  • This study was intended to investigate the cyclic behavior of high strength concrete beam-column connection. Four assemblies were designed 2/3 scale beam-column-slab joint and tested. The obtained results are follows. 1) The transverse beams increase the shear resistance and ductility of joint, 2) The slab was contributed to increase of the flexural capacity of the beam, but was not contributed to increase the joint ductility under lateral loads.

  • This study aims at postulating a simple methodology for predicting the failure modes of monotonically loaded reinforced concrete beam-column joints. All the factors that affect the failure modes of joints are discussed in detail using an experimental database of monotonically loaded exterior beam-column joints. The relative contributions of the strut and truss mechanisms to joint shear strength are determined based on the test results. A simple design equation for the beam longitudinal reinforcement ratio for joints with low, medium and high amount of stirrups is developed. The factors influencing the failure modes of monotonically loaded exterior beam-column joints are investigated in detail. Design charts that predict the failure modes of exterior beam-column connections both with and without stirrups are developed. Experimental data are compared with the design charts. The results show that the simple methodology gives very accurate predictions of the failure modes.

  • Analysis of supported excavation system by Elasto-Plastic Isoparametric Finite Element Method and Elasto-Plastic Beam Method have been conducted for the simulation of stepwise underground excavation. Conventional methods, fixed Supported Beam and Spring Supported Beam method, also have been examined and compared with the results of elasto-plastic beam method and field data. Except unavoidable result of upward ground settlement near the top of retaining wall and relatively high bending moment of wall at each excavation level, satisfactory results have been derived using elasto-plastic isopara metric finite element method. The results from elasto-plastic beam analysis program, developed by the author, are proved to be fit field data in acceptable variance as shown in the paper. Displacement and bending moment, of the wall by conventional methods, both fixed supported beam and spring supported beam, are always underestimated than field data, and attention must be given that the diffence increases with deeper excavation depth and lower horizontal subgrade reaction of the ground.

  • Accuracy and processing time are very important factors when the desired shape is fabricated with Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), one of Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) systems. In a conventional SLS process, laser spot size is fixed during laser exposing on the sliced figure. Therefore, it is difficult to accurately and rapidly fabricate the desired shape. In this paper, to deal with those problems an SFF system having ability of changing spot size is developed. The system provides high accuracy and optimal processing time. Specifically, a variable beam expander is employed to adjust spot size for different figures on a sliced shape. Finally, Design and performance estimation of the SFF system employing a variable beam expander are achieved and the mechanism will be addressed to measure the real spot size generated from the variable beam expander.

  • In recent years, mechanical systems such as high speed vehicles and railway trains moving on elastic beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. In this paper, a general approach, which can predict the dynamic behavior of a constrained mechanical system moving on a flexible beam structure, is proposed. Various supporting conditions for the foundation support are considered for the elastic beam structure. The elastic structure is assumed to be a non-uniform and linear Bernoulli-Euler beam with a proportional damping effect. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion is derived using the multi-body dynamics theory and the finite element method. The proposed equations of motion can be solved numerically using the generalized coordinate partitioning method and predictor-corrector algorithm, which is an implicit multi-step integration method.

  • In this paper, the efficiency and the accuracy of classical (CE) and high order (HE) beam element are improved by introducing two novel techniques. The first proposed element (FPE) provides an alternative for (HE) by taking the mode shapes of the clamped-clamped (C-C) beam into account. The second proposed element (SPE) which could be utilized instead of (CE) and (HE) considers not only the mode shapes of the (C-C) beam but also some virtual nodes. It is numerically proven that the eigenvalue problem and the frequency response function for Euler-Bernoulli beam are obtained more accurate and efficient in contrast to the traditional ones.

  • Many of today´s robot are required to perform tasks which demand a high level of accuracy in end-effector positioning. Those rigid robots are very inefficient and slow because its have large and heavy links, In an attempt to solve these problems, a robots using flexible beam were created. But the single-link flexible beam is infinite-dimensional system. Many researchers have proposed controlling such a beam an approximated model consisting of a finite a number of models. In this paper, we start by deriving the analytic model for the dynamics of general single-link beam, and a controller is designed for flexible beam with integral type servo system bases of the linear matrix inequality (LM) technique. To the end, simulation results show that a designed controller guarantees affective vibration control the single-link flexible beam.

  • To enhance the effective data transfer rate the multi-beam optical disk drive is presented. The Beam rotating actuator is necessary for putting multi-beam on more than one track. Ray tracing was also executed for real system set-up. The beam Rotating Actuator is made up of piezoelectric material, high stiffness wire hinge and dove prism. The actuator has about 1kHz natural frequency and suitable operational range. The dynamic equation for the actuator is derived for the control real system.

  • This paper deals with the thermo-elastic damping (TED) due to the temperature change in a beam when it is in a resonant condition. Based on previous references, the analytical formulation for TED of a resonant thin beam was derived, and then TED was expressed as a function of the geometry of the beam, especially, its thickness. It was clearly shown that TED of a resonant beam is significantly varied for different thickness. Finally, the worst thickness of the beam has been identified in regard to the high-Q factor, and the result was compared to the finite element analysis.

  • Laser beam welding parameters have experimentally investigated, using a continuous wave 3kW $CO_2$ laser with the various travel speeds, beam mode and laser beam power in low carbon steels. An optimum position of focus and the effect of shielding gas on penetration depth with varying the flow range of 0.5 to 5.1m/min have been combined to investigate the effect of laser power and travel speed on penetration depth and bead width. It is found that the optimum position of focus in 3kW class laser is 0.5 to 1.5mm below the surface of the material. The flow rate of shielding gas affects the penetration depth and He is more effective than Ar. The penetration depth in laser welds of low carbon steels is between two and four times of the bead width. Laser beam welding of butt joints in 2mm thick carbon steel has been carried out to establish a weldability lobe. The lobe indicating acceptable welding conditions is introduced.
