In this paper a fracture criterion is proposed for cracked cylindrical samples of high-strength prestressing steels of different yield strength. The surface crack is assumed to be semi-elliptical, a geometry very adequate to model sharp defects produced by any subcritical mechanism of cracking: mechanical fatigue, stress-corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement or corrosion fatigue. Two fracture criteria with different meanings are considered: a global (energetic) criterion based on the energy release rate G, and a local (stress) criterion based on the stress intensity factor $K_I$. The advantages and disadvantages of both criteria for engineering design are discussed in this paper on the basis of many experimental results of fracture tests on cracked wires of high-strength prestressing steels of different yield strength and with different degrees of strength anisotropy.

Various ZnO nanostructures were synthesized and ZnO nanostructure-based self-assembled transistors were fabricated. Compared to spindle and flower like nanostructure, the ZnO nanorod (NR) structure showed much stronger gate controllability, and greatly enhanced device performance, demonstrating that this structural variation leads to significant differences of the nanostructure network-based device performance. Also, patterned dry transfer-printing technique that can generate monolayer-like percolating networks of ZnO NRs has been developed. The method exploits the contact area difference between NR-NR and NR-substrate, rather than elaborate tailoring of surface chemistry or energetic. The devices prepared by the transferring method exhibited on/off current ratio, and mobility of ${\sim}2.7{\times}10^4$ and ${\sim}1.03\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, respectively. Also, they exhibited showing lower off-current and stronger gate controllability due to defined-channel between electrodes and monolayer-like network channel configuration. With multilayer stacks of nanostructures on stamp, the monolayer-like printing can be repeated many times, possibly on large area substrate, due to self-regulating printing characteristics. The method may enable high-performance macroelectronics with materials that have high aspect ratio.
Oxide-dispersion- strengthened nickel alloys with Hf additions are expected to present high temperature mechanical properties and durable helium resistance based on first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Energetic and charge density evaluations of the helium behaviors were performed in Ni matrix, Y2Hf2O7 oxide and the oxide/matrix interface. With the presence of coherent Y2Hf2O7 in Ni matrix, chances of helium bubbles in Ni can be greatly diminished. The helium atoms shall occupy the interfacial site initially, then diffuse into in the octahedral sites of Y2Hf2O7, and these oxide-captured He atoms prefer to separate individually. Much higher diffusion barrier of He in Y2Hf2O7 than in nickel is related to the strong hybridization between interstitial He-1s and nearest-neighboring O-2p orbitals.
Effervescent tablets generate gas bubbles when chemical reaction occurs between water and tablets. Most of previous studies have been focused on pharmaceutical characteristics of tablets. However, for their applications in disinfectants, cleaners, and pesticides, physical characteristics of bubbles released from the effervescent tablets when they are in water are important. In this study, we experimentally investigated the characteristics of microbubbles generated by an effervescent tablet made of sodium bicarbonate and tartaric acid using PDPA and high-speed camera. Microbubbles were generated using different weights of effervescent tablet as well as in different water temperature. The experimental study shows increase in reaction time, bubble concentration and rise velocity as the weight of effervescent tablet increases from 1 to 20 g. The decrease in average bubble diameter was observed when the temperature of water increased from 25 to 45 ℃. Further, reaction time varies inversely with increase in water temperature, while bubble rise velocity is directly proportional to increase in water temperature. Effervescent table continuously generates the bubble with approximately constant diameter (235 ㎛) in the water. However, bubble concentration and bubble rise velocity decreased over time.
This paper describes current status of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) rotating machinery development in Japan. Recent advances in production technology of HTS materials have continuously stimulated the development of high performance rotating machines. One of the most promising applications for such machines is the ship propulsion, and then some major projects have been underway. Also, energetic challenges for the HTS drive motor, e.g., automobile, have started. Furthermore, low speed and large capacity HTS generators are considered to be exciting candidates for wind turbines. The technology trends of the HTS rotating machines is introduced and discussed in this review paper.
Transparent conducting ZnO films were deposited to apply DSSC Substrate on glass substrates at $500^{\circ}C$ by ionbeam-assisted deposition. Crystallinity, microstructure, surface roughness, chemical composition, electrical and optical properties of the films were investigated as a function of deposition parameters such as ion energy, and substrate temperature. The microstructure of the polycrystalline ZnO films on the glass substrate were closely related to the oxygen ion energy, arrival ratio of oxygen to Zinc Ion bombarded on the growing surface. The main effect of energetic ion bombardment on the growing surface of the film may be divided into two categories; 1) the enhancement of adatom mobility at low energetic ion bombardment and 2) the surface damage by radiation damage at high energetic ion bombardment. The domain structure was obtained in the films deposited at 300 eV. With increasing the ion energy to 600 eV, the domain structure was changed into the grain structure. In case of the low energy ion bombardment of 300 eV, the microstructure of the film was changed from the grain structure to the domain structure with increasing arrival ratio. At the high energy ion bombardment of 600 eV, however, the only grain structure was observed. The electrical properties of the deposited films were significantly related to the change of microstructure. The films with the domain structure had larger carrier concentration and mobility than those with the grain structure, because the grain boundary scattering was reduced in the large size domains compared with the small size grains. The optical transmittance of ZnO films was dependent on a surface roughness. The ZnO films with small surface roughness, represented high transmittance in the visible range because of a decreased light surface scattering. By varying the ion energy and arrival ratio, the resistivity and optical transmittance of the films were varied from $1.1{\times}10^{-4}$ to $2.3{\times}10^{-2}{\Omega}cm$ and from 80 to 87%, respectively. The ZnO film deposited at 300 eV, and substrate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ had the resistivity of $1.1{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ and optical transmittance of 85% in visible range. As a result of experiments, we provides a suggestition that ZnO thin Films can be effectively used as the DSSC substrate Materials.

Two new high-nitrogen energetic compounds $ZTO{\cdot}2H_2O$ and $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$ have been synthesized (where ZTO = 4,4-azo-1,2,4-triazol-5-one and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The crystal structure, elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy are presented. Compound 1 $ZTO{\cdot}2H_2O$ crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with space group Pnna and compound 2 $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$ in the triclinic crystal system with space group P-1. In $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$, there is intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the -NH group of ZTO molecule (as donor) and N atom of phen molecule (as acceptor). Thermal decomposition process is studied by applying the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermo thermogravimetric differential analysis (TG-DTG). The DSC curve shows that there is one exothermic peak in $ZTO{\cdot}2H_2O$ and $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$, respectively. The critical temperature of thermal explosion ($T_b$) for $ZTO{\cdot}2H_2O$ and $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$ is $282.21^{\circ}C$ and $195.94^{\circ}C$, respectively.
The aluminum (Al)/copper oxide (CuO) complex is known as the most promising material for thermite reactions, releasing a high heat and pressure through ignition or thermal heating. To improve the reaction rate and wettability for handling safety, nanosized primary particles are applied on Al/CuO composite for energetic materials in explosives or propellants. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) is adopted for the Al/CuO composites as the functional supporting materials, preventing a phase-separation between solvent and composites, leading to a significantly enhanced reactivity. The characterizations of Al/CuO decorated on GO(Al/CuO/GO) are performed through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping analysis. Moreover, the functional bridging between Al/CuO and GO is suggested by identifying the chemical bonding with GO in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The reactivity of Al/CuO/GO composites is evaluated by comparing the maximum pressure and rate of the pressure increase of Al/CuO and Al/CuO/GO. The composites with a specific concentration of GO (10 wt%) demonstrate a well-dispersed mixture in hexane solution without phase separation.

In this study, a series of ballistic experiments have been performed to investigate the protection mechanism of some inert reactive cassettes against shaped charge jet. Three kinds of material were tested as a core material of the inert cassettes, i.e. one of rubber materials, a high modulus and high strength composite material used for ballistic protection and a mixture of energetic materials. Parameters such as deformation of the cassettes, occurrence time of jet distortion, leading jet length and residual penetration depth were investigated from the experiments and they were compared to each other quantitatively according to the jet incidence angles. The results show that the increment of cassette deformation caused jet distortion to occur early and jet distortion brought decrease of the length of leading jet. Then the decrease of the length of leading jet accompanied the decrease of residual penetration depth.
A full scale hydrodynamic simulation that requires an accurate reproduction of shock-induced detonation was conducted for design of an energetic component system. A detailed hydrodynamic analysis SW was developed to validate the reactive flow model for predicting the shock propagation in a train configuration and to quantify the shock sensitivity of the energetic materials. The pyrotechnic device is composed of four main components, namely a donor unit (HNS+HMX), a bulkhead (STS), an acceptor explosive (RDX), and a propellant (BPN) for gas generation. The pressurized gases generated from the burning propellant were purged into a 10 cc release chamber for study of the inherent oscillatory flow induced by the interferences between shock and rarefaction waves. The pressure fluctuations measured from experiment and calculation were investigated to further validate the peculiar peak at specific characteristic frequency (${\omega}_c=8.3kHz$). In this paper, a step-by-step numerical description of detonation of high explosive components, deflagration of propellant component, and deformation of metal component is given in order to facilitate the proper implementation of the outlined formulation into a shock physics code for a full scale hydrodynamic simulation of the energetic component system.
