  • Currently a large number of high rise building projects are under plan and a mega foundation system to support this high load with safety is requiring. The foundation of a highrise building is displaced by the building load, which influence the behavior of a super structure in reverse. In this aspect, the structural interaction analysis between a foundation and a super structure is necessary. In this study, the relationship of a superstructure of building and a foundation has been reviewed, considering the tendency of design from a capacity driven design to a performance design. Two different case studies have been introduced to help understand this relationship in more specific, the first case is the high rise building founded on a mat system on rock and the second is that on large diameter bored piles on soft ground condition.

  • This paper introduces detailed three-dimensional numerical analyses on a bored pile foundation for a high-rise building. A static load test was performed on a test pile and a numerical model of a single pile, which was calibrated by comparing it with the test result. The detailed numerical analysis was then conducted on the entire high-rise building foundation. Further study focused on soil pressures under the base slab of a piled raft foundation. Total seven cases with different pile numbers and raft-soil contact conditions were investigated. The design criteria of a foundation, especially settlement requirement were satisfied even for the cases with fewer piles under considerable soil pressure beneath the base slab. The bending moment for the structural design of the base slab was reduced by incorporating soil pressures beneath the base slab along with bored piles. Through the comparative studies, it was found that a more efficient design can be achieved by considering the soil pressure beneath the slab.

  • This paper describes the possibility of the raft thickness reduction for mega foundations system of super high-rise buildings through a case study on domestic and foreign super high-rise buildings. In case of super high-rise buildings, the size of foundations, especially raft becomes wider and deeper because of heavy upper load. It is difficult to pour concrete of this kind of mega foundation, and cracks by hydration heat could happen. Therefore, there are several ways to reduce the raft thickness of mega foundations. Piled-raft could be the one because moment and shear load that the raft subjects on by soil reaction are lower. The effect of the piled-raft foundation on the raft thickness reduction could be confirmed by comparison of super high-rise buildings with pile, piled-raft and mat foundation. Furthermore, it was showed that the raft thickness could be more reduced by locating piles right under the vertical members of super structures.

  • The bi-directional high pressure pile load test(BDH PLT) which is a kind of pile load tests was conducted to find out a reasonable design procedure of large-diameter drilled shafts of large-size building structures. The behaviors of bearing capacity and settlement of the large-diameter drilled shafts were analyzed and the results obtained from BDH PLT were also compared with those obtained from the equations suggested in the specification. In case of the reasonable design procedure adopted, the construction cost could be saved at least 15 ~ 28%. It could be concluded that BDH PLT should be needed for the foundation construction cost reduction of the high-rise building structures.

  • Types of foundation of high rise buildings are primarily determined by loads transmitted from super structure, soil bearing capacity and available construction technology. The usd of deep foundation cannot be justified due to the fact that rock of enough bearing capacity is not found down until 90 ~ 100m. When a concentration of high soil pressure must be distributed over the entire building area, when small soft soil areas must be bridged, and when compressible strata are located at a shallow depth, mat foundation may be useful in order to have settlement and differential settlement of variable soils be minimized. The concept of mat foundation will also demonstrate some difficulities of applications if the load bearing demand directly carried down to the load -bearing strata exceeds the load -bearing capacity. This paper introduces both the analysis and design of mat type foundation for high rise buildings as well as the methodology of modelling of the soil foundation, especially, engineered to redistribute the stress exceeding the soil bearing capadity. This process will result in the wid spread of stresses over the entire building foundation.

  • Recently, many high rise buildings is planning and under construction over the world. The drilled shafts as a foundation of high rise buildings are often adopted fur the purpose of construction safety and construction cost effectiveness. It is common that the capacity of drilled shafts is beyond conventional conception. The reasonable design and quality assurance for the drilled shaft as foundation of high rise building become much more important since the drilled shafts should bear much higher working load. This paper reviews state of the art of the design and quality assurance for the drilled shafts as foundation of high rise buildings. And also some related suggestions are given in this paper.

  • Modern city have had a lot of high-rise building in high standards and multi-level performance. Using of city space reach better stages by using integration. These skyscraper have increased working load on ground. that building is efficiently designed for that soil capacity is well applied. With material side, big size pile, high strength concrete and high strength steel is used for that getting enough lobby space and resisting load increased of high-rise building. limit load test and load transmitted test can make soil capacity optimized. By the way, method of measuring pile capacity is more advanced and bigger. pile type applied by high rise building have underground excavation space, also reflect regional soil property and have some fact reviewed. A lot of high rise building recently is built as land mark in Seoul, Busan and Incheon. about method of measuring capacity of foundation pile, example of construction field is compared and reviewed.

  • A 151 storey super high-rise building located in an area of reclaimed land constructed over soft marine clay in Songdo, Korea is currently under design. This paper describes the design process of the foundation system of the supertall tower, which is required to support the large building vertical and lateral loads and to restrain the horizontal displacement due to wind and seismic forces. The behaviour of the foundation system due to these loads and foundation stiffness influence the design of the building super structure, displacement of the tower, as well as the raft foundation design. Therefore, the design takes in account the interactions between soil, foundation and super structure, so as to achieve a safe and efficient building performance. The site lies entirely within an area of reclamation underlain by up to 20m of soft to firm marine silty clay, which overlies residual soil and a profile of weathered rock. The nature of the foundation rock materials are highly complex and are interpreted as possible roof pendant metamorphic rocks, which within about 50m from the surface have been affected by weathering which has reduced their strength. The presence of closely spaced joints, sheared and crushed zones within the rock has resulted in deeper areas of weathering of over 80m present within the building footprint. The foundation design process described includes the initial stages of geotechnical site characterization using the results of investigation boreholes and geotechnical parameter selection, and a series of detailed two- and three-dimensional numerical analysis for the Tower foundation comprising over 172 bored piles of varying length. The effect of the overall foundation stiffness and rotation under wind and seismic load is also discussed since the foundation rotation has a direct impact on the overall displacement of the tower.

  • Hong Kong is a renowned small city with densely placed skyscrapers. It is no surprise that heavy duty or even mega foundations are built over the years to support these structures. To cope with the fast construction pace, several heavy deep foundation types have been widely adopted with some prescribed design rules. This Paper has selected two commonly adopted but distinctive foundation types, namely large diameter bored piles and percussive steel H-piles to illustrate the special design and construction considerations related to these pile types in related to local context. The supervision requirement in related to foundation works for which again may be unique in Hong Kong will also be highlighted. A case history is also discussed in the later part of the Paper to illustrate the application of one of these foundations and to highlight the importance of considering foundation design and basement excavation method in a holistic manner.
