  • Ultra high-quality and ultra high-resolution omnidirectional 360-degree video streaming is needed to provide immersive media through head-mounted display(HMD) in virtual reality environment, which requires high bandwidth and computational complexity. One of the approaches avoiding these problems is to apply viewport-dependent selective streaming using tile-based segmentation method. This paper presents a performance analysis of viewport-dependent tiled streaming on 16K ultra high-quality 360-degree videos and 4K 360-degree videos which are widely used. Experimental results showed 42.47% of bjotegaard delta rate(BD-rate) saving on 16K ultra high-quality 360-degree video tiled streaming compared to viewport-independent streaming while 4K 360-degree video showed 26.41% of BD-rate saving. Therefore, this paper verified that tiled streaming is more efficient on ultra-high quality video.

  • CCTV video recording system is recognized as evidence value of video data, and is widely used in real life for the purpose of security of facilities or security control, and it is developing in order to process high-resolution and high-capacity data in real time through network. However, there is no description of redundancy to prevent the loss of image data due to defects of unexpected equipment or external attack, and even if the redundancy is implemented, a high-capacity video stream is transmitted through the network, network overload can not avoided. In this paper, we propose and verify a failover method based on rules that can operate the redundancy scheme without inducing network overload in CCTV network video recording environment.

  • System for three degrees of freedom plus (3DoF+) and 6DoF requires multi-view high resolution 360 video transmission to provide user viewport adaptive 360 video streaming. In this paper, we implement 3DoF+ 360 video compression system which removes the redundancy between multi-view videos and merges the residual into one video to provide high quality 360 video corresponding to an user's head movement efficiently. Implementations about 3D warping based redundancy removal method between 3DoF+ 360 videos and residual extraction and merger are explained in this paper. With the proposed system, 20.14% of BD-rate reduction in maximum is shown compared to traditional high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) based system.

  • The capability of real-time observation in TEM is quite useful to study dynamic phenomena of materials in a certain variable ambience. In performing the experiment, the choice of video recording program is an important factor to obtain high quality of movie streaming. Window Movie Maker (WMM) is generally recommended as a default video recording program if one uses "DV Capture" function in DigitalMicrograph$^{TM}$ (DM) software. However, the image quality does not often satisfy the condition for high-resolution microscopic analysis since the severe information loss in the final result occurs during the conversion process. As a good candidate to overcome this problem, Virtual-Dub is highly recommended since the information loss can be minimized through the streaming process. In this report, we demonstrated how useful VirtualDub works in a high-resolution movie recording. Quantitative comparison of the information quality between the images recorded by each software, WMM and VirtualDub, was carried out based on histogram analysis. As a result, the image recorded by VirtualDub was improved ~13% in brightness and ~122% in contrast compared with the image obtained by WMM at the same imaging condition. Remarkably, the gray gradation (meaning an amount of information) becomes wider up to ~115% than that of the WMM result.

  • This paper presents the design of a broadcasting scenario and system for an 8K-resolution content. Due to an 8K content is four times larger than the 4K content in terms of size, many technologies such as content acquisition, video coding, and transmission are required to deal with it. Therefore, high-quality video and audio for 8K (ultra-high definition television) service is not possible to be transmitted only using the current terrestrial broadcasting system. The proposed broadcasting system divides the 8K content into four 4K contents by area, and each area is hierarchically encoded by Scalable High-efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) into three layers: L0, L1, and L2. Every part of the 8K video content divided into areas and hierarchy is independently treated. These parts are transmitted over heterogeneous networks such as digital broadcasting and broadband networks after going through several processes of generating signal messages, encapsulation, and packetization based on MPEG media transport. We propose three methods of generating streams at the sending entity to merge the divided streams into the original content at the receiving entity. First, we design the composition information, which defines the presentation structure for displays. Second, a descriptor for content synchronization is included in the signal message. Finally, we define the rules for generating "packet_id" among the packet header fields and design the transmission scheduler to acquire the divided streams quickly. We implement the 8K broadcasting system by adapting the proposed methods and show that the 8K-resolution contents are stably received and serviced with a low delay.

  • In this paper, we have proposed the efficient algorithm that can segment the video scene change using a various statistical characteristics obtained from by applying the wavelet transformation for each frames. Our method firstly extracts the histogram features from low frequency subband of wavelet-transformed image and then uses these features to detect the abrupt scene change. Second, it extracts the edge information from applying the mesh method to the high frequency subband of transformed image. We quantify the extracted edge information as the values of variance characteristic of each pixel and use these values to detect the gradual scene change. And we have also proposed an algorithm how extract the proper key frame from segmented video scene. Experiment results show that the proposed method is both very efficient algorithm in segmenting video frames and also is to become the appropriate key frame extraction method.

  • A new-generation video coding standard, named High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), has recently been developed by JCT-VC. This new standard provides a significant improvement in picture quality, especially for high-resolution videos. However, one the most important challenges in HEVC is time complexity. A quadtree-based structure is created for the encoding and decoding processes and the rate-distortion (RD) cost is calculated for all possible dimensions of coding units in the quadtree. This provides a high encoding quality, but also causes computational complexity. We focus on a reduction scheme of the computational complexity and propose a new approach that can terminate the quadtree-based structure early, based on the RD costs of the parent and current levels. Our proposed algorithm is compared with HEVC Test Model version 10.0 software and a previously proposed algorithm. Experimental results show that our algorithm provides a significant time reduction for encoding, with only a small loss in video quality.

  • Recently, High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) has been developed as a new video coding standard mainly focusing on the coding of ultra high definition (UHD) videos as the high resolution and high quality videos are getting more popular. Furthermore, the scalable extension of HEVC is being standardized for more efficient provision of HD and UHD services in the communications-broadcasting convergence environment. In this paper, we propose an improved scalable video coding method of H.264/AVC to achieve high coding efficiency particularly for UHD and HD videos. The basic idea is to allow large block size in H.264/AVC SVC, which results in more efficient inter-layer prediction and syntax elements coding. The experimental results show that it achieves an average 4.53% reduction in BD-rate relative to H.264/AVC SVC.

  • Recently, advanced video coding techniques using segmentation technique have been actively researched as candidates for video coding of MPEG-4 standard. The conventional segmentation techniques are unsuitable for real-time process because they have sequential structure. In this paper, we propose a new image segmentation technique using competitive learning neural network for vector quantization. The proposed segmentation procedure consist of prefiltering, primary and secondary segmentation, and a small region ellimination process. Primary segmentation segments input image in detail. Secondary segmentation merges similar region using a repetitive FSCL(Frequency sensitive competive learning) neural network. In this process, it is possible to segment an image from high resolution to low resolution by adjusting the number of repetition. Finally, small regions are merged into adjacent regions. Experimental results show that the procedure described yields reconstructed images of reasonably acceptable quality at bit rates of 0. 25 - 0.3 bit/pel.
