Ultraviolet is the one of the main environmental factors promoting aging process via increased intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decreased expression of endogenous antioxidant enzymes and molecules. Therefore, in this study, we tried to search for natural skin-protective antioxidant materials from marine origins (Porphyra Thalli, Laminariae japonicae thallus, Ostreae Concha, Sargassum Thallus, Undaria thallus, Haliotidis Concha, Codium thalli, Syngnathoides biaculeatus, Hippocampus, Stichopus Stichopus, Thalli, Hizikia fusiforme thalli) which exhibit free radical scavenging activity and protect against UVB-induced cytotoxicity and oxidative cell death. Free radical scavenging activity was shown in order of Undaria thallus. Sargassum Thallus, Laminariae japonicae thallus, Hippocampus, Haliotidis Concha, Ostreae Concha, Syngnathoides biacuJeatus. In another experiment, UVB-induced cytotoxicity and cell death were effectively suppressed by treatment of Sargassum Thallus, Haliotidis Concha, Codium thalli, or Hippocampus water extract. Furthermore, UVB-induced cell death was mediated by intracellular accumulation or ROS, which was significantly inhibited by treatment with aforementioned extracts. The protective effect of these marine natural products seemed to be mediated by increased expression of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, and heme oxygenase-1. These results suggest that Sargassum Thallus, Haliotidis Concha, Codium thalli, and Hippocampus may have preventive and protective potentials as new functional cosmetics against oxidative stress-mediated skin damages and aging with antioxidant properties.
Objectives: The aim of this experimental study is to investigate effects of Dolichoris Semen, Terminaliae Fructus and Bojanggunbi-tangon the anti-cathartic action of mice and guinea pigs to develop effective herbal medicine and prescription to cure diarrhea early and to prevent side effect of chronic diarrhea. Methods: To compare effects of Dolichoris Semen, Terminaliae Fructus and Bojanggunbi-tangon the anti-cathartic action of mice and guinea pigs, we evaluated the actions on isolated gastrointestinal smooth muscles. on the transportability of small and large intestines, onthe neostigmine-induced transportability of small intestine and on diarrhea induced by castor oil, pilocarpine, barium chloride. Results: (1) Dolichoris Semen, Terminaliae Fructus and Bojanggunbi-tang showed the strong alleviation on the contraction of mice's isolated gastrointestinal smooth muscles induced by acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride. while Terminaliae Fructus, strong, Bojanggunbi-tang, intermediate and Dolichoris Semenshowed the minor alleviation on the contraction of guinea pigs' isolated gastrointestinal smooth muscles induced by acetylcholine chloride and histamine. All effects depended on the density in each medicine. (2) The tranbportability of small intestine was contrained in the groups controlled by 600 mg/kg of Dolichoris Semen, Terminaliae Fructus and Bojanggunbi-tang, and 200 mg/kg of D olichoris Semen and Terminaliae Fructus. However, the enhancement of neostigmine-induced transportability of small intestine was constrained only in the groups controlled by 600 mg/kg of Dolichoris Semen, Terminaliae Fructus and Boianggunbi-tang. (3) The transportability of large intestine was constrained by Dolichoris Semen and Bojanggunbi-tang. They showed substantial results. which depended on the amount of each medicine. (4) Terminaliae Fructus showed substantial anti-cathartic effects on diarrhea induced by caster oil in both groups controlled by 200 and 600 mg/kg of it. However, Bojanggunbi-tangshowed the effects only in the group controlled by 600 mg/kg. in diarrhea induced by pilocarpine, the groups controlled by 600 mg/kg or Terminaliae Fructus and 200 and 600 mg/kg of Boianggnbi-tangshowed substantial results. In diarrhea induced by barium chloride. the groups controlled by 200 and 600 mg/kg of Terminaliae Fructus and 600 mg/kg of Boianggunbi-tangshowed substantial results in anti-cathartic effects. Conclusions: These results show that Terminaliae Fructus is more effective on the contraction of mice and guinea pigs' isolated gastrointestinal smooth muscles, Dolichoris Semen is more effective on the transportability of small intestine, Dolichoris Semen and Bojanggunbi-tang are more effective on the transportability of large intestine. Terminaliae Fructus and Bojanggunbi-tang show substantial results in anti-cathartic actions.
Objectives The goal of this review was to investigate clinical, experimental and literature studies of Korean medicine on atopic dermatitis (AD) of Korean children in Korean medicine literature, seeking for the better research methods for more effective treatments. Methods Electronic investigations were practiced on AKOP (The Association of Korean Oriental Pediatrics, http://www.akop.or.kr) to collect theses which were published by J Pediatr Korean Med. The key word 'Atopy' was used for searching to ensure that every related thesis was collected. The publication date was limited from 1996 to 2016. The selected literatures were assessed mainly according to distributions of study type, publication year, scale, treatment and its efficacy. Results 55 papers were selected from 59 studies. In these collected 55 related theses, there were 29 experimental studies (52.73%), 18 clinical studies (32.73%), 8 review studies (14.55%). In the 29 experimental studies, there were 20 studies (68.97%) using NC/Nga mouse as subjects. The mite antigen was used to trigger AD by 8 studies (27.59%). The studies have been utilizing DNCB and DNFB instead of mite antigen since 2011. All the experimental studies showed that the Korean medicine was effective in AD. In total 18 clinical studies, 3 studies (16.67%) were case reports, only 1 thesis (5.56%) was conducted by case control study and the rest were case series studies. 7 studies (38.89%) of 18 studies diagnosed AD according to Hanifin and Rajka's diagnostic criteria (1980), only 1 study (5.56%) according to the Korean standard and the rest 10 studies (55.56%) didn't mention diagnostic criteria. 12 clinical studies (66.67%) showed efficacy in treating AD. There were 10 studies (55.56%) only employing internal treatments and 1 thesis (5.56%) didn't mention the exact prescription. Naesowhajungtang-kamibang, Saenghyeoryunbue-um were used 3 times (16.67%) as the internal medicine respectively. 5 theses (27.78%) were combined with acupuncture therapy. Hegu (LI4), Sanyinjiao (SP6) were used in 4 theses, and Taichong (LR3), Quchi (LI11), Zusanli (ST36) in 3 theses. The number of acupoints chosen from The Spleen meridian of Foot-Taiyin was the largest. There were 8 review theses. 2 were about the foreign oriental medicine, 3 were about the external medicine or external treatment methods, and 3 other studies were about severity scoring systems, the methodological study in the latest clinical study, overview for pattern and results of herbal medicine-derived AD clinical researches. Conclusions The experimental studies and clinical studies showed the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatments. However, this study still needs improving by conducting more comparative studies and using better research methods, in order to find more effective treatments to improve clinical efficacy.

Gamisoamsan is a prescription originated in Soamsan which is known as an anti-cancer remedy in the traditional Korean Medicine. To enhance the synergic effects of anti-cancer activity of Soamsan, this study reconstituted the original components of Soamsan with a slight modification and produced a novel herbal remedy, namely Gamisoamsan. To investigate the effects of Gamisoamsan on anti-cancer reaction, I studied the effects of Gamisoamsan on angiogenesis via chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay, corneal neovascularization assay and the effects on expression of growth factor which are VEGF, TGF-β, bFGF and IMUP-1. Anti-cancer effects of Gamisoamsan was also abserved through hematological parameters, tumor volume and survival rate in mice. Gamisoamsan inhibited embryonic angiogenesis of blood vessels in CAM assay and inhibited neovascularization of ral cornea. Gamisoamsan reduced cell proliferation in HT1080 cells and IC50 was 2.18 ㎎/㎖ Gamisoamsan reduced the expression of VEGF, TGF-β, bFGF and IMUP-1 which was known as vascular growth factor and this effects of Gamisoamsan was predominant than VP-16. The treatment of Gamisoamsan decreased the CT-26 cell inoculated-tumor volume in mice colon adenocarcinoma and increased mice survival which was inoculated CT-26 cells. The results of the present study suggest that Gamisoamsan extracts has a potential anti-tumor activity and may be an useful remedy to prevent and/or treat cancer.
Precipitation was formed during the preparation of decoction from a mixure of Scutellariae Radix and Coptidis Rhizoma or Phellodendri Cortex according to the prescription of Hwang-ryean-hae-dog-tang. Baicalin and berberine, the active ingredients of the two herbal medicine were identified in coprecipitated product. Pills were prepared using the coprecipitated product and various binders. The dissolution rate of baicalin and berberine from pills was increased in at pH1.2 when acacia or tragacanth was used. The absorption rate of baicalin from the coprecipitated product was faster than that from Scutellaria extract, but the absorption of berberine from CPP was slower in stomach, duodenum and jejunum of rats compared with Coptis extract. The time required for the maximum serum concentration (Cmax) of baicalin and berberine from CPP in mice were 150 and 200 min after oral administration, respectively. The maximum serum concentration of baicalin from CPP in mice was higher than Scutellaria extract, but the concentration of berberine was lower compared with Coptis extract. The minimum inhibitory concentration of CPP was below $50\;{\mu}g/ml$ against gram positive bacteria, and was higher than that against gram negative bacteria. The antibacterial activity of CPP was lower than that of herberine, but was more potent than Scutellaria extract. It was found that the inhibition rates of growth by CPP against S. epidermidis, K. pneumoniae, B. cereus and S.aureus were 60.0, 51.1, 45.4 and 39.9%, respectively.

■ Background Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction(HFpEF) is a heart failure that appears to have normal contraction function. In the case of HFpEF, no pharmacological therapy has been found to improve clinical prognosis, so it should be approached as an symptomatic treatment, therefore alternatives are needed due to concerns over adverse effects such as electrolyte imbalance caused by medication. ■ Case report A 81 year old female patient with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction(HFpEF) patient complained dyspnea. Herbal prescription Mokbanggi-tang and Oryeongsan was administered on 6th day and 8th day respectively since the symptoms started. The NYHA Classification and Chest X-ray had been evaluated during the treatment period. Until the 7th day, the patient was classified as Class II, and when discharged from the hospital on the 28th day, it gradually improved and was classified as Class II. Chest X-Ray took on 2nd day showed pleural effusion and it was aggravated until 13th day. Follow up Chest X-Ray showed improving state of pleural effusion from 20th day and gradually got better. Mokbanggi-tang treatment continued for 52 days and stopped on 58th day. After Mokbanggi-tang treatment ended, only Oryeongsan treatment was maintained. ■ Conclusion The present case report suggests that Korean-Western medicine approach with Mokbangki-tang and Oryeongsan might be effective to pleural effusion and heart failure symptoms such as poor physical activity shown in a NYHA Classification. This shows that Mokbanggi-tang and Oryeongsan can be a therapeutic option as a treatment for patient with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction(HFpEF).
Objectives : Sopung-tang(Shufeng-tang) is a famous herbal prescription that treated ischemic brain injury. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of Sopung-tang(Shufeng-tang) on congnition and motor function recovery after ischemic brain injury in rats. In neurological motor behavior tests, motor function recovery was significantly increased in the experimental groups as compared with control groups(p<0.05). Especially Ex II was significantly increased as compared with Ex I(p<0.05). 2. In Morris water maze test, congnitive motor function recovery was significantly increased in the experimental groups as compared with control group(p<0.05). Especially Ex II was significantly increased as compared with Ex I(p<0.05). 3. In the immunohistochemical staining for the expression of BDNF in hippocampus, more immune reaction was investigated in the experimental groups as compared with control groups. Especially most immune reaction was experimented in the EX II. Conclusions : According to the above results, Sopung-tang(Shufeng-tang) can treat on the congnition and motor function recovery after ischemic brain injury in rats. And it is effective method in expression of BDNF in hippocampus.
Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) is a native Korean herbal medical food and a native millet, and Koreans have eaten it as a substitute for rice since ancient times. Foods using foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) have been recorded not only in cookbooks but also in Korean traditional medical books several times. Therefore, the purposes of this study was to investigate Food-Therapy (食治) using foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) recorded in the literature from 1300 to 1600 from early to mid-Joseon (朝鮮) and provide data required to develop menus for Yaksun (藥膳, herbal food). This study examined Food-Therapy using foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) in 10 types of literatures from the 1300s to the 1600s. and is described in the literature a total of 63 times. According to classification by cooking method, porridge (粥) was most frequently mentioned in the literature at 27 times. The cooking method of Soup (湯) is described 11 times. Cooking methods such as porridge juice and soup are frequently used since those methods are digestive and absorptive. Other food ingredients described using foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) are white leek (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) ginger (Zingiber officinale), chicken egg, Allium chinense, sparrow (Passer montanus), rooster liver, Du-si, crucian carp (Carassius auratus L), and white broiler. Other medicinal herbs described with Setaria italica are Panax ginseng (人蔘), Poria cocos (茯笭), Angelica acutiloba (當歸), Ziziphus jujuba (大棗), Liriopeplatyphylla (麥門冬), and cinnamon (肉桂). Food-Therapy using Setaria italica L. Beauv was described as a prescription for stomach and spleen (脾胃), stomach reflux (反胃), defecation and urinary disorder (大小便難), cholera, deficiency syndrome (虛症), and tonification (補益). This focus on promoting health and preventing diseases by strengthening the stomach and spleen and improving defecation and urination using Food-Therapy when herbal medicine was rare.
Purpose: Recently, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been increasingly used in children. Studies have shown that 34% of adults and 11% of children use CAM in the USA and Canada. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and patterns of CAM use in elementary children in Korea. Methods:From July to August 2007, parents of elementary children completed a questionnaire survey at Gwang-ju. In all, 794 questionnaires were analyzed. Results:Of the 794 respondents, 278 answered that their pupils (35%) had experienced CAM. The following types of CAM therapy were used: herbal medicine, 62.5% dietary supplements, 31.2% vitamins, 30.2% and acupuncture, 11.1%. CAM therapies were used for the following diseases: nutritional deficiency, 33.3% atopic dermatitis, 31.3% arthralgia, 31.3% allergic rhinitis, 28.8% obesity, 26.3% and asthma. The following were the motives to use CAM: prevention of diseases (33.5%), dissatisfaction with modern medicine (21.2%), and complementary therapy to modern medicine (20.5%). People gained information about CAM through neighbors (65%) and mass media (21%). Moreover, 83 parents (30%) were satisfied with CAM because of its effectiveness. Conclusion:Many parents have advocated the use of CAM in their children. However, most of them used CAM without any prescription or adequate knowledge. Further studies are required to determine the efficacy of CAM.
Objectives : To satisfy the demand of good treatment of constipation Methods : we investigated the literatures of Oriental Medicine about Constipation. Results: 1. There are three categories of etimological factors of constipation, that is, endogenous, exogenous and non-exo-endogenous factor. The endogenous factor is caused by seven emotions, called depression of Ki and stagnation of Ki. The exogenous factor is six excessive atmospheric influences, for example, wind, cold, dampness, heat and dryness. And the non-exo-endogenous factors are overfatigue, improper diet, stagnated blood and deficiency of Ki and blood that comes from old age, long disease and after delivery. 2. Classification: According to cause of disease it is classified by constipation due to cold, heat, wind, dryness, retention of undigested and phlegm. According to Internal Organs there are constipation due to deficiency syndrome of the stomach, excess syndrome of the stomach, deficiency syndrome of kidney and splenic constipation. And Differentiation of syndromes according to Ki and blood, there are constipation of deficiency type and excess type. There are constipation due to stagnation and deficiency of Ki, deficiency of blood and stagnated blood. 3. Principles and Methods of treatment 1) Herbal Medicine (1) Excess type [1] Constipation due to heat : Seunggitang(承氣湯) and Majainwhan(麻子仁丸) [2] Constipation due to stagnation of Ki : Samatang(四磨湯) and Yukmatang(六磨湯) (2) Deficiency type [1] Constipation due to deficiency of Ki : Whanggitang(黃?湯) [2] Constipation due to deficiency of blood: Yunjangwhan(潤腸丸) [3] Constipation due to cold : Jechunjun(濟川煎) and Banyuwhan(半硫丸) 2) Enema therapy: It is a method to induce defecation by honey or pig's bile juice for weak people. 3) Acupuncture and Moxibustion: Acupoints used to treat constipation are BL25, ST25 and TE6. Moxibustion at CV8, CV6 is good for constipation due to cold. (4) Diet therapy: It is very important that we eat meals regularly and defecate on the same time even if you don't. And we have to eat food like fruits, vegetables and beans. (5) finger pressure: Finger pressing around these points like ST25, SP25, BL25, BL31, BL32, BL33 and BL34 is good for it. (6) Kigong therapy: Abdominal breathing (7) Old man' s constipation: Hip bath or diet therapy is commended. Laxation with lubricant like Supungyunjangwhan(搜風潤腸丸) is used. (8) Women' s constipation: After delivery, we have to administer tonifying prescription Sipjundaebotang(十全大補湯) and enema can be used. Conclusion : We have to examine the cause of disease and bowl movement carefully. After comprehensive analysis of the data gained by the four methods of diagnosis, we diagnose and treat patients on the base of overall of symptoms and signs.
