Alumina substrate was sealed by PbO-ZnO-$B_2O_3$glass using microwave heating. The crystallization behaviour of sealing glass and the state of sealing joint were investigated and were compared with those of conventionally sealed one. Compared to the conventional one, the microwave heat-treated sample had well-grown $\textrm{PbTiO}_3$ crystals and high degree of crystallinity even though it had shorter heat-treatment time and lower heat-treatment temperature. Also, the microwave sealed sample exhibited relatively a good sealing state and almost same bending strength.

The suspension arrangement of insulators provides flexibility and assists in power transmission in transmission lines. The performance of the insulator string is strongly influenced by the environmental conditions to which it is exposed, its shape and the inherent material properties of suspension-type insulators. The suspension-type insulators are mostly made from glass, porcelain and ceramic material due to their high resistivity. Irregularity in charge distribution throughout the porcelain insulator may lead to accelerated aging and electrical breakdown. A very high and steep lightning impulse voltage may also cause breakdown of suspension-type insulators. We investigated various material characteristics such as alumina addition, surface morphology, x-ray diffraction pattern and relative density of suspension porcelain insulators manufactured in 1989 (36,000 lbs.), 1995 (36,000 lbs.) and 2001 (36,000 lbs.) by the KRI Company for use in 154 kV high power transmission lines. We compared the material characteristics of these porcelain insulators with that of the top-of-the-line porcelain insulators (36,000 lbs.) manufactured by the NGK Company in 2000. These suspension-type porcelain insulators were exposed to arc and flashover tests to examine their electrical and mechanical strength. It was noted that alumina addition (17 wt.%) for K-2001 was one of the major contributors to the enhancement of the performance of the porcelain insulators and to their ability to withstand very high current generation during the arc test. The porcelain insulators manufactured during 2001 also showed the highest relative density of 95.8% as compared to the other insulators manufactured in 1989 and 1995 respectively 94.2% and 91.5%. We also discuss reports of various failure modes of suspension-type porcelain insulators.
Alumina powder was prepared from heat-treatment of artificial marble waste fine aggregate containing $Al(OH)_3$ for the purpose of the feasibility of its recycling. Artificial marble waste was heat-treated between $500^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ and XRD, BET surface area, BJH pore size distribution and adsorption of As were analyzed for heat-treated powder. It was found that the adsorption efficiency of As was significantly affected by phase composition of alumina powder rather than its physical characteristic. Heat-treated powder compact was sintered to produce the pellet. Alumina pellet with porosity more than 60% could be obtained after sintering below $1200^{\circ}C$ and also the addition of glass powder as a sintering aid had a positive effect on lowering sintering temperature, led to the high porosity near 60% and adsorption of As over 60% even at $900^{\circ}C$.

This study investigated the influence of the viscoelastic property of slag when producing glass fiber, MFS631 with 60% of manganese slag, 30% of steel slag, and 10% of silica stone. To fabricate the MFS631 glass bulk, slag materials were placed in an alumina crucible, melted at $1,550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, and then annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. It was found that glass is non-crystalline through X-ray diffraction analysis. MFS631 fiber was produced at speed in the range of 100~300 rpm at $1,150^{\circ}C$. The loss modulus (G") and storage modulus (G') of the produced glass fiber were evaluated at high temperatures. G' and G" of MFS631 were greater than $893^{\circ}C$, and the modulus value was 136,860 pa. This is similar to the results of a general E-glass fiber graph. Therefore, it was concluded that its spinnability is similar to that of E-glass fiber; therefore, it can be commercialized.

E-glass fiber is the most widely used glass fiber for reinforced composite materials of aircrafts, automobiles and leisure equipments. But recently researches are being progressed to reduce boric oxide from 8 % to 0 (zero), as is called 'Boron free E-glass', because of increasing material cost, environmental problem, and improving chemical resistance and mechanical properties of E-glass fiber. In this study, we fabricated the bulk glass and fiber glass of 'Boron free E-glass (BF) compositions', and characterized thermal properties and optical properties. 'Boron free E-glass (BF)' was obtained by the melting of mixed batch materials at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs with different $Al_2O_3$ compositions 5~10 %. We obtained transparent clear glass with high visible light transmittance value of 81~86 %, and low thermal expansion coefficient of $4.2{\sim}4.9{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and softening point of $907{\sim}928^{\circ}C$. For the chemical resistance test of 'BF' fiber samples, we identified that the higher alumina contents gives the better corrosion resistance of glass fiber.
In this study, glass fibers are fabricated via a continuous spinning process using manganese slag, steel slag, and silica stone. To fabricate the glass fibers, raw materials are put into an alumina crucible, melted at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs, and then annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. We obtain a black colored glass. We identify the non-crystalline nature of the glass using an XRD(x-ray diffractometer) graph. An adaptable temperature for spinning of the bulk marble glass is characterized using a high temperature viscometer. Spinning is carried out using direct melting spinning equipment as a function of the fiberizing temperature in the range of $1109^{\circ}C$ to $1166^{\circ}C$, while the winder speed is in the range of 100rpm to 250rpm. We investigate the various properties of glass fibers. The average diameters of the glass fibers are measured by optical microscope and FE-SEM. The average diameter of the glass fibers is $73{\mu}m$ at 100rpm, $65{\mu}m$ at 150rpm, $55{\mu}m$ at 200rpm, and $45{\mu}m$ at 250rpm. The mechanical properties of the fibers are confirmed using a UTM(Universal materials testing machine). The average tensile strength of the glass fibers is 21MPa at 100rpm, 31MPa at 150rpm, 34MPa at 200rpm, and 45MPa at 250rpm.
Mullitization in a multicomponent oxide system(alumina-kaolin-quartz-feldspar-talc) was studied as a function of sintering temperature from 1200 to 1500$^{\circ}C$ based upon a quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. In the present study mullite grew as wiskers and its formation reaction showed characteristic there stages as follows In the first stage(1255-1295$^{\circ}C$) an appreciable mullitization(nucleation) occurred while corun-dum dissolution into glass (increasing glass content ) limited the rate of the reaction. At 1295-1335$^{\circ}C$ (second state) the reaction was significantly enhanced with a considerable glass consumption and with no appreciable change in corundum content. Finally (above 1335$^{\circ}C$) the reaction rate was attenuated re-markably with an apparent decrease in glass consumption rate. The impingement of mullite whiskers by oth-er whiskers and crystals was speculated to cause mullite growth in thickness direction with a slow growth rate resulting in the diminished reaction rate in the final stage.

In this work, Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films for toxic gas sensor application were deposited on low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrates, by RF magnetron sputtering method. LTCC is one of promising materials for integration with heater, low cost production and high manufacturing yields than silicon substrate. The LTCC substrates with thickness of $400\;{\mu}m$ were fabricated by laminating 12 greentapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The GZO thin films deposited on the substrates and were analyzed by X-ray diffraction method (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The films are well crystallized in the hexagonal (wurzite) structure with increasing thickness. The fabricated sensors showed good sensitivity and fast response time to common types of toxic gases (NOx, COx).
Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) has attracted a great deal of interest from the viewpoint of energy saving. The magnet of conduction-cooled high temperature superconducting (HTS) SMES is cooled down by a cryocooler. One of the most important problems to be assured the protection of magnet and cryocooler is breakdown at cryogenic temperature. In this study, we investigated insulation materials such as Kapton, Aluminum Nitride(AIN), Alumina($Al_2O_3$), glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP) and vacuum in cryogenic temperature. Also, we analyzed statistically the Weibull distribution of breakdown voltage.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attractive for field emitter because of their outstanding electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Several applications using CNTs as field emitters have been demonstrated such as field emission display (FED), backlight unit (BLU), and X-ray source. In this study, we fabricated a CNT cathode using transparent ultra-thin CNT film. First, CNT aqueous solution was prepared by ultrasonically dispersing purified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in deionized water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). To obtain the CNT film, the CNT solution in a milliliter or even several tens of micro-litters was deposited onto a porous alumina membrane through vacuum filtration process. Thereafter, the alumina membrane was solvated by the 3 M NaOH solution and the floating CNT film was easily transferred to an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrate of $0.5\times0.5cm^2$ with a film mask. The transmittance of as-prepared ultra-thin CNT films measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer was 68~97%, depending on the amount of CNTs dispersed in an aqueous solution. Roller activation, which is a essential process to improve the field emission characteristics of CNT films, increased the UV-Vis transmittance up to 93~98%. This study presents SEM morphology of CNT emitters and their field emission properties according to the concentration of CNTs in an aqueous solutions. Since the ultra-thin CNT emitters prepared from the solutions show a high peak current density of field emission comparable to that of the paste-base CNT emitters and do not contain outgassing sources such as organic binders, they are considered to be very promising for small-size-but-high-end applications including X-ray sources and microwave power amplifiers.
