  • This paper describes computer simulation program of high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). The HEMP is produced by the gamma rays form high-altitude nuclear explosion. The gamma rays generate a current of compton electron that leads to the production of electromagnetic fields. In case of high altitude nuclear burst, the electrical fields at the earth's surface are strong enough to be damaged for electrical and electronic device over a very much larger area. Therefore, national infrastructure will be serious damage such as power grid and communication network. In this paper introduce simulation program for calculation of HEMP and present to simulation study results of high altitude nuclear explosion experiment from U.S. and U.S.S.R.

  • High-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) is generated from a nuclear burst at high altitudes above the Earth, the electromagnetic fields reach the ground nearly simultaneously with regard to the operation time of systems. The aim of this analysis is to inquire about HEMP characteristics and to analyze about effect in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Specifically, HEMP characteristics are classified field sources, spatial coverage, time domain behavior, frequency spectrum and field intensities in this study. Bits error rate (BER) of the receiver with the software simulation is confirmed for the HEMP effect. Q-factor made a difference about interference duration by transfer characteristics of system. When Q factor is smaller, the recovery time from HEMP interference is short. To the contrary, if the Q factor is larger, the recovery duration is lasted longer by 300-600%.

  • Although High-altitude electromagnetic pulse(HEMP) protection filter meets the requirements of pulsed current injection(PCI) acceptance test, the equipment under test which has low electromagnetic susceptibility level can be damaged during PCI verification test that is performed on operating condition of equipment. This paper proposed the HEMP effect analysis method using comparison of norms between residual current of HEMP filter and transient electromagnetic conducted susceptibility criteria of equipment, as an alternative method under the condition that performing PCI verification test is limited in HEMP hardened facilities. PCI acceptance test of HEMP filter, transient electromagnetic conducted susceptibility test, and PCI verification test are performed and test results are analyzed.

  • In this study, to evaluate the High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse(HEMP) protection performance of UHPC/CNT composites by the content of Carbon nanotubes(CNTs), Electromagnetic Shielding Effectiveness(SE) test was performed based on MIL-STD-188-125-1. And the results were verified by applying the Antenna theory. In the case of UHPC with a thickness of 200 mm mixed with 1 % CNT of cement weight, the SE was 28.98 dB at 10 kHz and 45.94 dB at 1 GHz. Then the Scabbing limit thickness for bullet proof was computed based on the result of compressive strength test which was 170 MPa, and it was examined whether it satisfied the HEMP protection criteria. As a result, the required HEMP shielding criteria were satisfied in all frequency ranges as well as the scabbing limit thickness was reduced by up to 43 % compared with that of ordinary concrete.

  • This paper gives a electromagnetic coupling mechanism of the high altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) into large- scale underground multilayer structures using analytic and numerical methods. The modeling methods are firstly addressed to the HEMP source which can be generated by intentional nuclear explosion. The instantaneous and intense electromagnetic pulse of the HEMP source is concerned from DC to 100 MHz band, because the power spectrum of the HEMP is rapidly decreased under -30 dB over the 100 MHz band. Through this range, a penetrated electric field distribution is computed within the large-scale underground multilayer structures. As a result, the penetrated electric field intensities at 0.1 and 1 MHz are about 10 and 5 kV/m, respectively. Therefore, additional shielding techniques are introduced to protect buried structures within the large-scale underground structures such as high-lossy material and filtering structures (wire screen).

  • We herein investigate the E1 pulse for evaluating the conducted performance of transmission lines connected to the electromagnetic pulse protection facilities against a conducted high-altitude electromagnetic pulse threat exposed to an external electromagnetic environment. The existing E1 pulse generator uses the Marx generator high-voltage step-up method; however, in this research, we used the Tesla transformer method to easily change the broadband output voltage(30 to 350 kV). We also analyzed the controller, power supply, high-voltage booster, and pulse-shaping device. The E1 pulse performance using the Tesla transformer was predicted through simulations and validated by measurements.

  • The high-altitude electromagnetic pulse(HEMP) generated by a high-altitude nuclear explosion. This paper presents the comparison of electric field penetration in Bell laboratories and IEC 61000-2-9 standard when HEMP source penetrates through Naval Warship conducted coupling path and radiated coupling path. Also we analyze the effects of two kinds of coupling and propose Protective measures. Simulation results confirm IEC 61000-2-9 standard is more strict than the Bell Laboratories standard except for a lower frequency band, so we proposed IEC 61000-2-9 standard as a Naval HEMP standard. Finally, we offer the protective measures such as the shielding coating, Honeycomb ventilation, TVS in order to meet the military criteria.

  • The system which is exposed in the impact range of High-altitude Electromagnetic Pulse(HEMP) may get serious damage because HEMP has a very large electric field value, a very fast rise-time, and so on. Electromagnetic analysis should be performed for signals coupled to the opening or cables of the system prior to derive the system design specifications in order to protect the system against HEMP adequately. In this paper, we analyzed the HEMP coupled signals for the coaxial cable which is generally used to transmit and receive video or RF signals and compared the coupled signal of the one wire with that of the inner conductor of a coaxial cable to confirm the decreased effect of HEMP by the shield. The coaxial cable is analyzed by the external and internal region of the shield separately. For the external region of the coaxial cable, general scattered equation was applied to calculate currents on the surface of the shield and for internal region of the coaxial cable, chain matrix algorithm is used. To verify this paper the analyzed results were compared the results of the existing paper and the two results have good agreements.

  • In this paper, a formulation for obliquely incident electromagnetic wave has been presented for an analysis of highpower electromagnetic pulse penetration into multilayered dispersive media. Based on generalized models of measured dielectric constants and propagation channels reflecting the Earth's general features, the propagation phenomenon of the obliquely incident early-time(E1) high altitude electromagnetic pulse(HEMP) is analyzed. In addition, the polarization and critical angle are also considered. It is found that the total reflection occurs at an incident angle of about 38 degrees at the soil-rock interface, and that the parallel-polarized E1 HEMP penetrates better than the perpendicular-polarized one. The peak level of the penetrating electric field is found to be 5.6 kV/m at normal incidence, regardless of the type of polarization, and E1 HEMP is greatly reduced near the critical angle. Moreover, the penetrating E1 HEMP is analyzed as a variation of moisture content and depth of materials, resulting E1 HEMP could be useful in determining the levels of shielding required for buried facilities.

  • The high-altitude electromagnetic pulse(HEMP) conducted environment and the HEMP radiated environment are established as the consequences of a high-altitude nuclear explosion. The IEC 61000-2-10, the international standard, defines the HEMP conducted environment. The IEC 61000-5-5 defines how protective devices for conducted disturbance proposed for HEMP protection shall be specified. The IEC 61000-4-24 deals with methods for testing protective devices for HEMP conducted disturbance. The IEC 61000-4-24:1997 mainly describes the measurement method of small protective components. However, it does not provide the measurement method for a combination filter of a protective component and a filter which is widely used in recent. It is important to consider the characteristic of the measurement setup parameters like thickness and length of the cable and its height above ground plane etc. in establishing measurement setup because HEMP conducted disturbances include the frequency spectrum below 50 MHz. This paper deals with the optimized measurement method, considering the frequency spectrum of HEMP conducted disturbance, current waveform, and analyzing the effects of cables existing in the measurement setup.
