  • Purpose: To examine the effects of appearance satisfaction on school adjustment among adolescents and, further, the mediating effects of self-efficacy between appearance satisfaction and school adjustment. Methods: Conducted a self-report survey of 640 students consisting of sixth, eighth, and tenth graders in the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. The collected data were analyzed through the independent-sample t-test, the One-way ANOVA, the Pearson's correlation analysis, and the hierarchical multiple regression analysis using the SPSS WIN 18.0 statistical program. Results: First, boys and girls showed statistically significant differences. Boys reported higher levels of appearance satisfaction, school adjustment, and self-efficacy than girls. Second, there were no significant differences in appearance satisfaction and self-efficacy according to the school level. However, statistically significant differences were observed in school adjustment between sixth and eighth graders. Third, students who thought they belonged to the upper class in terms of academic performance and family economy showed the highest level of appearance satisfaction, school adjustment, and self-efficacy. Fourth, there were positive correlations between appearance satisfaction, self-efficacy, and school adjustment. Fifth, self-efficacy proved to have mediating effects between appearance satisfaction and school adjustment among adolescents. In particular, it had a full mediating effect on the relation between appearance satisfaction and adjustment to school life, one of the subfactors of school adjustment. Conclusion: The results suggest that appearance satisfaction is a factor which influences adolescents' school adjustment and that self-efficacy is an important means of mediating between appearance satisfaction and school adjustment. The study is significant in that it highlighted the importance of self-efficacy as one of the important variables to consider when planning various educational programs to help adolescents adjust to their school. In the light of the findings, in an effort to enhance adolescents' self-efficacy and help them lead a harmonious school life in Korea's so-called 'lookism' society, it is necessary to develop and implement counseling programs and character education materials that help adolescents develop a positive perception of their appearance and build self-esteem and self-confidence.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope an algorithm which generates trip plans based on rating points of travel app users and travel experts to help potential travellers experience their desired destinations in advance. This algorithm uses the above rating points and the gradually created hierarchy to generate the most preferred and efficient trip courses. Users can go through video clips or panoramic VR videos of the actual destinations from their trip plans generated by the algorithm which may add excitement to their actual trips. With our heuristic methods, the more users input their ratings, the better trip plans can be generated. This algorithm has been tested on android OS and proven efficient in generating trip plans. This research introduces a way to experience travel destinations with panoramic VR video and proposes the algorithm which generates trip plans based on users' ratings. It is expected to be useful for travellers' trip planning and to contribute growth in the travel market.

  • Although service robots in various fields are being commercialized, most of them have problems that depend on explicit commands by users and have difficulty to generate robust reactions of the robot in the unstable condition using insufficient sensor data. To solve these problems, we modeled mirror neuron and theory of mind systems, and applied them to a robot agent to show the usefulness. In order to implement quick and intuitive response of the mirror neuron, the proposed intention-response model utilized behavior selection networks considering external stimuli and a goal, and in order to perform reactions based on the long-term action plan of theory of mind system, we planned behaviors of the sub-goal unit using a hierarchical task network planning, and controled behavior selection network modules. Experiments with various scenarios revealed that appropriate reactions were generated according to external stimuli.

  • The technology transfers from public institutions have positioned themselves as knowledge conduits for stimulating firms' capabilities under 'catching-up' economy paradigm. While this view is still relevant, the policy for public technology needs to be extended to a more marketoriented way. This study explores how public technology affects the financial performance of demanding companies by comparing the revenues and profits of 'technology commercialised group (TC)' and 'in-house research group (InR)'. The estimation results by hierarchy regression suggest that the size and the patents of TC firms have a more influential impact than InR group, although the ratio of maintaining research staff was reported an inverse relation. The contribution to the operating profit seems to be indifferent between the groups. The positive impact of public technology over the firm's performance is highly related to the technology commercialisation capability, signalling that the aim of technology transfer needs to gear toward the enhancement of commercialising capabilities rather than the promotion of technology transactions.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of hospitals that patients safety and quality improvement by accreditation process and to examine the impact or interrelation of leadership, organizational culture, hospital management activities and recognition of hospital management performances. The data were collected through a review of the literature, and selfadministered survey with a structured questionnaires to 714 subjects from several medical staff members, administration staff members, nursing staff members, medical technicians and other staff members working in 23 accredited hospitals in Korea. In this analysis hierarchical multiple regression and structural equation model were used. The conclusion of this study provides a theoretical model for understanding organizational changes brought about by accreditation system. Factor on improvement of efficiency and raise the morale, rather than increase of medical income and reduce of the cost factors, had a stronger influence on the accreditation process. In the future, the hospital's participation to induce the accreditation program voluntarily will come up with an alternative policy concern about financial perspective. Also, the hospitals which preparing accreditation program to achieve the goal efficiently, will make use of transformational leadership through enhancing individual consideration and intellectual development to leading members participation. Additionally, non-accredited hospitals should aim at professional culture by innovative and creative approaches, and inviting members to learning and growth in the organization.

  • An effective method of system modeling and dynamic scheduling for the back-end line of semiconductor manufacturing is proposed. The virtual factory, describing semiconductor manufacturing line, is designed in detail, and then a Petri net model simulator is developed for operation and control of the modular cells of the virtual factory. The petri net model is a colored timed Petri nets (CTPNs). The simulator will be utilized to analyze and evaluate various dynamic status and operatons of manufacturing environments. The dynamic schedulaer has a hierarchical structure with the higher for planning level and the lower for dynamic scheduling level. The genetic algorithm is applied to extract optimal conditions of the scheduling algorithm. The proposed dynamic scheduling is able to realize the semiconductor manufacturing environments for the diversity of products, the variety of orders by many customers, the flexibility of order change by changing market conditions, the complexity of manufacturing processes, and the uncertainty of manufacturing resources. The proposed method of dynamic scheduling is more effective and useful in dealing with such recent pressing requirements including on-time delivery, quick response, and flexibility.

  • Understanding extreme precipitation events is very important for flood planning purposes. Especially, the r-year return level is a common measure of extreme events. In this paper, we present a spatial analysis of precipitation return level using hierarchical Bayesian modeling. For intensity, we model annual maximum daily precipitations and daily precipitation above a high threshold at 62 stations in Korea with generalized extreme value(GEV) and generalized Pareto distribution(GPD), respectively. The spatial dependence among return levels is incorporated to the model through a latent Gaussian process of the GEV and GPD model parameters. We apply the proposed model to precipitation data collected at 62 stations in Korea from 1973 to 2011.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate conceptual constructions which determined financial preparedness for retirement. This study was guided by two theoretical frameworks, planned behavior theory and hierarchical personality model. Based on two theories, the conceptual framework which aimed to explain financial preparedness for retirement were formulated. Data from 'The health and welfare profile of the elderly aged 65 and or older in Chung-choo city' was analyzed. The subjects consisted of 87 economically active elderly population. Structure equation model was employed for statistical analyses. The results of structure equation model revealed that the casual relationship between the level of perceived financial-planning knowledge and the level of financial preparedness for retirement was statistically significant. Also, the hypothesized structural model for financial preparedness for retirement had the good model fit. Implications for social work practice from this study were discussed.
