  • In this paper, we propose the single poly-Si Flash EEPROM device with a new structure which does not need the high voltage switching circuits. The device was designed, fabricated and characterized. From the measurement results, it was found that the program, the erase and the read operations worked properly. The threshold voltage was 3.1 V after the program in which the control gate and the drain were biased with 12 V and 7 V for $100{\mu}S$, respectively. And it was 0.4 V after the erase in which the control gate was grounded and the drain were biased with 11 V for $200{\mu}S$. On the other hand, it was found that the program and the erase speeds were significantly dependent on the capacitive coupling ratio between the control gate and the floating gate. The larger the capacitive coupling ratio, the higher the speeds, but the target the area per cell. The optimum structure of the cell should be chosen with the consideration of the trade-offs.

  • The characteristics and stabilities of phosphatidylcholine liposomes covalently coupled with immunoglobulin fragments prepared by the REV method were investigated by the dynamic light scattering, absorbance and calcein release. Using a sulfhydryl-reactive phospholipid derivative of N-[4$({\rho}-maleimido-phenyl)$ butyl] phosphatidylethanolamine (MPB-PE), Fab' antibody fragments were covalently combined with preformed large unilamellar vesicles (LUV), Coupling ratio was $250\;{\mu}g$ of $Fab'/{\mu}mol$ of phospholipid in vesicles, From dynamic light scattering, it was found that the size of the vesicles increases as the ratio of cholesterol to lipid increases, but that apparently, the size of liposomes was not sensitive to the existence of Fab' fragments. Regardless of inserting Fab' fragments, the absorbance of liposomes decreased as the amounts of bile salt (BS) added. At very low BS concentrations, BS/lipid aggregates would be formed in the outer vesicles monolayer, while, at the high BS concentrations, mixed micelles would be preferred. The vesicles incorporated with Fab' fragments, however, are more resistant to the bile salts than the MPB-PE vesicle are. The absorbance of vacant liposomes and calcein release resulted in that the Fab' vesicles and MPB-PE vesicles by the REV method are very stable, but that those by the sonication method sufferred the significant change of turbidities.

  • For the high reflectance under the ambient light condition, a highly efficient diffractive reflector has been proposed, based on a micro grating structure.[1] This reflector was designed to show highly concentrated distribution of the reflected light to the normal direction of the reflector under specific incident conditions of the light. In order to apply a diffractive reflector to a reflective liquid crystal display, the coupling between the viewing angle characteristics of a liquid crystal (LC) cell and the reflective distribution of the reflector should be considered. Under the optimum configuration confirmed through the analysis of the coupling between a LC cell and a reflector, a reflective vertical alignment (VA) cell with a diffractive reflector shows contrast ratio and brightness much higher than that with a conventional bumpy reflector.

  • Connection of adjacent buildings with stiff links is an efficient approach for seismic pounding mitigation. However, use of highly rigid links might alter the torsional response in asymmetric plans and although this was mentioned in the literature, no quantitative study has been done before to investigate the condition numerically. In this paper, the effect of rigid coupling on the elastic lateral-torsional response of two adjacent one-story column-type buildings has been studied by comparison to uncoupled structures. Three cases are considered, including two similar asymmetric structures, two adjacent asymmetric structures with different dynamic properties and a symmetric system adjacent to an adjacent asymmetric one. After an acceptable validation against the actual earthquake, the traditional random vibration method has been utilized for dynamic analysis under Ideal white noise input. Results demonstrate that rigid coupling may increase or decrease the rotational response, depending on eccentricities, torsional-to-lateral stiffness ratios and relative uncoupled lateral stiffness of adjacent buildings. Results are also discussed for the case of using identical cross section for all columns supporting eachplan. In contrast to symmetric systems, base shear increase in the stiffer building may be avoided when the buildings lateral stiffness ratio is less than 2. However, the eccentricity increases the rotation of the plans for high rotational stiffness of the buildings.

  • An electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) containing a stacked metal-insulator-metal (MIM) and n-well capacitor is proposed. It was fabricated using a 0.18 $\mu$m standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor process. The depletion capacitance of the n-well region was effectively applied without sacrificing the cell-area and control gate coupling ratio. The device performed very similarly to the MIM capacitor cell regardless of the smaller cell area. This is attributed to the high control gate coupling ratio and capacitance. The erase speed of the proposed EEPROM was faster than that of the cell containing the MIM control gate.

  • The computer simulation for the fault current limiting characteristics of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using the magnetic coupling of two coils was performed. The magnetic fluxes generated from two coils were canceled out during a normal time. However, the resistance generation of high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTSC) element after a fault occurrence keeps up the magnetic fluxes of two coils and contributes to the fault current limiting operation. Through the computer simulation for the fault current limiting characteristics based on its electrical equivalent circuit, its operational current and the limiting impedance could be improved by adjusting the inductance ratio between two coils.

  • In this paper, an improved KY converter is presented, which is constructed mainly by one charge pump capacitor and one central-tapped coupling inductor. Besides, a passive clamping snubber is added to this converter to improve the efficiency above half load. As compared to the KY converter, the voltage conversion ratio of the proposed converter is upgraded significantly. In this paper, the basic operating principles and mathematical deductions of the proposed converter are described, along with some experimental results provided to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed converter.

  • The operational characteristics of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using magnetic coupling of coils were investigated. This SFCL consists of a high-Tc superconducting (HTSC) element and two coils with series or parallel connection on the same iron. This SFCL has the merit that the operational current of SFCL can be increased higher than the critical current of the superconducting element by adjusting the inductance ratio between two coils. To confirm its operation, the circuit for the fault simulation was constructed. From the measured voltage and current of the SFCL, it was confirmed that the resistance of HTSC element comprising this SFCL increased more than that of HTSC element's independent operation.

  • In this paper we report the low and high angle diffraction results, and the magnetic and magnetroesistive characteristics of the spin valve multilayer structure prepared by the sputter machine Emerald II in the Balzers Laboratory. The investigated system consists of a ferromagnetic free layer (7 nm NiFe) and a ferromagnetic pinned layer (7 nm NiFe), separated from each other by a nonmagnetic (2.1 nm Cu) spacer. The NiFe pinned layer is fixed by the exchange coupling with an antiferromagnetic layer (10 nm FeMn). For such system the magnetoresistance ratio ΔR/R=3.58%, the interlayer exchange coupling $H_c=6.4$ Oe and the field sensitivity 1.15%/Oe were otained.

  • In this paper, a microstructured, hexagonal-shaped dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed. The proposed structure has specific optical properties to obtain high birefringence and short coupling length, for different values of structural parameters varied over a wide range of wavelength. The properties are analyzed using a solid core of silica material. The proposed structure is implemented as a polarization splitter with splitting length of 1.9 mm and a splitting ratio of -34.988 dB, at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The obtained bandwidth in one band gap of about 81 nm. The numerical analysis ensures that the performance of the proposed polarization splitter is better than that of existing ones.
