Effects of a Virtual Reality Simulation and a Blended Simulation of Care for Pediatric Patient with Asthma (천식 아동 간호에 대한 가상현실 시뮬레이션과 블렌디드 시뮬레이션 교육 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a virtual reality simulation and a blended simulation on nursing care for children with asthma through an evaluation of critical thinking, problem-solving processes, and clinical performance in both education groups before and after the educational intervention. Methods: The participants were 48 nursing students. The experimental group (n=22) received a blended simulation, combining a virtual reality simulation and a high-fidelity simulation, while the control group (n=26) received only a virtual reality simulation. Data were collected from February 25 to 28, 2019 and analyzed using SPSS version 25 for Windows. Results: The pretest and posttest results of each group showed statistically significant improvements in critical thinking, problem-solving processes, and clinical performance. In a comparison of the results of the two education groups, the only statistically significant difference was found for critical thinking. Conclusion: Simulation-based education in child nursing has continued to involve high-fidelity simulations that are currently run in many programs. However, incorporating a new type of blended simulation, combining a virtual reality simulation and a high-fidelity simulation, into the nursing curriculum may contribute to the further development of nursing education.

  • A method for modeling and simulation of a satellite system is presented. The characteristics of a typical satellite system is discussed. for high fidelity modeling and simulator development of a satellite, the object-oriented analysis and design methodology is discussed and applied.

Nurse Educators' Experience of Developing and Implementing a High-fidelity Simulation-based Interprofessional Education Module for Medical and Nursing Students

  • Objective: Despite the recommendation of the use of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) in interprofessional education (IPE), there is little known about its work for nursing students. Thus, this study aimed to explore nurse educators' perceptions and experiences in developing and implementing the HFS-based IPE for nursing and medical students. Methods: This study used a case study, using reflective filed notes. Results: Nursing educators perceived HFS as an effective educational approach to engaging nursing and medical students actively in interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP) experiences and in evaluating their actual performance on it. In terms of their perspectives on the elements necessary for effective HFS-based IPE, four themes were identified: collaborative learning, co-facilitating debriefing, leadership commitment and active faculty involvement.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the acquisition and retention effects on diabetes knowledge and academic self-efficacy of patient simulation-based hypoglycemia scenario using a high-fidelity simulator. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest/posttest repeated measures quasi-experimental design determined if nursing simulation using a high-fidelity simulator helps students acquire and retain diabetes knowledge and academic self-efficacy. A total of 101 nursing students from two universities participated in this study, comprising the experimental and control groups. The experimental group (n=52) at a university in S city comprised participants in an adult nursing class, nursing practicum, and simulation education. The control group (n=49) at a university in C city participated in an adult nursing class and nursing practicum without simulation education. Results: The experimental group had statistically significant group-time interaction effects on diabetes knowledge (p=.044) and self-confidence (p<.001) of academic self-efficacy compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results indicated that the patient simulation-based hypoglycemia scenario using a high-fidelity simulator applied to nursing education is useful in encouraging nursing students to engage in strategies with acquisition and retention effects, enhancing their diabetes knowledge and self-confidence of academic self-efficacy. Therefore, educators should use simulation programs effectively with nursing classes and practicum to enhance the effects of nursing competencies.

The Validity and Reliability of a Korean Version of the Satisfaction with Simulation Experience Scale for Evaluating Satisfaction with High-Fidelity Simulation Education for Nursing Students (간호대학생의 고성능 인체 환자 모형 시뮬레이션 교육 평가를 위한 한국판 시뮬레이션 만족도 경험 도구의 타당도와 신뢰도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the Satisfaction with Simulation Experience (SSE) scale for evaluating high-fidelity simulation education for nursing students. Participants were 174 nursing students, seniors enrolled in two colleges in two different regions. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS / WIN 22.0 and tested for construct validity (factor analysis, group comparison test) and reliability (internal consistency). Factor analysis revealed 17 items and 3 factors explaining 71.581% of the variance. Group comparisons showed that satisfaction with simulation training differed significantly across satisfaction to a college life and school record. Internal consistency reliability for all items was .945. For each sub-domain, the reliability coefficient was .929 for 'Debrief', .908 for 'Clinical learning and reflection', and .860 for 'Clinical reasoning'. Nursing students' mean satisfaction with simulation using the high-fidelity simulator was 3.92. Results of this study are expected to be used for evaluating the satisfaction of nursing college students receiving high-fidelity simulation education, and to serve as groundwork for the development and application of nursing simulation education.

Effects of Nursing Education using a High-fidelity Patient Simulator on Self-directed Learning Competency, Clinical Knowledge, and Problem-solving Ability among Nursing Students (High-fidelity Patient Simulator를 활용한 간호교육이 간호학생의 자기주도학습역량, 임상수행지식 및 문제해결력에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effects of simulation-based nursing education (for the care of congestive heart failure patients) on self-directed learning competency, clinical knowledge and problem-solving ability among nursing students. Methods: A one-group, pre-post design was utilized with 87 nursing students as the subjects. The scenario of simulation-based nursing education was created using a high-fidelity patient stimulator, and consisted of four states ((1) assessment, (2) reviewing laboratory data and administering medications and treatments, (3) managing increased dyspnea and decreased urine output, and (4) handling the "getting better" state). The simulation-based nursing education included orientation, team-based learning, team-based practice, and debriefing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients and paired t-tests. Results: The scores on the factors for self-directed learning competency (t=-2.57, p= .011), clinical knowledge (t=-6.85, p<.001), and problem-solving ability (t=-3.01, p= .003) increased significantly after the education intervention. Conclusion: Simulation-based nursing education is useful in improving self-directed learning competency, clinical knowledge, and problem-solving ability in nursing students.

Validation of a Korean version of the satisfaction with simulation experience scale for paramedic students (응급구조학과 학생 대상 한국판 시뮬레이션 경험 만족도 도구의 타당도 검증)

  • Purpose: This study aims to assess the reliability and validity of a Korean version of the satisfaction with simulation experience (SSE) scale for low-, medium-, and high-fidelity simulations among paramedic students. Methods: Exploratory factor analysis with varimax rotation was used to determine construct validity. Cronbach's alpha was calculated to assess internal consistency reliability. Results: Cronbach's alpha for the overall scale was .841. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a three-factor structure composed of clinical learning, clinical reasoning and debriefing and reflection. Each of the subscales had high internal consistency, with Cronbach's alphas of .852, .790 and .913, respectively. With respect to year, freshmen scored the highest on the SSE scale. With respect to type of simulation, the medium-fidelity group reported the highest satisfaction. Generally, the students were satisfied with debriefing and reflection. Conclusion: The Korean version of the SSE scale was shown to be a reliable and valid instrument for assessing satisfaction with simulation learning in paramedic students.

  • KEPCO Research Center is carrying out a simulator(full scope replica type) development project for two nuclear power plants(Kori-2, Younggwang-3,4) and one fossil power plant(Poryong-3,4). In this project, we aim not only the installation of high performance simulators at the power plant sites but also the realization of self reliance of power plant simulation technology in Korea. In the course of preparing procurement specification for the 3 simulators, the present status of power plant simulation technology has been surveyed and is presented in this paper. The fidelity of simulation and the automation of simulation model production has been greatly improved due to the ever increasing computing power of today's workstations. The need and importance of the application of high fidelity simulators to the operator training is refocused since the accident at TMI Nuclear Power Plant, U.S.A.

Effects of Simulation-based Education on Communication Skill and Clinical Competence in Maternity Nursing Practicum

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of simulation-based education on communication skill and clinical competence in maternity nursing practicum. Methods: This study used a non-equivalent control pretest-posttest design. The simulation-based education in maternity nursing practicum consisted of two clinical situation scenarios pertaining to patients with normal and high-risk deliveries. The control group consisted of 35 students in 2010 and the experimental group consisted of 35 students in 2009. The experimental group was given the simulation-based education using a high-fidelity patient simulator over 3 sessions, whereas the control group was given a conventional pre-clinical practice orientation before maternity nursing clinical practicum. Data were collected using a questionnaire, which included questions to assess communication skill and clinical competence. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Members of the experimental group, who received the simulation-based education, showed significantly higher communication skill and clinical competence scores than the control group (t=-2.39, p = .020; t=-2.71, p = .009). Conclusion: The simulation-based education in maternity nursing practicum is effective in promoting communication skill and clinical competence. With application of diverse clinical situation scenarios, it is recommended to develop and apply simulation-based education using a high-fidelity simulator in the area of maternity nursing.

Improved VFM Method for High Accuracy Flight Simulation (고정밀 비행 시뮬레이션을 위한 개선 VFM 기법 연구)

  • Recent progress in analysis and flight simulation methods enables wider use of a virtual certification and reduces number of certification flight tests. Aerodynamic database (AeroDB) is one of the most important components for the flight simulation. It is composed of aerodynamic coefficients at a range of flight conditions and control deflections. This paper proposes and efficient method for construction of AeroDB that combines Gaussian Process based Variable Fidelity Modeling with adaptive sampling algorithm. A case study of virtual certification of a F-16 fighter is presented. Four AeroDB were constructed using different number and distribution of high-fidelity data points. The constructed database is then used to simulate gliding, short pitch, and roll response. Compliance with certification regulations is then checked. The case study demonstrates that the proposed method can significantly reduce number of high-fidelity data points while maintaining high accuracy of the simulation.
