This experiment was conducted to Investigate the herbicidal activity of naturally developed d-Limonene on the control of Sicyos angulatus L. which is destructive to biodiversity and ecosystem under greenhouse and open field condition. Among the tested concentrations, most efficacy of early foliar application(leaf stage with 1.5 and 3) of d-Limonene was found in $70mg\;mL^{-1}$, followed by $35mg\;mL^{-1}$, $17.5mg\;mL^{-1}$ in that order under greenhouse condition. The higher the d-Limonene concentration, the better the effect in greenhouse condition. In leaf stage with 2, 3 and 5 under open field condition, the higher the d-Limonene concentrations, the higher the weeding effect. The remarkable effect was, particularly, found in d-Limonene with $70mg\;mL^{-1}$ while little was found in the plants with d-Limonene with $35mg\;mL^{-1}$. In the case of 15 leaf stage of S. angulatus L. treated with d-Limonene under outside treatment effect was low. The treatment effect of d-Limonene under open field compared with greenhouse condition was more significant. It can be recommended that d-Limonene with $70mg\;mL^{-1}$ could control S. angulatus L. by 5 leaf stage.
To establish the method of integrated weed management in rice nurserybed, phytotoxic factors of herbicide and antidote efficacy were evaluated at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1982 and 1984. Seven hundred eighty four research items were carried out as weed control research since 1961. While 65% of these were belonged to rice research, only 6% was attributed to nurserybed among rice research. More herbicidal phytotoxicity exhibited when seedbed was pressed just after seeding than sand covered or uncovered seedbed and also this phytotoxic symptom enhanced by using intact seed compared to pregerminated seed. Rinsing practice of seedbed reduced the phytotoxic effect of butachlor and this effect was more pronounced with the number of rinsing operation increase and at the pressed plot. However, herbicidal efficacy was not significantly decreased by rinsing operation. Growth of rice seedling hardly affected where the herbicide was absorbed through root only compared to absorption from both of root and shoot for pyrazolate, butachlor and thiobencarb. Herbicide antidote `CGA 123'407' completely protected from the phytotoxic effect of pretilachlor without arising any adversal effect in weed control. However, without antidote, pretilachlor showed the most severe phytotoxic symptom among used herbicides.
Several rice herbicides were evaluated to determine the herbicidal efficacy on dry seeded paddy rice. The time of herbicide application was within 1 day after seeding(DAS), 18 DAS, and 40 DAS. Under the upland conditions 30 DAS(before permanent flooding) dominant weed species were Echinochloa sp., Digitaria sp., Leptochla sp., weedy rice and other several annual broadleaved weeds belonging to Cruciferae, but after flooding Echinochloa sp., Aeschynomene sp., Eleocharis kuroguwai, Cyperus sorotinus, Ludwigia prostrata, Aneilema japonica were dominat. Early application (1 DAS) of thiobencarb, pyrazolate/butachlor, or chlomethoxyfen/butachlor resulted in very good herbicidal efficacy only during the first 30 days, but not thereafter. Application of propanil+butachlor on 18 DAS did not control the late occurring weeds effectively. Application of bentazone/quinchlorac on 40 DAS successfully suppressed weed growth throughout the remaining rice growing season and showed similar grain yield as hand weeded plot. Weed growth reduced the plant height, panicle number, 1000-grain weight, percent ripened grains, and grain yield of rice by 7, 82, 19, 55 and 87% respectively. There was a positive linear relationship between weed weight and lodging index of rice.
This study was conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of flucetosulfuron+pyrazosulfuron-ethyl against Eleocharis kuroguwai and Scirpus planiculmis and to investigate tank-mix of flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl with bentazone and 2,4-D to control sulfonylurea resistant Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. In controlling E. kuroguwai, flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl showed 75% control, lower than that (95%) of bentazone + MCPA, at 29 DAA (days after application), while at 60 DAA it showed 90%, greater than that of (78%) of bentazone + MCPA, with greater control than penoxsulam at all times. In case of Scirpus planiculmis control, flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl showed lower activity than bentazone + MCPA but greater than penoxsulam. Flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl showed consistently high activities against Echinochloa crus-galli and E. kuroguwai regardless of soil flooding condition, while penoxsulam and bentazone + cyhalofop showed significantly lower activity in 5 cm flooding condition than 0 cm flooding condition. Flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl did not control sulfonylurea resistant Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides, while its tank-mix with bentazone or 2,4-D at 2/3 or 1/2-folds of their recommended rates, respectively, provided > 90% control.
Research situation and recent research activities of the RDA of Korea were reviewed and summarized for rice nurserybed. Sixty five percent of total 784 weed research items were carried out as rice research while only 6 percent was belonged to nurserybed within rice research. The floristic composition based on the degree of dominance significantly affected by herbicide properties, type of nurserybed and seeding itself. Herbicidal phytotoxicity of currently used several herbicides was greatly dependent upon the covering, absorption, germination, and irrigation regimes. The new safening agent "CGA 123 407" (4,6-dichloro-2-phenyl-pyrimidine) permited the safe application of pretilachlor (2-chloro-2',6-diethyl-N-(2-propoxyethyl) acetanilide) as a pre-emergence herbicide without reducing herbicidal efficacy. Several new herbicides, pyrazolate (4-(2,4-dichlorobenzoyl)-1,3-dimethylpyrazol-5-yl-p-toluenesulphonate), SL-49 (1,3-dimethyl-4-(2,4-dichlorobenzoyl)-5-phenacyloxy-pyrazole) MY-93 (S(1-methyl-1-phenethyl)-piperidine-1-carbathioate) and DPX-84 ((methyl 2- ((4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl) amino-carbonyl) aminosulfonylmethyl)) benzolate)) performed satisfactorily in terms of safety and herbicidal efficacy for both surface covered and surface pressed nurserybed after herbicide application and thus expected very significant contributions not only for all kind of nurserybeds but also for direct seeding.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of recycled paper mulch on weed occurrence and the growth and yield of rice in dry-seeded paddy field. Mulch papers with basis weight of 105, 110, 115g/$m^2$ were fabricated from recycled corrugate container. It took about 80 days after mulching for the mulch papers to reach 50% decomposition, showing no significant differences among types of mulch paper. Paper mulching was very effective in controlling the paddy weeds at early stage of rice growth, but the efficacy of weeds control decreased a little at late season. However the efficacy was still higher than the plot using herbicide. The paper mulch plot showed rice yield similar to the weed control plot using herbicide. It could be concluded that paper mulch can be used as an alternative for non-herbicidal weed control and ensure as high yield as the conventional weed control method using herbicide in dry-seeded rice field.
Field and greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate application variables including spray volume, surfactant, and simulated rain affecting phytotoxicity of glyphosate for enhancing efficacy of postemergence herbicides. Glyphosate phytotoxicity was increased by addition of surfactants, L-77 and Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution in Artmesia princeps and Equisetum arvense and addition of Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution enhanced control of Trifoliurn repens. Simulated rain within 4 or 8 hours after glyphosate application reduced glyphosate phytotoxicity. However, addition of L-77 and Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution increased glyphosate phytotoxicity reduced by simulated rain in Artmesia princeps and Trifolium repens.

The experiment was conducted to investigate the herbicidal efficacy of imazosulfuron mefenacet by using remote-controlled aerial application (RCAA) to control annual and perennial weeds in rice paddy field. Eight annual weed species including Echinochloa crus-galli L. and three perennial weeds were dominated in the experimental field. Application of imazosulfuron mefenacet using RCAA was highly effective to control both annual and perennial weed species. No phytotoxic effect was observed in the rice based on the plant height and the number of tillers. Finally, rice yield in the imazosulfuron mefenacet treatment was as much as that in the hand weeding. This study indicates that imazosulfuron mefenacet using RCAA can be applied to control both annual and perennial weed species in rice paddy field.
Tefuryltrione is a new hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor, which has been recently registered for the use for paddy rice, Korea. Dose-response studies were conducted to compare rice safety and weed control efficacy of tefuryltrione against Eleocharis kuroguwai. When rice and E. kuroguwai were applied at a range of doses of tefuryltrione, $GR_{90}$ values (the dose required to inhibit weed growth by 90%) of E. kuroguwai were $82.38-93.39g\;a.i.\;ha^{-1}$ in two independent experiments. The $GR_{10}$ values (the dose required to inhibit rice growth by 10%) of tefuryltrione for rice were $297.77-471.54g\;a.i.\;ha^{-1}$. As a result, the selectivity indices ($GR_{10}$ for $rice/GR_{90}$ for E. kuroguwai) of tefuryltrione were 3.19-5.72. Therefore, these results demonstrate that tefuryltrione has a relatively high selectivity between rice and E. kuroguwai with a high herbicidal activity against E. kuroguwai and a good rice safety.
Cyhalofop/bentazon ME and pyribenzoxim EC herbicides were originally developed as foliarapplied herbicides to control weeds at 4-5 leaf stages of barnyard grass 20-25 days after seeding (DAS) in direct-seeding culture but further possible utilization of these two herbicides earlier than 3-4 leaf stages of rice were evaluated for a field where early weed infestations might be severe. The application of cyhalofop/bentazon ME and pyribenzoxim EC at right after rice emergence and the 2-3 leaf stages of rice had an excellent weed control efficacy with above 90% up to 30 DAS without a phytotoxicity of rice plant and the control efficacy of over 80% was maintained until 60 DAS. However, these two herbicides controlled Echinochloa crus-galli very effectively above 97% but Aneilema keisak and Aeschynomene indica were not controlled by cyhalofop/bentazon ME and Cyperus serotinus by pyribenzoxim EC. Therefore, to control those problem weeds, second systematic application of pyribenzoxim EC and pyrazosulfuron/mefenacet G for A. keisak and A. indica, and pyrazosulfuron/molinate G, cyhalofap/ azimsulfuron/molinate G, pyrazosulfuron/mefenacet G and bentazon SL for C. serotinus at 30 DAS was found to be very efficient herbicide systems.
