Growth and survival of the hard shelled mussel spat were investigated to confirm the possibe spat culture in seawater pond from September 2014 to April 2015. Also, we measured simultaneously environmental factors including water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, DIN, DIP, chlorophyll a, and abundance and dominant species of phytoplankton in seawater pond every month. Ranges of water temperature and salinity were $4.0-23.4^{\circ}C$ and 18.8-25.2 psu, respectively, which were rather lower than the reported optimal level. Monthly measured survival rates in all the spat cages were over 90%. Concentration of chlorophyll-a and abundance of phytoplankton were very high, and dominant species phytoplankton were cryptomonads and nanoflagellates. These dominant species were considered to be good food organisms for the bivalve spat. The experimental cage stocked 100 individuals per basket ($2,700ind.\;m^{-2}$) hanging in bottom of seawater pond revealed the highest growth in shell height ($7.63{\pm}4.65mm$), but all experimental cages stocked below 200 individuals per basket ($5,400ind.\;m^{-2}$) did not show statistically significant difference. We may expect that seawater pond would be one of the best culture ground for bivalve spats when appropriate measures are available.
Stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance. The drawback is that pitting occurs easily due to the concentration of chloride. In addition, corrosion of socket weld, which is structurally and chemically weaker than the other components of the pipe, occurs rapidly. Since these two phenomena overlap, pinhole leakage occurs frequently in the seawater pipe socket welds made of stainless steel at the power plants. To analyze this specific corrosion, a metallurgical analysis of the stainless steel socket welds, where the actual corrosion occurred during the power plant operation, was performed. The micro-structure and chemical composition of each socket weld were analyzed. In addition, selective corrosion of the specific micro-structure in a mixed dendrite structure comprising γ-austenite (gamma-phase iron) and δ-ferrite (iron at high temperature) was investigated based on the characteristic micro-morphology and chemical composition of the corroded area. Finally, the different corrosion stages and characteristics of socket weld corrosion are summarized.

Jeju Island is mainly composed of basaltic lava flows and subordinate amounts of volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks. Jeju Province operates the monitoring wells for seawater intrusion problems around Jeju Island to evaluate of groundwater resources in coastal area. Various surveys and monitoring have been performed in boreholes, and also conventional geophysical well loggings conducted to identify basalt sequences and assess seawater intrusion problems. Various conventional geophysical well logs, including radioactive logs, electrical log, caliper log, and temperature and conductivity log and heat-pulse flowmeter log were obtained in 29 boreholes. The results of geophysical well loggings for saturated rocks are interesting and consistent. Natural gamma logs are useful in basalt sequences to sedimentary interbeds, unconsolidated U formation, and seoguipo formation with higher natural gamma log regardless of saturated or unsaturated basalts. Neutron logs are very effective to discriminate among individual lava flows, flow breaks, and sedimentary interbeds in saturated formation. In hyalocastite, porosity is high and resistivity is low, and we think that hyalocastite is a major pathway of fluid flow. In trachybasalt, porosity has a wide range and resistivity is high. In sedimentary interbeds, unconsolidated U formation and seoguipo formation, porosity is high and resistivity is low. The temperature logs in eastern area in Jeju are useful to interpret the hydrogeological unit and evaluate seawater intrusion in Suan area.

The induction motor is used for driving the special equipments such as warship and submarine pump due to robust structure and simple maintenance. Domestic and foreign warships use a wide range of voltages and the DC voltage sources mainly from battery. In the low voltage level, the ${\Delta}$-connection operation of induction motor can be used for the maximum power. However, the temperature of the inverter increases because of the high input current. On the other hand, Y-connection operation of the induction motor does not cause a problem of temperature because of the low input current compared to the ${\Delta}$-connection. But the lack of the supply voltage can not be avoided. Therefore, this paper suggests the algorithm of the optimum field weakening control to extend the operating range of the induction motor with maximum power in a limited thermal and DC voltage condition.
This study was accomplished to evaluate the performance of Multi Effect Distillation(MED) for solar thermal desalination system. It was designed Multi effect distillation with $3m^3$/day capacity and Shell&Tube type heat exchanger. Also, The effective heat transfer of Shell&Tube heat exchanger was used Cu(90%)-Ni(10%) corrugated tube. The parameters relating to the performance of Multi Effect Distillation are known as hot water flow rate. The experimental conditions for each parameters were $18^{\circ}C$ for sea water inlet temperature, $6m^3$/hour sea water inlet volume flow rate, $75^{\circ}C$ for hot water inlet temperature, 2.4, 3.6, and $4.8\;m^3$/hour for hot water inlet volume flow rate, respectively. The results are as follows, Development for Multi effect distillation was required about 40kW heat and 35kW cooling source to produce $3m^3$/day of fresh water. Based on the results of this study, It makes possible to secure economics of desalination system with solar energy which is basically needed development of high efficiency fresh water generator.

Salt is the most important substance in physiological activities of the human body concerning transport of the ingested nutrients into the blood. Thus, the most ideal salt must not contain any harmful ingredients such as cadmium, mercury, lead, and arsenic. However, it is legal to include trace amounts of the hazardous ingredients in salt owing to a technical limitation, because salt is generally obtained from seawater. This paper reported an experimental result about a new method of manufacturing high-quality table salts without hazardous ingredients by using "$15^{\circ}C$ low-temperature vacuum drying technology," applied to the sequential extraction phenomenon of seawater with increasing the concentration. The world's best table salt can be produced if the present results are applied and extended to the traditional solar salt industry.

Physical characteristics and nutrient distributions in seawater were investigated to understand the mechanism of red tide outbreak in coastal waters off Kohung area. To identify any physical and chemical differences before, during and after the red tide outbreaks, 6 times of field observations have been carried out from May to October, 1997. We found that major environmental properties of the seawater in the study area were determined not by the local meteoric conditions or nearby-land influences, but by the intrusion of seawater from offshore. In particular, extreme environmental variations in seawater were found during the period of red tide outbreak from August to September. Before the red tide outbreak, high concentrations of DIN(Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen)were found in seawater, but they decreased during the outbreak. Whereas no significant variations of DIP(Dissolved Inorganic Phosphate) were found. For the water mass in the semienclosed northern part of the study area, local nutrient sources originated from nearby-lands were estimated to cover 70% of total DIN input, but the rest part of the water mass in the study area, sporadic intrusion of offshore water mass could account for the major source of DIN supply. An offshore water mass influenced by Yangtze river effluent was suggested as one of the candidates with its high nitrate contents, high seawater temperature and low salinity. A red tide related phytoplankton, Gyrodinium impudicum, was found in seawater on the 21th day of August and, on the same day, a unique water mass with high temperature and extremely low salinity suddenly appeared in the study area. On the 22th day of September, after one and half month duration of red tide we found that red tide had disappeared simultaneously with the intrusion of new water mass with different characteristics.

In this study, variations in water temperature after the passage of typhoons in Korean waters from 2009-2015 were analyzed. Sea surface temperature (SST) images derived from satellite remote sensing data were used, and water temperature information came from real-time mooring buoys at Yangyang, Gangneung, Samcheok and Yeoungdeok, while wind data was supplied by the Korea Meteorological Administration. Differences in SST observed before and after the passage of a typhoon using the SST images were found to be affected by wind direction as well as hot and cool seasonal tendencies. Coastal water temperatures of the eastern part of the Korean peninsula, located to the right of a typhoon, as in the case of typhoons Muifa, Chanhom, Nakri and Tembin, were lowered by a coastal upwelling system from southerly winds across the water's surface at depths of 15m and 25m. In particular, typhoons Chanhom and Tembin decreased water temperatures by about $8-11^{\circ}C$ and $16^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, temperatures to the left of the typhoons were increased by a downwelling of offshore seawater with a high temperature through the mid and lower seawater layers. After the passage of the typhoons, further mixing of seawater at a higher or lower temperature due to southerly or northerly winds, according to the context, lasted for 1-2 or 4 days, respectively.

The coastal water is a space where salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), critical energy-conveying mediator, stay to adapt to different environments while traveling between ocean and river ecosystems for spawning and growth. The mid-eastern coast of Korea (MECW) is the southern limit of salmon distributed in the North Pacific Ocean. Understanding the distribution and migration characteristics of salmon in the MECW is important for the prediction of changes in the amount and distribution of salmon related to changes in the future marine environment. We analyzed the relationship between the salmon migratory timing ascending the Wangpi river and change in vertical seawater temperature and tidal elevation. Overall results highlight that (1) Salmon began to ascend the river when the sea surface water temperature (SST) decreased below 20℃; (2) The number of salmon ascending the river increased when the temperature difference between the upper and lower layers decreased, but decreased when the temperature difference was higher than 5℃; (3) The number of salmon ascending the river peaked, when the SST was 18℃-19℃ and sea levels rose at high tide. This study provide important insight into predicting changes in the ecosystem energy circulation through climate change at its southern distribution limit.

We applied both SP monitoring and pole-pole array resistivity surveys and SP survey and dipole-dipole array resistivity survey to leakage problems in several embankments and dike, respectively, to estimate and detect the zone of leakage. The embankment is generally affected by tidal variation and has low resistivity characteristics due to the high saturation of seawater. According to this situation, SP monitoring and resistivity survey using pole-pole electrode array, which is relatively more effective to the conductive media, were carried out to delineate the leakage zones of sea water through the embankment. We checked out electrical conductivity(EC) and temperature variations along the inner part of the embankment to detect the zone of seawater leakage and found that the measured EC value agreed to that of seawater in the leakage zone and the temperature was lower than that of the vicinity of leakage zone. SP monitoring results were coincide with tidal variations at each embankment. Based on the survey results, it is concluded that both SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity method are quite effective for investigation of seawater leakage zones in the embankment.
