Objective : Angelica species are some of the most medicinally important materials in Oriental medicine. This study was performed to determine if Angelica species could be identified by genetic analysis and to verify Pyrosequencing analyses, which were used to assess genetic variation. Methods : The DNAs of Angelica acutiloba, Angelica gigas and Angelica sinensis were extracted. We have investigated the typing of single-base variations of Angelica species in DNA by using Pyrosequencing. Results : Angelica gigas showed a different pattern compared with Angelica acutiloba and Angelica sinensis. The peak of Angelica gigas was very weak in the second C nucleotide base compared with that of the others. The peak of Angelica acutiloba was present in the fourth C nucleotide base compared with that of the others. From these results we verified that our Angelica species-specific sequencing primer was well designed. Conclusion : Pyrosequencing analysis might be able to provide the identification of the Angelica species.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to identify the research trends and to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Korean medicine treatment by analyzing the recently published clinical studies of Korean medicine treatment on nocturnal enuresis in children. Methods The literatures were searched from OASIS, KISS, NDSL, RISS, Cochrane, CINAHL, Embase, Pubmed, and only clinical studies published from 2000 to October 2019 were included. The publication year, study type, type of enuresis, demographic information of participants, duration of illness, intervention type and details, follow-up period, outcome measurements and adverse events of selected literatures were analyzed. Results A total of 38 studies were selected. In the selected studies, acupuncture was the most frequently used treatment for nocturnal enuresis, followed by herbal medicine, electrical stimulation treatment, moxibustion, acupressure and plaster therapy. The most commonly used acupoints for acupuncture were SP6 and CV4, and the most used herbal medicine was Chukcheonwhan, while Alpiniae Fructus (益智仁) and Dioscoreae Rhizoma (山藥) were the most used herbal materials. Most of the studies showed that the total effective rate of Korean medicine treatment was high. All the adverse events occurred in the Korean medicine treatment group were caused by acupuncture or puncture. Conclusions This study analyzed clinical studies of Korean medicine treatment on nocturnal enuresis in children, identified the research trends and evaluated the effectiveness and safety of the Korean medicine treatment.
Introduction Jaundice is one of the most common conditions found in neonatal period. Phototherapy is one of the main treatments for neonatal jaundice. However, several adverse effects of the phototherapy have been reported, including DNA damage recently. Therefore, a variety of treatments have been conducted to shorten the duration of phototherapy. Meanwhile, it has been hardly tried to prevent neonatal jaundice, but diverse approaches have been tried in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for many years. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the studies for the treatments to prevent neonatal jaundice based on TCM. Materials and Methods Various literatures have been searched via CNKI, and PubMed using the terms "neonatal jaundice" (新生儿黄疸, 胎黃, 胎疸) in category of 'Traditional Chinese Medicine', 'Traditional Chinese Medicinal Herbs' and 'Combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine With Western Medicine'. The search range included randomized controlled trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials (CCTs), case reports, reviews and animal experiments published from 2013 to 2015. Results A total of 104 studies were found. 93 articles were excluded by reviewing the titles and abstracts. Out of the remaining 11 studies, 9 articles were RCTs, 2 articles were CCTs. The treatment used in neonatal babies in the studies were, using herbal remedies (meditation 5, bath 3 and retention enema 1) and the acupressure. All treatments were initiated within the first 24-48 hours after their birth. Then, there was a study that the subjects taken the herbal medicine were women during pregnancy. The outcome assessments used were the serum total bilirubin (TB), transcutaneous bilirubin measurement (TCB), the incidence of the hyperbilirubinemia, the duration time of the jaundice. Especially, TB, TCB and the incidence of the hyperbilirubinemia have decreased significantly more than that of the control group in the most of the results. No severe adverse events were reported in all articles reviewed. Conclusions Conventional treatment such as, herbal medicine in TCM, seems to be the effective way to prevent neonatal jaundice or hyperbilirubinemia. Therefore, the conventional treatment may be favorable choice for preventive treatment for neonatal jaundice.
Traditional Asian medicine has an extensive evidence base built upon thousands of years of experience within Asia, of curing various diseases. Only recently, within the past two centuries, have modern medical scientists developed interest in traditional Asian medicine. Asian Medicine seems to be regarded only as an adjunctive medicine and viewed as alargely un-proven alternative medicine to complement western medicine, used in some cases to establish a new paradigm of "integrative medicine". This article reviews how Korean herbal cosmetics emerged by applying traditional Asian medicine to the science of cosmetics. The characteristics of Korean herbal cosmetics are examined through examples of history, concepts and traditions. With the advancements in biotechnology, studies are now being conducted on the dermatological effects and processing methods of herbal ingredients, including ginseng. The authors explain the current research on the identification on the active ingredients of herbs, extraction methods, and bio-processing of ingredients to improve the biological efficacies of herbs on the skin. A summary of studies focused on modern reinterpretations of ageing theories, such as 'Seven year aging cycle', are provided. In conclusion, the development of Korean cosmetics products are based on the accumulated knowledge of thousands of years of experience including; 1) practical heritage of traditional Asian medicines such as Donguibogam; 2) excellent medicinal plants, such as ginseng, which are native to Korea; and 3) innovative attempts to modernize materials, processes, and principles.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 14 Chung-bu medicinal materials described in the Dongui Bogam on inflammatory cytokine production in HaCaT human keratinocyte cells. In order to confirm this possibility, we screened inhibition activity of 17 cytokines using Bio-Plex ProTM Human Cytokine 17-plex assay in HaCaT cell lines. Of the 14 Chung-bu medicinal materials, Holotrichia (Ho) and Scorpio (Sc) exerted inhibitory effects on interleukin (IL)-5 production; Ho, Mantidis Ootheca (MO), and Hirudo (Hi) exerted inhibitory effects on IL-6 production; Ho, MO, Lumbricus (Lu), Hi, and Meretricis Concha (MC) showed significant inhibitory effects on IL-8 production; Gecko (Ge), Bombycis Faeces (BF), Cicadidae Periostracum (CP), and MC showed significant inhibitory effects on IL-13 production; and Testudinis Chinemis Plastrum et Carapax (TCPC), BF, and Lu exerted significant inhibitory effects on MIP-1β production. Results indicated that the Chung-bu medicinal materials might be a good candicate as potential anti-inflammatory agents for inhibition of skin inflammation. However, further investigations on these materials, including mechanistic studies, should be carried out to validated the effects in human skin equivalent models of dermatitis.
