The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal impact of the engagement of private tutoring on student achievement and the influence of the engagement of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring by applying hierarchical linear growth modeling technique on the KELS (Korean Education Longitudinal Study) data. For the analysis, we used KELS data including the score of Mathematics achievement from 2005 to 2007 in order to get useful variables like whether or not to engage private tutoring, weekly time and monthly cost of private tutoring, the experience of gifted education, gender, prior achievement of 6th grade, parents' monthly income, internal motivation and self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 4,435 7th graders from Korean middle schools who were included in the KELS and have the data available to a significant dataset having no missing values include. The result suggest that the private tutoring experience predicted students' high Mathematics achievement and the interaction between grade and private tutoring time and cost has negative impact on the mathematics achievement. In contrast, it was found that the experience of gifted education has negative impact on the growth of mathematics achievement, but positive impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement. In other words, the experience of gifted education shows affirmative impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement indirectly. On the basis of this results, we discussed deeply the effect of private tutoring on the Mathematics achievement and the influence and its meaning of the experience of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring.

The purpose of this study is to examine the students' and teachers' perception about the roles and qualifications of teacher librarians. For this purpose, data were collected through survey from students and teachers at secondary schools and the data were analyzed by semantic network analysis. The results of the research are as follows: First, students usually perceived the role of teacher librarians as 'library management', and teachers did as 'reading education'. Second, among the roles of teacher librarians, it was confirmed that students' and teachers' perceptions of 'information literacy instruction and library instruction' were very weak. Third, while the students' perception of the role of a teacher librarian as a 'teaching collaborator' such as 'teaching and learning support' and 'library assisted instruction and collaborative instruction' was weak, teachers recognized the role of teacher librarians as 'teaching collaborators'. Fourth, students and teachers perceived high levels of 'information service', which consists of 'book recommendation and guide activities'. Finally, it was investigated that 'professionalism' plays a central role in the students' and teachers' perception about the qualities of teacher librarians. These results can be used to establish the role of teacher librarians, develop response strategies for students and teachers, and improve their awareness.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual condition of commercial use of housing site in residential development complexes, and to derive effective future development plan by analyzing the influence of penetrating factors of commercial use. The foJlowing are the results of the analysis. First, characteristics of roads showed that the wider the widths of roads adjoining individual lots have more influences on commercial use penetration. This means that non-residential facilities tend to be located on regions where frequencies of uses are high, preferring regions having good transportation accessibility. Second, characteristics of adjacent usage showed that the distances of common housing, neighborhood facilities, schools to single-detached residential units acted as a factor for higher penetration ratio of commercial use when they were closer.ors an opposite, it showed as distances to parks were further, the penetration ratio were higher. This can be inferred that the condition of detached houses located closer to parks have pleasure environment, and act as a factor preventing commercial use penetration. Third, the official land price presents as a form of quality, as the analysis showed that the higher official land price, the more it acts as a factor increasing the penetration ratio of commercial use.

This study aims to analyze the spatial accessibilities to urban greens considering the catchment areas of urban parks to improve those areas with lower spatial accessibility in the neighborhood units. Nam-gu in Daegu was selected as the study area. In the results of the analysis of 16 existing parks, Daemyung6-dong and Daemyung5-dong had high ratios of green service area to administrative district, with values of 94.4% and 92.3%, respectively. Low ratios of green service area(vulnerable area of green service) were recorded in Icheondong(1.6%) and Daemyung10-dong(24.1%). However, the ratio of Icheondong may increase by 88.6%, when the 12 unexecuted urban parks are established. The ratio of Daemyung10-dong can also increase up to 40.1% by establishing green spaces in public institutions such as government offices and schools. This study suggests possibilities to improve the spatial accessibilities to urban parks and indicates the policies required for enhancing the even distribution of green spaces.
This study was to investigate the types of middle school students’ conceptual change on electrolyte and ion. Data were collected by pre- and post- exams of 9th grade students’ conceptions of electrolyte and ion, and by semi-structured interviews with nine students served as case representatives who participated in the study. All interviews were transcribed, analyzed and classified by conceptual change according to the responses of the students. The results are as follows: First, students’ ion conceptual change was classified into four types; simple conception to sophisticated conception, incomplete conception to scientific conception, misconception to confused conception, and misconception to misconception. Most students had difficulty in understanding of the concepts of ion in pre- and post-class, and they failed to distinguish between atom and subatomic particles precisely. Second, students’ conceptual change of electrolyte was also classified into the following four types; partially scientific conception to sophisticated conception, misconception to partial misconception, incomplete conception to incomplete conception and misconception to misconception. The study found that students had difficulty distinguishing the difference between electrolytes and nonelectrolytes. Third, students also had difficulty understanding the concepts on particles because they learned the ‘electrolyte and ion’ unit so quickly in the second semester of 9th grade in order to fill in the academic reports for applying high schools. Furthermore, some suggestions were made based on the results for understanding scientific concepts on particles.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the eating behaviors, the self-perception of body images, the hematological indices and the nutrient intake of adolescent female athletes in Incheon. The subjects were 112 female athletes(track and fleld: n=32, target shooting: n=27, fencing n=29, swimming: n=14, badminton: n=10) from middle and high schools in Incheon. This cross-sectional study was conducted by means of a sol(-administered questionnaire. Fasting blood samples were obtained and analyzed for hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), ferritin, serum iron, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC), unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC), total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation (TS). Nutrient intakes obtained by means of the 3 day-recall method were analyzed using the Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis Program. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSS 10.0 program. Most of the female athletes had dietary problems such as eating unbalanced meals, skipping meals, and preferences for processed foods. More than 60% of the female athletes skipped breakfast. As for perception of their body images, track and field athletes in particular, controlled their weights significantly better than the other athletes (p<0.05). With regard to their physical exertion during exercise, 56.3% of the swimmers and 31.3% of the track and field athletes answered “very hard”, which was a significant difference (p< 0.001). More than 80% of the female athletes experienced vertigo during exercise (p< 0.01). Also more than 50% of the female athletes, with the exception of the badminton players, had experienced irregular menstruation (p<0.05). The average serum iron levels (p<0.05), the serum ferritin levels (p<0.05) and TS (p<0.05) of the track and field athletes was significantly lower as compared to that of the other athletes. The nutrient intakes of the female athletes, with the exception of Vitamin B$_{6}$, niacin and phosphorus were lower than the Korean Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA). In particular, the calcium and iron intakes of the female athletes were under 50% of the Korean RDA. Therefore, proper nutritional education and supplementation are required for female athletes to encourage desirable eating habits, as well as to improve their nutritional status and exercise performances.s.
Objectives: This study was designed to provide basic information for smoking prevention education for middle school students by examining their knowledge and attitudes toward smoking. Method: A survey was conducted in this study on 1.250 students from 12 middle schools in the six educational bureaus in the Busan region. Results from the preliminary survey showed that the reliability of the instruments for knowledge and attitudes toward smoking were 0.84 and 0.86. respectively. The data for this study were collected for 20 days from Dec. 1 to 20, 2000, and then statistically analyzed with the SAS program using frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. and two-way ANOVA. Results: (1) The highest frequency of responses found that both male and female students did not smoke at all. Among 170 students who had experiences of smoking, 66.5% reported they tried smoking because of curiosity, and 38.2% reported they first smoked during the 2nd grade of middle school and 1.2% during 4th grade of primary school. (2) In scores on smoking knowledge, the item with the highest score in both male and female students was one that they had no smoking experiences et al. followed by smoking experiences in the past and experiences of regular smoking. (3) In scores on attitude toward smoking, both male and female students were scored as the highest at the item that they had no smoking experiences et all. followed by the item that they smoked in the past and that they experienced regular smoking. (4) There was no significant correlation between knowledge and attitude toward smoking among the whole subjects (r=0.09. P=0.00). With regard to regular smoking experiences among the male and female students at the 3rd grade of middle school. there was a relatively high correlation between knowledge and attitude toward smoking among them (r=0.57. P=0.00: r=0.56. P=0.01). Conclusion: Students who had never smoked or smoked only in the past need smoking prevention education consistently. Particularly, for those who were regular smokers, not only individualized but also organized in small size groups, they need an intensive educational program on the basis of counseling to reduce smoking and to put in practice smoking cessation.

Purpose : The present study attempted to consider the degree of consciousness of economic ethics in nursing students and the factors affecting these perceptions. Method : A survey was conducted to a total of 874 nursing students from the freshmen and seniors of 11 depts of nursing science nationwide selected by convenience sampling (one for each province, and as for Gangwon-do, two schools were selected from Yeongdong area and Yeongseo area ; 13 male students were excluded). A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on their demographic characteristics and economic ethical perceptions. Collected data were analyzed using the SAS V8.1 statistical package. Result : (1) The score for the economic ethical consciousness of the subjects was $36.76{\pm}10.20$. As for each sub-categories, the score for industry was $7.67{\pm}2.77$; thrift, $7.42{\pm}2.37$; cooperation, $7.41{\pm}2.21$; occupational consciousness, $7.18{\pm}2.20$; and, for consumption, $7.02{\pm}1.90$. The score for the consciousness of consumption was the lowest. (2) Among the demographic characteristics of the subjects, age was found to have a statistically significant positive relation to the consciousness of economic ethics(r=.13, p<.001). The next significant factor was grade: seniors seemed to have a higher economic consciousness in all the sub-categories than freshmen(t=-4.32, p<.001). The number of in-home family has a statistically significant negative correlation with economic attitudes(r=-.15, p<.001). In addition, their economic ethical perceptions were significantly higher with no religion (t=2.14, p<.05); have an unemployed father (t=2.78, p<.05); have credit cards under their own names (t=3.04, p<.05); have ever had overdue card bills (t=4.25, p<.001); have ever had part time job(t=1.74, p<.1) and when they don't live with their parents (t=-2.01, p<.05). 3) A multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the influential power of the factors affecting the consciousness of economic ethics of the subjects. The factors had more influence on the economic attitudes of the seniors than those of freshmen; in those who having credit cards under their own names than under others; and, in those who have ever experienced credit default than those haven't. Though these factors raised average 3.0 points of economic consciousness, their expository power for the consciousness were low. Conclusion : The nursing students had medium-high consciousness of economic ethics and they seemed to have low consciousness of the proper consumption practices. Their actual life experiences had an influence on their economic attitudes. Therefore, practical programs on economic knowledge should be developed and taught to students systematically at school so that they could have sound consciousness of economic ethics and appropriate knowledge closely related with their real life.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate some variables, such as learner's cognitive characteristics and a training-program emphasized proportional logic, in proportional reasoning development. Seven hundred and ninety students in junior high schools were enrolled as subjects for the study which investigated learner's cognitive characteristics in proportional reasoning development and asked to perform tests of logical thinking, card sorting, planning, mental capacity, cognitive style, brain lateralization, information processing pattern and scientific reasoning. In addition, one hundred and thirty-three students who failed to solve proportional thinking items were administered a training program which has been applied to improve the subjects' proportional reasoning skills. The results showed a significant higher correlation between subjects' performance score on proportional thinking test, and their age and scores on scientific reasoning test, mental capacity, information processing test and perseveration errors on card sorting test. Also, the training program applied in this study showed an effective result in developing subjects' proportional reasoning skills. Further, this study may serve as a suggestion in the efforts to investigate factors of proportional thinking development and a contribution for the future research in other logical thinking development.

This paper reviews and analyzes the conceptions of science achievement in the United States and Korean reform documents, including those on science content standards(NSES, Porject 2061, and Korean 7th science curriculum), performance standards(New Standards, and Survey of Ecucational Achievement in Korean Elementary and Secondary Schools), and large-scale assessment framworks(1996 NAEP, TIMSS, The National Assessment of Science Inqury Abilities, The National Assessment of Science Knowledge, and The National Assessment of Affective Characteristics related to Science). The analysis of these documents indicates that there is an overall agreement on the conceptions of science achievement. The documents consistently emphasize high achievement in terms of knowledge and abilities in scientific, technological, social, and environmental perspectives. In addition, these documents define science achievement at different developmental levels and at certain depths of knowledge and abilities for all students. Despite the overall agreement, there are also noticeable variations among the documents because of different contexts and purposes. There is a difference in the balance of representations or emphases among content and process standards in the documents. The conceptions of science achievement in the Korean documents are not as comprehensive or inclusive as those in the United States documents. There is no representation of the mathematical world, the nature of science, historical perspectives, unifying concepts, or scientific communication. From these results, two conclusions are drawn. First, more coherent conceptions of science achievement are needed for common understanding among educators and the public. Second, efforts are needed for developing more comprehensive and inclusive conceptions of science achievement in Korea.
