at high current density in manufacturing cost's point of view though operating with high current density slightly decreases the electric efficiency find specific power.

  • In this research, the initial sizing of a HALE(High Altitude Long Endurance) UAV which uses solar power and hydrogen fuel cell as an alternative energy was performed. Instead of a wing box type, a glider type was chosen since it is relatively easy to get a data thanks to many researches abroad. Maximum takeoff weight is around 150Kg and the propulsion system is composed of motor, propeller, solar cell, and hydrogen fuel cell which can be recharged through electrolysis. Maximum takeoff weight was estimated as aspect ratio, wing span, wing area change while considering energy balance of required energy which is necessary for flight during the entire day and available energy which can be taken from the solar cell.

  • The durability test of turbo-blower for PEM fuel cell is very important process of BOP development. It is a major barrier to the commercialization of these systems for stationary and transportation power applications. Commercial viability depends on improving the durability of the air supply system to increase the reliability and to reduce the lifetime cost. In this study, turbo-blower supported by oil-free bearing is introduced as the air supply system used by 80kW proton exchange membrane fuel systems. The turbo-blower is a turbo machine which operates at high speed, so air foil bearings suit their purpose as bearing elements. The impeller of blower was adopted mixed type of centrifugal and axial. So, it has several advantages for variable operating condition. The turbo-blower test results show maximum parasitic power levels below 1.67kW with the 30,000 rpm rotating speed, the flow rate of air has maximum 163SCFM(@PR1.1). For proper application of FCV, these have to durability test. This paper describes the experiment for confirming endurance and stability of the turbo-blower for 500 hours.

  • Air Management System is composed by Pump, Fan, Compressor and Blower In general their performances depend on the capability of the motor, power converter device and controller. Especially, it should be noticed upon designing Air Management System using for Fuel Cell System, that Pump, Fan, Compressor and Blower satisfy the condition of the high performance, high efficiency, high density and reasonable price considering the safety and Economic Efficiency. In order for this, it should be studied that which kind of Motor is the most suited for Air Management System for Fuel Cell, such as Induction Motor, Brushless DC Motor, and Switched Reluctance Motor which is widely using in industry. This paper presents the designing and manufacturing of Outer Rotor Type BLDC Motor and Driver for Air Blower of Air Management System. Experimental results from a laboratory prototype arc presented to validate the feasibility of the proposed Air Blower Motor and Driver.

  • Recently, as a demand for the portable device is surged, there are needs to develop a new fuel cell system for replacing the conventionally used secondary battery. For this purpose, it becomes important to develop direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) that uses formic acid as a fuel. The formic acid can offer typical advantages such as excellent non-toxicity of the level to be used as food additive, smaller crossover flux through electrolyte, and high reaction capability caused by high theoretical electromotive force (EMF). With the typical merits of formic acid, the efforts for optimizing reaction catalyst and cell design are being made to enhance performance and long term stability of DFAFC. As a result, to date, the DFAFC having the power density of more than $300mW/cm^2$ was developed. In this paper, basic performing theory and configuration of DFAFC are initially introduced and future opportunities of DFAFC including the development of catalyst for the anode electrode and electrolyte, and design for the optimization of cell structure are discussed.

  • The electrochemical reaction of refuse derived fuel (RDF) and refuse plastic/paper fuel (RPF) was investigated in the direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) system. The open circuit voltage (OCV) of RPF was higher than RDF and other coals because of its thermal reactive characteristic under carbon dioxide. The thermal reactivity of fuels was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis method. and the reaction rate of RPF was higher than other fuels. The behavior of all sample's potential was analogous in the beginning region of electrochemical reactions due to similar functional groups on the surface of fuels analyzed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy experiments. The potential level of RDF and RPF decreased rapidly comparing to coals in the next of the electrochemical reaction because the surface area and pore volume investigated by nitrogen gas adsorption tests were smaller than coals. This characteristic signifies the contact surface between electrolyte and fuel is restricted. The potential of fuels was maintained to the high current density region over 40 $mA/cm^2$ by total carbon component. The maximum power density of RDF and RPF reached up to 45~70% comparing to coal. The obvious improvement of maximum power density by increasing operating temperature was observed in both refuse fuels.

  • Metal-reducing bacterium, Geobacter sulfurreducens is available for mediator-less microbial fuel cell (MFC) because it has biological nanowires(pili) which transfer electrons to outside the cell. In this study, in the anode chamber of the MFC system using G. sulfurreducens, the concentrations of NaCl, sodium phosphate and sodium bicarbonate as electrolytes were mainly optimized for the generation of electricity from acetate. 0.4%(w/v) NaClO and 0.5M $H_2SO_4$ could be utilized for the sterilization of acrylic plates and proton exchange membrane (major construction materials of the MFC reactor), respectively. When NaCl concentration in anode phosphate buffer increased from 5 to 50 mM, power density increased from 6 to $20\;mW/m^2$. However, with increasing sodium phosphate buffer concentration from 5 to 50 mM, power density significantly decreased from 18 to $1\;mW/m^2$. Twenty-four mM sodium bicarbonate did not affect electricity generation as well as pH under 50 mM phosphate buffer condition. Optimized anode chamber of MFC using G. sulfurreducens generated relatively high power density ($20\;mW/m^2$) with the maximum coulombic efficiency (41.3%).
