Botanical Composition, Herbage Production and Plant Mineral Contents as Affected by Application of Chemical Fertilizer and Fermented Sawdust Pig Manure on Cheju Brown Volcanic Ash Pasture Soil

  • This experiment was carried out during the period from September, 1997 to October, 1998 to determine the effect of fermented saw-dust pig manure (FSP) application on the herbage production on a mixed pasture in the Cheju brown volcanic ash soil. Split plot design (main plot: 3 nitrogen application levels of 0, 150 and 300 kgiha; sub plot: 4 pig sawdust manure levels of 0, 3, 6 and 12 tonha) was used. Plant height and dry matter yield increased significantly with an increase of nitrogen and FSP level. There was no difference in the botanical composition of grasses as affected by FSP application level, but herbage yields of grass species were increased by nitrogen application compared to that without nitrogen application. Botanical composition of white clover decreased with an increase of nitrogen application, but increased with an increase of FSP application level. Percentages of weeds were not affected by application rates of chemical nitrogen fertilizer and swine manure in the mixed species pasture. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents of species in the pasture significantly increased with increasing application rates of nitrogen fertilizer. In conclusion, it would be an optimum to apply 150 kgha of inorganic chemical fertilizer and plus either 3 or 6 toniha of fermented swine manure with sawdust for optimum production of mixed pasture on Cheju Island. 목초생산성과 초지 생태계에 미치는 액상분뇨의 시용효과 (The Effect of Cattle Slurry on the Forage Yield and Grassland Ecosystem)

  • Many farmers apply cattle slurry on grassland, often in excess of crop N requirements, resulting in groundwater contamination. Our research objective was the development of grassland management systems that reduce undesirable sideeffects on other compartment of the ecosystem. Field experiment was conducted during 1991~1993 on sandy loam soil at AllgZiu south western Germany. Different sets of conditions were tested such as : zero fertilization, reduced sluny application$(l20kg N ha^{-1}yr^{-1})$, intensive sluny application(conventional sluny application, $240kg N ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$). The plots of the reduced slurry application had no significant effect on dry matter yields, digestible dry matter and net energy of herbage. Dry matter yield of zero fertilization was significantly lower than that of usual slurry application, however the content of Ca and Mg in herbage tended to increase. We conclude that reduced sluny application can be applied on grassland without adverse effects on dry matter production and quality of herbage.

관목지 목초본류의 사료가치에 관한 평가 (Estimate Feed Value of Herbage from Shrubby Area)

  • 젖소등 초식 가축의 사료 자원개발을 위하여 국내 산지에 다량으로 자생되고 있는 관목류 및 초류중 비교적 가축 사료로써 활용 가치가 있어 보이는 수종의 관목초류를 택하여 시기별로 사료성분을 분석하고 젖소에 대한 일부 급여 시험을 실시하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 관목초류의 건물 함량은 평균 25~45%의 범위를 나타내고 있으며 이중 청미례와 댕댕이덩쿨이 각각 26.25%와 26.36%로 가장 낮았고 졸참나무가 47.19%로 가장 높게 나타났다. 2. 조단백질 함량은 건물량 기준으로 대부분 10% 이상으로 나타났고 이중 칙과 자귀나무가 평균 20% 정도로 가장 높게 나타났으며 억새와 새는 평균 10% 미만으로 낮게 나타났다. 3. 조섬유 함량은 평균 20~30% 뱅위로 타나났으며 개암나무와 청미례가 20% 정도로 가장 낮았고 억새와 새는 37% 이상으로 높게 나타났다. 4. 대부분 관옥 사초류는 시기가 경과함에 따라 조단백질 함량이 줄어 들고, 조섬유 함량이 증가되는 경향을 보였으며, 또한 건물량이 증가되였다. 5. 관목초본류를 볏짚 대용으로 1일 두당 5kg을 급여한 결과 체중과 유량 및 무지고형분 함량이 약간 증가되는 경향을 보였다.

혼파유형이 목초의 수량과 품질에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Mixture Type on the Herbage Yield and Quality)

  • 휴경지에서의 집약적인 단기간(3∼6년) 초지이용체계에 적합한 혼파유형을 제시하고자 orchardgrass (OG) 단파, orchardgrass(OG) + red clover(RC) 단순혼파 및 orchardgrass + tall fescue + Kentucky bluegrass + ladino clover에 의한 다초종 혼파(cormplex mixtures, C. Mix) 등의 처리를 두어 이들 혼파유형이 목초의 수량과 품질에 미치는 영향에 대하여 3년간(1989∼'91) 시험하였다. 3년간의 ha당 평균 건물수량은 OG구(10,709kg)나 C. Mix구(11,371kg)에 비하여 OG+RC구(11,849kg)가 높았다(P<0.05). 조단백질함량은 처리간에 차이가 없었으나 3년간 평균 가소화 유기물함량은 OG구보다 OG+RC구가 높았다(P<0.05). ha당 조단백질수량은 OG구(1,816kg)나 C. Mix구(2,053kg)에 비하여 OG+RCf(2.231kg)가 높았고(P<0.01), 가소화 유기물수량도 OG구(6,116kg)나 C. Mix구(6,817kg)에 비하여 OG+RC구(7,147kg)가 높았다(P<0.05). 한편 체중 kg당 건물섭취량은 처리간에 차이가 없었으나 두당 유기물 섭취량은 OG구(377g)보다 OG+RC구(388g)와 C. Mix구(392g)에서 높았다(P<0.01). 이상의 결과를 검토할 때 OG+RC 단순혼파가 단기간의 집약적인 초지이용에 가장 적합하다고 사료된다.

Bale Location Effects on Nutritive Value and Fermentation Characteristics of Annual Ryegrass Bale Stored in In-line Wrapping Silage

  • In southeastern regions of the US, herbage systems are primarily based on grazing or hay feeding with low nutritive value warm-season perennial grasses. Nutritious herbage such as annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) may be more suitable for preserving as baleage for winter feeding even with more intensive production inputs. Emerging in-line wrapped baleage storage systems featuring rapid wrapping and low polyethylene film requirements need to be tested for consistency of storing nutritive value of a range of annual ryegrass herbage. A ryegrass storage trial was conducted with 24-h wilted 'Marshall' annual ryegrass harvested at booting, heading and anthesis stages using three replicated in-line wrapped tubes containing ten round bales per tube. After a six-month storage period, nutritive value changes and fermentation end products differed significantly by harvest stage but not by bale location. Although wilted annual ryegrass exhibited a restricted fermentation across harvest stages characterized by high pH and low fermentation end product concentrations, butyric acid concentrations were less than 1 g/kg dry matter, and lactic acid was the major organic acid in the bales. Mold coverage and bale aroma did not differ substantially with harvest stage or bale location. Booting and heading stage-harvested ryegrass baleage were superior in nutritive value to anthesis stage-harvested herbage. Based on the investigated nutritive value and fermentation characteristics, individual bale location within in-line tubes did not significantly affect preservation quality of ryegrass round bale silages.

The Intake and Palatability of Four Different Types of Napier Grass (Pennisetum purpureum) Silage Fed to Sheep

  • Four different types of silage from new cultivars of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), cv. NG 1 and NG 2, were fed to eight wethers in order to evaluate their preference and intake by sheep. The silages were prepared from direct-cut NG 1 herbage; pre-wilted NG 1 herbage; NG 1 herbage with maize meal (5% inclusion) and NG 2 herbage with maize meal (5% inclusion). All silages were palatable to sheep. Maize-treated silage had high quality fermentation, characterized by high Fleig scores and low pH, volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammoniacal nitrogen contents. The pH, Fleig score, in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOMD) and ammoniacal-N contents for maize-treated cv. NG 1 silage were 3.7, 78, $540g\;kg^{-1}$ dry matter (DM ) and $0.18g\;kg^{-1}$ DM whereas, in maize-treated cv. NG 2 they were 3.6, 59, $^458g\;kg{-1}$ DM and $0.18g\;kg^-1$ DM, respectively. The superior quality of maize-treated silages made them more preferable to sheep. Among the maize-fortified silages, palatability and intake were significantly (p<0.001) greater with cv. NG 1. Although direct-cut silage had better fermentation quality compared to wilted silage, wilted silage was significantly (p<0.001) more preferable to sheep. However, there were no significant differences (p<0.05) in the levels of preference and intake of wilted silage compared to maize-treated cv. NG 2 silage, even though the latter tended to be more palatable. There were indications that high pH (4.6 vs 3.5) and IVDOMD content (476 vs $457g\;kg^{-1}%$ DM) of wilted silage contributed to higher intake, compared to direct-cut silage. It was generally concluded that pre-wilting and treatment of Napier grass with maize meal at ensiling enhances intake and palatability.

  • Changes in dry matter yield, crude components, nutrients uptake($P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, MgO) and sulphur containing amino acid(cysteine, methionine) of orchardgrass(Dacty1is glomerata. L) and alfalfa(A4edicago sativa. L) by gypsum application(as sulphur source, 0, 2. 5, 10, 20kg SIlOa) were investigated to understand the effect of sulphur on herbage production in pasture, which was established in 1987 as means of hand broadcasting. The effect of gypsum on dry matter yield at different cutting times during growing seasons has not been found both in orchardgrass and in alfalfa, but in respect to annual total dry matter yield there were increment in herbage yield (P<0.05) of alfalfa at 5, 10, 20kg SIlOa in 1989 and the amounts of sulphur taken up in herbage slightly increased according to the rates of gypsum application. Maximum apparent recovery of sulphur was 7.55% at 2kg SIlOa in orchardgrass and was 17.8% at 5kg S/lOa in alfalfa. There were no any great differences in the content of crude components of both species and this trend was similar with the mineral contents of orchardgrass. But in alfalfa, the amounts of $K_2O$, CaO, and $P_2O_5$ taken up were increased by gypsum application and the increment in the amounts of minerals taken up in herbage at 20kg SIlOa were 14.9 of $K_2O$, 9.1 of CaO, and 2.5kgIlOa of $P_2O_5$ as compared to those of at untreated plot. Cysteine and methionine were not influenced by gypsum applicaton not only in orchardgrass but also cysteine in alfalfa, however, the content of methionine in alfalfa was slightly increased at 2, 5, lOkg SIlOa and at 20kg SIlOa was reverse.

산지초지 개량에 관한 연구 II. 임지의 선점식생이 겉뿌린 목초의 정착 및 수량에 미치는 영향 (Studies on the Improvement of Moutainous Pasture II. Effect of existing vegetation on establishment and herbage production of oversown grasses in forest)

  • Lycopodium serratum이 우점된 곳에서는 심한 영향을 받았다. 선점식생(先占植生)에 따른 겉뿌림 초종(草種)의 반응은 시일(時日)이 경과함에 따라 Orchardgrass, Perennial ryegrass 및 Ladino clover와 같은 $2{\sim}3$개의 초종(草種)으로 식생(植生)이 단순화(單純化)되는 경향이었고 Orchardgrass가 우점종(優占種)이었다. 식생변화(植生變化)는 예취회수(刈取回數)에 따라 선점식생(先占植生)은 현저히 감소되었고 반면에 목초식생(牧草植生)은 급격히 증가경향을 보였다. 이상의 결과로 보아 겉뿌림 임간초지조성시(林間草地造成時) 선점식생(先占植生)인 Miscanthus sinensis와 Festuca ovina가 우정된 곳의 초지(草地) 개량(改良)은 용이한 편이나, Lycopodium serratum 우점지는 지표처리(地表處理)없이 개량이 어렵다고 보며 개량방법(改良方法)도 낮은 잠재생산성(潛在生産性)에 적합(適合)해야 될 것으로 본다.

Temporal and spatial variability in the nutritive value of pasture vegetation and supplement feedstuffs for domestic ruminants in Western Kenya

  • Objective: The study aimed at quantifying seasonal and spatial variations in availability and nutritive value of herbaceous vegetation on native pastures and supplement feedstuffs for domestic ruminants in Western Kenya. Methods: Samples of herbaceous pasture vegetation (n = 75) and local supplement feedstuffs (n = 46) for cattle, sheep, and goats were collected in 20 villages of three geographic zones (Highlands, Mid-slopes, Lowlands) in Lower Nyando, Western Kenya, over four seasons of one year. Concentrations of dry matter (DM), crude ash (CA), ether extract (EE), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), gross energy (GE), and minerals were determined. Apparent total tract organic matter digestibility (dOM) was estimated from in vitro gas production and proximate nutrient concentrations or chemical composition alone using published prediction equations. Results: Nutrient, energy, and mineral concentrations were 52 to 168 g CA, 367 to 741 g NDF, 32 to 140 g CP, 6 to 45 g EE, 14.5 to 18.8 MJ GE, 7.0 to 54.2 g potassium, 0.01 to 0.47 g sodium, 136 to 1825 mg iron, and 0.07 to 0.52 mg selenium/kg DM. The dOM was 416 to 650 g/kg organic matter but differed depending on the estimation method. Nutritive value of pasture herbage was superior to most supplement feedstuffs, but its value strongly declined in the driest season. Biomass yields and concentrations of CP and potassium in pasture herbage were highest in the Highlands amongst the three zones. Conclusion: Availability and nutritive value of pasture herbage and supplement feedstuffs greatly vary between seasons and geographical zones, suggesting need for season- and region-specific feeding strategies. Local supplement feedstuffs partly compensate for nutritional deficiencies. However, equations to accurately predict dOM and improved knowledge on nutritional characteristics of tropical ruminant feedstuffs are needed to enhance livestock production in this and similar environments.

Effects of Seeding Rates and Phosphorus Levels on the Productivity of Atylosia scarabeoides (Benth.)

  • Glasshouse investigations were carried out to investigate the development and yield of Atylosia scarabeoides on soils of the northern guinea savanah zone of Nigeria. Seeds were sown at four rates 50, 75, 100 and 125 kg/ha. Single superphosphate (SSP) fertilizer was applied at sowing at four rates 0, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha. Seeding (plant) population at one month and at harvest was significantly (p < 0.01) influenced by seeding rate but not fertilizer level. Fresh herbage yield was strongly (p < 0.01) dependent on fertilizer level, with the highest (not significant) dry matter yield at 90 kg SSP/ha. Seeding rate had no significant effects on herbage yield. The crude protein content of herbage rose with increase in fertilizer level although there were no significant differences between the various seeding and phosphorus rates. No significant interactions were observed between seeding rate and phosphorus lever. The yields were generally high, indicating good prospects for pasture development with A. scarabeoides in the zone, although field trials would be of benefit.
