  • The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is generally considered to be a promising topology for medium-voltage and high-voltage applications. However, in order to apply it to high-power applications, a huge number of switching devices is essential. The numerous switching devices lead to considerable switching losses, high cost and a larger heat sink for each of the switching device. In order to reduce the switching losses of a MMC, this paper analyzes the performance of the conventional discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) method and its efficiency. In addition, it proposes a modified novel DPWM method for advanced switching losses reduction. The novel DPWM scheme includes an additional rotation method for voltage-balancing and power distribution among sub modules (SMs). Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed modulation method in terms of its switching losses reduction capability.

  • In this paper, a novel type auxiliary active edge resonant snubber assisted zero current soft switching pulse modulation Single-Ended Push Pull (SEPP) series load resonant inverter using IGBT power modules is proposed for cost effective consumer high-frequency induction heating (IH) appliances. Its operating principle in steady state is described by using each switching mode's equivalent operating circuits. The new multi resonant high-frequency inverter with series load resonance and edge resonance can regulate its high frequency output power under a condition of a constant frequency zero current soft switching (ZCS) commutation principle on the basis of the asymmetrical pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme. Brand-new consumer IH products using the proposed ZCS-PWM series load resonant SEPP high-frequency inverter using IGBTs is evaluated and discussed as compared with conventional high-frequency inverters on the basis of experimental results. In order to extend ZCS operation ranges under a low power setting PWM as well as to improve efficiency, the high frequency pulse density modulation (PDM) strategy is demonstrated for high frequency multi-resonant inverters. Its practical effectiveness is substantially proved from an application point of view.

  • In this study, the wave profiles and kinematics of highly nonlinear waves at various water depths were calculated using a 2D fully nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT). The NWT was developed based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM) with the potential theory and the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) time marching scheme by 4th-order Runge-Kutta time integration. The spatial variation of intermediate-depth waves along the direction of wave propagation was caused by the unintended generation of 2nd-order free waves, which were originally investigated both theoretically and experimentally by Goda (1998). These free waves were induced by the mismatch between the linear motion of wave maker and nonlinear displacement of water particles adjacent to the maker. When the 2nd-order wave maker motion was applied, the spatial modulation of the waves caused by the free waves was not observed. The respective magnitudes of the nonlinear wave components for various water depths were compared. It was found that the high-order wave components greatly increase as the water depth decreases. The wave kinematics at various locations were calculated and compared with the linear and the Stokes 2nd-order theories.

  • We present a novel bandwidth measurement scheme for multimode optical fibers. Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) radiation was utilized for a source of intrinsically modulated light with a wide modulation bandwidth. In our measurement scheme, the continuous-wave (CW) ASE light that passed through a multimode fiber (MMF) under test was analyzed by the fourth-order power with a high-speed photodetector and an electric spectrum analyzer. The modulation transfer function of the multimode fiber could be directly measured with the photoelectric spectra in the modulation frequency domain. The measurement result of our method was experimentally compared to that of the conventional measurement scheme based on the impulse response measurement. It has been found that our scheme provides a stable measurement means of MMF characterization that is suitable for the field testing due to the simplicity of the system.

  • The utilization techniques for multiple transmit and receive antennas or high capacity modulation schemes are essential to cope with the rapidly increasing demand for realizing more diverse wireless communication services with high rates. However, employing multiple receive antennas at the mobile units seems less practical due at the size and power limitations. Therefore, transmit diversify techniques have been extensively investigated for the downlink transmission to improve the performance In order to overcome the above mentioned problems, we construct a simulation model which combines STC and polarization diversity which scheme is requiring less cost to realize. Multi-level quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) is an attractive modulation scheme for wireless communication due to the high spectral efficiency it provides. Thus, the performance for our scheme is presented when 16QAM modulation techniques are applied. and compared with the former schemes.

  • Multilevel converters are being widely used in medium-voltage high-power applications including motor drive systems, utility power transmission, and distribution systems. Selective harmonic elimination (SHE) is a well-known modulation method to generate high quality output voltage waveforms. This paper presents a new simple practical method for generating a generalized five-level waveform without selected low order harmonics. This method is based on a phase-shifted expression for the SHE problem, which can analytically calculate the exact values of switching angles and the feasible modulation index range for three-level and five-level waveforms. The proposed method automatically determines the number of transitions between levels and generates proper output waveform without solving complex trigonometric equations. Due to the simplicity of the computational burden, the real-time implementation of the proposed algorithm can be performed by a simple processor. Simulation and experiment results verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic modulation classification method for ten digitally modulated baseband signals, such as 2-FSK, 4-FSK, 8-FSK, MSK, BPSK, QPSK, 8-PSK, 16-QAM, 32-QAM, and 64-QAM based on higher order statistics of cyclostationary process. The first order cyclic moments and higher order cyclic cumulants of the signal are used as features of the modulation signals. The proposed method consists of two stages. At the first stage, we classify modulation signals as M-FSK and non-FSK using peaks of the first order cyclic moment. At the next step, we apply the Gaussian mixture model-based classifier to classify non-FSK. Simulation results are demonstrated to evaluate the proposed scheme. The results show high probability of classification even in the presence of frequency and phase offsets.

  • In this paper, we propose new modulation schemes using the conventional CACB (Constant Amplitude Coded Multicode Biorthogonal) modulation with constant amplitude property. Also the proposed modulation schemes supports high transmission data rate by increasing the spectral efficiency, In order to obtain the high spectral efficiency, the $Q^2$AM (Quadrature-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and CA-$Q^2$AM (Constant Amplitude-$Q^2$AM) are used. We explain the simplest combining modulation scheme of CACB and $Q^2$AM (i.e., CACB-$Q^2$AM). However, this modulation scheme cannot support the constant amplitude property. Hence the first CACB-CA-$Q^2$AM (or CACB-CA-$Q^2$AM I) modulation scheme is proposed for the constant amplitude property. In the modulation scheme, the redundant constant amplitude encoding (spectral efficiency decrease) is required. Therefore, the second CACB-CA-$Q^2$AM (or CACB-CA-$Q^2$AM II) modulation scheme is proposed retaining the constant amplitude and the spectral efficiency. Computer simulations show that the proposed CACB-CA-$Q^2$AM II is the efficient modulation scheme.

  • In this work, first, a multiuser detection (MUD) algorithm based on component-level soft interference cancellation and linear minimum mean square error (CLSIC-LMMSE) is proposed, which can enhance the bit error ratio (BER) performance of the traditional SIC-LMMSE-based MUD by mitigating error propagation. Second, for non-binary low density parity check (NB-LDPC) coded high-order modulation systems, when the proposed algorithm is integrated with partial mapping, the receiver with iterative detection and decoding (IDD) achieves not only better BER performance but also significantly computational complexity reduction over the traditional SIC-LMMSE-based IDD scheme. Extrinsic information transfer chart (EXIT) analysis and numerical simulations are both used to support the conclusions.

  • In recent wireless communication systems such as Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) system, to transmit large multimedia data, high order modulations including 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) are adopted. However, performance of the modulation depends on the signal constellation in the same modulation order. Therefore, a symbol error rate (SER) expression of optimal performance is necessary for analyzing the SER performance of various signal constellation. The optimal signal constellation based on error bound has been previously described, but an exact SER expression has not been derived. In this paper, we propose an exact SER expression of optimal signal constellation for 64-ary QAM.
