  • To compare the performance of aluminized solid propellants, the theoretical calculation was performed for the propellants using HTPB and PEG binder and four kinds of oxidizers such as AP, HMX, ADN, and HNIW. PEG/HMX/Al and PEG/HNIW/Al showed the maximum performance at 17% of aluminum level and there was no difference in maximum performance when HMX was partially replaced with AP in PEG/HMX/AP/Al propellant. The order of performance magnitude of various propellants which the specific impulse loss calculation was considered by semi-empirical equation was like the following; PEG/HNIW/AI>[$\frac{PEG/HMX/AI}{PEG/HMX/AP/AI}$>HTPB/AP/AI>PEG/ADN/AI

  • Notable are the burning rate characteristics of solid propellant burning at extremely high pressure(10000-20000 psia). The burning rate test using closed bomb shows the discontinuous increment around 4000 psia so that the exponent of burning rate(n) is almost double, from 0.4 to 0.8. The pressure-increasing rate of the test motor is about 300 times as high as that of the motor operating at the conventional pressure, less than 2000 psia, is, therefor the burning rate is augmented about 5-50 times. The performance prediction reflecting the pressure-change-rate effect are fairly comparable with the test data at various test conditions.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) is achieving the Korea Space Launch Vehicle(KSLV) program according to National Space Technology Development Program. KSLV-I will be composed to liquid propellant(first stage) and solid propellant(second stage) propulsion system. The propulsion system of KSLV-I second stage is solid kick motor with high expansion ratio and its starting altitude is 300km high. In order to verify the performance of upper stage propulsion system designed to operate in the upper atmosphere, test facility which can simulate high altitude is needed. High Altitude Simulation Test Facility is composed to Thrust Measurement System, Control & Measurement system, Diffuser, SKID for cooling water supply to diffuser, CCTV, fire protection system and so on. This paper introduces TMS adapted to High Altitude Simulation Test for KSLV-I Kick Motor Development and results of hot firing test for its performance verification.

  • As pulse detonation engine(PDE) does not need compression mechanisms such as compressors because self-sustained detonation waves are able to compress propellant gases by their incident shock waves, the PDE can have a simple straight-tube structure. In this study, we propose an autonomous driving valve system of the PDE, which fill premixed gases into the PDE tubes at high frequency with high mass flow rate. The proposed valve is composed of only three parts: a piston, a cylinder, and a spring. This valve system can produce intermittent flow at high mass flow rate, and also can keep stable reciprocal motion by using the propellant-gas enthalpy. When the cylinder content product is assumed to be constant, experimental results of the mass flow rate were approximately equal to the calculation model. We confirmed the autonomous driving valve performance by experiments, and concluded that this extremely simple valve with no electrical power and controller can be used as the PDE propellant supply system.

  • Solid rocket propulsion systems are generally used for tactical missiles due to the structural and operational simplicity. Nevertheless, various kinds of design factors including outer diameter, length, weight, loading efficiency of propellant grain effects to thrust performance. Dual thrust is beneficial to range extension and terminal velocity increasement. But loading efficiency becomes low in case to obtain dual thrust performance by burning surface control. So, It is predicted to be reasonable to obtain dual thrust performance with high/low burning rate propellants. This study is on internal ballistic analysis and ground test to confirm dual thrust performance.

  • To research and develop a high performance injector for LRE, it needs not only cold flow test, but also investigations of combustion performance, optimization of cyclogram and thermo-fluid dynamical characteristics of combustion flow field through hot-fire test. In this study, hot-fire test of LOX-CH4 coaxial swirl injector has been carried out using lab-scale hot fire test stand which can supply and control cryogenic propellant. Ignition and continuous combustion for LOX-$GCH_4$ propellant of 0.19 kg/s total mass flowrate and 2.80 O/F Ratio was achieved through cyclogram optimization. The mean combustion chamber pressure and thrust were measured as approximately 1.43 MPa and 38.7 kgf respectively.

  • This Study is to investigate 8 composite propellants including Butacene and ${Bi_2}{O_3}$ by Shotgun/RQ Bomb test. Burning rate and mechanical properity are known to be major factors in determining the deflagrability of propellant. Propellant including over 5.5% Butacene(Ferrocene grafted HTPB) burned out over 135 m/s of impact velocity during Shotgun/RQ Bomb test. It was blown that Butacene was very sensitive material under high velocity impact. In the test results, propellants under 25mm/s in burning rate at 1500 psia could meet the requirements for IM of UN Test Series 7c(ii). Propellant deflagrabillity depends on burning rate at performance in the results of the present.

  • Accelerated aging test for the double base propellant was carried out at three different temperatures (60, 70, and $75^{\circ}C$) for over a year. To evaluate the aging characteristics of the double base propellant, the stabilizer contents and thermal decomposition kinetics were analyzed by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and AKTS-Thermokinetics software. As a result, stabilizer contents in the double base propellant gradually decreased according to the aging temperature and aging duration. The consumption rate of 2-NDPA in the accelerated aged propellants showed that it was two times faster at $75^{\circ}C$ in compared with ther rate at $70^{\circ}C$. These experimental values were simulated by the SB kinetic model, and it was shown that the two-step model with constant reaction orders n1=1 and n2=0 best describes the process of the stabilizer depletion for the double base propellant.

  • The solid propellants have been most widely used for the military rockets or missiles all over the world and the efforts have been focused on the enhancement of propellant performance up to 1980s. lately in company with the distinguished development in the intelligence and communication technology, the more accurate guidance as well as maneuverability has been required in the military weapon system. To meet the requirements such as a high maneuverability, insensitiveness, or stealth of missile, the researches have been doing to develop the solid propellants which have a quality of ultra-fast burning rate, insensitiveness, low signature or the like.

  • Hypergolic propellants have been widely used for space propulsion systems based their long-term storability and high ignition reliability. Since conventional hypergolic propellants are highly toxic and carcinogenic, handling and operating costs are significant. To overcome the drawbacks, numerous studies have been actively performed to develope new hypergolic propellants, ensuring that the combinations are high performance, low toxicity and low environmental impact. In the present study, a comprehensive survey was conducted to summarize the research and development of green hypergolic propellants involving hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid, and ionic liquids.
