  • A single-and dual-wavelength switchable polarized Yb-doped double-clad fiber laser around 1120 nm based on a pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) is demonstrated. The polarization-maintaining (PM) linear cavity is composed of a double clad PM Yb-doped fiber (YDF) and a pair of PM FBGs. The laser can operate in stable dual-wavelength or wavelength-switching modes due to the polarization hole burning (PHB) and the spatial hole burning (SHB) enhanced by the PM linear cavity. In dual-wavelength operation, the two orthogonally polarized wavelengths are centered at 1118.912 nm and 1119.152 nm, with an interval of 0.24 nm and a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 35 dB. The maximum output power is 14.67 W when the launched LD pump is 24 W corresponding to an optical efficiency of 61.1%. The lasing lines switchover may be realized by adjusting the polarization controller (PC) fitted in the cavity. The two single-wavelengths are 1118.912 nm and 1119.152 nm. When the injected LD pump is 24 W, the highest output powers are 7.68 W and 8.64 W corresponding to optical efficiencies of 32% and 36% respectively. The spectral linewidth of the lasing lines are 0.075 nm and 0.07 nm, and the average numerical values of PER aredB and 19.9 dB, respectively.

  • In this paper, we report measured results for an all-fiber $7{\times}1$ pump combiner based on an optical fiber chip for high-power fiber lasers. An optical-fiber chip was fabricated by etching a fiber, having core and cladding diameters of 20 and $400{\mu}m$, in the longitudinal direction. To both ends of the etched chip, we spliced input and output fibers. First, we tied together seven optical fibers, having core and cladding diameters of 105 and $125{\mu}m$ respectively, in a cylindrical bundle and spliced them to the $375-{\mu}m$ end of the optical-fiber chip. Then, we attached an output DCF with core and cladding diameters of 25 and $250{\mu}m$ to the $250-{\mu}m$ end of the optical-fiber chip. Finally, the fabricated $7{\times}1$ pump combiner showed an average optical coupling efficiency of about 90.2% per port. This chip-based pump combiner may replace conventional pump combiners by massive production of fiber chips.

  • Diode laser absorption sensors are advantageous because they may provide fast, sensitive, absolute, and selective measurements of species concentration. These systems are very attractive for practical applications owing to its compactness, resonable cost, robustness, and ease of use. In addition, diode lasers are fiber-optic compatible and thus enable simultaneous measurements of multiple species along a line-of-sight. Recent advances of room-temperature, near-IR and visible diode laser sources for telecommunication, optical data storage applications make it possible to be applied for combustion diagnostics based on diode laser absorption spectroscopy. Therefore, combined with fiber-optics and high sensitive detection strategies, compact and portable sensor systems are now appearing for variety of applications. The objectives of this research are to develope a new gas sensing system and to verify feasibility of this system. Wavelength and power characteristics as a function of injection current and temperature are experimentally found out. Direct absorption spectroscopy has been demonstrated in these experiments and has a bright prospect to this diode laser system.

  • We constructed a TEA $N_2$ laser which consists of spark gap, pulse type high voltage power supply, Blumlein transmission line circuit, laser tube with Ernst electrode. We observed the self-preionization with an optical fiber in the spark gap and laser tube. The higher voltage power supplied to the Blumlein transmission line circuit, the better preionization was. An U-type transformer yielded better stability and output power than an I-type transformer. The discharge time after triggering a spark gap for the U-type transformer was also short. We obtained the stability of $2.7\%$ and output power of $36{\mu}J$ when the optimum conditions of the laser operation were spark gap distance of 6.0 mm, electrode distance in laser tube of 5.0 mm, $N_2$ gas flow rate in spark gap of 1500 cc/min, $N_2$ gas flow rate in laser tube of 4 ${\iota}$/min, output window reflectivity of $40\%$ and repetition rate of 10 Hz.

  • The development of LD(Laser Diode) tester and its control system based on the graphical programming language(LabVIEW) is addressed. The ill tester is used to check the optic power and the optic spectrum of the LD Chip. The emitter size of LD chip and the diameter of the Detector(optic fiber and photo diode) are very small, therefore the test device needs high accuracy. But each motion part of the test device could not accomplish high accuracy due to the limit of the mechanical performance. So, an image processing with machine vision is proposed to compensate for the error. By adopting our method we can reduce the error of position within $\pm$5$\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • These days, world wide interest about global warming and environmental pollution and exhausting fossil fuel which have been main energy source in all around the world. So many country have tried to find out the solution by investing new & renewable and clean energy. Therefore LNG have been widely used as a substitution of fossil fuel and clean energy that emits less pollutant like SOx, NOx. Therefore LNG consumption has been quickly raised and LNG carriers have been getting larger for decades. In this study, high power fiber laser was used for welding of stainless steel for LNG carrier to increase its productivity. Used material was STS316L which has low carbon less than 0.03% and its thickness was 8 mm. We carried out bead, lap and butt welding by using the fiber laser which has maximum power up to 5kW. As a result, we could find out that lap and butt joint was possible at welding speed of 2.0m/min and 3.0m/min respectively.

  • Magnesium alloys have gained increased attention in recent years as the structural materials, because of their attractive properties such as good specific strength, excellent sound damping capability. However, to expand their applications, a reliable joining process is absolutely necessary. In this study, a CW fiber laser was used to investigate the lap weldability of sand casting and wrought magnesium alloys. The effect of defocused distance on lap weldability was examined, and it was found that spatters always generated at the around focused distance because of the high power density of the laser beam. Thus, defocused distance was required to obtain sound welds. In addition, the application of fillet welding was evaluated for minimizing the affect of sand casting magnesium alloy that have relatively poor weldability. As a result of this study, we could confirm good weldability without weld defects.

  • We demonstrate a Pr3+:YLF 639.7-nm laser with single-frequency output based on the Q-switched pre-lase technology, pumped by a fiber-coupled GaN blue laser diode. The pre-lase technology is realized by the step-type loss of the acousto-optical Q-switched device. The conclusions of the theoretical research are verified experimentally. The mode-suppression ratio was 44 dB at the single-frequency laser output. Detection by interferometer verified the realization of the stable single-frequency laser. In addition, the emission spectrum had a linewidth of 139.9 MHz, measured by Fabry-Perot interferometer. The single-frequency laser's single-peak power was over 19.7 W with 98.8-ns pulse duration, obtained under an absorption power of 1.74 W.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental analysis of the high-power laser (HPL)-induced damage to a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor. Although the laser-induced damages to metallic materials have been sufficiently investigated, the damages to electric-optic imaging systems, which are very sensitive to HPLs, have not been studied in detail. In this study, we experimentally analyzed the HPL-induced damages to a CMOS image sensor. A near-infrared continuous-wave (CW) fiber laser was used as the laser source. The influences of the irradiance and irradiation time on the permanent damages to a CMOS image sensor, such as the color error and breakdown, were investigated. The experimental results showed that the color error occurred first, and then the breakdown occurred with an increase in the irradiance and irradiation time. In particular, these damages were more affected by the irradiance than the irradiation time.

  • A distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser and a high speed electroabsorption modulator (EAM) are integrated on the basis of the selective area growth technique. The typical threshold current is 4 to 6 mA, and the side mode suppression ratio is over 40 dB with single mode operation at 1550 nm. The DBR laser exhibits 2.5 to 3.3 mW fiber output power at a laser gain current of 100 mA, and a modulator bias voltage of 0 V. The 3 dB bandwidth is 13 GHz. A 10 Gbps non-return to zero operation with 12 dB extinction ratio is obtained. A four-channel laser array with 100 GHz wavelength spacing was fabricated and its operation at the designed wavelength was confirmed.
