  • In this paper, we have proposed a modified Marker-And-Cell (MAC) method to investigate the problem of an unsteady 2-D incompressible flow with heat and mass transfer at low, moderate, and high Reynolds numbers with no-slip and slip boundary conditions. We have used this method to solve the governing equations along with the boundary conditions and thereby to compute the flow variables, viz. u-velocity, v-velocity, P, T, and C. We have used the staggered grid approach of this method to discretize the governing equations of the problem. A modified MAC algorithm was proposed and used to compute the numerical solutions of the flow variables for Reynolds numbers Re = 10, 500, and 50000 in consonance with low, moderate, and high Reynolds numbers. We have also used appropriate Prandtl (Pr) and Schmidt (Sc) numbers in consistence with relevancy of the physical problem considered. We have executed this modified MAC algorithm with the aid of a computer program developed and run in C compiler. We have also computed numerical solutions of local Nusselt (Nu) and Sherwood (Sh) numbers along the horizontal line through the geometric center at low, moderate, and high Reynolds numbers for fixed Pr = 6.62 and Sc = 340 for two grid systems at time t = 0.0001s. Our numerical solutions for u and v velocities along the vertical and horizontal line through the geometric center of the square cavity for Re = 100 has been compared with benchmark solutions available in the literature and it has been found that they are in good agreement. The present numerical results indicate that, as we move along the horizontal line through the geometric center of the domain, we observed that, the heat and mass transfer decreases up to the geometric center. It, then, increases symmetrically.

  • A numerical study of unsteady mixed convection in a cavity with high viscous fluid is presented. Finite volume method was employed for the discretization and PISO algorithm was used for calculating pressure term. The parameters governing the problem are the Rayleigh number ($10^3\;{\leq}\;Ra\;{\leq}\;10^5$), the Reynolds number (0 < Re $\leq$ 1), and the aspect ratio (0.5 $\leq$ AR $\leq$ 2). The fluid used is silicon oil, a high prandtl number fluid, Pr = 909.1. The results show velocity vectors and temperature distributions. It is found that the periodic flows in a cavity are observed at very low Reynolds numbers, and the period of periodic flow decreases with increasing Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, and increases with increasing aspect ratio. Also, the Reynolds number range of periodic flow increases with increasing Rayleigh numbers and aspect ratio.

  • The two-phase turbulent flow past an interface-piercing circular cylinder is studied using a high-fidelity orthogonal curvilinear grid solver with a Lagrangian dynamic subgrid-scale model for large-eddy simulation and a coupled level set and volume of fluid method for air-water interface tracking. The simulations cover the sub-critical and critical and post critical regimes of the Reynolds and sub and super-critical Froude numbers in order to investigate the effect of both dimensionless parameters on the flow. Significant changes in flow features near the air-water interface were observed as the Reynolds number was increased from the sub-critical to the critical regime. The interface makes the separation point near the interface much delayed for all Reynolds numbers. The separation region at intermediate depths is remarkably reduced for the critical Reynolds number regime. The deep flow resembles the single-phase turbulent flow past a circular cylinder, but includes the effect of the free-surface and the limited span length for sub-critical Reynolds numbers. At different Froude numbers, the air-water interface exhibits significantly changed structures, including breaking bow waves with splashes and bubbles at high Froude numbers. Instantaneous and mean flow features such as interface structures, vortex shedding, Reynolds stresses, and vorticity transport are also analyzed. The results are compared with reference experimental data available in the literature. The deep flow is also compared with the single-phase turbulent flow past a circular cylinder in the similar ranges of Reynolds numbers. Discussion is provided concerning the limitations of the current simulations and available experimental data along with future research.

  • Gas foil thrust bearings (GFTBs) support axial loads in oil-free, high speed rotating machinery using air or gas as a lubricant. Due to the inherent low viscosity of the lubricant, GFTBs often have super-laminar flows in the film region at operating conditions with high Reynolds numbers. This paper develops a mathematical model of a GFTB with turbulent flows and validates the model predictions against those from the literature. The pressure distribution, film thickness distribution, load carrying capacity, and power loss are predicted for both laminar and turbulent flow models and compared with each other. Predictions for an air lubricant show that the GFTB has high Reynolds numbers at the leading edge where the film thickness is large and relatively low Reynolds numbers at the trailing edge. The predicted load capacity and power loss for the turbulent flow model show little difference from those for the laminar flow model even at the highest speed of 100 krpm, because the Reynolds numbers are smaller than the critical Reynolds number. On the other hand, refrigerant (R-134a) lubricant, which has a higher density than air, had significant differences due to high Reynolds numbers in the film region, in particular, near the leading and outer edges. The predicted load capacity and power loss for the turbulent flow model are 2.1 and 2.3 times larger, respectively, than those for the laminar flow model, thus implying that the turbulent flow greatly affects the performance of the GFTB.

  • High-order weighted difference schemes with uniform meshes are considered for the convection-diffusion problem depending on Reynolds numbers. For small Reynolds numbers, a weighed cen-tral difference scheme is suggested since there is no boundary layer. For large Reynolds numbers, we propose a modified up wind method with an artificial diffusion in order to overcome nonphysical oscilla-tion of central schemes and obtain good accuracy in the boundary later. Existence and corresponding error estimates of the solution for the difference scheme have been shown. Numerical experiments are provided to back up the analysis.

  • Numerical simulations of two-dimensional steady incompressible lid-driven flow in a square cavity are presented by a new solution code(PowerCFD) which adopts an unstructured cell-centered method. Solutions are obtained for configurations with a Reynolds number as high as 10,000 with both rectangular and hybrid types of unstructured grid mesh in order to validate the code's independency of grid type. Interesting features of the flow are presented in detail and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions found in the literature. It is found that the code is capable of producing accurately the nature of the lid-driven cavity flow at high Reynolds numbers with no grid type dependency.

  • Numerical simulations of two-dimensional steady incompressible lid-driven flow in a square cavity are presented to verify the validity of a new solution code(PowerCFD) with unstructured grids. The code uses the non-staggered(collocated) grid approach which is very popular for incompressible flow analysis because of its numerical efficiency on the curvilinear or unstructured grids. Solutions are obtained for configurations with a Reynolds number as high as 10,000 with both rectangular and hybrid types of unstructured grid mesh. Interesting features of the flow are presented in detail and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions found in the literature. It is found that the code is capable of producing accurately the nature of the lid-driven cavity flow at high Reynolds numbers.

  • For a flow normal to a circular disk, the flow separation occurs from the edge of the disk and the flow recirculation zone exists behind the disk. Many existing studies conducted simulations of flow normal to a circular disk under low Reynolds numbers. Some studies performed LES or DES simulations under high Reynolds numbers. However, comparative study for different RANS models for high Reynolds numbers is very limited. This study presents numerical simulations of a flow normal to a circular disk using Realizable k-ε model and SST k-ω model. The recirculation bubble length and drag coefficient were compared with the experimental data. The SST k-ω model showed the excellent predictions for the recirculation bubble length and drag coefficient.

  • Flow instability is investigated in a two-dimensional channel with thin baffles placed symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise dircetion. At low Reynolds numbers, the flow is steady and symmetric. Above a critical Reynolds number, the steady flow undergoes a Hopf bifurcation leading to unsteady periodic flow. As Reynolds number further increases, we observe the onset of secondary instability. At high Reynolds numbers, the two-dimensional periodic flow becomes three dimmensional. To identify the onset of secondary instability, we carry out Floquet stability analysis. We obseved the transition to 3D flow at a Reynolds number of about 125. Also, we computed dominant spanwise wavenumbers near the critical Reynolds number, and visualized vortical structures associated with the most unstable spanwise wave.

  • Two-dimensional lid-driven closed flows within square cavity were studied numerically for four Reynolds numbers : $10^4$, 3$\times10^4$, 5$\times10^4$ and 7.5$\times10^4$. A convective difference scheme to maintain the same spatial accurary by irregular grid correction is adopted by applying the interior division principle. Grid number is $80\times80$and its minimum size is about 1/400 of the cavity height. At Re=$10^4$, periodic migration of small eddies appearing in corner separation region and its temporal sinusoidal fluctuation are represented. At three higher Reynolds numbers(3$\times10^4$, 5$\times10^4$ and 7.5$\times10^4$), an organizing structure of four consecutive vorticles at two lower corners is revealed from time-mean flow patterns. But, instantaneous flow characteristics show very random unsteady fluctuation mainly due to the interaction between rotating shed vortices and stationary eddies within the corners.
