Effect of Low Dose of Gamma Radiation on the Growth of Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) (저선량 감마선이 땅콩 생장에 미치는 효과)

  • Effect of low dose gamma radiation on the growth of groundnut (Arachis hypognea L.) were investigated with respect to germination rate, seedling development and yield. Seeds of “Palpal” cultivar were irradiated with 0.5~20 Gy of ${\gamma}$ radiation in order to determine the hermetic effect of low dose radiation. The germination rate of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation group was lower than that of the control but the seedling height of groundnut grown from seeds irradiated with low dose ${\gamma}$-ray was slightly higher than that of the control. The number of pod and kernels, and the seed yield increased by 27%, 17% and 19 %, respectively, in the 12.0 Gy irradiation group compared to that in the control group. The 100 seed weight was 87.2 g in the 4.0 Gy irradiation group, which was 11% heavier than 78.3 g in the control group. Low dose radiation showed an enhancement effects on the growth and yield components of groundnut.

  • New technologies for water purification are continuously emerging to address global water quality problems, and one such technology involves advanced hermetic water purification facilities made by concrete that utilize ozone treatment processes. Better knowledge about surface deterioration of epoxy coating exposed to ozone treatment is needed as a foundation for development of improved methods and materials in the future. This study utilized atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation methods, and existing indirect methods such as visual observation, changes in mass, surface observation and chrominance analysis, to evaluate epoxy water-resistance and anti-corrosiveness. This study considered six different epoxy formulations to assess typical degradation characteristics of epoxy surfaces with regard to water-resistance/anti-corrosiveness. AFM and nanoindentation techniques emerged as promising direct methods with potential to provide quantitative measures of surface quality that are improvements upon existing indirect methods. The experiments also confirmed that some of the epoxy-coatings were severely iMPacted by ozone exposure, and thus the results demonstrate that concern about such deterioration is justified.

Performance of Heat Pumps Charged with R170/R290 Mixture (R170/R290 혼합냉매 적용 히트펌프 성능 평가)

  • In this study, performance of R170/R290 mixtures is measured on a heat pump bench tester in an attempt to substitute R22. The bench tester is equipped with a commercial hermetic rotary compressor providing a nominal capacity of 3.5kW. All tests are conducted under the summer cooling and winter heating conditions of $7/45^{\circ}C$ and $-7/41^{\circ}C$ in the evaporator and condenser respectively. During the tests, the composition of R170 is varied from 0 to 10% with an interval of 2%. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) and capacity of R290 are up to 15.4% higher and 7.5% lower than those of R22 for both conditions respectively. For R170/R290 mixture, the COP decreases and the capacity increases with an increase in the amount of R170. The mixture of 4%R170/96%R290 shows the similar capacity and COP as those of R22. For the mixture, the compressor discharge temperature is $16{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ lower than that of R22. There is no problem with mineral oil since the mixture is mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge is reduced up to 58% as compared to R22. Overall, R170/R290 mixture is a good long term 'drop-in' candidate to replace R22 in residential air-conditioners and heat pumps.

Effect of Ti and Si Interlayer Materials on the Joining of SiC Ceramics

  • SiC-based ceramic composites are currently being considered for use in fuel cladding tubes in light-water reactors. The joining of SiC ceramics in a hermetic seal is required for the development of ceramic-based fuel cladding tubes. In this study, SiC monoliths were diffusion bonded using a Ti foil interlayer and additional Si powder. In the joining process, a very low uniaxial pressure of ~0.1 MPa was applied, so the process is applicable for joining thin-walled long tubes. The joining strength depended strongly on the type of SiC material. Reaction-bonded SiC (RB-SiC) showed a higher joining strength than sintered SiC because the diffusion reaction of Si was promoted in the former. The joining strength of sintered SiC was increased by the addition of Si at the Ti interlayer to play the role of the free Si in RB-SiC. The maximum joint strength obtained under torsional stress was ~100 MPa. The joint interface consisted of $TiSi_2$, $Ti_3SiC_2$, and SiC phases formed by a diffusion reaction of Ti and Si.

  • Radiation at very low doses frequently has a stimulating or hermetic effect on growth of organism. Effects of growth and survival rate on various dose of gamma irradiation in the farm culture of juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) were determined in Hallim (Jeju) from February 2004 to January 2005. The initial shell length of abalone juveniles in this study was average $3.45{\pm}0.4cm$. A change of growth after irradiation $(0{\sim}20Gy)$ was observed for 48 weeks. The highest growth rate was observed in 4 Gy-irradiated group and the lowest growth rate was observed in 20 Gy-irradiated group. The additional research about biochemical changes on juvenile abalone after irradiation should be accomplished. Continuous study for gamma radiation-induced hormesis on growth and metabolism of juvenile abalone will further induce the creation of value in ocean industry.

Radioresistance of Acorus calamus to Gamma Ray Irradiation

  • Acorus calamus is an indigenous hydrophyte used as phytoremediation and water purification as well as medicinal herb. Irradiation of gamma ray was performed to investigate the effect on radioresistance of A. calamus on in vitro. Various doses (20-500 Gy) of gamma rays were irradiated to in vitro plantlets. The effect of irradiation was studied on survival rate, shoot formation and growth rate. The survival and multiplication rate was remarkably decreased with the increase of radiation dose. The growth of plantlets was significantly increased in comparison to the control at low doses. The hermetic effect of radiation was appeared in A. calamus. It was significantly decreased or interrupted above 250 Gy. The mean 50% lethal dose ($LD_{50}$) was extremely high as 240 Gy. We conclude that A. calamus had remarkably high radioresistance compared with other plant species.

Performance of R290 and R1270 as Alternative Refrigerants of R22 According to Temperature Variations of Evaporator and Condenser (증발기와 응축기 온도변화에 따른 R22 대체냉매 R290 및 R1270의 성능평가)

They were tested in a refrigerating bench tester with a hermetic rotary compressor. The test bench provided about 3.5 kW capacity and water and water/glycol mixture were employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. All tests were conducted under the same external conditions resulting in the average saturation temperatures of $7/45^{\circ}C$ and $-7/41^{\circ}C$ and $-21/28^{\circ}C$ in the evaporator and condenser, respectively. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these refrigerants is up to 11.54% higher than that of R22 in all temperature conditions. Compressor discharge temperatures were reduced by $14{\sim}31^{\circ}C$ with these fluids. There was no problem with mineral oil since the mixtures were mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge was reduced up to 58% as compared to R22. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for residential air-conditioning and heat pumping application.

  • Stored rice grain undergoes physical and chemical deteriorations over time. As temperature and moisture content are important factors affecting to the denaturation of rice, it is important to store rice at a low temperature and hermetic condition. From a microscopic point of view, many studies have already reported how proteins and lipids were denatured within rice grain. Meanwhile, the weight loss of rice is currently observed at actual storage sites and can occur for diverse reasons. In this study, it was assumed that the decomposition process of polysaccharides, known as the main component of rice, plays an important role in its weight loss. In specific, the roles of enzymes were also evaluated. Our interest is in the major polysaccharides within a rice grain such as starch as well as within a rice endosperm cell wall. It is suspected that the weight loss of rice grains during storage seems to associate with the degradation of amylose and amylopectin. Nevertheless, it should be also speculated the correlating effect of other components such as proteins and lipids.

A Study on the Life-time Prediction for the Rubber O-ring applied to decoy through the Accelerated Life Test (기만기 적용 고무 O-ring의 온도에 따른 가속수명시험을 통한 수명예측에 관한 연구)

  • A decoy is a weapon system that can protect vessels from an enemy's torpedo. Thus, the decoy should be able to operate in the field without any failure. Because the decoy can be inoperable once its sealing is broken and water permeates inside the system, the hermetic sealing capability considering the operational environment is mandatory. To be hermetically sealed, a rubber-type O-ring is generally used in a decoy system. The sealed performance of rubber-type products, however, tends to age and deteriorate with time. Therefore, the O-ring needs to be maintained or changed periodically. This paper proposes a method to estimate the proper maintenance period using the hardness and elongation percentage, which represents the performance of the O-ring product and test data from Accelerated Life Test (ALT) of the product. The O-ring used in this paper is a NBR type, and the temperature was chosen to be the main accelerating factor as referenced in many studies. The criteria for the failure of the O-ring was set for the product to be 50% degraded compared to the initial performance. In addition, the Korean standard KS M 6518 was adopted and referenced for the preparation of test samples and the calculation of estimates. The O-ring's predicted life was simulated by analyzing the test results from a computer program, and the optimized maintenance period for the product was determined.
