Microstructure and mechanical properties of five Cr-Mo steels for nuclear industry applications have been investigated. Transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, differential scanning calorimeter, hardness, tensile, and impact test were used to evaluate the Cr and W effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties. Microstructures of Cr-Mo steels after tempering are classified into three types : bainitic 2.25Cr-lMo steel, martensitic Mod.9Cr-lMo, HT9M, and HT9W steels, and dual phase HT9 steel. The majority of the precipitates were found to be M$_{23}$C$_{6}$ carbides. As minor phases, fine needle-like V(C,N), spherical NbC, fine needle-like Cr-rich Cr$_2$N, and Cr-rich M$_{7}$C$_3$were also found. Addition of 2wt.% W in Cr-Mo steels retarded the formation of subgrain and dissolution of Cr$_2$N precipitates. Hardness and ultimate tensile strength increased with increasing Cr content. Though Cr content of HT9W steel was lower than that of HT9 steel, the hardness of HT9W was higher due to the higher W content. W added HT9W steel had the highest ultimate tensile strength above $600^{\circ}C$. But impact toughness of W added steel (HT9W) and high Cr steel (HT9) was low.w.w.

In the automobile industry, in order to increase the fuel efficiency and conform to the safety regulations, it is necessary to make the vehicles as light as possible. Therefore, it is crucial to manufacture dual phase steels, complex phases steels, MS steels, TRIP steels, and TWIP from high strength steels with a tensile strength of 700Mpa or more. In order to apply ultra-high tensile strength steel to the body, the welding process is essential. Resistance spot welding, which is advantageous in terms of its cost, is used in more than 80% of cases in body welding. It is generally accepted that ultra-high tensile strength steel has poor weldability, because its alloy element content is increased to improve its strength. In the case of the resistance spot welding of ultra-high tensile steel, it has been reported that the proper welding condition area is reduced and interfacial fracture and partial interfacial fracture occur in the weld zone. Therefore, research into the welding quality judgment that can predict the defect and quality in real time is being actively conducted. In this study, the dynamic resistance of the weld was monitored using the secondary circuit process variables detected during resistance spot welding, and the factors necessary for the determination of the welding quality were extracted from the dynamic resistance pattern. The correlations between the extracted factors and the weld quality were analyzed and a regression analysis was carried out using highly correlated pendulums. Based on this research, a regression model that can be applied to the field was proposed.

Various types of steel, namely, 0.35C, 0.2C-Cr, and 0.2C-Cr-Mo steels, were quenched and tempered by high-frequency induction heat treatment. The type, size, and spheroidization of the carbides varied depending on the tempering temperatures ($450{\sim}720^{\circ}C$). During the tempering process, the carbide was precipitated in the martensite matrix. The 0.35C, 0.2C-Cr, and 0.2C-Cr-Mo steels contained carbides that were smaller than 120 nm. The carbide was spheroidized as the tempering temperature increased. Owing to the fine microstructure and spheroidization of the carbides, all three steels had a high tensile strength as well as yield ratio and reduction of area. In the case of the 0.2C-Cr steel, the use of Cr as an alloying element facilitated the precipitation of alloyed carbides with an extremely small particle and resulted in an increase in the spheroidization rate of the carbides. As a result, a large reduction of area was achieved (>70%). The 0.2C-Cr-Mo steel had the highest tensile strength because of the high hardenability that can be attributed to the presence of alloying elements (Cr and Mo). Quenching and tempering steels by induction heat treatment resulted in a high strength of over 1 GPa and a large reduction of area (>70%) because of the rapid heating and cooling rates.
High performance, high strength steels were developed and used in steel structures recently. Since the newly developed high strength steels posses different toughness, weldability, yield strength ratio, etc. in compare with conventional structural steels, it is requred to investigate the applicability of the design strength of fillet weld specified in the existing design codes. The comparison of the design strengths of various codes from domestic and overseas shows quite a difference. Test results for fillet weld strengths were collected and statistically analysed. Each of yield strength, tensile strength of parent material and tensile strength of weld metal was selected as a main parameter for each estimation equation respectively. All the estimation equations yield almost same values for each type of steel regardless the type of main parameter selected. Considering the behaviour of fillet welded joints and for practical purposes, it is proposed that the equation with tensile strength of parent material is to be used in design codes. The comparison with the proposed nominal strengths of fillet welds shows that the existing design codes could lead to an uneconomical result for low strength steels and lie on an unsafe side for high strength steels.
The hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of high strength TRIP/TWIP steels with the tensile strength of 600Mpa to 900Mpa grade was investigated using cathodically hydrogen charged specimens. TWIP steels with full austenite structure show a lower hydrogen content than do TRIP steels. The uniform distribution of strong traps throughout the matrix in the form of austenite is considered beneficial to reduce the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of TWIP steels. Moreover, an austenite structure with very fine deformation twins formed during straining could also improve the ductility and reduce notch sensitivity. In Ubend and deep drawing cup tests, TWIP steels show a good resistance to hydrogen embrittlement compared with TRIP steels.
Sticking behavior under the hot rolling conditions for ferritic stainless steels have been studied. Sticking, which is a phenomenon that the naked metal exposed to the surface by scale breakaway during hot rolling sticks to the roll surface, was affected by both high temperature tensile strength and oxidation resistance of the steels. A steel having higher tensile strength and lower oxidation resistance exhibits better resistance to the sticking. It is due to that higher tensile strength increases localized deformation resistance and lower oxidation resistance creates lower friction between steel and roll by forming thicker scale as a lubricant during hot rolling. So, the sticking tends to occur more severely in the order of 430J1L, 436L, 430 and 409L. The most sensitive temperature to the sticking was found to be 90$0^{\circ}C$ for all grade of steels. It was also found that the high speed steel(HSS) roll compared to the Hi-Cr roll was more beneficial to prevent sticking. Because higher surface hardness of HSS roll compared to that of Hi-Cr roll provides less nucleation sites for sticking such as scratch on the roll surface.
The effects of ageing treatment on the mechanical properties of two Cu-bearing HSLA(High Strength Low Alloy) steels, HSLA-A and HSLA-B ,were studied by means of SEM, TEM, tensile, charpy impact and hardness tests. These steels showed excellent combination in strength and toughness at an ageing of $650^{\circ}C$ by the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu and low carbon alloying. The peak strength was achieved at an ageing of 50$0^{\circ}C$ in both steels, while the impact energy was very low in this peak strength. With ageing temperature above this temperature, strength was decreased whereas impact energy increased. A marked increase in hardness above 675$^{\circ}C$ was associated with the formation of “M-A constituents” which forms during cooling from austenite-ferrite two phase region. The impact transition temperature of HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were -l$25^{\circ}C$ and -145$^{\circ}C$, respectively.
In this study, two Fe-30Mn-0.2C-(1.5Al) high-manganese steels with different surface conditions were hydrogen-charged under high temperature and pressure; then, tensile testing was performed at room temperature in air. The yield strength of the 30Mn-0.2C specimen increased with decreasing surface roughness(achieved via polishing), but that of the 30Mn-0.2C-1.5Al specimen was hardly affected by the surface conditions. On the other hand, the tendency of hydrogen embrittlement of the two high-manganese steels was not sensitive to hydrogen charging or surface conditions from the standpoints of elongation and fracture behavior. Based on the EBSD analysis results, the small decrease in elongation of the charged specimens for the Fe-30Mn-0.2C-(1.5Al) high-manganese steels was attributed to the enhanced dislocation pile-up around grain boundaries, caused by hydrogen.

An important challenging issue in the automotive industry is the light-weight, safe design and enhancement of crash response of an auto-body structures. These objectives lead to increasing adoption of high strength steel sheet for inner and outer auto-body members. This paper evaluates the dynamic tensile characteristics of high strength steel sheets, HS45R, TRIP60, DP60 and DP100, along the rolling direction and transverse direction. Static tensile tests were carried out at the strain rate of 0.003/sec using the static tensile machine (Instron 5583). Dynamic tensile tests were carried out at the range of strain rate from 0.1/sec to 200/sec using a high speed material testing machine developed. The tensile tests acquire stress-strain relation and strain rate sensitivity of each material. The experimental results show two important aspects for high strength steels: the flow stress increases as strain rate increases; the strain hardening decreases as the tensile stress increases. The experiments also produce interesting results that the elongation does not decrease even when the strain rate increases.
Recently ultra high strength steels(UHSS) has been widely applied to the structural or safety components in the automotive industry. Specially, hot stamping boron steel 22MnB5 has shown the crash-resistant characteristics when applying to bumpers and pillars. Lap joint Laser welding of the hot stamped and die quenched sheets of Boron steel was carried out using 3kW Nd/YAG laser. The appropriate Lap joint laser welding conditions were founded separately for four lap joint combinations. The lower sheest is a hot stamped sheet in common and the upper sheet is selected among the hot stamped steel and high strength steels such as SPCC, 370MPa, and 590MPa grade high strength steels. Cross bead sections and local hardening and softening were observed as well as tensile-shear test results.
