  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of staying places by deriving the main staying places of the elderly population in Seoul using public transportation card data. For this reason, we used public transportation card data for 7 days from October 12, 2015 to October 18, 2015. As a result of the analysis, 14 places were extracted as the main staying places. It was divided into 5 groups based on the characteristics of the visiting users and concentration time. Most of the staying places showed that the elderly users who lived near the places visited, but in the case of the group where a large number of elderly users visited had relatively wide range of residential distribution. It was possible to confirm that there was a hierarchy. And the concentration time was displayed differently. Most of the staying places' concentration time was between 10 am and 5 pm. However, in the case of Jegi-dong group and Jamsil group had different concentration time. The results of this research provide necessary suggestions for establishing a public transport policy that considers the main stay spaces of the elderly population in Seoul and the stay characteristics of each stay space.

  • The role of the botanical garden in securing biodiversity, responding to climate change, and sustainable development in modern cities is becoming more important. Private botanical gardens that lead the domestic botanical culture are declining due to complex reasons such as an increase of tourist destinations, lack of policy support, lack of introduction of advanced management strategies, and similar leisure activities to national and public botanical gardens. The Private Botanical Garden not only has a large number of plant species with high conservation value, but also provides various public utilities as a cultural and educational space and government efforts are needed to activate the operation of this amenity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the value of public functions provided by private botanical gardens using the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). In this way, the government aims to provide a basis for policy and institutional support for private botanical gardens. The main results are as follows. First, public utility functions provided by private botanical gardens were recognized as 'preservation' (23.4%), 'recreation and tourism' (17.5%) and 'research' (16.6%) in order of analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Second, 'heritage value' (33.0%) and 'existence value' (32.5%) were recognized as significant among the values provided by private botanical gardens. Third, the willingness to pay (WTP) to preserve the public functions of the private botanical garden was 12,234 won. Based on this, the economic value of all private botanical gardens in the whole country was estimated, resulting in about 233.8 billion won. There is a need to revise laws and regulations related to financial support for the revitalization and quality improvement of private botanical gardens. It is also necessary to establish a cooperative operating system between national, public and private botanical gardens.

  • This study analyzes the influence of the construction of a high-speed railroad on territorial organization in France. After development of a new transportation network, the French territorial organization has been largely modified. Many economic urban areas are modified by their position in the territorial hierarchy according to their condition of connection with the TGV network. At first, spatial convergence is the most important effect of the TGV network construction. Second, the development of a transportation network concentrated in the Paris area has influence as an intensified factor on metropolitan areas and as a weakening factor on middle- and small-sized cities. Thus, this system has risk in increasing territorial imbalance in France. Third, to implant an economic activity zone around new TGV stations, a new town or a new economic center starts to develop. This is going to grow into a second core outside of the old city center so that regional spatial organization is transformed from a mono-polarized(mono-centric) organization to a multi-polarized(polycentric) one. Lastly, the integration of the EU railroad system enhances the concentration of economic activity in European metropolitan areas as each metropolitan area tries to develop more competitive space for its rising position in the global urban hierarchical system.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose a decision support model for selecting a lifting method of large spatial roof construction. First, we deducted influential factors consist of 6 factors and 19 sub-factors through literature reviews and expert's advices. Second, the relative importance of each factor was calculated by Analytic Hierarchy Process. As a result, 'site condition(0.237)' among 6 factors and 'available space of the site(0.118)' among 19 sub-factors were identified as the most important factor for selecting lifting method. In addition, methods and procedures were established for evaluating alternatives of lifting methods for each influential factor. A decision support model was completed by providing the Site Suitability Index(SSI) of each lifting method. Finally, we got advices form experts who were actually in charge of the works for large spatial construction project to validate the model. The model proposed in this study was analyzed to be useful in selecting the lifting method. The findings of this study are expected to support the decision making of on-site managers when they select the lifting method on the beginning of the project.

  • Securing a stable residential location is one of the most important decisions that must be made in the modern society. On this matter, both individuals and their families must decide on where to live after taking into consideration various analyses. Contributing attributes in the selection of our dwelling place are crucial. In this research, influencing variables were derived from the intention to move by focusing on the characteristics of the household and traffic conditions, while implications were suggested through a comparison of urban characteristics. Suwon was selected as the case study. The result of the analysis showed the city of Suwon has longer communal satisfaction, relies on self-sufficiency, and is conscious of parking regulation. Preferences for rental housing, having infants and elementary school kids, high savings, and commuter convenience in Suwon and Gyeonggi-do ranked higher in the hierarchy of the intention to move. Compared to Gyeonggi-do, Suwon was influenced by commuters in the city and parking regulation-related variables. Meanwhile, Gyeonggi-do was affected by the lack of public transportation facilities and traffic congestion. Suwon, on the other hand, has a high share of passenger car ownership, so it seems that the psychological stability of parking space is significant. This research will contribute in the policy-making of Suwon, especially on the subject of migration prediction of citizens and real estate location selection, through analyses of variables related to the intention to move to a new residence.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify determinants for preferred funeral methods depending on socio-economic characteristics. In South Korea, the Act on Funeral Services, Etc. categorizes funeral methods into burial, inurnment, and natural burial. This study empirically analyzes how and what socio-economic characteristics affect choices among these three categories. Data is collected from Social Survey 2017 and funeral facilities in the country. The data to be analyzed is developed in terms of a hierarchy which puts the burial and cremation methods in an upper class and the inurnment and natural burial methods in a lower class. Based on this data, a nested logit model is employed to conduct empirical analysis. The analysis indicates that those characteristics that have a statistically significant influence on preferred methods include gender, age, householder, marriage, satisfaction with life, class awareness, monthly income, housing type, housing tenure type, and living in city area. Each variable's modulus of calculated direct and cross elasticity need to be used to analyze the outcome of a nested logit model. In this study, the modulus of direct and cross elasticity are determined for the significant variables. The calculated direct elasticity is applied to analyze the likelihood of choosing each funeral method when there are changes in the significant variables. When a particular method has been selected, on the other hand, the cross elasticity is utilized to analyze changes to the likelihood of choosing the other methods. One of the most notable results is related to natural burial. In order to meet the demand for natural burial, it is necessary to provide more burial sites and raise awareness of natural burial. This will facilitate the efficient use of national territorial space.

  • This paper is aimed at exploring a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural trianglulation of Black, White, and Korean American race relations connected to a large-scale disturbance in the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The second generation Korean American Steph Cha's Your House Will Pay (2019) focuses on a social portrait of the racially marginalized beings as Korean immigrant merchants and African American native consumers. This family saga explores issues resulting from racial hierarchy, racialized stereotypes, and historical marginalization in the internalized sociometry of race and class inequality. This work grapples with issues involved in a sociocultural web of racial triangulation under the white dominant structure, and ensuing intergroup conflicts of social minorities in the economic geography of urban space. It opens up civil discussions for transracial, transethnic, and transcultural interactions and coexistence. It ultimately leads to extending young people's minds for a deep understanding of the socioecomonic landscape of racial matrix, and enhancing the cultural literacy for a better awareness of social empathy and the communal respect of life.

  • More and more domestic skyscrapers have been rapidly constructed to get enough living space for people living in overcrowded cities. The purpose of skyscrapers is to provide citizens with useful facilities and to establish landmarks and also national and regional symbols. Previous studies have been conducted which focused on the structure, materials, plans, maintenance, and relevant information regarding skyscrapers. Skyscrapers, however, are different from other smaller buildings regarding the residential environment as well as in other ways. Recently, several problems have been raised in that the indiscreetness of current skyscrapers cannot guarantee residents a high quality living environment, and they might contain risks unless criteria are put forward to ensure that the design and facilities provide for this aim. It is judged that a set of performance criteria for the residential environment to ensurethe residents' quality of life could solve this problem. This study therefore aims to suggest a method for the improvement of the residential environment of skyscrapers by establishing residential environment evaluation factors. In conclusion, this study calculates the weight of each evaluation factor using AHP (an analytic hierarchy process) and suggests evaluating criteria. It is expected that this study could be used to propose guidelines for residents at the design and planning stage of building a skyscraper.
