Low-velocity impact on composite sandwich panel has been investigated. Contact force is computed from a proposed modified Hertzian contact law. The Hertzian contact law is constructed by adjusting numerical value of the exponent and reducing the through-the- thickness elastic constant of honeycomb core. The equivalent transverse elastic constant is calculated from the rule of mixture. Nonlinear equation to calculate the contact force is solved by the Newton-Raphson method and time integration is done by the Newmark-beta method. A finite element program for the low-velocity impact analysis is coded by implementing these techniques and an 18-node assumed strain solid element. Behaviors of composite sandwich panels subjected to low-velocity impact are analyzed for various cases with different geometry and lay-ups. It has been found that the present code with the proposed contact law can predict measured contact forces and contact times for most cases within reasonable error bounds.

he rolling contact behaviors between a smooth ball and a flat rough surface under dynamic load are intricately affected by many factors, such as the diameter of a ball, normal load and the roughness of a flat surface etc. Accordingly, the experimental study is done to find them on the base of elastic hysteresis loss as theoretical approach is very difficult. The experimental apparatus composed of damped-free vibration system is used. This paper investigates the damping characteristics on the rolling contact area through rolling friction force and logarithmic decrement versus displacement obtained in accordance with the variations of those factors, and presents a new experimental method to find out contact width using the relations of logarithmic decrement and rolling friction force with displacement.

We predict the rolled-strip profile for a 6-high mill using thin rolling theory and a numerical model. In the numerical model, we calculate the distributions of the contact pressures between the rolls and the rolling pressure between the strip and the work roll in the transverse direction using the geometric structure of the 6-high mill and the boundary conditions. We determine the distribution of the rolling pressure in the rolling direction via a thin-foil rolling model using Fleck's theory. We calculate the three-dimensional elastic deformation of the work roll using the pressures of the width and rolling directions. We then obtain the three-dimensional strip profile via the elastic deformation of the work roll during the rolling process. The profile is verified by a thin cold-rolling test and FE simulation.

A roller pinion gear (RPG) system composed of either a pin or a roller and its conjugated cam gear can improve the gear endurance from that of a conventional gear system by reducing the sliding contact while increasing the rolling motion. In this paper, we first proposed the exact cam gear profile and the self-intersection condition obtained when the profile shift coefficient is introduced. Then, we investigated the Hertzian contact stresses and the load stress factors while the varying the shape design parameters to predict the gear surface fatigue life, which is strongly related to the gear noise and vibration at the contact patch. The results show that the pitting life can be extended significantly by increasing the profile shift coefficient.

In the analysis of impulsive response of plate, Lagrange's theory, Reissner's theory and Mindlin's theory are generally used. But, in applying these theories the impulsive stresses directly underneath the concentrated impact point cannot be analyzed because the solution fails to converge. In this paper, therefore, an attempt for a supported square plate is made by using three-dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity on the supposition that the uniform distributed load acts on the central part of it. In order to clarify the validity of theoretical analysis, the strain variations are measured experimentally for a square glass plate. Finally it is shown that these theoretical results are in close agreement with the experimental results.

In the present study, crack initiation criteria, static failure and tensile mode fatigue behavior for a rail steel are evaluated to assure the railway vehicle's safety. The transverse fissure, which is the most critical damage in the rail, is initiated by the maximum shear stress and its location is subsurface. In addition, the possibility of transition from the shear mode to the mixed mode increases with increasing the length of subsurface crack. Because of the brittleness by the welding, the fracture toughness of the welded part is lower than of the base metal. For low ${\Delta}K$, the stage II fatigue crack growth rates of the welded part is slower than of the base metal but, for high ${\Delta}K$, this different behavior for fatigue crack growth rate is nearly diminished. These trends are more remarkable for low stress ratio, R=0.1. It is believed that this behavior is caused by the change of the microstructure which that of the welded part is coarser than of base metal.
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was crosslinked in the melt state to enhance wear resistance, Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and triallyl cyanurate (TAC) was used as a crosslinking agent and a promoter, respectively. With increasing amount of DCP and TAC used, gel content of crosslinked UHMWPE (XUMPE) increased, while the melting temperature, crystallizaiton temperature, crystallinity, and tensile properties decreased. The results of pin-on-disk wear test and ball-on-disk test with small applied load showed reduced wear volumes of XUMPE from that of the unmodified UHMWPE. As the wear mechanism effected in the experimental condition of this study was thought to be deformation rather than adhesion or fatigue, a new parameter, the ratio of maximum contact stress to yield stress, was proposed to correlate well with observed wear resistance. In ball-on-disk wear test with larger applied load, XUMPE showed higher wear volumes than that of the unmodified UHMWPE which were accompanied with increased friction coefficients and surface roughness of the wear tracks. When contact stress was well above yield stress, the failure of XUMPE, as well as deformation, was thought to be much accelerated.

In this paper, when the glass plate of fragile material is subjected to impact load, the fracture pattern and the generation phenomenon of cone crack were theoretically clarified by using the analysis method of impulsive stress in the first paper. The numerical analysis results of strain distribution at a distance of 0.1cm, from the impact loading point to 5cm, were compared with experimental results. The main conclusions obtained are as follows; (1) The generation phenomenon of cone crack at the impact fracture of the glass plate can be analytically confirmed by using the three dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity. And the numerical analysis results of strain distribution using this theory are relatively in close agreement with the crack size obtained from the impact fracture experiment. (2) After the stress wave generated at the impact point propagated to the spherical compressive wave, this stress wave reflected from the back surface and reached again at the surface of the plate to the spherical stress wave. Then the generation of cone crack can be confirmed along the stress wave surface. (3) The plate is the thicker, the more is the generation phenomenon of cone crack at the lower impact velocity range (20m/s-35m/s). Because the fracture generate before the maximum tensile stress acting to the glass plate, cone crack was rarely ever generated.
