After examining and analysing the medicinal herbs of fifty-three experimental papers, we studied their effects on immediate tumors in specific cancers. We did not study the influence on the life span of general cancerous cells. We looked to see if the combined usage of medicinal herbs and anticancer agents inhibited the tumor cell's growth. The serum test and blood cell count test showed if the medicinal herbs inhibited the side effects of the anticancer agent. The test showed that more than 80 percent of used medicinal herbs, brought anticancer activities. However, anticancer experimental studies using medicinal herbs have draw-backs. First, it is difficult to choose a prescription using the standards of Oriental Medicine because we are testing a mouse not a man. Second, because we only observed the indirect effect on the whole physiological regulation caused by the synergic effects of the complex prescription, we are not able to understand the detailed mechanism of the herbs. Therefore; if the anticancer effect of the herbs is proved by the experiment, we need to research the concrete medical action of medicinal herbs and the immunological analysis of herbal medicines on the body.

The purpose of this study is to research and report the effect of Bee Venom pharmacopuncture therapy at facet joint for the two patients who was diagnosed as herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD) of lumbar spine. Two patients were hospitalized and treated with Complex Korean Medical treatment such as acupuncture, herbal medicine and Essential bee venom (EBV) pharmacopuncture in Dongsuwon hospital of oriental medicine. We measured their pain and function of daily life by numerical rating scale (NRS), straight leg rasing test (SLRT), Roland-morris disability questionnaire (RMDQ). As the result, we found the improvement of gait disturbance, functional disorder, and pain. This study suggested that Bee Venom pharmacopuncture therapy at facet joint is considered to conservative treatment for HIVD of lumbar spine. But further clinical studies are needed to clarify the effect of Bee Venom pharmacopuncture therapy at facet joint for the two patients with HIVD of lumbar spine.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effect of Korean medical treatment on a spinal cord tumor. Methods : We treated a patient who was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor. We used acupuncture, bee venom pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion and physical therapy; the patient was evaluated using the visual analogue scale(VAS) and given an International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury(ISNCSCI) score. Results : VAS decreased and ISNCSCI score increased meaningfully. Conclusions : According to these results, this report possibly suggests that Korean medical treatment could be a helpful choice for treating a spinal cord tumor.

A diabetic neuropathy patient was treated with Korean medicine for 2 weeks. In this case report, we report the efficacy of a complex treatment comprising various Korean medicine methods by evaluating the differences in pain scores. The patient reported improvement in both pain score and glucose index. Korean medicine could therefore be effective for the treatment and prevention of diabetic neuropathy.

An obese patient was treated with Korean medicine for a short-term period of seven days while under admission care. In this case report, we report the efficacy of a complex treatment comprising various Korean medicine methods by evaluating the differences in obesity-linked factors. The patient lost weight loss and showed decreases in fat mass and various indexes of obesity. Korean medicine could therefore represent a prompt and effective treatment for obese patients.

A examination of the kinetic properties of UDP-glucose : (1,3)-$\beta$-glucan (callose) synthase from mung bean seedings (Sorbus cortex) shows that these enzymes have a complex interaction with UDP-glucose and various effectors. Deoxynojirimycin increased the inhibitory effect of (1,3)-$\beta$-glucan synthase at the concentration-dependent manner by fluorescence assay. The inhibitory effect of Fr. 2-16 (97.15%) showed higher than that of deoxynojirimycin (80.63%). Fr. 2-3 inhibited the growth of the Candida albicans at 1 mm inhibition zone by disk diffusion method. These results suggest that Sorbus cortex extract can be used as a stable antifungal material.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a possibility of the Korean medical treatment in patient with peroneal nerve palsy, and to suggest importance of differential diagnosis of foot drop. Peroneal nerve pasly was diagnosed by lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and electromyogram(EMG). The patient was treated with acupuncture, herbal medicine, bee-venom acupuncture and moxibustion from March 7th to May 2nd. We measured Numerical Rating Scale(NRS), Range of Motion(ROM) of the ankle, and observed the change in body temperature using Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(DITI). After received Korean medical treatment, the patient showed improvement in all the scales mentioned above. The result showed that Korean medical treatment is effective in peroneal nerve palsy before operation.

Silymarin is a flavonoid complex extracted from the Silybum marianum plant with a wide range of pharmacological and biochemical effects. In the present study, the immunomodulatory effects of silymarin were investigated in BALB/c mice. Silymarin was administered daily by intraperitoneal injection at doses of 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg for 14 consecutive days. Following the exposure, host hematological parameters, spleen cellularity and histopathological examination, as well as delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses, hemagglutination titers (HA), splenocyte cytokine production and lymphocyte proliferation assay were studied in all of the test groups of animals. The results showed that the low dose of silymarin (50 mg/kg) could stimulate both cellular and humoral immune functions in the treated hosts. In addition, silymarin at 100 mg/kg appeared to impact on DTH responses and lymphoproliferation. Based on the finding here, it would seem that silymarin has efficient immunostimulant properties. As a recommendation, the application of silymarin along with acupuncture technique (herbal acupuncture) can be thought as a good plan to modulate and enhance the immune system for the management of several immunodeficiency disorders. However, further studies are required to demonstrate this hypothesis.

An efficient analytical method was devised for the accurate L-muscone assay in aqueous samples. It involves solid-phase extraction of L-muscone in adsorption mode using XAD-4 as the sorbent and dichloromethane modified with 10% (v/v) methanol as the eluting solvent. The gas chromatographic analysis of the eluate residue dissolved in toluene on a DB-5MS capillary column provided complete resolution of L-muscone from the co-extracted interferences. The overall method showed excellent linearity ($r^2{\geq}$ 0.9994) in the range of 0.1 to 2.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL with good intra- and inter-day precisions (% RSD = 2.5～7.3) and with high extraction recovery rates ($\geq$ 98.1 %). When the present method was applied to a L-muscone herbal drink product, the within-batch RE (%) in the labeled concentration (1.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) for the three randomly chosen bottles were -2.4, -1.3 and -3.3 with high precision (% RSD $\leq$ 3.1). The present method is considered to be suitable for quality control evaluation on liquid drinks and other complex formulations fortified with L-muscone.

We investigated the effect of nutritional and environmental factors on Ophiocordyceps longissima mycelial growth. The longest colony diameter was observed on Schizophyllum (mushroom) genetics complete medium plus yeast extract, Schizophyllum (mushroom) genetics minimal medium, and Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA); however, malt-extract yeast-extract agar, SDA plus yeast extract, yeast-extract malt-extract peptone dextrose agar, SDA, oatmeal agar, and potato dextrose agar showed higher mycelia density. A temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ was optimum and 7.0 was the optimum pH for mycelial growth. Colony diameter was similar under light and dark conditions. Maltose and yeast extract showed the highest mycelial growth among carbon and nitrogen sources respectively. The effect of mineral salts was less obvious; however, $K_3PO_4$ showed slightly better growth than that of the other mineral salts tested. Among all nutrition sources tested, complex organic nitrogen sources such as yeast extract, peptone, and tryptone were best for mycelial growth of O. longissima. Ophiocordyceps longissima composite medium, formulated by adding maltose (2% w/v), yeast extract (1% w/v), and $K_3PO_4$ (0.05% w/v) resulted in slightly longer colony diameter. In vitro mycelial O. longissima growth was sustainable and the production of fruiting bodies could be used for commercial purposes in the future.
